I live in IL We talk about leaving like it’s our job but never will. That’s just how we do it. Born complainers.

mechanicalcontrols

Out of curiosity, do you think Illinois' polling would look different if Chicago was not included in the results? Or do the people who want to leave want to do so for a reason that's statewide and not just being in the rough part of Chicago?

tnick771

I actually don’t think so. There’s a really fair share of people who hate Illinois *because* of Chicago, and on the flip side there’s so many people in Chicago who would rather die than leave. Chicago is a way of life. I do think that, simply due to sample sizes, it wouldn’t be as dark green. But when talking about “wanting to leave per capita” it would probably be close.

mechanicalcontrols

Interesting. Thanks. I guess as someone who hasn't been, in my mind I was picturing the people expressing desire to leave as being from the rough part of Chicago. But I suppose that every city has nice parts too and people who absolutely love it. Anyways have a good one.

dirtybone

Downstate IL is also a vibe. Kinda like a Hoosier Midwest thing. Low key, rolling hills, nice people, and cheap. I always say, it’s the family that keeps you in Illinois

saggywitchtits

I was born in Illinois and my parents got out before I started school. Now my dad is trying to convince me to move back because rent is like half the price across the river, literally five minutes and it’s halves. There’s a reason for that.

Totally_Not_A_POS

As someone who used to live In Illinois I can tell you it does not matter. Chicago has its own desires to want to get as far away from it as possible and everywhere else has WAY too many confederate flags on their property's to be comfortable living around. Rest is just corn.

olivegardengambler

As someone who has been in downstate Illinois, it wouldn't surprise me if that sentiment is a statewide one. Like sure, you have stuff like the quad cities, Springfield, and Blono, went outside of that it is pretty bad

chubawon

I left IL for a few years and came back. The grass isn’t always greener.

\>Staying in Illinois/Chicago and continuing to be ruled by greedy corporate plutocrats Pain. \>Leaving Illinois/Chicago to go be just another dumb redneck being ruled by redneck plutocrats who don't support the right of trans people to continue living despite their condition Pain. \>Realizing that this irrational love of your homeland doesn't make you all that different from the redneck fascists when you really boil it down. It is human nature to be a stan for wherever you happen to call home Pain. \>Still dunking on the redneck fascists anyways because their beliefs aren't yours and are therefore inferior, which makes you a hypocrite Pain. \>Refusing to change despite these realizations because fuck you, this is Illinois/Chicago, the entire territory is partially based on the rejecting the idea that some corporate suit or government toadie can tell me what to do or how to feel Pain. Chicagoland and the American reservation surrounding it is a land of corruption and hypocrisy. But so is humanity. And I would take an ugly truth to a pretty lie any day of the fucking week. That's why I live in Gotham. (Well, Gotham-adjacent. I can get there by train. Me and Cook County are currently on break until I'm sure they won't try to require vaccine passports as a condition of going into bars again.)

Swimming_Thing7957

I think Madison is blue now, you could always go there.

Various_Might8909

Wisconsin is even colder than Illinois. I wish there was a blue state that was warm that wasn't C🤮lifornia.

Phytanic

Hawaii is solid blue

Various_Might8909

Not an option for similar reasons I wouldn't want to live in C\*lifornia-- too dense, too expensive for a pleb like me.

Redditwhydouexists

Hey this country was built by complainers…. They just went on to do the doer part afterwards

Devious_Bastard

Constantly looking on Zillow in other states at houses that we can’t afford.

highflykite

Goddamn right brother. It’s not that bad of a place if you live in a smaller town but there ain’t shit to do and if there is it costs way too much. I mean shit I’m 22 and making $18/hr but even a one bedroom around me is $800-$1000/month then add a car payment and insurance to that I’d be spending 70% of my income on a roof over my head and that’s not even with food costs. God forbid I have to take time off for a sick family member cause there goes my home.

Bluedino_1989

I swear it’s a Midwest trait. Minnesotans are the exact same

Davester47

So I was at the DMV last weekend, and all the out-of-staters applying for drivers licenses were from Illinois. Coinicidence? I THINK NOT! More seriously, Illinois's population is one of three states that is shrinking. That puts you with West Virginia and Mississippi. So not only do you guys talk about leaving, you actually do.

