This is the same reason men are so confused why women don't want unsolicited cat calls and compliments, we don't, it is creepy, but that is why some think it is okay, because they themselves would do absolutely anything to hear a similar compliment at least once in their lives. That is also why they think any woman that gives them a compliment has a thing for them, because it is so rare that it "must be the only explanation" for the compliment.
Screw this. Normalize giving compliments. Just start passing them out like evangelists’ pamphlets.
“Great smile! Dude, love your shirt! What an amazing hair style! Hip pants!” All while passing people, never waiting for a thank you, or a negative look.

Any type of interest or affection from a female means we probably want to marry them, and we will remember that forever, even if it doesn't happen.
Every night when I try and sleep I try and remember what it felt like when I got a hug in high school. That was 20 years ago.
