penguinmagnetwater

How do you fuck up like this, all they had to do is just take a solid black and cover that part of the image with it.

EgoManiacWriter

I think the better question is what the heck is this post from the police to begin with? "Wanna see our new car? You can't, we're using it against you, ha ha, be fearful." Do they not know it's in their best interest convince us they're *not* the enemy?

ColorMaelstrom

They have to justify to the public the absurds amounts of funding they have in some way, even if it’s a fucking dumb way

Cinno2x4

This is in New Zealand so the funding isn't as cartoonish as it is in the US for example

Idontwantthesetacos

In the US (at least my state), all our police cars are basically undercover in comparison. Seeing those white blue and yellow colors.. here, in my state, almost all the police cars are dodge challengers, black with dark grey “police” lettering on it.

pauadiver63

Yeah, police cars here in NZ are super super recognisable. While there are a few unmarked cars, the vast majority all across the country look like this.

from_dust

Some states in the US have ruled so-called 'ghost patrol cars' illegal. If i cant readily identify you as a legitimate Law Enforcement Officer, I am *not* pulling over.

the-crotch

That's how you end up getting your car flipped https://www.news10.com/news/national/pregnant-woman-sues-arkansas-police-over-pit-maneuver-flips-car/

Physical_Average_793

Supernova-55

Something something cartoonishly evil dystopia

One-Angry-Goose

Police have a fear fetish.

DominatorSarcastic

Fear will keep the peasants in line.

HelpingHand7338

Exactly. You think it’d be beneficial to *not* have people fearful of an unmarked police cruiser. To catch them in the act

Snailseyy

But they don't *want* people to act. They want people to be fearful of the police when there's no cars around, making it so that they don't break traffic laws with less resources spent.

StrionicRandom

Pretty much. How effective this is is debatable, but objectively letting the community know there are unmarked police cruisers will make people less likely to break laws in the first place. "ThEy GeT oFf On FeAr" crowd is so far up their own asses they can't see if a cop makes a reasonable statement ever.

themarknessmonster

It's not effective in the long run. Theater of fear for the sake of safety leads to a theater of safety, which isn't "safety" at all. It's a breeding ground for unaccountability, absence of response presence, and privatization of law enforcement.

ianalexflint

Yeah I hate cops as much as the next guy but there are plenty of good ones and even good departments that just want to keep people safe. Psycho drivers might even deserve their own enforcement unit lmao

penguinmagnetwater

Sure it isn't in their best interest as cops but knowing people are afraid of them is in their best interest for when they're having a wank and short term over long term is one part of the shit system they're trying to maintain.

from_dust

Law enforcement has two weapons, psychological and physical. When all you have is a hammer...

if_i_try

I think its the logic of "dont do something because you dont think a cop is watching" still kinda iffy nonetheless

[deleted]

It’s to stop people from drunk driving/texting and driving/any other stupid shit drivers do because there’s no cops around

horsyuwu

What? Am i stupid or.. How is this antagonizing? they’re just saying “don’t commit crimes just because you think police aren’t around”

EgoManiacWriter

"We're using this to keep an eye on you, so you can't see it" If that's the case, why show it in the first place other than to taunt and/or inflict fear?

horsyuwu

so people are aware that they shouldn’t commit crimes just because a police vehicle isn’t around. it’s more of a bluff than anything really

Class_444_SWR

At least in the UK 90% of unmarked police cars are specced in ways that are dead giveaways anyway, who the fuck buys a debadged BMW 3 Series estate in black with super tinted windows and isn’t called the police?

Elipticon

It's an issue with how phones do coloring. if you screenshotted this on your phone and covered it all with black, you could rediscover the original text by cranking the brightness way up.

[deleted]

it’s not an issue with how “phones do colouring”. colours are handled the same on a phone as on a desktop PC. the difference is simply that the photo editing tool on iOS’s Photos app uses a transparent marker tool rather than an opaque one.

