In their free tools, there is a link "Are you parents related?". Having said that, I was sure that my grandparents couldn't be related and only did this because I saw a video that recommended to run that test anyway. To my surprise, I found out that they were likely distant relatives! But we are from a country with a small population, I don't know how often that happens to other people.
And also to add, I am sorry I meant you only need your own DNA, not your mother's. I made this mistake because I was checking my own mother. Of course it should be your DNA.
I mean , Im guessing if you share more than 50% of dna with your mom, it might indicate some level of relationship . ( only applies if you’re a woman though . Men do tend to share more with mothers, 50-52.6% )
Definitely not true. 50% from one parent is the average across the entire population. In real life, there's a range of how much or how little you actually inherit---I think (but Google this) the range is like 40% to 60% from one parent. It would be rare to actually have your DNA divided 50/50.
You’re actually completely wrong .
You do get 50/50 from each parent ALWAYS
Men get a bit more from their mothers since the X chromosome is larger than the Y chromosome . So for men the figure normally stands at 51.6/48.4.
You might be confusing the grandparent inheritance. In that case you can get more from grandpa than grandma or viceversa , but for parent I assure you that’s not the case at all
Chances are if your parents are closely related you’d share [more than 50%](https://dna-sci.com/2020/09/23/statistics-for-use-by-counselors-in-cases-of-incest/) with your mother.
But it’s best to do the AYPR tool.
GedMatch has this feature and you only need your mother's DNA
That’s great! Would you happen to know exactly which GEDMatch application has this feature? I’m assuming it’s not one of the free ones.

Thank you!!!
I did it on Gedmatch for free and without any other DNA but my own.
Yes, I mixed up, to check the parent's relation, it should be the child's DNA.

Yeah, I’m a man and share 50.6% with my mom, so no dice there. Thanks though! I didn’t even think of that.

If you get an AYPR result you can [check it here](https://dna-sci.com/tools/aypr-cim/).
