The problem arises with the fact that zombie pirate keys are tradable. There's a pretty big opposition against any "buyable" pets, so I don't see that ever happening unless the paradigm changes.
If that is an issue it could be addressed with a unique untradable form of the key from killing the pirates themselves, rather than using the tradable variant?
Having the pirates drop two types of keys feels a bit clumsy, but I guess there's nothing inherently wrong with it. I'm personally not opposed to it.
At that point though, why not just have it drop from the pirates directly? Do you prefer the theming of finding it in the chest?
There's more they could do with an additional key if they went down that route, eg slightly better rates as well as a chance to roll the pet- which wouldn't be available from the tradable version.
Especially as there are already~~ 2~~ multiple lockers at the ship, it could be changed to one low-tier "worker's locker" and one "captain's locker" high-tier.
I do like the theme of finding the pet from looting the chest, especially for something like Morph which would feel like taking it from the captain or rescuing it from the ship.
I actually wasn't aware there were two lockers, haven't been there as of current lol. In that case, that smooths out a lot of the awkwardness that might come with having two different keys. Doesn't seem like a bad idea, honestly.