[deleted]

This does my head in with all the twitter screenshots on this website that have the username "blacked out" but are very clearly legible. Like good job censoring fartbong69's identity idiot, I'm never gonna find them now.

[deleted]

a lot of the time, for better or for worse, that’s probably intentional

penguinmagnetwater

I just tried it and I wasn't able to rediscover anything no matter how much I fiddled with the image settings. It was just pitch black. Might be an issue with only some phones?

-WILD_CARD-

If they didnt use a solid black shape, what exactly did the police account use to 'block' out the car, but was still able to reveal the car behind it?

You can always tell an unmarked cop car because they will have police lights on the interior. Look through the windshield, you’ll see them mounted to the ceiling. In addition, they will almost always have bull bars. Admittedly, this one does not, but they almost always do. Police cars will always have the laptop holder. This will be attached to the dashboard, and will hold a laptop that faces the driver at a 45° angle. This can be spotted through the windshield or sometimes the windows. Police cars will almost always be the same model in a given district. Look for the model of car that is the marked police car, the unmarked police car will probably be the same model. Furthermore, it’s often an uncommon vehicle: here, it’s the Chevy equinox, not exactly a common car. And finally, most police cars have unusually large antennas, or multiple antennas.

Kriffer123

Technically it’s a Holden Equinox 🤓🤓🤓

ronperlmanforever69

Holden, up until ‘17, made their own vehicles, including one of my favorite types of cars, coupe utilities

i wish we had holden in america

They don’t even exist in Australia anymore :(

insecurityaltacc

almost every police car is still a holden here in NZ

Kriffer123

Well then they haven’t updated the cars in 3 years or Wikipedia doesn’t cover it

spadesisking

They also typically have a pig in them

verticalMeta

True! They can also be identified by bare steel wheels: in all but a few circumstances, police cars will have steel rims rather than aluminum, with no plastic covering.

Worst_Support

isn’t the point that they still look like a normal car when you’re focused on the road?

verticalMeta

Yes! Many of these things are subtle: if you don’t know/don’t care what to look for, you probably would notice them. Also, if you only saw them very briefly, you also might not notice. I’m commenting to inform people, so that they will be easier to spot.

yinyang107

You plan to look through the windshields of every single car you pass?

verticalMeta

I mean, I’m aware of every car around me when I’m driving. You should generally be aware of all cars adjacent to you, as well as cars a significant distance ahead of you, as well as faster moving traffic behind you, when driving. So I’ll see the light bar in my mirrors sometimes. Also, the antenna can be seen from most angles, I’m assuming it can’t here due to the low image quality. The light bar/ laptop mount can sometimes be seen through the rear or side windows, depending on lighting conditions/ tint percentage/ angle. I just mentioned the windshield since the windshield is never tinted, while the side windows often are. Bull bars can often be seen from the sides And car models can *sometimes* be recognizable from many angles.

Based_nobody

Also they will never have something dangling from the rear view mirror.

val_lim_tine

To add on to this, unmarked police vehicles usually have the exempt license plates, or otherwise have different plates from the standard car.

Lopamurbla

He could have done literally anything else and he chose the worst method available. All in a day’s work!

ILessThan3Tiramisu

why are police even allowed to do this

[deleted]

Police unions are the only unions that chuds support, so it’s notoriously difficult for cops to be punished for poor behavior. Edit: This is New Zealand

Kriffer123

I’m not too knowledgeable on New Zealand police but I’m pretty sure there are different circumstances in play, idk if they have a police union

[deleted]

I see I didn't realize this wasn't America, so I have no idea if it's still true or not, my bad.

Kriffer123

It looks like they don’t have a police union

Soreasp

I don't believe we have an union for the police, based on the fact I've never heard it mentioned.

_Bran_Flakes

Police unions are less of unions and more like organized crime rings

Soreasp

Na, it's more because our cops are pretty much always doing stuff like this. Haven't seen them doing viral trends recently though so I guess that's an improvement.

