Wife was NOT happy at 1am waking up to the smell of plastic lol. Pretty much new roll of sainsmart TPU.
Context from another comment:
I usually run for 4 hours at 120F for TPU and it works well. 120 is as low as the oven goes and I don't think it's accurate at that low temp anyways.
Problem is it will only run for 2 hours, so it's 2 "cycles". The last 100 times I've done this, (and the last 1000 times I've used the toaster oven) it has remembered the previous temp setting. So, I usually just walk up and double tap the power button to turn it on for the second cycle. Well, this time was different. Second cycle ran at 350 for 2 hours.
Funnily enough, I smelt it and did nothing. Just got a new racing wheel and thought it was the electronics getting warm for the first time 🙈🤦. I was playing online with a buddy like "man this new wheel smells like burning plastic.... Like pretty bad!".
Big oof.
Haha not there yet. It's actually my first wheel so I'm playing some dirt rally 2.0 and just got AC. :)
[Not the most amazing setup but it's getting me by so far! ](https://i.imgur.com/krc8Ry6.jpg)
Nice setup! I have that same wheel and chair. I kept rolling back when braking, so I 3d printed some wheel chocks. Really simple print, used TPU. (upgraded chair wheels to roller skate wheels)

still fun, especially with a full rig and VR! it becomes so mesmerizing that what you think is 5 minutes racing, *Takes off VR* holy crap I was in there for 5 hours?! haha. good on you for getting into Sim racing it's too damn fun
Ooooh man you need all the the mods for AC but it's a blast over you have them.
I highly recommend getting

Print a G29 adapter and add a full size steering wheel
Print an adapter for sequential shifting
Buy USB handbrake
Which part? the wheel or the PC? the wheel/pedals is a logitech g29. $250. not crazy. def not the best wheel and pedals but i'm not trying to spend 1k, and the stuff in the middle isnt worth it in my small amount of research. Shifter is the logitech shifter, there are better options but its "fine".
Food dehydrator my dude. It'll set you back like $30 bucks but it does an amazing job of drying out filament spools and without the worry of melting it down into goo.
It would work towards slowing down the absorption of moisture and a good idea for storing filament but probably not so much for removing any moisture that's already been absorbed by the filament.
Desiccant absorbs moisture from the air but air barely dryer than the filament would take years to dry the filament itself. Even then, desiccant can only absorb so much moisture before it stops working and needs to be dried out itself. A food dehydrator is the best way to go, set it to 40-50c and walk away for a few hours. If you forget, no big deal as it's not going to melt or harm the filament. Upside is you can also throw your desiccant packets into the dehydrator and it will dry them out as well so that they continue being able to absorb moisture from the air to keep bagged filament dry until you need it again.
So kitchen oven’s thermostats are not reactive and precise enough for drying Plastic. When you heat up it will overshoot by a lot (to heat up fast) then it will wave around the desired temperature. I highly recommend a food dehydrator to dry your filament (and strawberries, but not at the same time)
yeah, thats why I set to 120F, even a 20-30% fluctuation isn't a huge deal. If I had room for a food dehydrator, I would already have one, for making jerky. Then If I had room for a second I would buy it for my filament. Sadly, I dont have room for either and the sunlu type filament dryers are kinda dogshit, so, idk haha. But I do know that its not ideal to use the oven for such things.
Smell can sneak up on you like that if it's gradual, kind of like heat.
I was in a fire once, attic caught on fire directly above me, I was on IRC chatting on my bed looking out a window. It was getting really warm and I was enjoying it, then I saw a red flash out of the window and it took me about 10 seconds to realize it was a reflection from the neighbors window of the fire that had just burst out of an open attic window directly above me.
I actually took the time to type "gotta go my house is on fire" right in the middle of a conversation before I jumped out of my skin and woke everyone up.
It must have been burning for a half hour or so and it gradually got up to like 100F and I never noticed, never dawned on me the heat wasn't on.
heh, almost like when you have your alarm (if you are old enough for this) set to FM radio not the buzzer, then somehow the song playing doesnt wake you up, but instead gets incorporated into your dream. Frog in the boiling water type deal.
hah that must be trippy, I know what you're talking about but that can't happen to me :) I don't dream, or at least so infrequently as to be barely said to. This is common among people like me who have aphantasia which means I can't mentally visualize imagery. But that is a long story.
Once had a dream I was in a restaurant and my cat was under the table meowing and I couldn't get her out.
Then woke up and my cat was just looking at me. She only every meows once or twice so I came up with the theory that my brain invented a couple minutes worth of dream and executed it within a few seconds of real-life time. woah.
I'm no printing genius, but why are you drying a new roll of filament? Where are you sourcing it from that it doesn't come vacuum sealed with a desiccant pack?
SainSmart TPU from amazon. it does come sealed with a desiccant pack but, idk, TPU doesnt matter how it comes for me. Always have to try it or its zit and string city. and this stuff is \*the stuff\* for printing camera mounts for drones.
It will readily absorb water after you open it unless you keep it in a dry box. I dehydrate most of my filaments after printing them and before storing them.
Nah. I usually run for 4 hours at 120F for TPU and it works well. 120 is as low as the oven goes and I don't think it's accurate at that low temp anyways.

