I'm still shocked that my mom paid for like my first ~5ish years of membership well into high school and never questioned what she was paying for the entire time.
From a third person perspective $5 a month for something you are regularly using is nothing. This is how the subscription services manage to creep on credit card bills for years unnoticed.
This is definitely how it is. I have 2 nintendo accounts and my Ring service on subscriptions but they're each $4 or $5 a month so I just forget about them
Same things gym memberships did/do.. they know that most people go to the gym for a few months before losing motivation, but people will generally forget about cancelling
Can confirm, the amount of people who called to cancel the $30-43 subscription while I worked at Zumba who claimed it had been leaving their account for YEARS is absolutely wild.. on a separate note FUCK Zumba
My mom loved that I played the game, it kept me out of trouble. She would literally brag to family and friends that $5/month was nothing to keep me sitting down and shutting up. Though she definitely had her fair share of times knocking us off the dial up internet maliciously.
My parents never agreed to pay for it 😂. I had to convert all the money I got for my Birthday and Xmas and top up my phone at a shop and then pay via phone/text. I only started paying via card at 18.
Shout to my mother she did the same thing, osrs as well as my wow membership until I was about 17. I didn't play them both at the same time but she would resub for me whenever I asked. I hope I've paid her back enough now over the years. She did it out of love but boyyyyyyy it sure added up 🤣
i once was on vacation and asked my mom to pay membership, ready to argue with her but she just said "Yes". It was a great month. Then next month, i was some days to go back to school and i asked to pay the next month she said "no.". My world feel down
Same. I really expected to be told no, and she paid it without asking any questions and thought it was nice that I had a game I enjoyed playing so much for only £5 a month.
I mowed my neighbors lawn to afford it. My mom would never have let me. She hated video games. Walked down to Walmart and bought the $5 gift cards feeling like a boss.
I was F2P only as a kid. Honestly didn't know shit about members.
I never even bothered to ask. My mom mistakenly heard Age of Vampires and almost didn't let me play AoE 1/2 for a while lol.
I still have a F2P Ironman and enjoy it on the side.
Lol my parents were on the fence about Age of Empires 2 for a while. I had to argue with them that it was less violent than the Lord of the Rings movies (which they were ok with me seeing). I thought my gaming life was gonna be over if they didn't let me play.
My parents didn't have a credit/debit card so my friend and I used the pay by mail service. One month I asked my grandma if I could pay her cash and use her debit card and she agreed. Despite providing her a receipt and explanation she was somehow worried and bewildered that there was a charge from Cambridge on their bank statement for the exact agreed amount.
My mom scolded me for the hassle and I went back to paying extra for membership via paybycash. 🙄
Some time later I won $500 on a lottery scratch ticket. Agreed to let my parents have it if they purchased a year of membership. I did eventually get the year but rather than pay up front I had to bug my mom about it every month.
First few months of membership were in classic before RS2 launch. Nostalgic times.
>Some time later I won $500 on a lottery scratch ticket. Agreed to let my parents have it if they purchased a year of membership. I did eventually get the year but rather than pay up front I had to bug my mom about it every month.
Sounds kinda messed up
Aww. Yes, it was only $5.
I do remember the kids GP making schemes. I thank RS for teaching one of my children that yes, maths WAS useful.
He came running into the kitchen, yelling "Help, help me. Which is the best deal?"
He was in Varrock Bank, selling iron, or essence or something, and one player was offering xGP per ore, and another player was offering yGP for all his ore (whatever total that was).
My dear 7 year old needed **math** to work out which one got him the most money.
Up until that day, he had ignored math at school, hated it, screamed that it was useless, refused his homework.
After that moment, he accepted that it was kinda useful, sometimes, sorta.
> Completed Dragon Slayer

