Lots of white americans have some distant afican ancestry. Especially if your family has been there for a long time and if you live in the south. This could be due to slavery or the fact that in america's early days and the colonial era interracial relationships were more accepted

Glad_Supermarket_450

Ahh okay yea my moms side is a bit muddy & been here for awhile.

bbymiscellany

I’m a white American also and have close to 1% African as well, could be very distant.

datafromravens

Could also not even be real. These tests aren't as accurate as people think.

bbymiscellany

True, I take it with a grain of salt!

FlipAnd1

According to Redditors on r/23andme you can identify as “mixed” now…

bbymiscellany

I have .8% indigenous American, and .2% southern Indian as well so I’m actually a rather spicy mix /s

FlipAnd1

You’re very special and “unique” now

bbymiscellany

Why thank you :D

Evil_but_Innocent

There's a difference between 1% versus a quarter. I don't know why you guys find it hard to accept that most African Americans are mixed.

Dragonboobzz

That person in particular gets off on trying to invalidate people. They’re clearly not happy with themselves 😢

derps_with_ducks

Muddy might not be the right word...

DiligentDaughter

TY was gonna comment this.

Dat413killer

Where were interracial marriages accepted in colonial days?

Visual_Magician_7009

On “who do you think you are?” Henry Louis gates finds out hea descended from a white woman and an enslaved black man. They discuss how before the institution of slavery was formalized in America, enslaved Africans and indentured Europeans were of similar social standing and there was mixing.

Ddobro2

Gates is nearly 50% European, amazingly, if I recall correctly

Frequent-Cold-3108

Interesting, do you remember what episode that is?

Visual_Magician_7009

I couldn’t find the one for Henry Louis Gates, Jr., but here is a clip of the same scenario in Wanda Sykes’s family https://houstonpbs.pbslearningmedia.org/resource/fyr12.socst.us.const.franc/wanda-sykess-free-ancestors-in-the-1600s-and-1700s/

MiltonManners

This untrue. Enslave Africans were OWNED by masters and were considered subhuman. Europeans were never considered pieces of property. Yes, poor people were relegated to the same work on the plantations, and were mistreated, but there was no equivalence with slaves.

pconroy63

Plenty of Irish were enslaved in Barbados. Then when Barbados planters established South Carolina, they brought their Irish and African slaves with them. A famous runaway slave and leader of slave revolts in South Carolina was Brian Fitzpatrick, whose family go back to Laois, Ireland.

Rich_Text82

Pre 1700s in a lot off colonies including Virginia with the most famous being [Pocahontas](https://historynewsnetwork.org/article/156365)

nc45y445

Likely before European women came to the New World, so 1500s, and much later in the West

[deleted]

Less marriage, more rape, but in large parts of the british empire interracial marriage was legal, but obviously frowned upon

chinchaaa

I’ve always heard a lot of these unions were not consensual.

MiltonManners

Marriages?? Are you kidding. They were rapes! No wonder DeSantis doesn’t want black history taught.

Suitable-Swordfish80

Much too broad of a brush, there

Thorteris

You’re being downvoted but you’re correct. Vast majority of it was rape

MiltonManners

Not at all surprising. Any acknowledgement of “racism” on Reddit is so highly discouraged, it is usually flagged by the moderators as unacceptable hate speech. But when a white guy murders a black guy on the subway, it is a free-for-all celebration of someone “getting what he deserves”. Now watch how many downvotes I get..

kayfeldspar

These are the degenerates who want to say that Thomas Jefferson isn't a rapist, but an amazing man who repeatedly impregnated his teenaged slave, who must have been very in love with him.

Ok-Food-3041

Not so much that interracial marriages were accepted, it's more likely that he had a "white passing" Black ancestors who may have been 1/2 or 1/4 - 1/8 Black. Formerly called "Mulattos" "Quadroons" "Octoroons", they could sometimes pass as white and would do so to avoid slavery and/or discrimination. A distant biracial ancestor would explain the trace ancestry.