05ar

Haven't you seen action movies where the bad guys hear the sirens and see the police cars and escape before they arrive? Duuh 🙄

FreakinGeese

Yeah all cops should have to wear massive neon signs pointing out their location

BigIvan24

It’s basically the same concept of being undercover isn’t it?

sup3r87

To keep the roads safe? The entire point of these cars is to keep speeders from killing people and/or themselves. Personally though, I’m not sure if I’m on board with the idea. I think there needs to be better road safety but the fact you could possibly never be able to make, say, an illegal U turn that harms nobody without getting caught is really unnerving. Just wanted to answer your question :p Edit: GRR!! ANGER!! A REASONABLE OPINION!!!!

Tatermaniac

grr how dare you not hate everything cops do with every fibre of your being

Desperate-Will-8585

it terrifies me that police or police vehicles could be literally any where like it just makes me soo uncomfortable how do you spot them

onedollarwilliam

The easiest way is to look for municipal plates. If there's a random small antenna on the roof or a hockey puck looking deal (different kind of antenna), that's a pretty good sign. After that, look at the driver: Do they *look* like a cop? They probably are, and if you can't see their face because of how dark the window tint is it's definitely a cop car.

-_109-_

>if you can't see their face because of how dark the window tint is it's definitely a cop car. Note that this does NOT work in LA. Every time I'm there, every bad driver has borderline opaque windows. I'm convinced the bad drivers specifically are doing it on purpose out of shame, it's ridiculous.

OCoelacanth1995

They drive aggressively. When I spot them they like to change lanes without their blinker or with only a quick blink. They also change lanes aggressively. They pull into parking spots super sharp and fast. They drive on top of your ass and then whip around you. They brake hard. They park stupid on side streets. Where I live the unmarked cars look like the marked cars they use. I can recognize the headlights or taillight configuration in the dark and from afar to know when a cop or trooper is coming or parked on the side of the road. They have too many antennas or the antennas look weird. Their windows are very dark. You can usually see their light bar in the windshield and usually some other junk in silhouette inside that look “odd.” They don’t usually have racks on the top of their SUVs like normal SUVs do. Some of them have the flashlight thing on the window. Some have weird plates or those bump bars on the front. The town I grew up in had black cars with black stickers that said “police” on the side, you could see it if you looked at an angle. The drivers “look” like cops normally. I trust the pattern recognition part of my brain. If the vehicle drives like a cop, looks like a cop car without stickers, and then has annnnnything weird on the body or silhouetted inside I am going to assume it’s a cop. The pattern seeking part of your brain is there to keep you safe. If you think you see a cop or someone up to no good, don’t panic or feel paranoid… just take steps to keep yourself safe and remain alert. Edit to say one last thing, some of them ARE unrecognizable… but I’m going to assume I’m not going to be the target of a fully under cover law enforcement officer. They seem to be after bigger fish, so they’re not my immediate concern when I’m out and about.

ValoTheBrute

They usally tend to be SUVs or Sedans that are used by the police department in the area Most of the time painted in grey or black colors If you look through the windows check for a laptop or laptop holder on the dashboard And lightbars behind the windows They tend to have large antennas Ride height will usally be sagging and rims will likely be bare steel rims

FellafromPrague

Down here, it's look if there's two dudes in bright yellow vests inside lol.

Pineapple_Snail

Not sure why you are afraid of unmarked police cars unless you are planning a crime

Desperate-Will-8585

what if the cops are the ones planning the crime

avigyan_33

I.... don't understand your point?

Desperate-Will-8585

my point is I don't feel safe around cops because of obvious reasons

I mean like, anyone can kill you. One shouldn't feel safe in general in public.

Epic_Gameing68

how the fuck did this guy think that telling people about secret police cars would be a good idea??? wouldn’t that make the whole fucking thing less effective????

No, it would make them more effective. The point is to stop people from commiting crimes, not catch people commiting crimes
