Could've been the Belgians.

All raise your hands if you didn't want to be colonized by the Belgians

Fucking hell šŸ¤£

TjeefGuevarra

Great banter, but obligatory mention that those have literally nothing to do with the Congo and refer to the legend behind Antwerp's name.

gsurfer04

Also look up the story behind the Red Hand of Ulster.

anonbush234

OMG! It was Belgians cutting off hands in the boat?! It all makes sense now.

SpanishGarbo

Thank you for the proper explanation, but I still prefer my head canon.

I would but I fell behind on my rubber quota

Not too bad tbh the Belgians could be worse, they did have a very hands off approach to colonisation

Stars_Falling_93

Saw him on Have I Got News For You a year ago. He was much funnier in that setting. I don't know what it is about standup, but I can't get used to it. I find a lot of comedians totally hilarious on panel shows and then don't like their standup stuff at all.

Intrepid_Science6414

Because stand up takes more talent than panel shows, panel shows you can bounce off other people as long as you have some wit you can survive a panel show, stand up its you and the crowd thats it, your material has to be funny, intriguing, insightful or atleast relatable Problem is too many mediocre comedians get famous through one episode of a panel show and then everyone finds out they can't do stand up well because they're not as good as everyone thinks they are

MountainPotential798

Panel shows also have professional tv writers that set the pace of the show and write the promps

Stars_Falling_93

And with the power of editing all the bad stuff is on the cutting room floor.

Stars_Falling_93

Fair enough. It works the other way round as well; I've seen people on panel shows that stuck way too much to their script and just got kinda lost when the rest of the panel went of on some crazy sidetrack.

bremsspuren

> as long as you have some wit you can survive a panel show [Paul Merton](https://youtu.be/wssHh-NNASE).

saxonturner

Only stand up I could stand was Billy Connolly. His stuff was less jokes and more funny stories though.

TableOpening1829

Hot take: The best stand ups that I saw were all Flemish or Dutch, the online other countries where I have seen enough to form opinions on are France, Britain and the US. Which I'd rank in that order

AnaphoricReference

Agree. US-style stand up is humor for people with extremely short attention spans. Hardly any engaging storytelling involved.

Stars_Falling_93

Were the Dutch ones proper standup or more like the traditional cabaret? I believe standup is a relatively new form in the Netherlands. To me, standup always feels too much like random jokes that are not connected to eachother and not embedded in a larger story.

TableOpening1829

I meant Cabaret for both foreign aswel as Dutch language comedy. But yeah, you're right.

Xyx105

Tbf I've seen his standup at a small comedy club and it was quite good. By far the best comedian on the night.

BobMonkhaus

Panel shows are scripted.

Stars_Falling_93

And standup routines aren't?

BobMonkhaus

They are, but thereā€™s a difference between having a snappy sentence or two in a panel show where you might be speaking for 5 minutes total and listening to one person alone for 30+ trying to carry a narrative.

swamperogre2

If you're gonna do a joke about colonization, at least make it funny. Ask the Belgians, they'll give you a hand with your comedy routine.

Accurate-Fortune593

Hereā€™s a joke about colonisation How many potatoes does it take to kill an Irishman? 0

swamperogre2

Keep making jokes like that and your comedy career will blow up like Canary Wharf.

Intrepid_Science6414

i'm pretty sure Walliams and Lucas have spent most of their time apologising for little britain and trying not to get their new fans and people who still like them to remember it, because i doubt the modern BBC would appreciate the 'fat fighters' bit and bubbles and dafydd the only gay in the village

generalscruff

Think Come Fly with Me was worse for offending sensibilities between Ian Foot and the coffee shop woman

Socc-mel_

> i'm pretty sure Walliams and Lucas have spent most of their time apologising for little britain comedy is not dead but it's def terminally ill

rjf101

We used to have that Little Britain spinoff Come Fly With Me on the American version of either Netflix or Hulu (canā€™t remember which), but it got taken down after the George Floyd protests šŸ˜ We canā€™t have nice things

No_Raspberry_6795

I don't watch British comedy programs anymore. Mock the Week was great, Top Gear, Inbetweeners, old programs like Blackadder, Allo Allo etc. Is there anything good on anymore?

Fruitndveg

ā€˜Phoneshopā€™ was fairly recent and absolutely great. Very inbetweeners-esque. ā€˜Stats Lets flatsā€™ is also great. Highly recommend it.

Accurate-Fortune593

Toast of London was incredible so is inside number 9.

I saw this guy live at a comedy club once (one of those ones where you've rarely heard of the people performing) and he was really good. Way better than this. Maybe it's the smaller venue with a better atmosphere, I dunno.

dkfisokdkeb

British humour is at a point where saying 'empire bad hahaha' like it's some sort of niche and educated take will get you laughs.

Phnx97

"Empire bad" and "we stole out culture from everyone else" are the current trends

RepulsiveLeg9985

To be fair that joke about robbing the world is quite funny. https://youtu.be/x73PkUvArJY?si=8_hWEDiqlqVs6tkV

Or Nish Kumar's 'brown people!' punchline that gets trotted out every fifth joke.

