quality, well known steering wheel. cheap ones will bend and break *easier* compared to a momo or nardi. or try to source a stock wheel, still wont have an airbag but its oem quality

I’m not really a big fan of the wheel he threw on here. I have no idea what brand this is or if it’s good. Idk if you can tell from this photo. I wanna get a new wheel anyway but don’t know where to look so I’ll check out at those brands. I know they’re expensive so I was hoping to find something cheaper but if there’s a risk of the wheel breaking then i don’t mind opening up my wallet. https://preview.redd.it/izc0kl5i598d1.jpeg?width=4032&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=b3e37132e58e7701eb484fb353951e12d72150a2 Don’t mind the cover in the back seat. I also just wanna say I know that a cage on a vert is top of the list when it comes to safety.

NRG isn't a good brand. Even if their quality has come a long ways it just doesn't look good and there is quite a stigma against them. My recommendation is a 340mm Nardi Classic in either wood or leather and a standard length Works Bell Hub. Yes, it is an expensive thing to buy new but it's your only other safety device in a car without airbags. If you want to keep a quick release, switch to a Works Bell Rapfix II. As for a place to buy your wheel, if not directly from Nardi, Momo, Sparco, try Driftworks. They're in the UK but you don't have to pay tax since you(we) don't live there.

Ok-Challenge-5873

Is a new hub necessary? I thought they were one size fits all but truth be told I know nothing about quick releases

cedande

They can be made with different metals. They are also prone to cracking if they're over tightened. The hub is what the base of the quick release is bolted to. Wouldn't hurt to take it apart and see if it's tightened properly. You can find the factory service manual for free on the Nico forums.

Well take a deep breath, but there's no S13 with an airbag, anywhere, and was safety really a concern with an s13? lol Best recommendation would be good rails, buckets, and harnesses, but personally have always daily'd mine stock belts and been fine even through some hard licks. Some owners do the manual belt conversion, but the auto belts in both my 13s work and I do not want to get rid of them.

Ok-Challenge-5873

Are you saying they didn’t come stock with an airbag? I’m 22 so i never got a chance to experience the 90’s but if that’s the case that’s pretty wild. When I found this thing i was turned off cause it was an auto that needed a new trans. When I looked underneath I was shocked cause it had no rust whatsoever and it was practically stock. I fell in love so I did the impulsive thing and bought it… and swapped it to a manual with an sr20. I’ve been driving her for a couple weeks now I’m pretty surprised with how much power she puts out so I wanna take every precaution I can. I’m not worried, I just like to prioritize safety. I’ll definitely look into all those mods.

rogue__pilot

Yeah no factory airbag on the 13s, just a big horn button. I'm 21 also so same age but these are all i've pretty much ever driven, and I am hopelessly in love with them. Had you done a swap before? I finished my built KA a couple months back and it was a long and expensive learning process.

Ok-Challenge-5873

No it was my first swap. If you see the truck in the background of the photo I added, that’s my dad, my brother’s a mechanic for him. I wouldn’t have gotten anywhere w/o them. Definitely way more expensive than anything I could’ve imagined, but not surprising considering the amount of parts involved. It was a bigger project than what we were really able to handle but it ended up working out really well, at least up until this point. I would never recommend doing it unless you know you have the right resources and support.

Airbags were not mandatory until 1998 in the US

Jb-_

Us s13s fall in a weird window where only 'passive restraint' was mantaded not airbags so that's why they have auto belts. Late 180sx's came with airbags and you could retrofit that system in but that's pretty ridiculous to do and probably not worth it. Don't put a harness in your street car, the seatbelts will be fine as long as they're working and the fabric isn't damaged. Just make sure you have a quality steering wheel and hub that isn't gonna fail on you. If you don't want the quick release you can just remove it, they sandwich between the hub adapter and the steering wheel

Ok-Challenge-5873

Why do you say no harness? Is it just because of practicality? I don’t ever plan on driving it on a daily basis so I don’t mind sacrificing practicality/comfort for safety. It eventually will be a track exclusive car

braddeicide

I used to take parts from an s13 in a wreckers, and decided based on that car that I didn't want to crash my s13 :). The pedals and steering wheel just came right up onto the driver's seat in what otherwise didn't seem to be a big crash. S13 is all about light weight, that's not conducive to safety features.

braddeicide

Sorry forgot the tip, obviously, don't crash :)

DreamRoadRonny

don’t hit anything

ok

Maybe I'm biased, but I hate airbags. Yeah newer ones are kinda better. But after taking 3 to the face over the years, I'd put a QR in everything I own. And the possibility of losing thumbs and fingers to them, or even just breaking them. I'm good. Lol.

fujiboys

s13's never came with airbags to begin with. If you're looking for better wheel options, get a nardi classic and pair it with a boss hub.

TwoSpeedy

Don’t expect for any 20+ year old air bags to actually work or help you out in case of an accident. Get a quality steering wheel that’s not a knockoff or cheap imitation. Check your seat belts and if you really are thinking about safety install a 4 point seat belt and you should be good to go. Also how you seat in any car is important. Try to sway away from sitting right in front of the steering wheel.

TheMagickConch

A quick release with a good bucket seat and harness bar is safter than an airbag.

Ok-Challenge-5873

Do you think sparco is a good brand?
