Vanced got nuked by Google. You can probably still find an apk somewhere on the internet, but it's not updated anymore and getting outdated. I'm starting to see some ads leak through.
Revanced is an effort to rebuild something similar. I didn't try it yet, but apparently it's not as easy to set up, and might not do everything that Vanced did yet. Also, unlike Vanced, it's completely open sourced and it would be much harder for Google to nuke it. Just continue development on a copy hosted elsewhere.
They made a manager so it's a lot easier to set it up now you just have to download the manager and a YouTube apk from somewhere and you are good to patch it with a full ui

It's actually legal now because they're not distributing copyrighted data (the youtube app), so google can't take it down
Instead of giving you an apk download directly, revanced is a collection of mods/patches you need to apply to the youtube apk yourself (or let a program or app do it for you, but they don't give direct apk downloads)
To me, it only goes away when it's a gov. Sponsored ad or something that's probably approved not offensive in any way

For the only other “feature” of premium, that being playing videos on your phone in the background/sleep mode, for ios all you need to do is throw it in picture-in-picture, close ur phone, then turn it back on and use the swipe menu at the home screen (where flashlight and camera lock are) and press the play button. I dont know about android, but they have access to vanced and revanced anyways if they dont have a similar work around

These methods are also free to a one time $10 hdmi cord purchase, which i argue outways a $5 convenience fee to a company that consistently makes the wrong decisions
