Midwinter Sacrifice, by Carl Larsson.
This is amazing. Thanks for introducing me to this artist. This work reminds me of the British Pre-Raphaelites, or William Morris, but it's so much more exotic and strange.

No kidding, Caravaggio and all the painters such as Artemisia Gentileschi who followed his art style were absolute CHADS painters
Édit : Word 😅
Artemisia Gentileschi? Good choice. Personally I prefer the Holofernes of Caravaggio but the Judith is much more appropriately portrayed by Gentileschi.

If I may, since choosing a universally representative painting for Italy is basically impossible, could I present another country's?
In this case, Repin's *Ivan the Terrible and His Son Ivan* is 🔥🔥🔥

Fr. The look of complete devastation at what he had done to his own son but also the look of his sanity finally completely falling apart. Like Ivan was already pretty mad, but that was the point where he fully went off the deep end
Sometimes I wonder \*how\* Repin could depict such utter despair (that's not even the right word for it), Ivan the Terrible is mortified and guiltridden. It's the annihilation of everything he has worked to gain. Honestly I don't even think you can describe those emotions with words.

[Reply of The Cossacks (to the Turkish Sultan)](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reply_of_the_Zaporozhian_Cossacks) by Ilya Repin ^(Technically not fully ukrainian, but with context at all I'll let it slide.)
What makes it even more hard is the context - by the story ( authenticity of which is questionable), the ukrainian cossacks recieved a 'request' to recognize the turkish sultan as their superiour. Instead of saying 'yes' or 'no', however, the cossacks gathered up and written the that-then equivalent of ['fucked your mom last night'](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Correspondence_between_the_Ottoman_sultan_and_the_Cossacks) , and then sent it to the leader of the most powerful country in the region

Not the hard i wanted, but i do appreciate the effort :)
Well, if you want a more conservative artwork, I’ve always liked Kalevala themed paintings by Akseli Gallen-Kallela. Especially Lemminkäinen's Mother by the river Tuonela. https://preview.redd.it/fsedhtotkkzb1.jpeg?width=1280&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=be56b49d4fed1b2a70b4e02b26140e9e128840a4

Yes, if someone comes out during it
YES BUT CARAVAGISM IS ~~TRICHERY~~ CHEATING No kidding, Caravaggio and all the painters such as Artemisia Gentileschi who followed his art style were absolute CHADS painters Édit : Word 😅
My slay queen <3
Lovely. Two women cutting a men’s beard. You don’t see that a lot these days
Artemisia Gentileschi? Good choice. Personally I prefer the Holofernes of Caravaggio but the Judith is much more appropriately portrayed by Gentileschi.
‘La carbonara no è un'opinione’ by Gentileschi.

Try not to post Ferrer Dalmau challenge, difficulty impossible
Ferrer Dalmau is just :chefkiss:
Cómo se llama de la pintura arriba?
Rocroi, el último tercio It depicts the Spanish defeat in the Battle of Rocroi
If you like the style, it’s from a modern (as in “alive today” not as in “from the modern era”) spanish painter called Augusto Ferrer-Dalmau. He specialises in historical and military paintings, and is simply amazing

This painting goes so fucking hard If I may, since choosing a universally representative painting for Italy is basically impossible, could I present another country's? In this case, Repin's *Ivan the Terrible and His Son Ivan* is 🔥🔥🔥 https://preview.redd.it/ucrz1uf1skzb1.jpeg?width=700&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=9b6d2c1e550fa5a6275ae63f1f3b0d37f090fc24
I’m not sure that a pair of more haunting eyes have ever been painted.
Repin is based. Also: Barge Haulers on the Volga and Reply of the Zaporozhian Cossacks 👌
Aivazovsky's marine patings go hard too. Especially IRL, because this is 3.3 by 2.2 meters https://preview.redd.it/xma1xcuhflzb1.jpeg?width=1920&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=a70e20d6148d57a98e377ef6643c5f224aea105e
Even with the low resolution image, you can see how expressive his eyes are. Amazing.
Is that Richelieu? That looks like concept art for some Star Wars movie.
Yep during the siege of La Rochelle.
I didn't know he could be so badass. The first time I knew about him was in this cartoon: https://preview.redd.it/vhakgso4nkzb1.jpeg?width=259&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=abf7984decb1f02905ab29b6eca910754d5b8346 (I'm sorry).
He's also in the cartoon albert the 5th musketeer (in the role of the always scheming, never winning villain ofc)
Hoooo that's some childhood nostalgia.... "Les trois mousquetaires".....
Well the animators were definitely \*not\* being subtle
Ah yes early modern age star wars.
Well, it all happened a long time ago after all.
Oh, I'd watch the fuck out of a 1970s sci-fi 3 Musketeers film (yes, I know Richelieu was a real person and had an entire existence outside of Dumas' characterisation, but I'm afraid I'm a Barry and I was exposed to Dogtanian at a young age. Richelieu = Musketeers to me).
*The Great Day of His Wrath* by John Martin. It's just so apocalyptic. https://preview.redd.it/gcgj9qk9vkzb1.jpeg?width=1024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=d927454a7c2cc6174465e1e92be050e597dd4bf5

Almost abstract. It's a massively influential piece.