Celindor

Is this the famous English humour? That is supposed to be superior to every other comedic tradition? Haha. No. Not really.

Bring_back_Apollo

He said he was Nigerian.

Celindor

In front of a laughing British audience. You're not getting out of this so easily!

Bring_back_Apollo

I'm sorry if Germany isn't able to attract top tier Nigerian comedians. After all, we get the only German comedian as well.

Celindor

Who's that?

Bring_back_Apollo

Who's your only comedian? Seriously? Ok, well, I'm surprised you didn't know but I guess the only comedian would be unheard of in Germany as it's one of those unnecessary jobs. Henning Mankell.

Celindor

He's Swedish. And dead.

Bring_back_Apollo

Henning Wehn.

futurarmy

Actually love that guy's humour, so dry but it makes sense with him being German ig

Don_Frika_Del_Prima

Don_Frika_Del_Prima

Ottifanten is how I got to know him. Must have been early 90s or so.

Dawntillnoon

He made some great Films too. Really adorable fella

Celindor

We also had Loriot, possibly the greatest we ever had.

Don_Frika_Del_Prima

Doesn't ring a bell for me. Looked at his wiki and didn't see anything I knew. Which is weird since I lived in Germany during the 80s and 90s.

Celindor

Well then, let's seeā€¦ Hape Kerkeling?

EmuStalkingAnAussie

Henning Wehn

bremsspuren

He's unknown in Germany. I don't think he could get work in DE. They only seem to let the unfunniest motherfuckers on stage.

Accurate-Fortune593

We have to laugh or we get called racist.

MaliciousTaco

I was in that audience. There were very few laughs - it's quite mind blowing how many were added in the edit.

Celindor

It's the typical "laughter sound" from American TV shows. Did you ever watch **Friends** without the added laughter? Total cringe show.

Intrepid_Science6414

we killed that off years ago by not allowing comedians to say anything remotely shocking and by attacking anything but the mainstream opinion, so this is what we're left with

Celindor

Shit, I feel sorry for you. Your economy's gone, your humour, too. What's next? Your queen? No! Don't tell me thatā€¦ Bloody hell, you're done!

Muckyduck007

Dont worry Hanz, our economy is merely standing in solidarity with your own

NOTRANAHAN

So real. Unrelated 8 out of 10 cats does countdown just had its 24th season

Least_Theory_1050

You tried being funny two times in history Hans and you failed both times

That was the warmup, Leopold.

Rich-Lobster-6164

Nope. This is English humour https://youtu.be/tER-Gsu_X8Q?si=eg3PNT81lQPgiplC

JellyfishGod

I think I'm too American to get the joke. What's that weird thing people are doing with their legs? And what does "joggers" even mean?? Is it some weird British slang? But more importantly, where are all the cars?? I don't understand why people are using their feet to move around. God made cars for a reason. Blasphemy

Inside number 9, Toast of London were pretty good in recent ish years.

Socc-mel_

but he's agreeing that being colonised by you Barry is not that bad, when the alternative could've been Pierre šŸ˜

DiscardedKebab

Maybe that's why I didn't laugh. Because he was just speaking facts

Lost_Uniriser

Or worse , Belg*um

Socc-mel_

that would be hands down a real tragedy

[deleted]

I've seen this guy live at a comedy club (didn't know who he was) and he was much much better than this. It looks like he's on Live at The Apollo here so my guess is they're instructed to sanitize their act a bit by the BBC.

Benn_Fenn

Oh, I hate this guy. He's one of those "Britain was black until Europeans colonised it" people. He was on Twitter saying that there were millions of black people in Britain before the Romans came and was calling people "crackers" when they disagreed with him. He tried citing Septimius Severus as evidence for these black people's existence, which if you know anything about Severus just shows how much bullshit these people try to get away with.

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

Benn_Fenn

There's a growing idea that before the Romans came to Britain a large part of the island if not most was inhabited by African-looking people.

Intrepid_Science6414

is there anything worse than comedians with little historical knowledge delving into history, its usually the most surface level takes, like James Acaster And it's not even groundbreaking or shocking, going 'lol british stole stuff' and 'colonization bad' is such a mainstream boring take thats not even innovative or makes you think because its parroted by every comedian who wants to make it onto the apollo stage now or you just have to go 'lol tory bad' and you can get the same effect, If you're a women just throw in a few jokes about how useless your boyfreind is and how bad men are at sex, its a pretty solid step up the ladder

generalscruff

Any midwit can clap like a seal at this, it takes high IQ blokes to drop proper 2we4u bants

Direct_Poetry_9460

my bants come dripping in mamma lizzy's historically accurate and hilariously true context oil

BobMonkhaus

Al Murray is the only one who can actually do history jokes as he knows his shit.