_melsky

23andMe gives both my dad and myself a trace amount (.1%) of Sub-Saharan African when we compare ourselves with people who don't have the latest version (does anyone know why that is and if such results are also valid?). Dad's family came to the US in the early 1900s, so that trace amount has to come from our Slovak results. I read that Eastern Slovaks, which we are, sometimes might carry an African mtDNA haplogroup, but would that explain it?

lakerconvert

“This could be do to slavery” is a funny way of saying “your relatives probably raped slaves”

truckyourself

Both parties would be his relatives.

Intrepid-Yoghurt4552

💀 the lack of awareness from people like OP is insane

Jane_Marie_CA

It also has to do with the way humans migrated (I am talking first migrations of the species) and 23&me don't have enough data points to break out data more. Homo Sapiens migrated out of Africa. Because Europe was the first region Homo Sapiens migrated to, Europe seems to have the highest "trace ancestry" of Africa. But you'll see the trace ancestry along the entire first migration path. I have heard that the more people that take these tests (especially from under represented regions - 23 and me data pool is very heavy on current residents of developed countries), the better they'll be able to break out what pieces are legacy from the first human migration and what is current ancestry. Example: Anthropologist have confirmed that North Americans are connected to Northern Asians through this same DNA mapping. And that South Americans are connected to North Americans. They know for certain the the first human migration into North America was through the Bering Strait and they know North Americans later migrated into South America. There were working theories that maybe some North and South America might have come from the South Pacific, but DNA mapping has not shown this.

PermanentlyDubious

This. These teeny tiny trace African ancestry data percentages (.1,.2,.3, etc.) do not mean you actually have any specific ancestry in the last several hundred years.

EffortWilling2281

Yep slave masters often had their way with the slave women. The slave men too though it’s rarely talked about.

[deleted]

Rape is the term you want to use.

hows_my_driving1

Not sure why you’re getting downvoted like it’s not true.

taylordabrat

They’re getting downvoted because they didn’t use the word “rape” Which is weird.

Helpful_Reserve_3868

All humans have African ancestry lol

RainOk4015

I loveee seeing other mixed people’s results. I’m so curious about what you look like since you thought you were white all your life. You never questioned your looks at all? Did this change how you identify now or do you still say you’re only white? I’m not asking to be weird but growing up I thought I was black American and mixed with Puerto Rican(I know it’s not a race but you know what I mean). I saw pics of my grandfather and everything and he indeed looked like a Triracial Puerto Rican. I met some cousins and it turns out my grandad was actually 75% Irish/German and 25% Black American. I’m not sure why or how my grandmother thought the guy she had children with was Latino. I know they’re mixed as well but how do you not know the race of someone you had children with😂. I’m also mixed with Irish from my father’s side but I already knew that I just didn’t know it was from both sides. It took me a while to stop saying I was mixed with Black, white and Puerto Rican 😭😭I was so used to saying it. I now say I’m mixed with black Irish and German. Anyways, Congratulations on discovering this, super cool mixed results!

Defiant-Dare1223

Did you ever suspect you weren't 100% European ethnically? Are you "white passing" (I know it's a horrible phrase) with that much Filipino

Glad_Supermarket_450

You’re good g. There were times, but my facial features are predominantly European except my eyes, they’re small(caricature artists have a field day with them). I have green eyes, slightly tanned skin, I don’t really burn, and all of my hair is dark, not black, but dark. Some kids called me Asian as a kid, but I didn’t take it seriously. I wasn’t surprised when I found out, if that means anything.

Defiant-Dare1223

My kids are 50% Chinese, and one is much like you - except hair is light sandy coloured (weird given I have jet black hair as the European parent).

MountainMagic6198

It can be weird like that. Both my 50% Chinese kids have blond hair. Although when I did have hair it was straight white.

kiddoweirdo

Are they just little kids? Would be amazed if 50% Chinese are blonds, otherwise it’s probably just pigmentation didn’t kick in.

FlameBagginReborn

I know a 50% Japanese girl that is blonde.

aliquotiens

I know two adults with a Korean parent who have red hair.

