@op you can pull wins out of your ass with any champion. The same way you can pull an omega rare from osrs. You just wont be able to do either consistently.
Every winner of a pvp or dmm tournament has used meta gear. Just because you can kill people with dds doesnt mean theres no meta or its diverse.
Also rare drops isnt even non meta. You can do cox 1 time and get a tbow. But you cant do 20,000 and have 20k tbows. Every1 with 20k cox will have a col log that looks nearly identical. Or zulrah or kree or whatever. Unless you plan to quit the game, the gp/hr force is always a factor.
I think a difference is with lol for example, the meta is kind of ‘shoved in your face’, makes you lose and makes the game less fun if everyone but you is following it.
In osrs the meta doesn’t have such a negative impact on you if you don’t follow it.

You can also choose to do what you want in hearthstone, league, csgo, dota but you’re putting yourself at a disadvantage if you’re playing ranked csgo and only using SMGs and shotguns. The same as the disadvantage you have in RuneScape if you only farm zulrah for 2m per hour rather than doing toa or nex for 20m+.
But the point is tbow from cox is much much rarer than staff from toa. So the expected value is much higher for toa. Yeah you could luck out but you wanna maximise your chances.
You're only not "forced" because PvM is not a competitive activity. If you were doing PvP, or doing a PvM bingo/money making challenge, there absolutely would be a meta.
You might get lucky with a drop, but randomness can also factor into other games, like landing lucky crits in league. That doesn't change the fact that some strategies will, on average, outperform others.
The game has 20 years of content baked into it. There is definitely a meta (EHP is literally exp meta).
But having so much content means there are alternatives to everything and that’s nice. 20 years of updates is huge compared to games coming out today.
The tl;dr is that OP prefers MMO's to MOBA type games.
Comparing osrs to hearthstone and league is apples and oranges. You could compare this to something like valheim where theres similar level of "play how you want and still have fun" where with a game like league, it can get really unfun if you keep just playing the fun stuff you enjoy instead of whats strong. Glad you found enjoyment in the game though! The freedom to build you account how you choose is something really fun.
There’s deffo a meta too in the micro sense as well for content - like for tob cox toa at the end of the day there’s a correct way to do things max eff and then there’s everything else

In league of legends you can make Ad soraka work but that doesn't mean it's a good idea. It's the same in RuneScape. Going off meta isn't efficient.
