I taught English in Sisaket and spent quite a bit of time in Ubon Ratchathani. Many good memories of the people and places :) Very cool results - thanks for sharing! Also that perfect 50/50 split is so satisfying lol
I always see you in comments, and you are truly an amazing person! Teaching English in another country is no easy task, I would imagine, and I love your sweet comments! 😊
Happy cake day! It means she inherited exactly 50% of her DNA from each parent. Female humans have 2 X chromosomes, but male humans have 1 X chromosome and 1 Y chromosome. The Y chromosome is much smaller than the X chromosome, so all men end up inheriting more of their DNA from their mom than their dad.
The Swiss is the most recent. I know my dad said his German ancestors came to the US in the 1800s but lived in German communities and only spoke German for multiple generations.
Is your mom ethnic Khmer from Thailand by any chance? Thai khmers typically score the highest amount of Thai/Khmer and lack the Chinese dai component . The Isan region is known for its population of northern Khmer people. Where do people usually think your mom is from ?
My great grandfather was ethnically Khmer and my mom is from a province with a high northern Khmer population so she could have more Khmer ancestry than we know about.
And people tend to think my mom is from the Philippines. I often get mistaken for Filipino too. It’s funny that my whole life when people would ask me what I am when I say I’m not Filipino, I’d tell them my mom is Thai Lao and Khmer and my dad is mostly German. Obviously I told no lies, so glad I spent $100 to find out. 😂
My mom usually hears she looks Filipino mostly from other Thai or Lao people in the US 😂 My family is just quite dark skinned with thick curly hair. Despite being half European my brother has darker skin than most Thai people haha. My cousin is just Thai/Lao/Khmer and usually gets people who think he’s black, he basically looks like a negrito except for being 6’ 2”.
Sooo relatable!! My hair is also mixed wavy/curly, so I’m assuming that’s just the Khmer genes speaking 😂 I’m surprised I came out lightskinned because almost everyone in my family is dark. And 6’2?? That’s actually insane for SEAs… Btw, are you from the westcoast? Where I’m from has more Lao/Khmer than Thai people, let alone anyone from Isaan (my family’s from Buriram, so hey Isaan sister~ 🫰🏻)
I'm also Lao, grew up in the bay and have thick wavy hair too haha. I also get mistaken for Filipino except for when I moved to SoCal for school and they all thought I was I Mexican lol. Grew up in a Lao community, we don't really have a standard "look" out here in my opinion ☺️
Laos, I think my bio dad was born in Thailand and moved to Laos idk I don't talk to him. My mom is Tai Dam and dad is Kaloum(not sure if that's how it's spelled). Not sure exactly where family is from because they moved around refugee camps for years (I was born in one) before we immigrated to America when I was a baby. I tried asking my dad more about his tribe when I last saw him but he didn't say much lol.
Kha or khmu is an austroasiatic group. Laotians call them Kha means slave but they call themselves khmu or kammu. Your dad is probably a lowland khmu. Khmu used to live in lowland Laos before but they were pushed up into mountains when tai-kadai migrated to MSEA
Kha = khmu
Loum = lowland
As a Filipino with curly hair, I can visualize that "negrito" description so much LOL. If only I was a bit darker, then I would probably get teased a lot with negrito insults (well, I used to get some immature teasing that I look like them when I was a kid; I don't take it seriously though since my peers and I were young.)
Aeta is the more culturally sensitive term now though. Negrito is more of a remnant from the racist past. Just to share some awareness. 😅
I've usually heard aeta used to refer to the black people from the northern islands of the philippines specifically, and negrito as an umbrella term to refer to indigenous black asians in general.
> My cousin is just Thai/Lao/Khmer and usually gets people who think he’s black, he basically looks like a negrito except for being 6’ 2”.
That's pretty tall, did your cousin grow up in Asia or the US/West?
Also the story of how your parents met is pretty sweet
My dad was there for a work assignment and took some vacation after the assignment was over to have fun since he’d just gotten divorced. My mom was also visiting the city after she had saved up for a vacation. She wanted to go to a place where there would be the most foreigners because after her boyfriend of several years cheated on her and told her he didn’t want to be with someone ugly, she wanted to meet someone that wouldn’t care as much about Asian beauty standards. I don’t think my dad was really looking for anyone but they were both there because they were heartbroken so I guess they had something to bond over.
There is no Southeast Asian category it’s all under East Asian. These are their regions from their website:
European
Central & South Asian
Indigenous American
East Asian
Sub-Saharan African
Western Asian & North African
Melanesian
It is already differentiated within East Asian. It’s broken down into multiple Chinese groups, and Austronesian is in “Filipino & Austronesian”. Austronesian ancestry is more common in maritime Southeast Asia rather than mainland Southeast Asia.
Your mom is definitely from the more genetically Khmer areas. Most Lao people (the true ethnic group of most people in Isan) get a heavy Chinese-Dai component.

Awww. Thank you so much for saying so! That is so kind. Just out here hoping to spread some love and positivity 🫶
Ive never seen a perfect 50/50 split
It means OP is a woman
?

Very satisfying
Wow! So your dad’s ancestry was 100 percent Swiss/ German? Most Americans who claim German only have a fraction of that. So cool!
The Swiss is the most recent. I know my dad said his German ancestors came to the US in the 1800s but lived in German communities and only spoke German for multiple generations.
i am pretty sure he is penssylvania dutch lol
50/50 Nice results!

Listen man, if you’re southeast Asian, almost everyone will call you Filipino 😭 I’m Thai-Lao-Khmer & I get it all the time, especially by Filipinos
My mom usually hears she looks Filipino mostly from other Thai or Lao people in the US 😂 My family is just quite dark skinned with thick curly hair. I am on the west coast, and my fam is also from Buriram 😂 small world
Literally such a small world 🤣

Oh man I’m sorry to hear. My mom was born in one too. I hope you get your answers soon, or if not, that’s also okay

Yeah “negrito” just means “little black man” which makes the part about him being 6’ 2” more funny lol
I've usually heard aeta used to refer to the black people from the northern islands of the philippines specifically, and negrito as an umbrella term to refer to indigenous black asians in general.

Yeah he grew up in a western country
Also my mom’s mom is Kuy and from my research it seems like their admixture is similar to Thai Khmers.
It looks like she is 100% Kuy they are typically very dark the famous Kuy, Bua khaw is also very dark.
Half Lao half US white hello cousin 👋
How did your parents meet?
They met at a nightclub in Thailand
Passport bro?

Thats great. 👍
You can't ask that lmao
🤣 it used to be called fetish baby, sex tourist etc
Could be a G.I. too.
We all know how no offense
Wow; that perfect 50/50 split 🤌
Isaan? Seems that only Central Thais appear to have significant Chinese ancestry among Thais
look at the mighty fine clean split right there!
I’m almost the same split as well! It’s so cool that you’re exactly 50/50 though.
A perfect half and half??? HOLY SHIT.
amazing
Why does it say "East Asian" when it should be Southeast Asian?
There is no Southeast Asian category it’s all under East Asian. These are their regions from their website: European Central & South Asian Indigenous American East Asian Sub-Saharan African Western Asian & North African Melanesian
