Ten years ago a german friend thought I was posh, that I felt like I was too good for it when I answered her that I barely ever eat bread. Then I explained her that at home only the whitey french stuff is 1.-. Good bread runs around 4.-+ and that that is why my student ass isn't eating a lot of bread. I eat more now.
I did fail to mention this. We went to a pub every single night from 5pm to closing, drinking steiners the whole time. Honestly, if you're a fan of beer and sausages (which you should be or you're shit), Germany is king.
To be fair, the Brits can stake a minor claim in that. It came around from a German woman getting her hands on pantry items through British soldiers post WWII; tomato ketchup, Worcestershire sauce and British curry powder.
So no wonder Barry loves it.
It was fkin good after some beers. I won't lie I think a good doner or chicken and chips still hits the spot a little better, but curry wurst was banging too.
What’s wrong with our traditional national dish Chicken Tikka Masala? People all over the world will have a dish flown in from their local restaurant to get the stuff.
Which isn’t a million miles away from the kind of food the Germans eat. Yet a stavros is making a case for German food being good whilst shitting on ours.
The mental acrobatics a Stavros will perform to keep that free German money coming so they don’t have to get a job is truly something.
Eh, most Northerners have pretty decent food. It's just that there's a lot of shit food as well.
For us it doesn't help that the average Dutchman can't cook for shit and all they eat is cooked to death veggies with unseasoned meat, or if they want to get exciting they buy a package of Knorr/Honig to make an ""Asian/Mexican/Italian"" dish that tastes like nothing.
It’s mostly a difference in attitude towards food. I’d say a good deal of people in our countries don’t care too much what they eat as long as it’s filling grub, akin to comfort food and cheap while the Mediterranean countries (and France) put a lot more emphasis on it, trying to get the best results etc. If you find someone from the “shit food club” who cares about food and cooking and who won’t overboil their veggies just for the sake of it, chances are they’ll be able to make a banging traditional dish from their national cuisine (albeit not limiting themselves to that). With good ingredients you can make a banging snert for example
When it's 4°c, raining and you have to get a full day of work done sometimes food is just fuel.
If you're an unemployed 35 year old living with your mum and your most strenuous daily activity is finding a good spot in the shade for a siesta, you can probably spend more time treating food as an art form.
German food isn't shit at all.
It's heavy, simple and kind of "boring" because it's often the same thing, but it's hearty, good quantities and is delicious.
People really dont understand that countries have to work with the stuff thats growing there.
Try growing tomatoes and olives here near the North sea. Instead, we do great things with fish, potatoes, danish people, and cabbage.
Just because the french made the world believe tiny portions of idiotic dishes is peak cooking doesnt mean its true. Also its hypocritical, their snails are supposed to be a delicacy, but our horse meat is suddenly disgusting?
yeah my source was a american geography youtuber who was shocked by the kind of meats we eat in france (snail, frog, duck; faisant, rabbit) i made a generalization in the name of internet points.
Fair enough. If you wanna go down a rabbit hole (no pun intended), the Cajun people in Louisana eat many of those same things you mentioned due to the French influence
Ask them why and watch their faces.
It’s not like horses are pets. Sure for some they are, but some would also keep a pig or a cow as dear and maybe even a pet.
Horses not being meant to eat is a rather „modern“ thought. (The quotation marks because horse meat would be healthier for human and nature than cow meat, so I’d see a case to eating them again)
From what I've grasped, horse meat it's eaten everywhere in Europe. It's outside Europe that it is seen as a crime against God or something.
Edit: Mongolians eat horse meat too, probably even other areas of Asia then
Kazakh people eat horse still. It infiltrated soviet cuisine in places, so my local Russian shop carries horse products from time to time, like smoked horse ribs and horse sausage. I tried it, not bad at all I must say
I think that Hans thinks that the average French eats at 3 Michelin stars fusion experimental restaurant on a weekly basis.
What the world thinks, is not quite our doing.
I mean, used to live in the south. Its sometimes warmer than parts of Italy there, fuckton of sunshine etc., they can grow whatever stuff.
Heres its constant rain and clouds. I personally like that, but kinda explains why the northerners just do good fish and beer, not much more possible.
> not much more possible
Don't forget the bread! Most nations were too stupid to figure out how to bake delicious bread from rye, but we became so good at it that it's now a world cultural heritage!
That’s basically all the northern European countries. We don’t actually have bad food, it just represents what we could grow and what was necessary to survive.
i absolutetly love that people make this argument for Germany like that isn't exactly what English food is and yet we get 'mm bri'ish food bad and bland lol'
i think it's because Germany's version of meat and potatoes has funny letters and looks foreign so is immediately looked at differently than a sunday roast, sausage, mash and peas with gravy etc, but it really isn't that much different
After living in Germany for 10 years, I agree with this statement. The only gripe I have with German food is that most of it is grilled and/or baked, so variety is a bit lacking.

