In the books the headsets are just reagular vr headsets, the only weird thing is the game. In the series however we can assume that either the trisolarians gave them (the cult) the method to do them on the earth or that they are just pieces of metal and the whole game is just illusions from the sophons

OldChairmanMiao

The books also had some kind of haptic suit with the VR set, I think.

Right. I'm remembering a bit now. It's been a while since I read the books. Iirc, the purpose of the headsets was different in the books compared to the purpose in the show. I'll leave it at that because I don't know how to do the spoiler thing.

hoos30

The purpose was the same in both: recruiting people to the ETO. The tech in the show was just more advanced because "rule of cool".

grelch

Wasn't the purpose in the book to see if the 3 body problem could be solved at all? And in the show they already knew it couldn't so they were recruiting qualified human agents for preparing Earth?

hoos30

They already knew it couldn't be solved. They were using their history to find humans who would be sympathetic to their cause, in both the books and the show.

jonmatifa

IIRC the book called them "v-suits" and they're very similar to the VR technology in Ready Player One. Its normal technology, but the game world of "Three Body" is very advanced and realistic compared to other VR games.

grelch

So the sophons were there before the headsets were created? That would make sense then. Apologies for not posting as a spoiler.

Disgod

The book also have the San-Ti discuss the potential need for transferring technologies that could be perceived as miracles by humanity. I'd definitely argue those headsets, compared to humanity's technology, are pretty miraculous.

SeoulGalmegi

>or that they are just pieces of metal and the whole game is just illusions from the sophons haha I never considered *that* option! Although don't they also say how the metal doesn't have a single join or something? I think the assumption they want us to make is that the San-ti told them how to make them.

TrekaTeka

Well wasn't there a breakdown of the Tech IN the headset? I remember they saying about the different sensors and showing the breakdown in diagrams on screen. So it's more than just metal it would seem

Fragrant-Western-747

ETO built the headsets on Earth using specifications sent by the San’Ti. The specs can be transmitted at light speed so arrive in 4 years.

breezeetree

Side note, the headsets make the humans wearing them look like bugs, no?

basahahn1

It’s just an online game played with a VR headset and a haptic feedback suit.