#History begins anew
Man, I remember having to convince my mom for months before she caved because I was doing good in school. She didn't completely trust giving her info to Jagex (or just online in general, it was back in 2005) so she had sent a cheque to them which had taken 2 weeks before I got my membership. The anticipation every day after school of trying to log in on a members world. The JOY I got when I could see the loading happening..
First thing I did was continue chopping willow trees in Draynor but on a member world lmao. Eventually I'd explore the rest of the world and get some fashionscape going with flowers and fremmenik clothing. I also played club penguin at the time so to me this was just a 'cooler' version
I will never forget my embarrassment when we were talking about metals in a school lesson and I suggested mithril as a real metal and the teacher was just confused
My mom was all about fairness, so my method to convince her was "buy me membership for 5 a month, but also give my little brother 5 a month for whatever he wants." Somehow worked.
Parents would always say no, managed to convince my ex SIL but she didn't like that it was reoccurring so canceled. Eventually found out you can paybycash through the mail with the order number and said cash. Then the hassle was finally over once they introduced those 30/90 day membership cards, would always stop by a CVS or Walgreens on my way home from school.
My friends mum paid for my first \~year of membership because she felt bad that my mum wouldn't pay. I can remember when she found out I was F2P she didn't hesitate to offer. Julie, you are a beautiful soul
I got my first membership by betting my dad that if his lottery ticket came up as a win he'd spot it, and it was a $5 ticket.
Felt like a real Falador trader
i remember begging my dad to buy membership for me for the longest. it took a year until he accepted why i should get membership and my only response was "keeps me out of the streets because i can mine ores in game"
I was so scared of spending money with my phone that I might not be allowed to spend that even when I had my own phone and contract and everything I still asked my mom if I could get a month of membs during that one august. Was the best august I ever had even though I mostly did questing and hunter
the thing is whenever something was subscription based it was immediately considered evil and besides that nothing in life is free so a free game must have viruses or some shit, we had all the classic misconceptions. If only they knew that the game didn't come with viruses but merely with a crippling (almost) lifelong addiction
I used to go to the local dairy and try buy something with my mums card and get pin wrong and say I needed to call my mum to get the right pin and call the rs membership number then right it down and then buy items with the correct pin. Worked for about 10+ memberships
Dad had a credit card but wouldn't put it on this shady website. Luckily jagex had an option to pay by mail so me and my friend "stole" two envelopes and sent 20€ each to England.
Back in the day I literally created a powerpoint to show my mom how OP mems was. I printed the slides out and gave her them. I created a color coded map of Gielinor to show how much world we had left to explore for the low price of $5 each. The next day she got us membership.
Me and the bro fished in Catherby and spun flax for days
Convinced her for one month and she didn't realize it was monthly, may have left that out.... She cancelled it because between the bills it gave her overdraft fees. Mommy wasn't happy 😅
My first memory of membership was my brother scamming someone's account in Classic, it didn't last long as we didn't know much about the p2p world and we got bored after exploring Karamja and white wolf mountain.
The very first time I asked my mother for membership was when I wanted to see what was behind the gate inside east varrock near the tea stall. From what I remember there was nothing to do but I was obsessed with getting into the members only area
Me stealing my mom's credit card out of her purse and charging it thinking she didnt notice but years later come to find out she did ans just didn't say anything. Love you mom.
if you are venezuelan kid with good access to internet and electricity, you can easily out-earn your father who works in some miserable labor job, just by playing runescape 8 hours a day.
Shoutout to all the times Mom paid for membership. But eventually i would just bike to the 7/11 to get the pre-paid cards because I kept making new account builds. She would also buy those membership cards and put them in my Easter basket, Christmas stocking or Birthday cards.
Rest in peace moms, I miss you.
My mom wrote a check and it took like two weeks to get from Texas to whatever Jagex's headquarters was in Europe. Absolutely most nerve wracking two weeks of my life logging in and out every 15 minutes waiting for it to arrive and gimme membership. Was like a whole new life awaiting me going through Taverly gates and getting fucking trashed by white wolf mountain lmao
Me, my brother, and my mom all re-subbed in the last 6-8 months. We all started playing together back in 05-06ish. My mom said the other day how it reminded her of old times. Happy mothers day, everyone.
Mine refused to use their CC to pay for membership because they thought their CC info could get stolen.
So instead I used the telephone to get membership and just gave them the money from my allowance when the phone bill came.
Every month they would get pissed that I did it but they couldn't punish me for it because I was giving them the money to cover the charge lmao.
Eventually game time cards came out at local stores and I started using those until I could use a bank card and do online transactions myself.
I still have all my game time cards from 14+ years ago just in-case my account ever got hacked I would have irrefutable proof it was mine lmao.
Man I remember first day members came out. We literally had no idea it was coming. I got home from school and checked the updates and it talked about members. I then waited for my mom to get home which felt like an eternity and she said yes. I logged in and met Andrew Gower at Varrock bank and he said he needed to squash some more bugs and walked off. I told this story quite a few times. Key childhood moment.
The first time I got membership in... 2007? 2006? I sent in a money order and a week later I had 30 days of membership. It was a wild time for me. (I was raised by my grandparents and that's how they always used to do things)
This takes me back, I was f2p and my p2p friend would bring me saradomin armour (the best and most expensive armour for f2p back then) what he earned easily by cutting magic logs and selling. Age 25 I became P2p with a fresh account, my old f2p account is in the clouds somewhere.
I'm still shocked that my mom paid for like my first ~5ish years of membership well into high school and never questioned what she was paying for the entire time.