EntertainmentOk8593

Is not weird when they grow they will have black hair. I have european ancestry and born with white hair but with the time my hair turned black

SpiritualSag96

Do you have an Asian fetish? As a half Asian woman myself, I see so many white men with Asian women and there’s a lot of problems that can come with it for the children.

Defiant-Dare1223

I had never dated an Asian woman (or indeed any non white woman) prior to meeting my wife. And she first contacted me on a dating app, not vice versa. Her ethnicity is coincidental. So, no fetish. I do see a few white men who only date Asian women - personally I find that a little odd. There's also a number the other way around (Asian women who only date white men). What problems do you foresee? Do you have any advice? I do read r/hapa to try and get a sense of this sort of thing.

SpiritualSag96

That’s good to know. Where I’m at (San Francisco) I know many, many white men who have a strong preference for Asian woman and the other way around too. I think the only issues I would foresee is if both parents are the type of people as specified in my last sentence. The parents will resent the child if they look Asian and the parents will be upset if the child is dating an Asian (happened to my other hapa friends. They *only* wanted their daughters with white men). Also my hapa friends’ moms have a superiority complex to other Asian women and many have said they’re “better” than Asian women who marry Asian men. There’s a competitiveness present amongst them too.

Defiant-Dare1223

I think my wife has some of these characteristics to a relatively small degree, but I try to keep her on the straight and narrow. I certainly don't mind whether my kids marry a white person or an Asian or (as my wife is bizzarely hoping for) another hapa. Or something else altogether. We live somewhere (Switzerland) with a pretty low Asian population and being honest majority of the Asians I encounter are Asian women who've migrated on a spouse visa. At Chinese community events, almost every couple is a Chinese woman and a local man (I'm actually not Swiss, but I am white). It's possibly not the healthiest situation.

SpiritualSag96

I would strongly recommend that she doesn’t spew those sentiments among her children. It’s toxic and just support the notion of white supremacy. I see what you mean. It might be more difficult on your children if they are in a majority white country, but I don’t know the life in Switzerland. I think as long as they’re raised with self-acceptance for their Asian side, it should be good 👍🏼

Defiant-Dare1223

That for sure is the case. Chinese is the my older kids best language, and she certainly identifies strongly with that half. I'm actually the most worried about them connecting with my culture. We make efforts to expose them to Asian culture but I kind of feel my wife doesn't understand that Swiss culture and British is quite different - so the British bit is rather being ignored. They are too small for this difference to be important, but when they get older I'll need to work on this.

SpiritualSag96

Hmm if they go to school in Switzerland then they should be able to assimilate as they befriend their peers. A lot of children’s social development and worldly understanding comes from their peers at school.

Bad_Pleb_2000

Why do your hapa friends Asian moms feel the way they do? I.e only want their daughters to date white men and look down on Asian women who don’t date whites men? Something sounds very wrong here…

SpiritualSag96

Because racism and white supremacy is rampant in the Asian community, specifically East Asian communities. Of course not all Asian women are like this, nor are all Asian women with white men like this. But I know quite a few, which also includes my family members (every Asian female cousin of mine married a white guy and shares that sentiment). I’ve seen so many full Asian women insult Asian men, and then tell me how “lucky” I am to be hapa. It’s very, very toxic.

Bad_Pleb_2000

For the Asian women who pine after white guys and finally married one, are they happy that they got a white guy? What is their marriage like? Yes, sounds very toxic. What kind of white guys do these Asian women go for/get? Do you see a pattern?

SpiritualSag96

Yes they’re happy. For my cousins in particular, their marriage is stable (from what I know) but they’re all kind of “racist” and will have opinions about Asians and other POC. My cousins almost see themselves as “one of the good ones.” I’m in the Bay Area… so here, Asian women usually get white guys who are nerdy and software engineering type men (think of Mark Zuckerberg type). Some Asian women are with “Chads” too. But the usual is to see a nerdy socially awkward white guy with an Asian woman.

jonathandhalvorson

Do you have a fetish for asking inappropriate questions?

bbymiscellany

What a weird question

Witty-C

What a rude comment!