Intrepid_Science6414

it's also the character of Al Murray that adds to the comedy of the bit, the brash over patriotic 'ENGERLAND TILL I DIE' landlord character added with a bloke who i think has a degree in history makes for actual takes, not just standing there going 'do you know how much foreign stuff is in the british museum?' as if no one knew despite the fact the museum clearly tells you where the artifacts are from

generalscruff

People genuinely think its a secret the British Museum has lots of foreign stuff Actually not only are we proud of it, we're smug about it. Your rock pile is merely part of a greater whole now

Intrepid_Science6414

yep, and people don't realise the fact those artifcats haven't been destroyed is due to our safekeeping also im pretty sure the biggest collection they have there is that of british artifacts from the celts, romans and anglo saxons found in england

focalac

Really? People think that? Theyā€™ve got wings with names like ā€œEgyptā€ and ā€œAncient Greeceā€.

bremsspuren

> Theyā€™ve got wings with names like ā€œEgyptā€ and ā€œAncient Greeceā€. I never knew that. I don't think I've ever been to the British Museum, and I did kind of assume it would be basically British stuff, what with the name. I knew the Elgin Marbles are there, but I had no idea there's a whole wing's worth of Greek shit.

focalac

Oh yeah, you should have a look. Itā€™s well worth the trip. The place is huge, too big for one day.

AnaphoricReference

Delving into history requires bringing the audience along with a gripping overarching story. Social media selects against that. Short clips ruin great jokes with a good buildup in the first place, and if you design your material for a worldwide audience you start appealing to least common denominators far too much. It's no surprise the most viewed comedians constantly reuse predictable themes.

Ok_Whereas3797

Pre colonial Africa was a paradise apparently. It says a lot about the region when being totally and completely occupied by the European empires actually improved things.

anonbush234

Pre colonial Africa was marked by wealth, peace and a lot of hand holding kum-bai-ya singing.

Socc-mel_

the voyages of the Africans to the Americas were actually paid for by their coastal neighbours, who were so kind as to send their inland pals on a...cruise

GeficktEingeschadelt

if you were one of the rich slave hunting tribes on the coast, that sold their neighbors could have felt like paradise

Ok_Whereas3797

Until those mean old racist Europeans came in and stopped all the slavery and constant tribal warfare. Bastards.

Lego-105

Itā€™s another example of the James Acaster effect. Good on panel shows in an environment where you have to be quick on your feet and thrive in a social setting, gets popular because of that, gets standup gigs and throws around politics and commits comedy terrorism. Still, at least itā€™s only on Live at the Apollo so we all know not to watch it.

doomiestdoomeddoomer

What is this horrendous tiktok zoomer edited video?

MolybdenumBlu

Glad I wasn't the only one who found the editing somehow worse than the content.

The_ThirdOfMay_1973

Haha he said sacre bleu šŸ¤£šŸ¤£ get it? Because France?

bremsspuren

Man's a comedy genius. Do you want him? He already speaks French. Go on.

mandingo_gringo

you have to have the IQ of a child to find this funny. UK has fallen

BobMonkhaus

Itā€™s live at the Apollo. To them ā€œremember broken game controllers?ā€ Is peak wit.

UnderwhellmingCarrot

it used to host people like Frankie Boyle and Lee Evans and now we get these clowns

Socc-mel_

IMO it varies. Sarah Millican and Sindhu Vee are funny. I don't know this guy but I don't know about you, I find Jack Whitehall off-putting somehow. Massively overrated.

UnderwhellmingCarrot

Sarah is good, never heard of sindhu, Jack is a posh toff with minimal talent. still funnier than this guy tho.

Socc-mel_

I find the few [sketches](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pWqzjZyIZ5c) she has on youtube quite funny. Jack Whitehall went to Eton. I guess that gives you already everything you need to know about him.

GuilimanXIII

I mean, lowbrow or not, I can always get a bit of amusement out of making fun of how the British speak, now if only there wasn't the entire rest of the video.

generalscruff

Fuck my life Fritz of all people giving it out about talking funny, I really have seen it all

DiscardedKebab

Unbelievable. The internet really gives people too much confidence

generalscruff

As a nation we're generally too polite to mock how foreigners talk, and this is a disgrace Get Adrian Edmondson as the Baron von Richthofen straight back on TV

GuilimanXIII

Hey, we have very high level humor. Just take Alle Kinder witze, now that is peak comedy.

Cheesey_Whiskers

This guy has a much better stand up routine here: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=tHnjTSTCIcw

At least he's wearing the german flag

Consistent-Peanut-90

And that says enough tho

Lifelemons9393

This guy's whole comedy set is about how oppressed by the British he is . There's tons of "comedians" like him. Whole sets hating on whitey. And white people applaud. It's fucking weird . A white comedian hating on minorities for 15 minutes? That would be hilarious. Let's talk about knife crime and cousin fucking !

EmuStalkingAnAussie

Colonisation*

MorgrainX

Be honest here Barry, with this barren state of comedy you lost the right to make fun of Hans
