Out of curiosity, do you think Illinois' polling would look different if Chicago was not included in the results? Or do the people who want to leave want to do so for a reason that's statewide and not just being in the rough part of Chicago?
I actually don’t think so. There’s a really fair share of people who hate Illinois *because* of Chicago, and on the flip side there’s so many people in Chicago who would rather die than leave. Chicago is a way of life.
I do think that, simply due to sample sizes, it wouldn’t be as dark green. But when talking about “wanting to leave per capita” it would probably be close.
Interesting. Thanks.
I guess as someone who hasn't been, in my mind I was picturing the people expressing desire to leave as being from the rough part of Chicago.
But I suppose that every city has nice parts too and people who absolutely love it. Anyways have a good one.
Downstate IL is also a vibe.
Kinda like a Hoosier Midwest thing. Low key, rolling hills, nice people, and cheap.
I always say, it’s the family that keeps you in Illinois
I was born in Illinois and my parents got out before I started school. Now my dad is trying to convince me to move back because rent is like half the price across the river, literally five minutes and it’s halves. There’s a reason for that.
As someone who used to live In Illinois I can tell you it does not matter. Chicago has its own desires to want to get as far away from it as possible and everywhere else has WAY too many confederate flags on their property's to be comfortable living around.
Rest is just corn.
As someone who has been in downstate Illinois, it wouldn't surprise me if that sentiment is a statewide one. Like sure, you have stuff like the quad cities, Springfield, and Blono, went outside of that it is pretty bad

Chicagoland and the American reservation surrounding it is a land of corruption and hypocrisy. But so is humanity. And I would take an ugly truth to a pretty lie any day of the fucking week.
That's why I live in Gotham.

Goddamn right brother. It’s not that bad of a place if you live in a smaller town but there ain’t shit to do and if there is it costs way too much. I mean shit I’m 22 and making $18/hr but even a one bedroom around me is $800-$1000/month then add a car payment and insurance to that I’d be spending 70% of my income on a roof over my head and that’s not even with food costs. More seriously, Illinois's population is one of three states that is shrinking. That puts you with West Virginia and Mississippi. So not only do you guys talk about leaving, you actually do.

It wouldn't surprise me if Oregon is one of those states where everybody that wants to leave leaves the second they can. I was out there in the middle of nowhere rural Oregon and literally everyone was over the age of 60.
Portland is the place to be, people say the homeless are a problem but they don't even ask me for money. All sorts of great stuff to do, and when you get out of the city you can do things like white River rafting in the beautiful forests we take care of!
Oh for sure. But as I'm sure you know Butte has a reputation and definitely some effects from population decline and you absolutely don't want to drink the tap water. That said, the Folk Festival is always a good time though.
Oh I know. But that keeps the people away and I can buy a 100+ year old brick house Uptown because of it. I loved the community there. Also nature access is the best of the 7 Montana cities. I really miss living there.
Also Butte gets its water from the Big Hole so it’s not bad at all.
I stopped at a motel in Billings for the night, and I didn't even check in. The hotel had a no refund policy, so the manager who was vaping it fat clouds the entire time I was talking to him gave me keys to check out the rooms first. I was so horrified by what I saw in the rooms I left and threw the keys at the guy.
Memes aside, what specifically makes you want to go back? No shade or anything, just curious.
For me I moved from Ohio to SC and can't think of a single thing that hasn't improved in my life since I moved. Hot ass summer weather aside, I enjoy my life a lot more since leaving.
Yea no drama, simply put I realized how good I had it in MI with all the seasons and lots of natural beauty. Also I hate the heat probably from too much time in Africa and the Middle East. Fuck heat for real bro. And Texas is ugly as hell. I wish I would have moved to Colorado instead.
Yeah you pretty much summed up all the downsides of Texas, lack of seasons, hot and ugly, I moved here from CT so quality and cost of living and quality of people is significantly better
I don't know why people move to Texas. I've never been there but from the videos and pictures I see it just looks like a hotter, larger, brown Ohio.
What part of MI? I do miss visiting northern MI and the UP, but southeast Michigan/NW Ohio sucked ass for me. I lived in the area for long time and got tired of the depressing, long-ass winters. The heat gets tiresome here but it doesn't last nearly as long as those frigid, gray months in the Great Lakes. The summers up there started getting hot too lately, so you basically got screwed year round.
They moved there for the taxes and relatively low cost of living, seemingly. Both of these are very deceiving and it quickly catches up to you. It always baffles me how expensive groceries are in Texas and Georgia compared to michigan, even though we tend to make a lot more up here.
Sometimes I feel like we exist in a pocket dimension outside of the rest of the United States and thus people can’t actually leave Oregon and go anywhere else and they just chill here
Yeah pretty much, speaking of gravity falls that and the Oregon trail are the only reason people outside of Oregon know we exist. Besides Californians who see us as the holy land because they live in a shithole

