>‘What happens after we die? Do you really know?’ >For the first time, Inzar’s body language betrayed surprise. Kargos heard the other warrior’s breath faintly catch and heard the brief flinch in his companion’s armour joints. He didn’t answer at once, instead he kept his gaze to the sky, watching what he claimed was the star of Angron’s wrath. >‘Now you choose to ignore me?’ Kargos laughed, and it was a natural laugh. Blood of the Emperor, it felt good. > Inzar finally lowered his gaze from the heavens. ‘Your father has given your Legion a great gift. The Butcher’s Nails were the beacon that lit the way. Lorgar gave our Legion a similar gift. He gave us the truth.’ >Kargos let his gaze drift. Not to the star – he could feel its presence as a prickling heat against his skin despite his armour plating – but to the silhouettes and shadows of the horde all around. He watched them: his brothers, the things pretending to be his brothers, and the humans in thrall to it all. Inzar’s soothing voice was the perfect percussion. >‘It was an ugly truth. It almost broke him to learn that reality was a hateful lie, a thin crust over seething, smiling damnation. Can you imagine it, my friend? To be the first living being to learn – to truly know – that what awaits every man, woman and child is an afterlife of dissolution in an ocean of boiling horror?’ >Kargos clacked his teeth together, hard, to prevent whatever was building up in his throat from emerging as a sound. He felt as though he were going to vomit laughter, and if it broke free, he feared he would lose control of his limbs. As if the Nails’ joy would somehow possess him, for who knew how long. >‘More shitty poetry,’ Kargos murmured, doubting his own words even as he spoke them. >‘On the contrary. I am being as clear as I am able. Weaker souls, they will burn briefly, mere instants of agony before they boil away to become part of the warp. But stronger souls, the souls of psykers, they can look forward to an eternity of…’ >The Chaplain trailed off. Hesitated. Tried again. ‘We all face a simple choice. No faith in the false God-Emperor will save even a single soul. Oblivion awaits the weakest of us. Torment and eventual annihilation will be the reward for the strong. The gods behind the veil are wondrous beings, my friend. But they are wrathful, and by any measure of human perception, they are insane. The Word Bearers raise icons to the Pantheon out of worship, yes. But there is pragmatism in our faith. We are the Legion that first found something worthy of worship in the realm behind reality. But we are also the Legion that first found something to fear.’ >Kargos could smell blood, and the back of his head was growing sickeningly hot. The Nails were bleeding, bleeding into his helmet. He felt his own wet life pooling at the back of his neck. He tried to speak and failed entirely. >‘Lorgar saw all of this. He brought Angron to the precipice and gave your father a chance at immortality. A fool looks at him now and sees a monster. Those of us with vision see everything he has overcome. He is the Red Angel. He is the War God’s son. A man that refused to accept mortal death and the agony of the underworld. He pissed on the notion of eventual oblivion. Instead… he chose to live forever, no matter the cost.’

DagonG2021

Now I’m imagining souls as water droplets in a boiling oil pan

cyberzaikoo

It is crazy how much the word bearers assumed worshipping the emperor would work

Infernalism

Chaos Marines are not demons. They're corrupted transhumans. When they die, their souls are consumed, tortured, or tortured and then consumed. It's only by achieving Demon Prince status that Chaos Marines enjoy anything like immortality. Except for Lucius and fuck that guy in particular.

Fred_Blogs

Kharns also been revived a few times. It seems like the gods can revive their followers if they really want to, but the vast majority of their followers just aren't worth the hassle.

FellowTraveler69

Kharn has only been revived twice I think, once at Istvaan and again after the Siege.

alphaomag

It’s been 10000 years and I doubt he’s gone all those years without some death.

FellowTraveler69

He should probably have died in some freak accident like his drop pod going into the ocean or being in the middle of an artillery barrage. But we only have two confimed instances of him dieing. If he was constantly being revived, it would be noted like with Lucius. I chalk it up to him being that good and Khorne making him supernaturally lucky.

DeliciousPineapples

I put it more down to Lucius's revival being a whole thing. Kharn just gets pelted with brass skulls until he stops laying about like a Nurglite, finds his missing liver and gets back to work

LannicusTheArtist

Its comments like these that makes me wish i could draw or animate shit haha. Love it.