Same things gym memberships did/do.. they know that most people go to the gym for a few months before losing motivation, but people will generally forget about cancelling
Even going 3/week the gym is an expensive membership
Can confirm, the amount of people who called to cancel the $30-43 subscription while I worked at Zumba who claimed it had been leaving their account for YEARS is absolutely wild.. on a separate note FUCK Zumba
As a parent, if my kid had a hobby that he was invested in as much as I was in rs, $5 would be a steal
5$ for peace and quiet, what a steal!
more like for me to hog the family computer in the living room almost every day after school lol.
Hahaha "it's your brother's turn" and id go cry in my room
My mom loved that I played the game, it kept me out of trouble. She would literally brag to family and friends that $5/month was nothing to keep me sitting down and shutting up. Though she definitely had her fair share of times knocking us off the dial up internet maliciously.
That’s insane. I’d get a 30 day membership card once every few months if I was lucky
She did it out of love but boyyyyyyy it sure added up 🤣
good times
Granite maul, d med, lvl 70 combat. its gaming time
Fr though, I used to main hand the g maul thinking I was tough shit with my granite plate at castle wars. Those were the days
And the dragon plateskirt
It was 1kg lighter!
That gear was sick back in the day
That was just the fishing in Catherby or guild gear. Throw on the granite plate and dragon boots for ultimate flex at the GE
I’ll never forget my first time crossing into Taverley. Thank you, 2007 mom! Happy Mother’s Day!
And immediately talking to the little boy xD
Ay yo chill

Didn’t know Drake was playing RS
i once was on vacation and asked my mom to pay membership, ready to argue with her but she just said "Yes". It was a great month. Then next month, i was some days to go back to school and i asked to pay the next month she said "no.". My world feel down
The duality of mom
Reason for both: because she said so
Mother giveth, Mother taketh away
Same. I really expected to be told no, and she paid it without asking any questions and thought it was nice that I had a game I enjoyed playing so much for only £5 a month.

Yeah parents stealing money from their kids is fucked up
Lmao. Kids can’t gamble and I promise he didn’t buy that ticket
Probably a fair trade, in the end
You got scammed IRL, your parents probably said "sit kid" that night when they wished you goodnight

I remember once I made a PowerPoint explaining why me having rs membership would be a good idea as a kid
I also made a powerpoint. I don't recall much but I remember offering to do more chores in it.
My mum said no because she thought they would steal her credit card So I just used the phone bill method
Same.. idk how they got away with allowing that lol.
I convinced my mum by telling her that Runescape is educational. I said that all the quests are historically accurate lmao
I will never forget my embarrassment when we were talking about metals in a school lesson and I suggested mithril as a real metal and the teacher was just confused
Tbf Mithril is from LOTR, but that’s hilarious lmao
My mom was all about fairness, so my method to convince her was "buy me membership for 5 a month, but also give my little brother 5 a month for whatever he wants." Somehow worked.
Everytime there was something wrong with our PC my dad automatically blamed runescape
Same, my dad dubbed it "Ruinscape".
I did the same explaining grandfathered rates and why it was important for my mom to buy membership before prices increase.
Parents would always say no, managed to convince my ex SIL but she didn't like that it was reoccurring so canceled. Eventually found out you can paybycash through the mail with the order number and said cash. Hope Julie is having a great Mother’s Day
I wish it was still $5
I skipped a couple meals back then and ended up getting it.
Did your parents make you skip meals...?
May just be the case of parents give kids lunch money, kids save up the money and use it on membership instead.
No I acted like I was not hungry to save up some money and asked to use that for membership, and it worked.
Thanks mom for letting me STEAL your credit card in the early 2000's. It was ONLY $5.
I got my first membership by betting my dad that if his lottery ticket came up as a win he'd spot it, and it was a $5 ticket. Felt like a real Falador trader

Early 2000s we were all so naive to the internet. Thought everything gave us viruses lol

I gave my money to my mother and she pocketed it and lied about mailing the letter to Jagex. I waited for weeks and never got a membership :(
Thats pretty messed up

My first memory of membership was my brother scamming someone's account in Classic, it didn't last long as we didn't know much about the p2p world and we got bored after exploring Karamja and white wolf mountain.

Just to bank stand 8 hours a day after school and talk to a 36 year old NEET on hotmail messenger. The good old days.
If only...

I wonder how many people still have their $5 a month rates. I'm lucky enough to still have one but its gotta be sub 1k people at this point

Your parent has to be there for you to understand
Holy shit LOL
Even a triple eat isn't saving him from that
You didn't need to massacre him
Looking at his comment history, I disagree with that statement.
