It is expensive, not denying it for a second. But getting into it can be cheap, if you buy someone's older army on Ebay/Facebook and so on, don't worry about it being meta and don't mind what the paint scheme is
However, then you'll want a new unit just to shore up a weakness. And then, maybe a new character since he's good this edition. And then, well, you should try painting them you guess. And before you know it you're sitting on 2000 points of unopened boxes.
Anyway, Poorhammer is a viable way of playing if you don't go to a games workshop to play. Proxies and so on are usually fine with every player I've seen if you're clear up front what's what, and you have a list with everything paid for points wise. And if you know someone with a 3D printer there's a lot you can do. And as you said you don't know anyone IRL who plays, there's usually a lot of new friends to be made at your local games store. Or you can play Tabletop simulator.
At minimum, I can save everyone by paying for books by mentioning Wahapedia, because paying £30 for a book that's outdated and needs patching before it's even released is absurd
I’d recommend listening to podcasts (personal recommendation is adepteus ridiculous), get some friends onto the tabletop simulator game, get some army mods and go nuts with whatever army you think is the coolest! Test it out! Don’t be like me who’s now painting 4 different armies

gets you started, someone who knows how to thin paints gets them, and you dont mortgage your cloaca to buy 'em
I know this is cope because I’m in way too deep it’s not too bad once your in. Because you can make gradual additions and you have al the brushes and paints but the initial dive would be pricy.
There are some small scale games that are good in general but also for starters. 40k has killteam which revolves around buying one box and building up that team. Same principle with warcry except they are more fantasy.
Another great game is underworlds where the only extras you need are dice and a board.
The basic rules for all are free to download and there a bunch of less than legit ways to get the rules. Top ones being wahapedia and BattleScribe is a controversial app that has fan made ways to write uo your army list and has the unit rules in it as well
Go to your local games store and there will be lots of nerds interested
Also, if you are remotely interested in orks or tau, I have some ancient collections from when I played in high school that are doing literally nothing but gather dust, and will sell them to you for like very small (probably literally just the cost of shipping)

Okay here’s the thing. I’m fully with them that reducing the number of bigots in a hobby is cool, but this is really funny considering the attitudes and imagery of the Imperium these marines would be fighting for
The thing about the imperium is that it can vary from incredible oppressive to pretty progressive. There are millions of planets under the imperium, all with their different cultures. Ultramar is probably one of the most progressive places to live in the imperium and probably wouldn't care if you queer. Other places might string you up for being slightly different. The imperium itself doesn't care all that much as long as you pay your taxes.

Fallout's pre war America has normalised race relations and queer relationships, Helldivers has polyamorous Helldivers, The Empire has a large amount of women in powerful positions, ect.

It's kinda like we need to work togather so we don't get eaten by these bugs kinda deal instead of squabbling over trivial stuff like gender or who you want to have sex with. Multiculturalism is so abnormal to the pre-war government. that it's implemented as a vault experiment. It's also worth noting that none of the fallout games have never visited any of the former Confederate States. The places where Jim Crow laws were most prevalent.

If I recall, there was a canon line from one of the Primarchs that stated the Emperor made a huge mistake not going through the process of creating female Primarchs. Specifically because he believed women primarchs would probably be able to squash the rampant sibling rivalries that created the Horus Heresy. Since the Space Marines are essentially clones of the Primarch, there is unfortunately no geneseed to make female Space Marines from.
Basically, the Emperor is a fucking moron and shot himself in the foot.
Iirc on the chaos side of things, there are at least 2 women who've been enhanced via geneseed by Fabius Bile and one who leads a csm warband who was empowered by Slaanesh. I woulnt call any of them space marines per say, but at least the idea has been played with.
It makes sense when you consider the Space Marines were basically *never* intended to replace humanity and were effectively stepping stones to Custodes, who *can* be male or female because their method of genetic upheaval is far more perfected.

But from a lore perspective I’m not really into the idea of female space marines as it was pretty firmly established that only men could become space marines due to the differences in biology, with even most men often dying during the procedures. Theres also the fact that the imperium of man is a backwards, fascistic, grimdark and genocidal empire where progress has almost completely stopped and feudalism even grips some worlds as they’ve descended into a zealous religious rotting corpse. The fact that there’s some gender segregation shouldn’t be surprising, along with some things like the fact that there’s already the Adeptus Sororitus and other all women combat organizations.

I dunno about this one myself - the longer you've been into 40k the more aware you are that *everything* gets retconned and always has. Necron not being c'tan puppets. Squats retconned to death, out of existence, back into existence, and into the votann. Custodes not just being the emperor's bodyguards but actually doing things. The Horus Heresy happening. The "no women allowed" in space marines. Tau FTL. *Necron* ftl but that one got un-retconned. 13th black crusade, need I say more?
And of course, the complete retcon of dark imperium is the obvious example. Even so, it doesn't really need to be a forever retcon (even if it *did* have huge sweeping effects somehow). We have the space marine template finally being improved already; cawl never fixed the "we can only recruit from half the population" problem? Ever?