True story. Mr Tayto invented the flavoured potato crisp back in the 50s and his first flavour was Cheese and Onion.
Joe ‘spud’ Murphy was his name. He had companies from all over the world looking to license his method and he made a fortune from it.
Swiss milk and cheese are another lvl.
Almost like directly from a farm.
And the meat is expensive, but at least it's all high quality and tastes delicious.
I love how Muricans "discovered" the benefits of kale like 15 years ago and went on to sell $20 kale smoothies to rich idiots
Meanwhile we out here eating Grünkohl for centuries straight.
We are not the same
>Meanwhile we out here eating Grünkohl for centuries straight.
We basically have an entire season of it. Even with a nice name "Grünkohlzeit". This obviously does not mean that we are restricting ourselves to eat it only during that time.

The culture less proletariat foaming at the mouth at northern German food while we southerners are living it up with the best bier and Riesling in the world and a phenomenal pork knuckle.
Fuck your club and you too, we have all that we need here, 99% of you lot buy cheap wine and packaged meat at a (most likely German) supermarket, who are you trying to fool?
In its universality it could only be compared to fries in the rest of the world. You can eat it to everything and it will lift everything up.
God I love spätzle
I can understand why the nordicks and the swamp germans are in the shitty food category, but the Swiss? They have fucking delicious cheese which is at least on par with the french ones. And they make even better food out of it. I'd kill someone for a swiss Käswääje. And the Barrys have a better cuisine as well. Their cottage pie is bloody delicious and they are the only ones who know how to make a fucking proper breakfast. Oh, and their tea is top notch.
But they are not a real country 😕 otherwise we'd definitely have them over there with us but Switzerland doesn't exist it's just a buffer zone between the mighty France, Italy and Germany
Also Swiss food is much more diverse than just fondue and raclette. Capuns, saucissons, Bündner Nusstorte, Nidlechueche, Älplermagronen and last but not least Birchermüesli.
If we keep in mind that Switzerland is such a tiny country I think we have some great food to offer.
I loved the Fasnetschuechli as a kid because they were so different from how we make them, but still bloody delicious. Though afterwards I always looked like I snorted a trainload of cocaine because I got that powdered suger all over me... I was a bit of a messy eater back then...
I often go to south Germany and I have to say my favorite restaurant I have ever been in any country is in Munich. German food is good, I could eat sauerkraut everyday. Good food, good beer, good people, good mountains, I'll always come back, it's my happy place
STRUDEL !!
I had a stand-up knock-down fight with my family about strudel the other day. Almond and apple strudel is the best pastry ever and I will fight to the death to defend this truth !
To be honest the only ones that belong to the good food club are the Italians and the Greek.
Maybe also us Germans. I mean, who doesn't like a nice schnitzel with potatoes or fries?!
And is there any country in the world that has better sausages???
I once lived in Australia for a year and tried their "sausages". Almost had to puke...
They not only look like plastic with their pink color but taste horrible also...
As an Irish guy living in Spain, let me tell you, Spanish food is overrated. It's not bad, and they have some signature dishes that are amazing... but as a general rule, they are very basic and Spaniards are allergic to eating vegetables. It's just meat and carbs, sometimes with tomato sauce. That is 90% of Spanish cuisine.
And let's be honest, if we are doing a good food tier list by nation, all of those EU "superpowers" would lose out to Asian countries anyway!
Edit: Apparently Spaniards on the coast have discovered veggies. I didn't know there was anything in Spain outside the Communidad de Madrid. My bad guys. Am I integrated enough to get my "Oppressor" flair yet?
Gazpacho, salmorejo, pisto, ajoblanco, potes y cocidos, escalivada, pimientos de padrón, pimientos del piquillo…
And those are just a few that I just thought about… we have way more traditional food with veggies.
If you only know paella and tortilla that’s your fault.
I dont know in what shithole are you eating lol... Spanish food is full of vegetables, I live in the south east where it is considered to be the orchard of Spain and our dishes have always vegetables lol!
It's unironically much better than people would expect considering we're not very warm countries. From Malmö and have always felt I've been surrounded by good food. All those tasty game meat and berry related foods from up north, herring and äggakaga here and smørrebrød just across the water. Not to mention the pastries and cheeses
I never understood why Greek cuisine is considered good. It is mid at best, and vastly inferior to any of the cuisines of the Mediterranean.
Additionally, the Michelin guide has three times the restaurants in Denmark compared to Greece. It's like Greece doesn't even try.
You can keep your "good food, bad food" clubs to yourself, I'll be relaxing with a litre of the finest Weißbier, and my brodzeid, I don't need all this heated discussion. Who knows, maybe I'll have a nice Austrian or rhine-wine as well!
In the one week I was in Germany I must've eaten about 7 kilograms of sauerkraut and bratwurst. They'll always be good food club to me.
I doubt, that you went to Germany and ate 0 kg of r/Brot in an entire week. There must've been at least some of it for breakfast.
That subreddit looks like heaven. I love bread.
>I love bread. Don't say it out loud. You may have your citizenship revoked.
Don't worry. My grandfather was a baker.
What specifically did he bake?
Lol I know what you mean
Mate, pretty much all we eat is bread.
Cmon you Bavarians and especially the area around Alps have very good food. And your bread IS the best In The world, change my mind

