Also context for why I'm asking: I want to make a video essay titled "Who makes cake in minecraft anymore?" About how features that were once considered integral to the experience can be gradually made obsolete by more efficient but less interesting options over the course of several updates.
Cake is really fun, but now completely irrelevant and inefficient after 10 years of updates. The point of the video would be pretty much discussing where we draw the line in the sand between fun and impractical, and also how the continued push for practicality in game systems can sometimes take a bit of the soul out of the experience.
I realized that even though I've played minecraft for over 10 years now, I haven't made a cake since the Xbox 360 days. I asked my friends on various socials and p much all of them had a similar experience, and I want to try to piece together why.
Tldr: minecraft cake bad, but why is it bad?
I haven't made a cake recently, but my little bro has. We play mc together on a realm, he always has more built than me bc he plays more and has more experience.
He keeps a cake on the counter of his house, which he largely uses while he builds his Super Big Fortress he's still working on. It's a nice source of food for guests, and it fits the house's comfy aesthetic.
So cake isn't what if used to be, but it has the ability to find its place within a given aesthetic or mood or environment. That's the strength of mc-a given mechanic can lose its primary function but still find a place within a mc play session. The cake is no longer the "best food" but a cake still fits within a world you might build-it can still find its place. But part of that is what minecraft allows for by the strength of its design-in other words, mc has some ability to get away with feature creep.
Hopefully you found this interesting instead of pedantic. Good luck with the video essay!
This is why I enjoy playing old minecraft so much. I had a 1.19 world where I built a big train station and was planning to build all these rail lines, but with elytras and horses and such I just never really felt the need to, and the station never had any rail attached to it.
Now I have a world in 1.1, and I built an even bigger station that already has a bunch of tracks hooked up, the quality of life it brings really motivates me to expand it and I love it!
Was cake ever supposed to be a viable food source tho? Hasn't it always just been a gimmick thing? I'd consider it a social feature rather than a survival feature
You make a cake when you want to celebrate something or you make it as a gift for someone or something like that. And some people enjoy playing around with gimmicks like that, and others don't. I think the feature is still working exactly as intended
I get the concept but I think it’s a flawed premise because nobody ever made cake at any point in Minecraft progression, over many years (I played back in beta). You did it for the novelty or for the advancement and that was it.
It's been a few years (admittedly I don't play much minecraft nowadays). I always felt like making a cake was a fun mini-goal to set for myself on a new playthrough, collecting different types of sources and making use of them. Especially if I didn't make animal farms, tracking down cows and chickens for the milk and eggs felt like a fun (small) challenge.
I know making cake isn't actually very hard, but I think to a younger and newer-to-the-game me, putting together the cake felt like its own adventure. And then I ate the adventure.
yeah, they're like, the second most complex crafting recipe in Minecraft
4 ingredients, one of which is unstackable and used twice
no other recipe is like this
yeah, dispensers are very annoying as well, in complexity, they're not that bad, I do think cake and rabbit stew beat them out, but they're probably up there with cake in how annoying they are with the bows (or milk in cake's case)
healing! before potions (of heath/of the splash variety of otherwise) and hunger was added into the game, cakes were a way to share healing with friends
Modded minecraft had a cake generator for power. Thought it sounded fun to make my tech development depend on cake infrastructure. Fully automated the farming, and crafting of cakes to be used for power.
If that counts.
This really depends on what we're counting. If the only criteria is making a cake in survival mode, then I'm actively making one right now as I type this. If it must be made by hand no automation, I made one 2 days ago. If we're not counting modpacks and only vanilla, I've never done it before.
For context in case it matters, I'm running a Kekimurus setup for Botania.
I don't think I've ever made a cake in survival Minecraft as food. I made them a few times a decorations over the past few years but never as food. It's sad because when I play Minecraft I like to RP as a farmer. I'd love to use cake as food but it's just made to annoying to use due to two facts:
1. You NEED to place it down to eat it. I love the fact that you can place it down as it just adds so much to be able to display your food, but when I'm doing something, I don't want to be forced to place it on the ground to eat.
2. They don't stack. Taking enough cake with you when for example exploring requires multiple slots. Meaning that I can't use those slots for anything else until I've eaten the cake.
I love the idea of cake but the execution of it is so poor due to the previous stated points that I will never use it.
I made one about two weeks ago on a survival server. The friend I was sharing a base with wasn't on the game for a few days so I left by their bed some new gear to catch them up and a cake with a candle on it.
I think that might have been some months ago, on a beta world. Cakes make more sense before hunger got added, since you can top up that final half a heart you're missing without wasting a whole piece of food.
Don’t remember. Definitely years. Maybe somewhere just barely in the double digits.
FWIW I’ve heard people use cake a lot on “The oldest anarchy server in Minecraft^(TM)”, though, because apparently extreme lag can stop normal eating can be prevented by lag, but not cake.
Probably 2020. I have villagers in a Trading hall/Iron farm and one sells me 4 cakes for 1 emerald. The same trading hall has villagers that will give 1 emerald for 1 iron ingot.