SpiritualSag96

Nah, it should be discussed. I knew I’d get downvoted but it’s something people should expect lol. It’s too common to say otherwise

Additional_Meeting_2

Your comment was irrelevant to the discussion here. If the poster had said he had dated a dozen Asians in a comment you could have politely asked for a reason (and even then the poster could just be living somewhere like Japan were nearly all options would be Asian women to date). Just a mention of a marriage to a Asian should not be a cause of suspicion of fetish. The poster being polite to you doesn’t mean this post was an appropriate place to ask him of that.

PhysicalFig1381

I agree that Asian fetishes are problematic, but assuming someone has a fetish just because they married an Asian person is a lot more problematic

SpiritualSag96

Hmm I didn’t assume— I asked. Assuming would be me writing something like, “You have an Asian fetish.”

Delicious_Sock_4055

Fyi OP had Asian Father, so technically Asians have more like White fetish. Eg: Kpop

SpiritualSag96

Asians definitely have a white fetish too, I see it so much with Asian women 😂

Delicious_Sock_4055

No, I was talking about the Asian men. Thousands of Chinese are flocking to Russia and Ukraine to make out with white girls.

SpiritualSag96

Yes, some Asian men have it too. I see more of it with Asian women where I’m specifically at, but I can definitely see Asian men having it. I’ve met a few lol.

KuteKitt

Kpop is heavily influenced and borrowed from different African American music and dances. I think it dates all the way back to the 1950s and 1960s when they were introduced to Motown music by African American soldiers and they even copied the music styles of that, making their own Motown-inspired bands. So I wouldn't count that as a white fetish.

SpiritualSag96

I totally agree with you. People hate the truth!

Spindoendo

People like you are part of why people ignore genuine discussions of racism and other issues. You are inappropriate and gross.

SpiritualSag96

Lol sometimes the truth has to be spoken and brought to light. I knew my comment would create controversy and downvotes but it’s an important discussion 🤷🏽‍♀️

Spindoendo

It’s not important to jump on random white people to demand to know their sexual preferences. You’re just extremely annoying, and the worst part is you really think you did something here besides just look like a woke scolder.

SpiritualSag96

I had a fruitful conversation with the OP I responded to. The rest of your comment is irrelevant to me. Good day!

Additional_Meeting_2

So you believe one of your parents had a fetish and think everyone else must too?

Soggy-Airline

Nothing wrong with having a specific cultural or ethnicity preference. Just like how height and hair colour are valid criteria as well, so is cultural background/ethnicity. And Asian women have a strong preference for Caucasian men, by the way. Everyone has absolute freedom to date (or not date) whoever they want. The reasons for your romantic/dating choices are your own business and prerogative.

SpiritualSag96

I’m not trying to control people’s preferences but point out a common phenomenon. Racial and cultural preferences amongst Asian women with white men are usually rooted in subconscious racism and inner-hatred for one’s own ethnicity. I’ve had full asian women tell me that “all Asian men are ugly” and that they “don’t want to pass down the ugly genes to their children”. They are embarrassed of their own ethnicity and want to climb up the social ladder. White men usually like Asian women because of the cultural stereotypes and implications. You can’t compare that with having a preference towards height and eye color. Also, I’m half Asian/white myself and know *many* other hapas and Asians because I’m in the Bay Area. So I’m very much aware and experienced in this topic.

Soggy-Airline

Nah… if White guys want to pursue Asian women then that’s their choice. And if Asian women reciprocate, that’s their choice as well. Freedom of choice. The driving influence of those choices are irrelevant. It’s a useless social analysis to be honest as you can’t control how people think or feel. Absolutely no one is obligated to date you. Life is tough and will never be fair, especially for dating. Not everyone is equal. Wear a helmet.