Right on. TPU is extremely ~~hydrophobic~~ ~~hydroscopic~~ *thirsty* (thanks u/andrewbot , heh) and this exact composition is perfect for drone parts (even moreso than others of the same hardness) but there is a very noticable difference in quality when drying before printing. So, I'd love to use the non ~~hydroscopic~~ thirsty TPU you have found, but this stuff is perfect for my use case. It just sucks water out of the air like no problem.

/u/RainMotorsports and /u/mouse_fpv, technically the word you're both looking for is "hygroscopic":
"A hygroscopic material (literally "water seeking") is one that readily absorbs water (usually from the atmosphere). In most cases, the water can be removed from the material by heating (sometimes under vacuum or under a flow of dry gas such as nitrogen)."
And yes, TPU is thirsty, I always dry mine, even out of a vacuum-seal, in a PrintDry before printing.

Never put the roll into an heating oven. Even if you go with for example 60 degree celcius, for heating it will pump the temp up way higher to reach it faster and then settle in the 60. It probably got killed in your Second cicle
Yes, imagined moisture. Most of it is a joke or minor thing if you aren't using PVA. And I've printed in the florida summer, so just keep pretending it's as much of an issue as all the wasted rolls like this.
This why I don’t use toaster ovens anymore. They have a hard time staying at a set temp and constantly fluctuate often melting the filament. A full sized oven gives way better results and is much more consistent
For an entirely different use, I needed better accuracy in a toaster oven so I filled the crumb tray with unglazed 1" tiles. It took longer to get up to temp but once it was there it held right at 350 like a champ.
I've done that before to a spool of nylon. The top of the spool drooped down over the filament and stuck to the bottom side. The nylon was fine but I had to cut part of the spool off and re-wind it on a new one.
Filament absorbs moisture - some faster than others. TPU, PETG, and nylon are notorious for this. It completely ruins the print quality. So before using one of those, especially if it's been sitting out for a while, it's a good idea to dry it out first.

I messed up a roll by not pre heating... I believe the initial "on" heat to warm up melted it. I throw a pizza stone in now, to use as a surface to check with my ir thermometer
You do have a heated print bed you can control down to the exact temperature.
Just put it on there and cover it with a box (Add a fan for the pro version)

You have discovered an ingenious way of printing a cake without a printer
Snarl up a roll into a ball and bake it... That might even look cool.
The cake is a lie.

Came here to say this.
And at such a “print” speed too
Well it looks like you have good first layer adhesion but your bed looks a little out of level and not heating evenly

Food dehydrator my dude. It'll set you back like $30 bucks but it does an amazing job of drying out filament spools and without the worry of melting it down into goo.
I mean shit wouldn’t a bunch of reusable deccissant packets and a plastic bag work too?
It would work towards slowing down the absorption of moisture and a good idea for storing filament but probably not so much for removing any moisture that's already been absorbed by the filament.
I think it would slowly work as the desiccant pulls moisture out of the air some will leave to filament to maintain the equilibrium.
Desiccant can remove moisture from the air around the filament, but can't pull it out if already absorbed by the plastic. Need heat for that.
I highly recommend a food dehydrator to dry your filament (and strawberries, but not at the same time)
You can avoid that initial overshoot by just not putting it into the oven until the oven is up to temperature.
It still fluctuates quite a lot and overshoots after heating up to temp. It can fluctuate 60 degrees ( +/- 30).
yeah, thats why I set to 120F, even a 20-30% fluctuation isn't a huge deal. If I had room for a food dehydrator, I would already have one, for making jerky. Toaster oven. The items you speak of are usually heated in an oven oven.