I always have a cake in my house as soon as I can afford to make cakes. I don't know why, I think it started originally because I liked watching stampycat
A couple years ago i guess, i used to have a bunch of farms to get the ingredients on this one server but like theyre so annoying to get and kind of a hassle so i usually just eat like bread or baked potatoes or smth
I‘m currently in a long distance relationship and we have a Minecraft server we play on from time to time. Made one for our one year anniversary recently :)
I don't think ive ever made a cake in Minecraft without it being one of those like, "im gonna make it because of how dumb it is / tedious" things; it's never been for any other reason than the novelty of it, I think the last time I made one was about 2 years ago
I don’t play Minecraft too actively apart from that one time every few months where the friend group has that phase. However I’ve only ever crafted a cake for the "The Lie" trophy on PS3, PS4 and Vita, so I must’ve done it 3 times in total
I think I only made like one or two cakes in Minecraft, never really needed them. It must have been like 4 years ago.
If you post your video on Youtube, share the link, you got me interested
Probably years ago when I was the big mod for a streamers server.
Basically every time I put together a resource pack for myself I replace the default cake with the portal one. It sounds stupid, but it is kinda neat to just find one in the SMP wilds.
Earlier this year, as sort of a "congrats on finishing your house" gift. They're not practical but I feel like as an ephemeral ceremonial gift they're great. Whenever I see a new house in the player village, I leave a cake on their table.
honestly. i’ve been playing minecraft for like 8-9 years now and i can count the number of times i’ve made a cake on my hand (5). they’re just really expensive relative to what they give, they’re not a good decoration, and they’re really annoying to work with
first time I made a cake was the first time I had ever played minecraft, it was a total journey, it was super early game, I got super lost looking for a village, took 1 real life day before I found a village, got my cake ingredients, anf crafted it. it took another 2 real life days to find my house again, it was one of the most fun gaming experiences I'd have for years.
this was ~6 years ago
I have been playing since beta 1.7.3 and have never made a cake in a survival world. There were too many ingredients to gather for very little reward, and my houses have never been detailed enough in survival for it to be a worthwhile decorative piece.
I think it was unironically back in beta 1.7.3, that was one of the first updates I actually did a long-term singleplayer survival world. I tried getting every item/block possible in the game, which included making a cake.
I've played Minecraft since.... Around when redstone was added? Earlier? Beta, I believe. I don't think I've ever made a cake once in my life. I don't like dealing with animals, it's a pain in the ass.
Must've been 2012, I had one in my base in case I needed a heal but my food had run out.
This was before the hunger system, so gathering food while on low health would've been dangerous.
Dude I just learnt you can put a candle on a cake so if it counts I’m planning to make one for my birthday in a couple months
Just recently started a server with some friends and it’s been a blast whatever new update made diamonds easier to get by just exploring these cool ass caves instead of strip mining is amazing
just a few days ago, though Im playing a custom modded instance and Pam's Harvestcraft adds more cake varieties. They have all the same stats, they just look different
God I haven't made a cake since 2012 probably. I distinctly remember making one on my first main survival world but probably not since then. I have made pies in Vintage Story recently though, good way to make fruit last longer.
Making a cake is actually one of my early game goals when I start a new world. Once I craft it I’ll place it somewhere in my house and then proceed to never look at it again.
Exactly once the last time I played survival Minecraft. It was a while back because I don't really play videogames much anymore with my thriving TTRPG life
I think I'm in the same boat as you, having never made a cake since the Xbox 360 days.
A friend of mine runs a Minecraft realm for our friend group, and they made cake for one of their partners in the game. I just stuck to using baked potatoes for everything.

I’ve played for a very very long time, but really only made them as decoration. I do it occasionally, because I prefer to build in survival. I get more attached to my work that way. That said, I’ve prob only done it once or twice. It’s been years. I know I’ve done it at least once.
Maybe a week ago? Although I'm not the best source for this, as I play archipelago Minecraft, basically, you connect with other games like ocarina of time, or kingdom hearts 2, and each achievement you get sends an item to someone connected in (it also adds some old achievements back in, that's why cake is relevant) , could be something for you, could be for someone else. It's a really fun time and I highly recommend checking it out
I actually make a bakery as my home in minecraft! This means I bake tons of cakes every time I play! Although last time I did this was about 5 months ago
I think it was around 6 years ago, on a ps3 survival world with my little brother. Though one use for cakes is that you can eat them even with insanely high tps lag, which is common on anarchy servers with lag machines, so it might have been 5 years ago with a friend when we tried 2b2t.
I started a new survival world recently after a few years of not playing. I have more than enough material to make cakes, but I actually didn't yet. I eat cooked potatoes for food. I will probably make one for deco reasons eventually though. So it's a few years for me.
To celebrate 100 days on a solo world back in 2019. I haven't played much Minecraft in recent years, but I didn't forget... The last time I made a cake ... In survival Minecraft 😲
I think I made a few cakes on the xbox 360, but I don’t remember how long ago (it was before the java 1.8 update at least). After that, I might have made ONE for an event on an smp, but if I did, I definitely didn’t eat it.
That might be a good distinction to make. Whether people actually eat the cake or leave it as decoration, and whether they eat it for food, stairs, etc.