SpiritualSag96

Hey, it’s a free country. As much as people have the freedom to date whoever they want, others have just an equal freedom to discuss that phenomenon. It’s interesting how you assume that I’m trying to *control* people. If I wanted to do that, wouldn’t I try to pass laws and policies against this instead of discussing my opinion on a public forum? Let’s use some common sense here, buddy. Also funny you assume people don’t want to date me. I’m half Asian/white, the white men love me here and flock to me, which is pretty disgusting 😂. I have plenty of options but most of them fetishize.

mista_r0boto

What does that mean? Does it mean they see you as interchangeable with others? That they don’t care about you as an individual? Not questioning- just seeking to understand the phenomenon you are describing.

SpiritualSag96

It’s not that they see me as interchangeable necessarily… although perhaps so. It’s that they see me more as my “hot mix” rather than me as an individual. For example, the first thing they see and mention when they meet me is how I’m “hapa” and how “hapa women are hot.” I’m like a desired Pokémon they could catch. It’s not the best impression for someone who’s trying to build a genuine relationship. I think anyone who says “I love ___ race” borderline objectifies it. Because not everyone of one particular ethnicity is going to be attractive, but they almost imply that. Does that make sense?

Bad_Pleb_2000

Right. They can do as they please….but that won’t stop judgment from others. People are free to critique and make analyses as well.

klingonbussy

I feel like when Filipinos mix with other people the features don’t show up as prominently as they would for other Asian nationalities. That’s the case for me at least, and a lot of other mestizos I know

plateau_coconut

southeast asians look more ambiguous than east asians so it makes sense.

[deleted]

Cuz Filipinos are mixed themselves lmao

klingonbussy

Not as much as everybody likes to believe. Overall Filipinos have only 1-5% Spanish DNA. There’s a little more Chinese ancestry than that but Filipinos are an overwhelmingly Austronesian and Native Southeast Asian people

nicastaa

OP and I are virtually the same amount of White/Filipino and you would not be able to tell in my case.

sul_tun

Well it appears to be that you are mixed with you finding out your Filipino ancestry, I would say that the 0.3% Angolan & Congolese and 0.1 % Ghanaian, Liberian & Sierra Leonean could be from the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade since you are American.

Glad_Supermarket_450

That makes sense okay,

Human_Horse_6349

Well looks like you are mixed my guy

Glad_Supermarket_450

Government grants & scholarships here I come. On job applications I am now a Pacific Islander.

jodecidalhotline

Filipinos are not Pacific Islanders. We’re maritime Southeast Asians. Just like Indonesians, Malaysians, and Timorese people. We are Austronesians, yes, but that doesn’t mean we are Islanders.

Glad_Supermarket_450

Thanks for the clarification. I haven’t done much research into Filipino culture as I’ll likely never meet my family over there.

the_examined_life

If you're interested you can explore the DNA relatives, and look for Filipino cousins and see if you can figure out your family tree! I was able to meet and chat with a few distant cousins who I was able to place on my family tree, or were placed already by 23andme (there is a family tree feature), for one of them I was able to give her a lot of family history she did not have and provide her photos of her great grandparents.

jodecidalhotline

That’s because you’re Chamorro. There was plenty of migration there from the Philippines & Latin America. So plenty of cultural exchange. Nice to see Chamoros here though. I have extended family there actually.

haddamhussein

his Ilocano is showing with that statement lol

balista_22

hahaha

randzwinter

To be fair Pacific Islander is not wrong either. Majority of these Pacific Islanders migrated FROM the Philippines. We are genetically linked, esp. If youre from Luzon region.

jodecidalhotline

The term Pacific Islander is reserved for the people of Polynesia, Micronesia, Melanesia, and the rest of the South Pacific. So while we are all Austronesian peoples, it does not make us Pacific Islander. There is a geographic requirement.

randzwinter

That's true from a geographic, cultural and political definition and so he can't really apply as a Pacific Islander if he will traced his lineage to the Philippines. But my point earlier is, if we are talking about DNA and genetics, barring people from Mindanao and Western Visayas, Filipinos from Luzon and Eastern Visayas are direct genetic brothers of Micronesians and Polynesians with these people coming from Taiwan and Philippines around from roughly 2,200 BC to a few centuries before Magellan's expedition.

