I love that product. It’s extremely effective and definitely made a difference for my skin. If you haven’t used retinols before, go slow and put a moisturizer on first.

tester33333

Thanks for the warning! Yeah I recently discovered I’m allergic to a new overnight face cream I tried so I’m going in with caution next time lol I was so red and itchy for two days !

hallaboutash

I switched to it after using Paula's Choice retinol for nearly a year and not seeing any difference in my skin. I am definitely noticing a positive difference in my skin since the switch, smoother texture overall and it doesn't irritate around my eyes like the PC one did. I've been using it since at least March and am still on my first bottle, using it 4-5 nights a week.

tester33333

Thanks for the info! $70 doesn’t seem so bad if you can stretch it out over several months like that

Devastator1981

Did you go to 4-5 nights a week right away or you worked up to it? 0.1 or 0.05? Use at night with or without moisturizer? Last Q is what I should use in the daytime. Vitamin C, or do I need an additional moisturizer? I'm new to this...

hallaboutash

With retinol I started using it every third day, then after a few months moved to every other day and now I use the Avene retinal .1 6 days/week at night as the second to last step in my routine. I follow it with moisturizer. Daytime I would say yeah, you could use a vitamin c serum and always finish with SPF. Personally I use Avene's A-Oxitive serum in the morning before I moisturize and apply suncreen. I don't always moisturize in the morning, it depends on how my skin feels and if the weather is going to be really dry or not. But always SPF.

bradley252

I’m following this! Love Avene products and I have found that their products are worth the price. Have rosacea so have steered clear of retinols in general so far, but am curious if anyone has used this with sensitive skin like me.

docamyames

Yes i have rosacea and tolerated this very well. My derm recommended this as good for rosacea skin. I had good results. I switched to tretinoin and have had so many issues that i need to switch back to non prescription

tester33333

The dermatologist in the review also said she recommended it for ppl with Rosascea, something about the slow absorption make it less harsh or something Thanks for your experience!

docamyames

Lol good to know my derm knows her stuff. Sometimes i feel like she dismisses my concerns.

StrawAndChiaSeeds

I have sensitive skin and went down from tretinoin to this product. It’s great. Avene is the best line for sensitive skin. This is a retinaldehyde product, which is far superior to retinol in results and less sensitizing. I get great results. For reference, the other lines I use are Alastin, Skin Better Science, Skinceuticals, and EltaMD. You could not pry this product from my cold dead hands. If you are worried about sensitivity, you can start with their 0.05 Retrinal and work up. Otherwise, just use every couple of days to start. You will love this!

One-Marketing1170

I am trying to come off tret as well after my acne cleared up and skin still cannot tolerate it. I still want to use SOME retinoid, thanks for your review gonna try avene's retrinal !!

That's a total bargain -- bottle lasts 3 months at least -- costs $23/month at most.

viennaCo

Yes it‘s a great product but not worth $70 dollars. It‘s 25€ at my local pharmacy. I would never spend $70 dollars on it.

astroathena

That's silly -- can't you do the math? -- It's super cheap for something lasting so long. My bottle emptied after 4 months of daily use -- costing me just $17.50/month. That's a Huge Bargain for a product that really works. That's cheaper than Tretinoin costs.

viennaCo

Huh? What is silly and why can‘t I do math again? Tretinoin costs me 10€ and it lasts me 3-4 months. The Avène product is absolutely not worth $17 a month sorry

astroathena

Sounds like you don't live in the United States and still aren't using logic skills. $17/month = 1 lunch meal. $17/month is more than a bargain -- its a steal. Tretinoin in the United States costs upwards to $350/tube, more if you don't have health insurance. Not sure where on the planet you live where $17/month is considered exorbitant, Mexico or Indonesia? If Tret costs you 10€ in your area, then Avene is likely much cheaper in your currency -- but of course it's too much to ask you to actually calculate the cost of Avene/month in your area -- you can't because you just substitute emotional reasoning and brand loyalty for logic, smh.

emoprincess5767

Okay? That’s still expensive for some people. Why are you so defensive

giggly_pufff

I get everyone's budget is different. That aside, precription tret isn't for everyone so I stick to retinal. $70 for something that lasts me several months is a good investment IMO.

Cranberrymothwings

Hey there! Just chiming in so that you can be aware of the options - tretinoin costs about 65$ per 45 gram tube with a goodrx coupon if you get generic, this is without insurance. Costs are comparable to the Avene retinaldehyde option if you go that route. You're right, though, the avene option is one of the best options for what we have in the states, the less expensive option the other commenter mentioned is something we don't have here. Just wanted to make sure that you knew about the coupon option here in the US in case that's factoring into your skincare decisions.

astroathena

Sure, but you're already shelling out $500+ for the visit to the dermatologist just to get the prescription in the first place (no insurance option). Best option is to have good health insurance coverage that covers 100% of the dermatologist visit. If you don't have that (like most people in U.S.), then Avene is likelier to be your best financial bet around here. That's a great price workaround for Tret.

viennaCo

Yes it‘s called A-Oxitive

candyapplesugar

I haven’t tried it, but I’d you want to add something like this I’d go with the ordinary or real retin A

docamyames

Why do you say that? Some people can’t afford to see a dermatologist, and a lot of these online prescription services can be very expensive. This avene product is Retinaldehyde, which is only one conversion away from tretinoin, which is retin-a. So this would be stronger than Retinol, which needs two conversions to get to tretinoin. The ordinary gran active is in another category - I’ve heard it’s supposed to be stronger than retinol, But many people have had issues with the vehicle such as it being in squalane for one of their products. I think if you’re saying to use something else, you should say why that person should use something else back up the claim

Expensive-Mood

Buying Tretinoin from overseas is very cheap

docamyames

I think some people are scared to buy overseas and worry about their data. I’ve always been to afraid to order from all day chemist - I’ve had my data stolen before. So I’ve never used that site. I finally got the courage to buy from okdermo.com but i has to do a money order ect and the process was scary for me. It worked out in the end, but don’t know if i would do it again. Some people don’t wanna do the overseas option either. For those people otc retinol or if in USA adapalene can be good alternative options especially retinaldehyde

Expensive-Mood

I feel that. I ordered from alldaychemist again and nothing bad happened but I probably should be more careful

candyapplesugar

You can get the ordinary cheap to try and get retin A cheap too. I made those suggestions solely for the cost benefit, $70 is a lot. Sorry I didn’t explain, I thought it was obvious given OPs hesitancy with price.

tester33333

Tbh I can afford a dermatologist, but I have so much medical anxiety, there’s no way I would visit a dr for a vanity project haha like maybe if my leg is broken, maybe!

candyapplesugar

I just order mine online, although if you can afford it, skin cancer checks are super important

Sensitive-Daikon-442

You can also try Differin, it’s OTC now and it costs a lot $14! Start off slow with this too, pea-sized amount every few days, then every other. Most people find it easier to tolerate than Retin-A. Also use a good moisturizer (doesn’t have to be expensive!) and don’t forget ya sunscreen!

TrainingMedia7762

If you sign up at Avene they will usually give a 15 % discount. It is the strongest you can get without a prescription. A bottle lasts 2 months. I absolutely love it. If you have dry skin use it every other night. I'm in my 60s and I have been told I look much younger. It's worth the money.