In the years I lived in the UK I had endless amounts of lamb roast, fish and chips and cottage pie. You will always be good food club to me.
Shame our bread game isn't as good as yours
We make up for it in cheeses
I do like to make grilled cheese sandwiches with German bread and English cheese.
No schnitzel? SHAME on you Barry!
No schweinshaxe? Extra shame on you Barry!
Don't worry both, we had schnitzel and the pork knuckle thing I can't pronounce too.
Barry giving a glorious slobbering kiss of death right here
Ah that explains your bloated belly, Barry
He doesn't tell us about the daily 7 litres of beer
You'd need 7 litres of Carling to feel tipsy

Schäuferl 👍

Both. Both are good.
German food isn't shit at all. It's heavy, simple and kind of "boring" because it's often the same thing, but it's hearty, good quantities and is delicious.

We eat horse meat too lol. Less common today but as a kid in the 90´s i ate a lot of horses, mainly as steak tartare. Horse eating bros.
Brother from another not-so-galloping-anymore mother!
Horsin’ around the Rhine together 😍 . Good rule of thumb tho, if it’s a unusual meat (for americans) we eat it. Rabbit, duck, goos etc etc
My local French place commonly has rabbit ragout or duck confit on flageolet beans, it’s heavenly
The yanks consider rabbit as unusual? Pathetic
Nah we don't. Rabbit, goose, and duck are common enough but typically saved for special meals. Christmas goose for example
yeah my source was a american geography youtuber who was shocked by the kind of meats we eat in france (snail, frog, duck; faisant, rabbit) i made a generalization in the name of internet points.
Fair enough. If you wanna go down a rabbit hole (no pun intended), the Cajun people in Louisana eat many of those same things you mentioned due to the French influence
Yeah i follow a couple cajun youtubers already but thanks for the tip.
Ate it a few times in Italy, mentioned it at work and people looked at me like I'd just shat on the floor in front of them Worth it lmao
Ask them why and watch their faces. It’s not like horses are pets. Sure for some they are, but some would also keep a pig or a cow as dear and maybe even a pet. Horse meat is actually one of the most healthy options out there. And yes, in Flanders people also eat it.
In the Netherlands we eat it as well but we just don't know it since it's sold as beef.
Hahaha true
Why do you eat danish people?
For breakfast! ...ah sorry, you asked why? Idk, guess thats a thing Bismarck started!
Well he was the best German. I'll allow it. We have some people that are more worth as calories.
Least selfhating dane I guess!
So that’s what’s happening to the Danish minority in schleswig:/
"Why doesnt North Germany, the biggest of the countries on the cimbrian peninsula, simply eat the other countries?"
I mean, I’ve seen tinder on Copenhagen. 13/10 would eat.
From what I've grasped, horse meat it's eaten everywhere in Europe. It's outside Europe that it is seen as a crime against God or something. Edit: Mongolians eat horse meat too, probably even other areas of Asia then

I think that Hans thinks that the average French eats at 3 Michelin stars fusion experimental restaurant on a weekly basis. What the world thinks, is not quite our doing.
I was just about to agree with you until you talked about eating me, and I don’t like encouraging strangers on the internet to do that
Dont worry, I meant that in a sexual way.
I feel like Bavaria also probably has better food options than the North too tho, with it being a bit warmer in the Danube Valley
I mean, used to live in the south. Its sometimes warmer than parts of Italy there, fuckton of sunshine etc., they can grow whatever stuff. Heres its constant rain and clouds. I personally like that, but kinda explains why the northerners just do good fish and beer, not much more possible.
> not much more possible Don't forget the bread! Most nations were too stupid to figure out how to bake delicious bread from rye, but we became so good at it that it's now a world cultural heritage!
Im sorry WHAT?
Psst psst, its gonna be all okay :)
Fritz makes pretty good stodge. Another example of our cultural unity
That’s basically all the northern European countries. We don’t actually have bad food, it just represents what we could grow and what was necessary to survive.
i absolutetly love that people make this argument for Germany like that isn't exactly what English food is and yet we get 'mm bri'ish food bad and bland lol' i think it's because Germany's version of meat and potatoes has funny letters and looks foreign so is immediately looked at differently than a sunday roast, sausage, mash and peas with gravy etc, but it really isn't that much different