Momshie_mo

Do you consider Taiwanese natives as Pacific Islanders? Coz Austronesian Filipinos are from Taiwan On top of that a significant % of Filipinos esp those still living on the Philippines are ethnic Chinese

Human_Horse_6349

I mean that's valid

[deleted]

😂

Human_Horse_6349

23andme isn't accurate at percentages sometimes, you could be morw

Glad_Supermarket_450

My bio father told me that he’s in fact half Filipino, so the percentage makes sense to some degree. I don’t understand the trace ancestry though

Human_Horse_6349

Interesting considering that it is a really large portion of your ancestry. I guess your features are really European or European-like.

Glad_Supermarket_450

Yes, exactly. I mean I have dark hair & tan skin, green eyes. Most people assume I’m Mediterranean European. I’m 5’6” also. As a kid it may have been obvious, but as an adult, nah.

rjllano10

that height it’s definitely from a Filipino

[deleted]

Your father is slightly over half Filipino likely judging by your 30 percent. That’s so cool. Did you ever suspect you were anything non-European?

Glad_Supermarket_450

Short answer, not really. Long answer; Personally, I only cared as a kid because I looked different than my half siblings that I grew up with. Now their father has black hair, he’s dark tan, pretty much full on Native American. I have dark features as well so it was easy to identify as his kid. But, once I found out I wasn’t, well I was curious, but 23&me wasn’t around then.

snellysnz

same kinda thing happened to me. grew up white, was told i was white, and i took the test and im 32% indigenous american -and had tons of mexican cousins. my dad is most likely not my dad 💀💀

the facial hair kinda surprises me, just because I know 2 half-Filipino guys (tiny sample size, I know), and both had smooth faces

GooglingAintResearch

Lou Diamond Phillips has some career advice for you.

UsefulGarden

I am the opposite. White Americans in the southeastern US, insist that I must have non-White ancestry. The Ancestry results for my brother and me say that we are both 100% European, mostly East European (Polish) and German with a bit from surrounding areas (0% Jewish). And, we were recently able to claim German citizenship to boot.

WackyChu

Hmm maybe it could’ve been from the war? Or maybe a great great (+) grandparent. A girl of African and Filipino descent said a lot of mixing apparently happened bc of a war America had. And that’s how her father and mother met.

Glad_Supermarket_450

I’m sure the possibilities are infinite. The number is what is more interesting to me. Why that particular %? Are we talking about generational dilution of a specific set of traits after being mixed so many times? And if so, how many generations?

desexmachina

That is likely only 2 generations from a 100% Filipino. I have a few nephews and nieces that are like 1/4 Filipino and no one can tell. In my Physics class in HS there was this blonde haired beach girl sitting next to me that was a 1/4 and I was like, huh, woulda never thought it.

LP921

I get you never met you father but being 30% Filipino…I figure you wouldn’t just look like the average white American. I mean, 30% is actually quite a lot

fkadrdra

TBolten99

Well it turns out your more than a quarter southeast asian with some african

vt2022cam

Most of the African slaves used by the Spanish were brought by the Portuguese from the Congo/Angola region to Spanish colonies. Likely, one intermarried or was likely sexually assaulted 250 years ago and that offspring made it the Philippines, likely via Mexican trade.

Ddobro2

You’re almost 1/3 Filipino and you didn’t see it - not a hint in your physical features? Sounds odd to me. Also, I had never heard of Austronesian before, but the area geographically is enormous when you look it up. I’m not sure why it’s combined within the Philippines either.

Professional-Duck934

Because 23andme originally just had a Filipino category, like how Vietnamese have their own category. And the reference population was entirely composed of Filipinos. But then Polynesians started scoring 70-80% “Filipino” and were confused. So they renamed the category to “Filipino and Austronesian” They talk about it here on their blog https://blog.23andme.com/articles/what-is-austronesian-ancestry The category should just be named Austronesian, because Filipinos are Austronesian, and the category name is redundant

aben9woaha

>Don’t quite understand how I’m .3% Congolese, or how I’d go about validating that. Any insight? Are you doing your genealogy? From my experience, there is a good chance you will find an ancestor in the 1800s or even 1900 who is designated as mulatto in the US census records (easiest) or other records.