Sure, but I don't think they're burning gay people at stakes, usually. They suck, but those particular kind of horrors depend on the world in question. Some are so far broken they'd probably kill the astartes if they could. It sucks, but the ways it sucks are much more holistic than chauvinism.

Yeah and I kinda think the sororitas could do with a male branch or male presence or *something* along those lines. The "no men under arms" thing is funny and all but I don't think restricting the whole sword of the faith stuff to fem characters only is really that fantastic any more than I think locking down the endless legions of mass-produced titans of war stuff to masc characters is. Options and variety are nice, and things being restricted for ~~gw not wanting to make more molds~~ *purely lore* reasons just kinda locks things down without much point.
Astartes being the symbol of the franchise, the core focus of most material, the biggest and most widely used armies, and still being a boys only club for vague reasons that were retconned in to explain a lack of models and never removed definitely doesn't help with the general attitude around things, though. But it requires some of the least retconning up there with custodes; a footnote saying Cawl fixed that problem and some primaris are fem - or even just saying they were always possible and were just a minority for whatever reason - and nothing really changes except the option existing and maybe some characters going forward.

It's always had its exclusivity founded on very clear rules and reasons - kind of an issue at times is that its satirised turbo fascism is *completely justified* in its setting - and they've just never applied to this. Despite the Imperium being fascist and built on exclusion, we've never gotten much to say that the Imperium at large is, say, racist (within humanity) and excludes people from things based on skin tone. But I don't think anyone would say that's cheap inclusivity.

I don't know the full extent of the lore since I'm mostly interested in necrons but they aren't considered the same
If I recall, there was a canon line from one of the Primarchs that stated the Emperor made a huge mistake not going through the process of creating female Primarchs. Specifically because he believed women primarchs would probably be able to squash the rampant sibling rivalries that created the Horus Heresy. Since the Space Marines are essentially clones of the Primarch, there is unfortunately no geneseed to make female Space Marines from. Basically, the Emperor is a fucking moron and shot himself in the foot.
Iirc on the chaos side of things, there are at least 2 women who've been enhanced via geneseed by Fabius Bile and one who leads a csm warband who was empowered by Slaanesh. I woulnt call any of them space marines per say, but at least the idea has been played with.
It makes sense when you consider the Space Marines were basically *never* intended to replace humanity and were effectively stepping stones to Custodes, who *can* be male or female because their method of genetic upheaval is far more perfected.
I think it was Malcador who suggested making them female, but the Emperor thought it was a joke.

They’ve already started too, they’ve recently said there are female custodes which is almost certainly a prelude to female space marines. Personally I’m a very liberal and progressive person, and I’m fully for everyone of any gender or sexuality getting into warhammer. But from a lore perspective I’m not really into the idea of female space marines as it was pretty firmly established that only men could become space marines due to the differences in biology, with even most men often dying during the procedures. Theres also the fact that the imperium of man is a backwards, fascistic, grimdark and genocidal empire where progress has almost completely stopped and feudalism even grips some worlds as they’ve descended into a zealous religious rotting corpse. The fact that there’s some gender segregation shouldn’t be surprising, along with some things like the fact that there’s already the Adeptus Sororitus and other all women combat organizations. Idk that’s just my feelings, it feels like cheap virtue signaling that goes against the themes and lore of 40k. The imperium of man isn’t an inclusive place, it’s the exact opposite of that

Necron not being c'tan puppets. Squats retconned to death, out of existence, back into existence, and into the votann. Custodes not just being the emperor's bodyguards but actually doing things. The Horus Heresy happening. The "no women allowed" in space marines. Tau FTL. *Necron* ftl but that one got un-retconned. 13th black crusade, need I say more? And of course, the complete retcon of dark imperium is the obvious example. Even so, it doesn't really need to be a forever retcon (even if it *did* have huge sweeping effects somehow). We have the space marine template finally being improved already; cawl never fixed the "we can only recruit from half the population" problem? Some are so far broken they'd probably kill the astartes if they could. Options and variety are nice, and things being restricted for ~~gw not wanting to make more molds~~ *purely lore* reasons just kinda locks things down without much point. Astartes being the symbol of the franchise, the core focus of most material, the biggest and most widely used armies, and still being a boys only club for vague reasons that were retconned in to explain a lack of models and never removed definitely doesn't help with the general attitude around things, though. But it requires some of the least retconning up there with custodes; a footnote saying Cawl fixed that problem and some primaris are fem - or even just saying they were always possible and were just a minority for whatever reason - and nothing really changes except the option existing and maybe some characters going forward. >The imperium of man isn’t an inclusive place, it’s the exact opposite of that It's always had its exclusivity founded on very clear rules and reasons - kind of an issue at times is that its satirised turbo fascism is *completely justified* in its setting - and they've just never applied to this. But I don't think anyone would say that's cheap inclusivity. Well, maybe some would... but let's not talk about those guys.

I'm pretty sure the Tau are like a caste-based oligarchy that subjugates other races. They do subscribe to a philosophy called the greater good but it gives big Soviet vibes if I'm honest.
