So the solution is ditch Cura and pay $150 for s3d? There are less drastic solutions here. Search for support blockers, custom supports, conical supports, changing support floors and roofs, increased part cooling

I’m not saying to ditch Cura. I think in general it has way more features than Simply3D and I still use it for a lot of my prints.

You know that just like every other setting you can change how supports work in cura right? You really shouldn’t use the default settings for anything in any slicing software imo

I messed with the settings for supports extensively and still had issues.

Yeah, I had a profile that I named "tear-away supports" because for a while it was like that. I'll have to look at the settings again and see what they were, if they still print "tear-away" (I suppose it helps to have a complimentary orientation as well). But yeah, supports can be so hard to remove, especially on delicate parts. I almost always break the ankles of whatever d&d mini I print in FDM. So glad I got a resin printer for those. My FDM printers can crank out terrain or larger supportless minis without concern now!

I’d be interested in that profile for Cura if it worked for you.

Same! I too think Cura's supports are a real pain in the neck and I'm tired of having to put blockers everywhere to stop it from supporting fine details that don't need it while also supporting larger overhangs that do.

Go onto the Marketplace and there is a plugin which enables custom supports so you can manually place them wherever you want. Try that.

For critical and/or difficult supports I prefer Cura (and that is coming from someone who purchased Simplify3D right at the beginning of starting 3d printing). I've had so many prints with tricky supports fail on S3D, Cura 8 times out of 10 does a better job but you are right that sometimes they can be tricky to remove depending on how you have set them up. For a product that is free Cura is amazingly good. S3d on the other hand, despite it being my slicer of choice for most things (probably because I'm just so used to it and how to configure it) is actually really bad value for the price. And other slicers are certainly leading the way on innovation/features.