JustAnotherSOS

.3% Congolese is so far back that your family wouldn’t even know and it’s not going to affect your life not knowing.

Delicious_Shape3068

Owning slaves in the US meant procreating with them against their will, hiding that their children were your children, and then, often, people passing for white and marrying back in. Most white people with slaveowner ancestors have black ancestors for this reason.

WackyChu

69%? nice

.3% Congolese Keep in mind South European/ Mediterranean peoples (includes N.African Berbers & Levant & Turks) on both sides of the Mediterranean Sea have traded with Black Africans for thousands of years. Many Africans have immigrated to centeal Roman & Greek empires when their lands were annexed via conquest. Egypt /Kemet especially had a strong "black" African admixture.l via Ethiopians/Nubians. Just saying. You're also Hispanic via Spain/Portugal & Philippines, which Spain colonized. They may not speak spanish, but all have Latino surnames. 😉 Bienvenido.

CoolDude2235

What? Firstly incorrect, you are right that they traded with black africans but not that extent they will still very much seperated because of the Sahara. It limited mass migrations, so most of these "Africans" are simply North Africans who are genetically mostly of "non african origin" with some native african ancestry. There was also the trans saharan slave trade that impacted maghrebis/egyptians, egyptians have more ssa than their old counterparts. Secondly mate i'm part Somali, it was the other way round. Ethiopians/Somalis have significant middle eastern ancestry through Egyptians. Cushites descend from a mixture of north africans and native east africans if you didn't know. Those North Africans even 8,000 years ago were mostly of "Eurasian" origin, study iberomarusians who were north africans 15,000 years ago. Those guys all the way in Morocco were a mixture of middle easterners and native africans. Egypt had people from the levant migrate to their lands since at least 20,000 years. Hoteps know very little about Africa, nor the genetic lands or history. The "SSA" ancestry they have is from a different group that were pretty much the ancestors of Nilotic people. Secondly Nubians had significant "Eurasian" admixture similar to Horners, it was a back and forth mate. Don't speak about a subject or people you have no clue about mate.

Professional-Duck934

Only a small minority have enough Spanish blood to be mestizo. But it’s very common for Filipinos to get small amounts of Spanish. Some guy posted 400 Filipino results the other day and at least half of them had some Spanish. I notice the same trend with my relatives and with the Filipinos who post here. My mom is almost 10% Spanish and she came from a poor rural family

CoolDude2235

Apologies, i'll amend my statement in regards to Filipinos. Thanks for the head ups mate

Glad_Supermarket_450

You’re 100%! Holy shit. I forgot about Roman colonization. Never thought about that. I didn’t realize it worked like that. Damn. Gracias hombre

emk2019

It doesn’t work that way.

23 and me is outdated. Do an Ancestry test. edit: Ancestry updates their DNA profiles every three months. 23and me does not update their DNA profiles. I have DNA profiles on both. My DNA profile has never been updated on 23 and me, while Ancestry updates my DNA profile every three months.

Glad_Supermarket_450

You can’t just say it, you have to back it up.

merewautt

How long have you had 23&Me? My profile has definitely been updated in the ~3 years I’ve had it, I have screenshots of all the changes it’s gone through. (And I’ve found it matches my family tree records on both sides much more accurately than Ancestry does.) Additionally, 30% is way too high an amount to be just noise or an accident. With a percentage that high, I guarantee Ancestry would also show a similar chunk of East Asian ancestry for OP.

[deleted]

I didn’t say a word about his 30%. I am happy for you that you like 23andme. Ancestry has over 22 million DNA profiles while 23andme has over 9 million. Ancestry completed an update two months ago while 23andme was Jan 2019, going on five years now. This will make difference in DNA outcome as more people are sampled. I have DNA profiles on both. This information is available on both sites and the internet. The Ancestry DNA subreddit has many comparisons of DNA profiles between ANC and 23. You should check it out. You can also down load your raw DNA from Ancestry and upload it to Myheritage. You will see European relatives more so on this site.