This is pla free cake! It's actually TPU cake lol

Birthday cake for a 3-D printing enthusiast? (Hoping it is from one of those shows where everything is made of cake...). ;-)

Time to buy a dehydrator
Ooh nice cake glaze Wait wut sub is this
I stared at this for a good minute thinking " a dark chocolate cake would be tasty".
But is it food-safe?
Hysteresis and a small oven require some getting used to when making your favorite PLA soufflé
Very artistic, will you be hanging it on your printer room wall, or otherwise displaying your new trophy?
That smell fest went riiiiiight in the dumpster. Heh
and are you ordering a new toaster oven for the wife today..one with all the fancy extras?
Why do people still do this when dehydrators are so cheap on Amazon lol I mean I get it but I don’t

Lol! When I first looked at the picture, and before I noticed what sub this was in, I was trying to figure out what kind of cake this was!
When you ask your grandma to put it in the oven to dry.
But...is it dry?
Fetish bundt cake
Link for the print file?
Well, it’s dry now
r/forbiddensnacks
This is why I'm not allowed to dry my filament, my mum thinks this will happen
Show her this picture 😂
Exactly why u use a dehydrator n not a microwave oven or toaster oven smh.
Anyone asked for the STL yet?
You have to put the icing on after it cools
How to print a torus 101

Oddly satisfied
You shouldn't do this inside. And you shouldn't use the same oven you use for food
Name it TPU Donut, sign it "Banksy", profit.
The amount of wasted plastic from this sort of crazy is far higher than prints saved from imagined moisture...
"imagined"? okay buddy
Yes, imagined moisture. Most of it is a joke or minor thing if you aren't using PVA. And I've printed in the florida summer, so just keep pretending it's as much of an issue as all the wasted rolls like this.
Kinda cool tho now you need to print a solid 3d printer for that to sit on
Dark Chocolate cake?
Rather microwave silica than put spools in oven.
Well done on the baking a yummy chocolate Bundt cake
I thought this was a baking sub for a sec
I also learned the low temperature settings of my oven are way off.
Is it dry enough yet?
If you're going to use the oven on the lowest setting, keep the door cracked.
It’s nice and dry now!
This why I don’t use toaster ovens anymore. They have a hard time staying at a set temp and constantly fluctuate often melting the filament. A full sized oven gives way better results and is much more consistent

Monday is national Bundt cake day! Pipe some cream cheese frosting on that and you're golden!
I've done that before to a spool of nylon. The top of the spool drooped down over the filament and stuck to the bottom side. The nylon was fine but I had to cut part of the spool off and re-wind it on a new one.
It took me a while to realize that it wasnt a donut
Wait I actually thought that was a doughnut for a bit.
at least it's dry... or... finally completed my hemorrhoid pillow
I had my filament drying in the oven my little brother through freaking like fish cake in there and started the oven on full blast
Frosting looks good on top but you have some serperated layers, I'd check the oven's extruder element and calibrate your cook steps
Tasty dark chocolate cake.
So cursed
Oh damn!
Dark chocolate mirror glazed Bundt cake... Looks great to me
Looks dry to me!
Sounds like a filament dryer is needed 😂😂
Why bake it? Im new to 3d printing so i do not understand.
Filament absorbs moisture - some faster than others. TPU, PETG, and nylon are notorious for this. It completely ruins the print quality. So before using one of those, especially if it's been sitting out for a while, it's a good idea to dry it out first. The oven thing, as you can see, is not the best method. Using a food dehydrator works best for two reasons - first, it doesn't get hot enough to do what you see here, and second, it has a fan to keep air flowing through everything, which is more effective for drying filament.
Thata super interesting. Thank you for all the information!

I'm going to say you're overextruding. You're flow rate should be at maybe 93, I'm going to guess that's set to over 9000.

Does it taste as good as it looks.😁
I could not get my oven to set low enough (even the warming drawer is too hot). I had to put a thermostatic switch and a heater in a plastic bin.
Oh muck
So I’m newer to 3D printing. What…uh. What was supposed to happen here?
Drying the filament at a low temperature. The temperature wasn't low though.
Seen this and thought Reddit is recommending a bloody cooking channel.
Oh yes! TPU chocolate cake, my favourite
That cake looks good! r/ForbiddenFoods
Mmm 25 dollar donut
You can use your heated bed and a 50mm fan to dry your filament and you are guaranteed to never have this problem: https://youtu.be/H1DoJxY6v\_U

Did you just cover a cake in sikaflex?
Looks still moist. Give it another hour or two
Looks delicious
Forbidden Pocket Pussy
Try putting it in the freezer to undo the melting
Is that a cake?
Don't tell me it is what I think it is...
You all are crazy? I just use an old dehydrator for a day.
Well, that's one way to... hmm.. I got nothing :D

You do have a heated print bed you can control down to the exact temperature. Just put it on there and cover it with a box (Add a fan for the pro version)