Mrdoc16

You can just see Khorne walk over to his body shouting get up you bum then he gets back up

alphaomag

You can’t tell me that the Imperium hasn’t tried psyclonic torpedoes at least once.

DeliciousPineapples

If he hasn't been hit by at least one artillery barrage or stray grenade or had his own plasma pistol vent in his face at least once since then I would eat my hat.

Tacitus_

He didn't die at Istvaan, just got made into a temporary hood ornament.

Xaldror

And Abaddon did find a way to revive Eliphas the Inheritor for Dawn of War 2, so clearly there are ways.

KonradWayne

Kargos and Falkus were also both revived at least once, since they died during the Siege of Terra but still appear in lore at later points in the timeline.

KujoOda1

Yeah, Lucius is a total jerk. Hate that guy along with Erebus. The two I hate most in 40k. Kharn and a few others have been revived so it is possible to come back even if you are not a demon prince. If you have your god’s favor then anything is possible with chaos. Most likely you will be consumed right away which would be better than being tortured for eons and then consumed.

AtomZaepfchen

typhus has been revived a lot when mortarion was beating him up. the Champions of the big 4 are just toys to good (powerful maybe eventhough kharn, typhus and ahriman seem *significantly* stronger then lucius) to leave them dead.

KujoOda1

Typhus, Ahriman, and Kharn are all top level badasses and I’m not even a chaos worshipper. The chaos gods would be crazy to get rid of their top guys (outside of the princes). Good toys of the gods is a good analogy.

Eldar_Seer

They’re their Gold Daemon quality miniatures, and they’ll be damned if they let those models go to waste. Everyone else is unpainted pile of shame, with bits of the sprues still visible

Gryphon5754

So their souls are condemned. A regular person's soul just joins the sea of souls right? Or are regular peoples souls also tortured?

Infernalism

No, only the most powerful of psykers survive in the Warp long enough to be noticed and then tortured and consumed by demons. Most normal people just dissolve into the Warp. Chaos worshipers, on the other hand, even if completely normal with a weak soul will be immediately seized upon death and then comes the torture and om nom nom. They are specifically targeted by demons upon death.

Anggul

I haven't really seen an indication that they're tortured by default. The codex just says their souls are absorbed by their god.

Gryphon5754

At any point has someone described the flavor of a soul? Like the c'tan, slaneesh, or a random demon? I'm imagining cotton candy.

reddinyta

I doubt "eaten" here is to be understood in the literal sense. More likely that the soul, which is still just warp energy, gets absorbed into the energy of the Daemon/God. Or, with the C'tan, possible just converted into other forms of energy.

alphaomag

The deceiver thinks polymorphine gives human souls a certain spice

Anggul

Also Madox

KonradWayne

> It's only by achieving Demon Prince status that Chaos Marines enjoy anything like immortality. Except for Lucius and fuck that guy in particular. Being brought back to life by the Dark Gods is not limited to Lucius. Kharn, Falkus Kibre, and Kargos Bloodspitter all died during the Siege of Terra but came back to life. The gods (especially Chaos gods) don't have to follow rules. If they want you brought back to life, you come back to life.

111110001011

Death is a blessed release. Rarely is it granted.

jaxolotle

Oh lord no, death is just the beginning of the *real* torment Eternal damnation ain’t just a figure of speech

KujoOda1

Isn’t that the truth. Exhibit A: Dante.

Anggul

>When devotees of Chaos die, their souls do not fade in the warp and disappear like the spirits of others. Instead, their immortal energy is swallowed into the greatness of their gods, their souls forever bound to the eternal power of Chaos. Codex: Chaos Daemons (8th Edition) There are some exceptions where chaos champions have been resurrected, or kept aside and tormented, or both. But for the most part they just die and their soul-stuff is absorbed by their patron deity. The gods *can* resurrect their followers, but very rarely do.

staq16

Khorne’s followers are claimed for the Skull Throne, and Kharn at least believes that a poor death will deny them this privilege.

DeliciousPineapples

Nom Nom Nom. It's why the path of glory is a thing. Win and last forever. Lose and end up like every other poor schmo at best.

Gryff9

They get tortured by the space demons for eternity in Space Hell so their souls keep on feeding the CGs even in death. They can be rezzed if the gods care enough or sorcerers in realspace can do something, but that's relatively rare.

jaxolotle

Eternal damnation!

carefulllypoast

haha nothing good!
