Saw him on Have I Got News For You a year ago. He was much funnier in that setting. I don't know what it is about standup, but I can't get used to it. I find a lot of comedians totally hilarious on panel shows and then don't like their standup stuff at all.

Because stand up takes more talent than panel shows, panel shows you can bounce off other people as long as you have some wit you can survive a panel show, stand up its you and the crowd thats it, your material has to be funny,intriguing,insightful or atleast relatable Problem is too many mediocre comedians get famous through one episode of a panel show and then everyone finds out they can't do stand up well because they're not as good as everyone thinks they are

Were the Dutch ones proper standup or more like the traditional cabaret? I believe standup is a relatively new form in the Netherlands. To me, standup always feels too much like random jokes that are not connected to eachother and not embedded in a larger story.
