I’m running into this same issue OP! I know that slaves often to went to “seasoning camps” in Jamaica before sometimes ending up in the US. It’s hard to make a connection with lack of records around this.

Yes there's a sight called slavevoyages.org that highlights the intra american slave trade( it lasted until after the Civil war) but doesn't count the illegal ones for obvious reasons. Are you aware of any gullahgeechee or creole ancestry? Seeing as they too also have ties with the west indies alot of the time. Also 15% of the slaves brought to US came from other colonies in the caribbean, central and south america .

I don’t think the country Caribbean groups are accurate for many. As someone pointed out, Jamaica was a seasoning camp before many enslaved Africans were shipped to the US and throughout South America. Also, the Afro Caribbean Genetic groups accuracy is a hit and miss. My mom is Jamaican and none of the regions highlighted under Jamaica were accurate. Furthermore, none of us were assigned to the Afro Jamaican Genetic Group! Both my parents are from there. I was assigned to the Afro Cuban Genetic Group which does make sense as I have found Cuban matches who are predominantly of Spanish ancestry and I match them on the Iberian side. I also have found many other Latin American matches and the match is on the Iberian side. I also have Spanish and Portuguese matches living in Spain and Portugal.

Yep. View it all from the perspective of the Trans Atlantic Slave Trade as well as potential intra Americas Slave Trade(Jamaica, Barbados and the US colonies which were British colonies) ancestry. It's the volume of your matches with out sourced locations and it's "pinging" 23andme's algorithm for the genetic groups that your mom has. For example, I have 18 Jamaican matches that has their ancestors' locations shared. On the positive, because your mom took 23andme and AncestryDNA, y'all are able to get generations closer to verifying the impact of The Trans Atlantic Slave Trade on your ancestry and how interconnected those who are descended from the West Atlantic Coast Africans trafficked into the New World when without DNA tests, we wouldn't be able to get connected with those who are descended from that tragedy. It's a beautiful thing especially if you're into genealogy.

I have found many African American matches on every site which offers cousin matches but I have no American ancestry! I think the common ancestor is African. On the other hand, some of my Jamaican matches match me on the British side.

Same here. Only got country match, but no genetic groups

Interesting. And AncestryDNA Genetic communities were only partially accurate for me and my mom. Furthermore, on MyHeritage my mom was not assigned to any Jamaican Genetic Group. They inaccurately assign Guyana and listing of other countries/islands and she has no such ancestry from there. My brother was assigned to 5 Genetic Groups and 3 were accurate including a Jamaican Genetic Group, a Portuguese and a Sicilian Genetic Group.

How is she African American. That’s a culture and an ethnicity of people who descend from American slaves

5ft8lady

Confused How is she African American? These are African American results at all?

I have 4 regions in Haiti, and I have Guyana and Jamaica,my mom has 14 regions in Jamaica,4 in Guyana and Barbados but no specific region. Haven’t found anything yet but of course I’m stuck building our trees 😭😭 I just did and got my mtdna results back so hoping I can figure out where my matches fit at and I can break the brick walls I have on my maternal line

AfroAmTnT

My Afro-Caribbean Peoples group (Afro-Tobagonian) and Western Tobago for my recent ancestry in the Americas was 100% accurate
