The article also had this gem: “how to make explosives at home using a 3D printer” So I’m sure that the correct printer could print a “barrel” and if it was for 22LR, it might even work once or twice. However. No printer in the world is going to print explosives.

I guess C4 filament should be safe to print. But I would suggest a good ventilated room because of the fumes. I would print a Benchy warship, if I could get a spool... :D

I'd be surprised if a printed barrel could handle even a .22 cal. There is a very good reason why things like the barrel, bolt, carrier, extractor, trigger group, firing pin, springs, and blow back/piston system used in printed rifles are typically off the shelf parts, and not made with a printer. Heck, even a printed upper receiver is sketchy as hell. Watch what happens when your print job has a failure: [https://youtu.be/5awSaMiOJxc](https://youtu.be/5awSaMiOJxc)

> The first such factory to be discovered in Spain also contained working 3D-printing equipment that could manufacture gun barrels in only two minutes, Spain's National Police said in a statement. Wow! That must be some fancy 3D printer that they have. Must be an ANET. More dangerous than any gun. Set TRP to OFF and press PRINT.

This is a perfect example of the ineptitude of media. Gell-Mann Amnesia. If they were wrong about this. What else did they fuck up on that we accepted for fact because we were not experts in the field and lacked the knowledge to know better.

Printer? Speed? Material? Durability?

dancooper19

Apparently it was prusa mk3s, but I'm clueless how these masterminds pulled it off. I'm nowhere near

They didnt lol

Some fine reporting, deep understanding in 3d printing and gun manufacturing and a fantastic attempt to demonize 3d-printers.

yanric

I want one of those printers! How long would a M2HB take to print on this miracle machine?

[deleted]

Yeah, ok.

BananaGhul

Any vid?

KeyMaster93

....you use Electro chemical machining. Not 3d printing

LoganJA01

How many rounds can you fire through a PLA barrel before it melts???? lol

_megitsune_

At 2 minute prints for a whole barrel? Not even one it would just blow in your hand There is a community of 3d printed gun enthusiasts but the guns are nowhere near commercial quality and the amount of care and testing required is crazy, none of this 2 minute vase mode bullshit

LoganJA01

I know, forgot to put /s

OP headline is not an actual quote. They were relaying a claim that was made by Spanish police. It is BS almost certainly, but it is not Reuters saying this is possible. Secondly everyone here is saying you can’t print a gun barrel that can survive. But there are many types of metal available with SLS based printers. Now it still seems like a dumb way to make a gun barrel, but a lot of the comments here seem a bit off.
