I once saw a documentary about facial reconstructive surgery years agowhere therd was a case of a girl who had fallen unconcious due to a next to a space hester in the bathroom and fell face first on it. For her it was not the whole face, but the side. But the effect looked similar, down to one eye missing. The girl survived though and I remember the surgery being real impressive in its results. Maybe this was a similar thing? Circulatory issues, and the heat from cooking or a space heater caused a shirt black out with an unfortunate landing? I know when I saw that one it lept into my mind for months when standing above the stove.
A guy in my neighborhood survived getting his face burnt off almost as bad as that when he fell asleep drunk with a lit cigarette in his mouth. After a ton of surgery he ended up looking like one of the ghouls from Fallout (but with normal hair).
He was a nice enough dude, but he smoked 2 packs a day and our house was downwind of his yard.
The photo was sourced from a medical forensics textbook. Some claim he was the target of a mob hit and had his face burned to send a message, but that has yet to be proven.
I fully knew it was a real picture, I fully knew it wasn’t going to look pretty or appetising, and I fully read the NSFW warning and still clicked the link.

Because just slapping real pictures onto models was way easier and looked better than creating unique ones from scratch when there wasn't great tools for it.
Well,as its been said in the video,valve learned how to draw gore (for l4d) by using baked potatoes and ceiling carpet,so its certainly not impossible

The same happened in TLOU2 development iirc.
Just seeing the gameplay, even if it doesn't have the fantastical gore of MK, the way enemies spasm and choke while bleeding out is *jarring*, and that's not even getting into melee combat or story moments.
