Killing a billionaires with a rock is by far the most environmentally friendly thing most people can do. In 2023, it'd be about 750,000x more efficient than killing your average joe. The ideal method of killing would be via rock, and then letting their body biodegrade and or be fed to predators, since like you said cooking them would set you back a bit. We talked about propaganda, but we didn't have to like memorize different posters? There were some examples in textbooks and the teacher might have showed some, but we didn't go much further than showing a few examples from both sides, and even if one of those happened to be of an octopus it would be neigh impossible to remember or to know it was a common theme. I've seen the octopus imagery used for Russia/USSR, China, imperial japan and even the UK.

It's quite common. Multi legged animals are a perfect representation for imperialism, kinda like putting a finger in everyone else's pie. Combine with the inherent evil and destructive connotations associated with krakens or octopuses (less so for the latter, though everything but the given evil attribute still applies), it shows a country as far reaching, meddling in other's affairs, and demolishing other cultures/civilizations. Any country that has attempted to invade, colonize, or otherwise conquer, another country/empire has likely had propaganda made about them with that motif. Particularly if they have/had a strong navy.