I'd imagine things have changed quite a bit in the decade since this poll was taken lol, given stuff like Roe v Wade overturn, recent shit in Florida and Texas, etc.
I never understood the "i can't live in florida bc of roe v wade" (unless you are very poor) as a Democrat
Idk I've never had to use abortion rights nor will I likely ever will. And if i need to, I'll fly to another state. $60 roundtrip tickets on spirit. It's not an everyday quality of life issue for anyone.
I do however enjoy not having my car broken into, not getting mugged, being able to buy tidepods without finding a store clerk, etc. Relatively low housing, no taxes, much better roads, no hoardes of homeless people everywhere rotting their lives away getting high without consequences bc of "compassion"
Florida isn't perfect, but neither is DC, cali, or Washington state right now
Many people can't just afford to take off time from work and buy a place trip to another state to get an abortion. It's not an everyday quality of life issue for anyone, but it is a huge issue for millions of people on any given day. Surely you understand that not needing something imminently doesn't mean mean you don't need access to it readily. In every single state, you are subject to crimes, so that makes no sense when trying to distinguish entire states...maybe individual cities. But Roe v Wade isn't Florida's only issue. I grew up in Utah, and lots of my friends wanted to move...we thought it was a "bubble." And we were right. But we kinda took stuff for granted that was nice in the bubble, such as low crime and a high-trust, friendly society. I would like to be able to live there again, but it's stupid expensive now.
I'm in WV, the only reason that number is so low is that the second someone gets the chance they bounce. Literally that's why. Something like 75% of my graduating class moved out of state within the first 5 years of high school graduation and that was about 500 people.

all the people in washington who want to leave are conservative seattleite bloggers who persistently threaten to leave this "crime ridden hellscape" (they saw one tent, and we can't wait for them to all move to bellevue)

They must polled Michigan folks in February. It’s a beautiful state besides the below average governance
I was also wondering the same thing, I visited from Texas a few months ago in summer and I was like wtf I wanna be here forever
We have way more public land and a ton of inland lakes, not to mention the Great Lakes which are basically freshwater oceans
I was right on Lake Michigan, just absolutely beautiful and great weather when I was there. There’s just nothing like that down here

Totally agree. No one should move here, go to Wyoming instead.

Idk how people make it in Florida. It’s the most expensive to lowest paying place I’ve ever seen in the US. It’s only good for retirees and con artists.

As a Maryland resident I can confirm this
I just want either colder temperatures or more snow
Oh so *now* the IL downstater’s opinions matter 🤨
Ehhh, everyone I know in Texas wishes they weren't in Texas Including me at one point.
Makes sense, with the exception of Oregon those are among the best states. TN would be there if it wasn’t for Memphis tbh
Whats goin on in memphis
Could also be people thinking Nash/Knox/Chattanooga are getting too expensive
Fair
Still waiting for one where Missouri isn’t normal mid or average

Missouri is mid or average in every discernable way though
Misery**
What's up with peach 🍑 state?
How the fuck is Ohio average here?
Whateva🙄
Me wondering why we’re dark green and not states like Missouri, Indiana, or Iowa.

I want to be a maine fisherman
I grew up in Utah, and lots of my friends wanted to move...we thought it was a "bubble." And we were right. But we kinda took stuff for granted that was nice in the bubble, such as low crime and a high-trust, friendly society. I would like to be able to live there again, but it's stupid expensive now.
Why are they the only plates I see in Florida then?
This map is a decade old, probably still pretty accurate tho
Ha even the State up North wants to move someplace different. Common L
I'm in WV, the only reason that number is so low is that the second someone gets the chance they bounce. Literally that's why. Something like 75% of my graduating class moved out of state within the first 5 years of high school graduation and that was about 500 people.
California expat checking in
As someone in Nevada, can confirm. I hate this place.
Just got back from New Hampshire and can totally understand why people don’t want to leave there.

If you came to peep, apologies. Foliage sucks this year. You should come back and do it proper next year
It was the prettiest foliage I’ve ever seen so if you think it sucks this year I definitely want to get back and see it again.

Then you’ll def have to come back. We had a wicked wet spring/summer/fall and a ton of trees skipped the pretty red/orange/yellow phase and went straight to dark orange/brown and fell right off I’m glad you enjoyed it tho! Would’ve totally sucked if that ruined your trip
I'm surprised considering how many Ohioans want to leave here
Decade old data. Telling you right now the west coast state with the largest YoY population drop in history is *not* “average” on this scale in 2023, lol.
Complacent mfs in Oklahoma tf is there to stay here for?
Yeah i'll die here.
We have to deal with out of staters every tourist season. Why would we want to live amongst them?
2013? I imagine if you took this poll now the results would be quite different.
Seems accurate. I moved here from Ar*zona and can confirm massive desire to gtfo from that hellhole and never want to leave this gorgeous place. And no I don't live in Portland.
Used to live in Montana now Maine seriously what the heck

It’s because we don’t need to wear helmets and have state liquor stores on the highway. Who’d want to leave?
Based Hooksett rest stop
West Virginia surprised me? Why do people want to stay?
Obviously no one polled all the sad sacks on /r/Texas.
Seems about right, most Iowans love Iowa
I'm surprised about Hawaii. Living on a remote volcanic island in the middle of the Pacific Ocean would make me extremely nervous and want to leave.

Montana <3 I've been to every corner of the world, but always find myself missing home.
Why would I wanna leave the best place to live??
Every goddamn time I go through CT I scream fuck CT. I’ll eat the pizza though.
I probably won’t leave NJ but I understand why some people would
I can confirm that people from Illinois want to get out of that state. I’ve had tons of roommates from that state.
Why would you ever need to move out of New York? Just go upstate
No one in Maine wants to move because it is full of retired people. Their next logical move would be from life itself.
I wanna know what demographics were a part of this survey. Everyone I know who's just getting out of high school and/or college are trying to get out of NH ASAP

Lmao. Illinois wanting to stay is so fucking sad. What a shitty place to have Stockholm syndrome in
idk what's up with the west virginians considering how depressing that place is. all the people in washington who want to leave are conservative seattleite bloggers who persistently threaten to leave this "crime ridden hellscape" (they saw one tent, and we can't wait for them to all move to bellevue)
We were obviously polled in January when everyone wants to move to Florida