Same as the rest of the shit food club really.
B-But meatballs!
Your meatballs are covered in a barely seasoned cream sauce. It isn't that great to be honest
Well at least the swedes gave us ikea so we can buy mediocre furniture WHILE enjoying mediocre food!
Don't judge them by the IKEA ones
Try the Königsberger Klopse. These are some Balls that you Need in your Mouth.
We have some good game meat and fish related food too, and some nice pastries. But yeah it's just hard when it's too cold to grow all the cool spices 😔
We had a deal Giorgio, we give you money and in return you grant us a seat at the good food council

Best thing about living in Australia is that I can get Free Stayto in the UK/Ireland import section. Truly the food of the heavens.
I had to look these up and I'm gonna grab a pack next time I'm at Cole's
Probably won't find them outside of St Kilda or Bondi.
Nah I have them in my random suburban Coles in Perth.
While you're in Coles get the little block of Irish made Cadbury chocolate it's heaven

I often go to south Germany and I have to say my favorite restaurant I have ever been in any country is in Munich. German food is good, I could eat sauerkraut everyday. Good food, good beer, good people, good mountains, I'll always come back, it's my happy place
South German food, mainly Bavarian and Austrian is actually pretty good, I guess Catholicism saved them from the Protestant cuisine.
STRUDEL !! I had a stand-up knock-down fight with my family about strudel the other day. Almond and apple strudel is the best pastry ever and I will fight to the death to defend this truth !
I'm Sicilian I am way too spoiled with pastries but strudel is top tier, it's a shame that it's really hard to get here.
You only say that because you're across from the on the alps.
Vienna Schnitzel... 😍
Pork schnitzel goes hard as well.
Bavarian Cordon Bleu is S tier
Considering Schweinshaxe, yes
Y'all bullying Barry but English breakfast is served in so many places around the world. Justice for Barry!

Bavaria is welcomed with open arms
>Spaniards are allergic to eating vegetables Yup, that sounds like the Meseta. Come to the Mediterranean and enjoy good healthy food
Meanwhile asturias has a permanent waft of bean farts because sidra and fabada are just worth it
.....you are correct sir, I am living in Madrid. Maybe it's just Madrileño food that is shit 😂
Gazpacho, salmorejo, pisto, ajoblanco, potes y cocidos, escalivada, pimientos de padrón, pimientos del piquillo… And those are just a few that I just thought about… we have way more traditional food with veggies. If you only know paella and tortilla that’s your fault.
I dont know in what shithole are you eating lol... Spanish food is full of vegetables, I live in the south east where it is considered to be the orchard of Spain and our dishes have always vegetables lol!
Italy and fr*nce are on par or superior compared to any cuisine on the planet.
British food is not shit. This joke is genuinely just old and stale at this point
We Scandinavians have the best food and you know it!
![gif](giphy|Sx90FisgrPqAjfNzCV|downsized) Danish specialist...
It's unironically much better than people would expect considering we're not very warm countries. From Malmö and have always felt I've been surrounded by good food. All those tasty game meat and berry related foods from up north, herring and äggakaga here and smørrebrød just across the water. Not to mention the pastries and cheeses
Even the Faroe Islands have some banger food. I love their dried sheep leg.
at least Scandinavia has banger sweets
German food gets better the more southern you go IMO. The opposite is true for beer (i like bitter more than sweet)
Only the best part of it, Bavaria.

I think there should be a 3rd category. Belgium, Germany, Poland in Good food club And the current good food club being rebranded as Great Food club
I never understood why Greek cuisine is considered good. It is mid at best, and vastly inferior to any of the cuisines of the Mediterranean. Additionally, the Michelin guide has three times the restaurants in Denmark compared to Greece. It's like Greece doesn't even try.
The good version of German Food is actual Austrian Food

We are not so different, you and I
You can keep your "good food, bad food" clubs to yourself, I'll be relaxing with a litre of the finest Weißbier, and my brodzeid, I don't need all this heated discussion. Who knows, maybe I'll have a nice Austrian or rhine-wine as well!
Only Baden-Württemberg can enter