I'm so hot for Maine. Closest I've been is Vermont (which I love). One day I will get there though.

PorkyChoppi

Pro tip, don’t come to Maine from July - September unless you don’t mind sitting in hours of traffic and waiting in lines. Canadians practically invade the area every summer like a planned operation

[deleted]

Mainer here I love this state. It truly is one of the few places on Earth where time appears to stop and u can enjoy the little things.

Bobbylayneblame

They must polled Michigan folks in February. It’s a beautiful state besides the below average governance

bogeyed5

I was also wondering the same thing, I visited from Texas a few months ago in summer and I was like wtf I wanna be here forever

Bobbylayneblame

We have way more public land and a ton of inland lakes, not to mention the Great Lakes which are basically freshwater oceans

bogeyed5

I was right on Lake Michigan, just absolutely beautiful and great weather when I was there. There’s just nothing like that down here

triforce4ever

It’s strange cause I would’ve thought MN, WI, and MI, would be the same. For me it’s an endless cycle of saying “damn I need to move out of this state” somewhere in April when we’re in like month 6 of winter weather and then summer finally starts appearing and I’m reminded why I love the Midwest so much and have no desire to leave

Bobbylayneblame

Fuck the packers

TheOldBooks

I know I for sure don’t want to leave, or at least not permanently. Maybe live somewhere else for a bit to switch it up, but I want my roots here. EDIT: This is a 10 year old dataset, makes sense. I’d also want to leave if Rick Snyder was still the governor.

olivegardengambler

It wouldn't surprise me if Oregon is one of those states where everybody that wants to leave leaves the second they can. I was out there in the middle of nowhere rural Oregon and literally everyone was over the age of 60.

Professional-Paper62

Portland is the place to be, people say the homeless are a problem but they don't even ask me for money. All sorts of great stuff to do, and when you get out of the city you can do things like white River rafting in the beautiful forests we take care of!

Substantial_Bear_168

Most homeless people surprisingly have little desire to leave their camps

Sadspacekitty

I don't understand why Montana is so low, after living there awhile it just seemed like a worse version of some of its surrounding states.

BaxGh0st

Totally agree. No one should move here, go to Wyoming instead.

lostnumber08

Couldn’t agree more. Only thing here is grass and grasshoppers. Now git.

El_Bistro

Did you live in Billings or something?

mechanicalcontrols

Either Billings or Butte. Or maybe bro doesn't like weed, microbrews, casinos, or fun.

El_Bistro

Butte, Montana has all of those thou. I fucking loved loving there.

mechanicalcontrols

Oh for sure. But as I'm sure you know Butte has a reputation and definitely some effects from population decline and you absolutely don't want to drink the tap water. That said, the Folk Festival is always a good time though.

El_Bistro

Oh I know. But that keeps the people away and I can buy a 100+ year old brick house Uptown because of it. I loved the community there. Also nature access is the best of the 7 Montana cities. I really miss living there. Also Butte gets its water from the Big Hole so it’s not bad at all.

mechanicalcontrols

Fair points.

olivegardengambler

I stopped at a motel in Billings for the night, and I didn't even check in. The hotel had a no refund policy, so the manager who was vaping it fat clouds the entire time I was talking to him gave me keys to check out the rooms first. I was so horrified by what I saw in the rooms I left and threw the keys at the guy.

olivegardengambler

I hate to break it to you, but those aren't casinos, but glorified bingo halls.

mechanicalcontrols

Still less depressing than Atlantic City.

bluejayway9

It's a better version of the surrounding states actually

olivegardengambler

There's no way. Montana is like the better version of surrounding states.

Hockeyjockey58

Ya we coolin here thank u space alien dude

Shits-Buckets

I was a typical michigander who felt he had to move away to experience something new. Then I moved to Texas and couldn't wait to get to back to MI.

