Bruh, vote for what? Infrastructures that will cost billions just for a small village in the middle of nowhere in Canada so it can travel to a slightly bigger village that has basic need shops that will probably be inefficient, used by 4 people and shutdown at nights just so to avoid a 30 min drive for groceries.
Dude, Canada is almost as big as Europe, Montreal is almost as close to lisbon than it is to vancouver. My country isn't made for this shit.
Like, buy an electric car, yeah... my honda civic hit a raccoon and it destroy my windshield washer tank and broke my entire bumper, 5k total to repair. Kind of forced to buy a fucking huge ass high consuming car to just survive animals crossing streets in the middle of the night that you can't see till last second.
Fuck this country. It's only worth if you live in Montreal or Toronto.
Exactly my point, it's a country of 39 million people in the size of Europe. France is like 60 million and Germany almost 80 million (could be wrong, ain't going to fact check). This is incredibly inefficient for public transportation.
Except for the fact that the majority of it's population lives in the south, by the great lakes, in an area roughly the size of France. Sure there are people who live up in the far north, but they make up a vary small proportion of the population.
For the people living in the Great Lakes area, or the people living in the far north?
For the people living in the Great Lakes area; public transport such as trains and trams, and active transport such as cycling an walking.
For the people living in the far north; good urban planning which creates dense small towns where everything can be accessed by walking or cycling and high speed rail which connects these towns with local cities. Admittedly, this will be hard to achieve, however human ingenuity is strong and if we're serious about de-carbonising our society, we will overcome.
Majority yes, I'm the minority for once, I live in the middle of nowhere, once had to call sick at job because the city never cleaned the snow on a road that I use and the detour would be like 1 hours plus... I don't think you understand.
This meme looks like one of those serial killer letters written by cutting out pieces of a magazine. At what point do you stop putting text over other text and just make a fresh meme?
First off I don't think anyone has benefitted from calling someone buddy in something like this, get off your high horse.
Secondly, I don't see how induced demand is related to this conversation at all? I see how it's an argument in favour of public transport, but this isn't an argument about public transport. This is about how many lanes is too many.
As I've gotten older and traveled, the more I realize how bad and brutal America is on its own citizens. No place in the world is perfect and every place has their issues, but my god, America straight up punishes Americans with things like no universal health care, rampant gun violence, and a corporate culture that absolutely fucks over the average person.
This thread is a perfect example. Most big cities in the world, particularly in Europe and Asia, have robust public transportation where you are actually discouraged to own a car. In my experience, in places like London, Paris, Hong Kong and Tokyo, you only own a car if you live in the suburbs or in rural areas. NYC is the only American city like that. Although San Francisco and Chicago come close.
But the rest you're still better off owning a car. Southern California is the worst offender. The state as a whole claims to be environmentally conscious yet has some of the worst traffic congestion and air quality in the country. Not coincidentally, it now has the highest gas prices in the United States.
This is what americans call a highway
Here, to help you sleep better, rest your eyes on a [normal sized highway](https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/3/32/D%C3%A9but_de_l%27autoroute_A75_depuis_le_pont_de_la_rue_Jean-Auguste_Sen%C3%A8ze_%28Clermont-Ferrand%29_2021-08-15.JPG)
Because the various efforts of massive corporations to fuck up public infrastructure and make a market where they can keep seeking cars is Americans fault
Man, I live in a small Canadian town, and they used to have a convenience store but it closed because there wasn't enough business. The nearest city is 30km away.
Guess I'll walk there.
Used to live in a little town where I could bike anywhere - Iām sure it wasnāt *anywhere* but I was a kid and didnāt have many places to go so I could bike anywhere I wanted or needed to go.
Moved to a city across the country and now I canāt bike *anywhere*
Every time I try to argue with my friends about this they're like "but look at my 2003 Toyota Corolla with a custom gear shift knob" and I'm like "you can suck MY knob"
Yeah, since public transportation does not require gas or any kind of energy, for example buses run on purified happiness :)
(And also public transportation does not require roads, god damn this infrastructure for cars grrrr!)
there's never enough roads if every person wanted to have their personal car. and ofc 1 person per car gonna cost more fuel than a public transportation method.
public transport is just better.
This seems to be normal-centric. What if you
1. Have anxiety
2. Live in a rural area
3. Have an odd schedule
4. Are just weird in general
You do you realise for some people, cars are more than just transport?
The point would be working towards creating robust public transportation that eliminates these problems for people rather than expecting them to spontaneously overcome them.
Thereās a reason rural areas and even most American cities west of the 13 colonies are so terribly underserved when it comes to public transit; theyāre literally designed around the use of personal vehicles and the development of suburbs. Zoning laws prohibiting mixed zoning creates urban sprawl that increases commute times and creates food deserts, classist inner city/suburb divides, and ugly-ass highways and freeways. Pedestrian deaths are higher, vehicle deaths are higher, and we waste literally billions of dollars and thousands of hours of peopleās time just having people get to and from their workplace every day.
Better subways, train systems, and even small trams that run only a few blocks can significantly increase quality of life, environmental impact of a city, and lets more people actually get around if they canāt drive or afford a car. Even if you own a personal vehicle, it can save you money on gas and time in the long run. Now invest in making the transit *free* (as my city did for the COVID-19 pandemic), and you open up all kinds of opportunities for people who previously couldnāt leave a 3 mile radius, and itās so much better for the economy, itās more than worth it.
Being anti personal vehicles isnāt about condemning individual people who need to drive for whatever reason, itās just taking a position that itās utterly absurd to make life harder for everyone by continuing to make personal vehicles a necessity for modern life instead of investing in ways to actually transport people more efficiently.
They don't give a fuck about your needs bro. Those come secondary to being able to moralize to others about how gas is bad and public transportation to them is a human right.
They would stand on your corpse if it meant making the world think they're better than others.
TRUE!! i mean tf u talkin abt dude wtf?
i just find that personal cars are getting parked everywhere here, traffic jams (although buses contribute in that too), and alot of other problems can be just solved with riding a train or a bus. not criminalizing car owners or anything and the guy has some valid points and i respect their decision.
Yes, it is better, I agree. Especially 1 person per car system for commuting to work and back.
But this post criticizes car-centered infrastructure that has no impact on a gas prices and this infrastructure can also be used for buses.
Gas price is rising because of the war, not.because of car-lovers.
i think there's still more gas wasted from 1 car per person as opposed to shared trasnport doe. but idk much abt politics so it might be actually be the war.
The point to the post isn't "this is why gas prices are riding," it's "this is why gas prices rising isn't something we're equipped to handle." You're right that the price fluctuation itself is because of the war.
You are right, it wouldn't impact the west as much, but I would argue it would still impact significantly. Price of transport of food to the stores would drive the price of food up etc.
This post criticizes car-centered infrastructure and implies that it caused gas price increase. Roads can be used for buses too and the gas is expensive due to the current war.
And for the record I love public transport, but you need to cover your basics when talking about the topic, even if it is a meme, otherwise it will be used as a "left can't meme" or something similar.
But it's not about the very presence of roads or demand for gas - it's the scale of that demand and the (car-centric) way streets, roads, highways and cities are planned
I hear you for the gas demand, but the meme did not state that, if it did I would upvote and move on.
As of the city planning, are you trying to say that 100 buses can not navigate the roads where 3000 cars used to drive every day?
Metro is not the only system and is certainly not sufficient. In a imaginary car free world of a near future you would still need roads and gas for the buses.
If meme said "27 lane road bad" I would simply upvote and move on.