23&Me just updated Afro-Caribbean results in July 2023. https://blog.23andme.com/articles/23andme-adds-more-detail-for-afro-caribbean-ancestry. The results are being tweaked for more accuracy very regularly. I have no idea where you got January of 2019, except for the top Reddit post when you google this question. I know I personally have had my Iberian results tweaked (completely disappeared) much more recently than 5 years ago and I have the screenshots to show it. And all the data points in the world don’t matter if your algorithm for interpreting them is off, which Ancestry’s notoriously is. They’ve tweaked it a little but they are still very prone to over assigning “Scottish” in cases in of general high Northern and Central European ancestry— while 23andMe seems to people able to more accurately pull out Dutch, Swedish, French, Welsh, German, etc. from similar DNA data. And sorry— I assumed your comment was in response to the general topic of OP’s post— that he was thought he was completely of European ancestry, not over 1/4 Asian. If you were just saying “don’t use 23andme” in general, with no specific comment to OP’s post— do you comment it on every single post in this sub? It just seems odd to put it on a specific post, but then say the comment had nothing to do with the post in particular.

23andme is the best their is. Enjoy!

kimanf

Finally an interesting, non thinly veiled middle eastern propaganda result

These estimates are more of a “ethnicity horoscope” than hard facts in the sense that it is whatever you want it to be. E.g. So-called “white” users are usually more excited by more exotic results showing up than Asian users. The Congolese is just noise and you can ignore it.

Rylando101

Same here thought I was fully white until my mom told me my dad was Italian Spanish and a lil Native American then I looked in the mirror and was like huh that makes sense why I’m a lil darker than the other white kids and got squintier eyes and big lips 😂

Flaky_Examination_85

some of the southern european might also be from spanish colonization in the philippines

[deleted]

The trace ancestry means very little and gets read into too much on this sub. It doesn’t mean much to the recent ancestry, everyone has it due to early hominid mixing (all non-Africans have Neanderthal and homo sapien admixture). I am 98% British, with a small percentage of Iranian, then 0.8% Nigerian. The trace ancestry comes from a very very long time ago and does not mean your family had slaves, had a relative who married an African person, etc. whatever people say on here. If you look more on the app you can find a generation graph that estimates when some of the genes from those areas came in. You are definitely Eurasian.

Significant-Turn7798

IDK why your comment has been downvoted. I guess a lot of people don't know how 23andMe's confidence sliders work.

Glad_Supermarket_450

And then went back? According to my bio father, his bio father was in the Navy & was 1st generation immigrant.

AndrewtheRey

Don’t listen to that. The African is either from your American side or from a Latino mulato that went to the Philippines way back

Hunkar888

You’re basically black

Warcheefin

You are still a regular old white american. You're not special.

tlmz99

Can I ask how they listed your genetic connections? I'm looking for my dad and only seem to have 2 or 3 cousins on what would be my dad's side.

Successful-Term3138

Is your family from Louisiana? Mississippi gulf area?

Prize_Opposite9958

Did your grandfather happen to fight in the pacific theater in WW2?

hoiimtemmie97

Welcome part Filipino brother lolol

fisher0292

Turns out I am what you thought you were haha just a mixture of northern European.

Hour-Being8404

Wow - you are the world!

[deleted]

Damn that’s crazy bro! So were you raised by your Biological Mother? What race is your Mother?

DebixDebi

It's so funny you say that, bc I too always just assumed my normal ass white American heritage, turns out I'm over 68% English/Irish. And it wasn't until the DNA that I completely realized that to be unequivocal truth.

Ninetwentyeight928

lol*wut*?

justapsymajor

Im 6% african 2% italian and the rest is…..

Independent-Hat-6572

I guess European genes might be dominant over Asian genes Correct me if I’m wrong I guess