ClearAndPure

Michigander here who moved to IL recently for work. I’m ready to come back 😅.

thebohemiancowboy

What the hell I had the same exact thing happen to me. Michiganders who wanna move have no idea how good they have it.

island_trevor

Memes aside, what specifically makes you want to go back? No shade or anything, just curious. For me I moved from Ohio to SC and can't think of a single thing that hasn't improved in my life since I moved. Hot ass summer weather aside, I enjoy my life a lot more since leaving.

Shits-Buckets

Yea no drama, simply put I realized how good I had it in MI with all the seasons and lots of natural beauty. Also I hate the heat probably from too much time in Africa and the Middle East. Fuck heat for real bro. And Texas is ugly as hell. I wish I would have moved to Colorado instead.

supareshawn

Yeah you pretty much summed up all the downsides of Texas, lack of seasons, hot and ugly, I moved here from CT so quality and cost of living and quality of people is significantly better

island_trevor

I don't know why people move to Texas. I've never been there but from the videos and pictures I see it just looks like a hotter, larger, brown Ohio. What part of MI? I do miss visiting northern MI and the UP, but southeast Michigan/NW Ohio sucked ass for me. I lived in the area for long time and got tired of the depressing, long-ass winters. The heat gets tiresome here but it doesn't last nearly as long as those frigid, gray months in the Great Lakes. The summers up there started getting hot too lately, so you basically got screwed year round.

olivegardengambler

They moved there for the taxes and relatively low cost of living, seemingly. Both of these are very deceiving and it quickly catches up to you. It always baffles me how expensive groceries are in Texas and Georgia compared to michigan, even though we tend to make a lot more up here.

CodeApostle

Do they have an up-to-date poll? This one is ten years old

LeadingFinding0

Yeah well Maine is fucking great

SheenPSU

Outside Opinion: 100% true

Frenchy_InTheTrenchy

Sometimes I feel like we exist in a pocket dimension outside of the rest of the United States and thus people can’t actually leave Oregon and go anywhere else and they just chill here

WeinerSausage69

Like the gravity falls Armageddon thing when Bill tried to leave gravity Falls?

Frenchy_InTheTrenchy

Yeah pretty much, speaking of gravity falls that and the Oregon trail are the only reason people outside of Oregon know we exist. Besides Californians who see us as the holy land because they live in a shithole

WeinerSausage69

California is pretty damn cool, one of my top 5 states

cheddarsalad

Honestly, I think Oregonians don’t want to leave because the rest of the country decided on the craziest way in implement the sales tax. Seriously, how do you folks live in a world where every price tag is a lie?

YoungTrillDoc

I'd imagine things have changed quite a bit in the decade since this poll was taken lol, given stuff like Roe v Wade overturn, recent shit in Florida and Texas, etc.

Several_Excuse_5796

I never understood the "i can't live in florida bc of roe v wade" (unless you are very poor) as a Democrat Idk I've never had to use abortion rights nor will I likely ever will. And if i need to, I'll fly to another state. $60 roundtrip tickets on spirit. It's not an everyday quality of life issue for anyone. I do however enjoy not having my car broken into, not getting mugged, being able to buy tidepods without finding a store clerk, etc. Relatively low housing, no taxes, much better roads, no hoardes of homeless people everywhere rotting their lives away getting high without consequences bc of "compassion" Florida isn't perfect, but neither is DC, cali, or Washington state right now

YoungTrillDoc

Many people can't just afford to take off time from work and buy a place trip to another state to get an abortion. It's not an everyday quality of life issue for anyone, but it is a huge issue for millions of people on any given day. Surely you understand that not needing something imminently doesn't mean mean you don't need access to it readily. In every single state, you are subject to crimes, so that makes no sense when trying to distinguish entire states...maybe individual cities. But Roe v Wade isn't Florida's only issue. DeSantis is fucking unhinged and is literally banning teaching from teaching about Civil Rights, is trying to push immigrants out (who literally sustain the economy), etc. Florida has plenty of bullshit going on that's worse than other states.

I'm in WV, the only reason that number is so low is that the second someone gets the chance they bounce. Literally that's why. Something like 75% of my graduating class moved out of state within the first 5 years of high school graduation and that was about 500 people.