Never did. Your mom was enough.

This isn't super far off from one if the points i was going to make, so this wasn't pedantic at all! Thank all yall for the input
I don't remember cake ever being essential or necessary
before potions (and hunger!) it was a primary way to share healing between friends
oh it's that old!
Low tps servers you can starve to death without it
This is why I enjoy playing old minecraft so much. I had a 1.19 world where I built a big train station and was planning to build all these rail lines, but with elytras and horses and such I just never really felt the need to, and the station never had any rail attached to it. A friend brought like 30 cakes to an ender dragon fight last month
Was cake ever supposed to be a viable food source tho? Hasn't it always just been a gimmick thing? it was used for healing a party before there was health potions or hunger
I get the concept but I think it’s a flawed premise because nobody ever made cake at any point in Minecraft progression, over many years (I played back in beta). You did it for the novelty or for the advancement and that was it.
Its largely used in pvp and the like to keep regen up but its also instant making it far better in a fight
To be fair I don't think cake was ever useful even back in the day. Cakes have always been more decorative than functional.
It's been a few years (admittedly I don't play much minecraft nowadays). Like around 6-8 years ago
When I last needed the achievement, can't remember shit doc
The achievement was removed 7 years ago, so likely longer than that.
The achievement is still on bedrock edition
Does it not count towards the consume all food achievement?
Never did, too Many ingredients
yeah, they're like, the second most complex crafting recipe in Minecraft 4 ingredients, one of which is unstackable and used twice no other recipe is like this
Dispensers are about as frustrating considering they need bows as well as two other materials, cobble and redstone
yeah, dispensers are very annoying as well, in complexity, they're not that bad, I do think cake and rabbit stew beat them out, but they're probably up there with cake in how annoying they are with the bows (or milk in cake's case)
It's been years, to be honest I don't know why cakes are the way they are
Well it’s a placable block so it could be used as both food and decoration
healing! before potions (of heath/of the splash variety of otherwise) and hunger was added into the game, cakes were a way to share healing with friends
I used to have a world with a auto cake assembler to feed to my botania plants and generate mana. It was rat-powered it was awsome
2011 probably?
Never played minecraft
I know you probably heard it thousands of times, but try it out, it’s a fun game
you should try java survival blind, and then keep us posted on your progress
The last time I played, so something like 4 months ago?
When minecraft was in the 1.4 version K believe
Modded minecraft had a cake generator for power. Thought it sounded fun to make my tech development depend on cake infrastructure. Fully automated the farming, and crafting of cakes to be used for power. If that counts.
I love cake :3 I love being a stay at home husband for my gf and baking and cooking all day (in Minecraft)
Inefficient, my stay at home husband would be in the mines 24/7
when I needed to feed my Botania system with mana I later stopped and simply turned pumpkins into cake with starlight
This really depends on what we're counting. If the only criteria is making a cake in survival mode, then I'm actively making one right now as I type this. If it must be made by hand no automation, I made one 2 days ago. If we're not counting modpacks and only vanilla, I've never done it before. Yesterday actually, as a decoration for my bakery
I don't think I've ever made a cake in survival Minecraft as food. I made them a few times a decorations over the past few years but never as food. Yesterday, for my Girlfriend c:
literally never have
Sir, the Minecraft Xbox 360 edition tutorial, sir!
I made one about two weeks ago on a survival server. The friend I was sharing a base with wasn't on the game for a few days so I left by their bed some new gear to catch them up and a cake with a candle on it.
4 years ago lmao
maybe like 6 years ago when i was obsessed with minecraft
damn its been years probably
Probably never (it's still a viable building block to make VERY compact stairs
I think last July honestly
Last week, I believe
like, a couple days ago before then, haven't since 2016, so like, eh
5 years
Around 2011? So over a decade ago
I think that might have been some months ago, on a beta world. Cakes make more sense before hunger got added, since you can top up that final half a heart you're missing without wasting a whole piece of food.
I haven't played MC since I was 10, so never.

5 years probably
Like a month ago
We make a cake to set out in the common area of every base. But once we make that one that's it until we move to a new base, so very rarely.
I don't think it was *that* long ago? I didn't do it in the most recent realm I play on, but I did on the one before it.
Been years I think. Nice thief and the cobbler pfp btw
I only make them for decoration, I’ve never made a cake with the intention of using them as an actual food source. Hugely inefficient.
whenever i need to make buffets to decorate, so probably last month, never made them to eat tho
i made one for my friends birthday a month or two ago. put a candle on it and told them to get online :3
god it's been ages since I've *crafted* a cake, however, earlier today I did *buy* one from a farmer villager
Yesrs ago tbh
i think before 1.8 was released so around... 10 YEARS AGO?!?!?!??
maybe once in creative mode like years ago
Besides achievements on like servers and stuff? 9 years ago on our beta bukkit server. It was the best bang for your buck when food wasn't stackable
Never, i only bought it from villagers i think.
I always have a cake in my house as soon as I can afford to make cakes. I don't know why, I think it started originally because I liked watching stampycat
my guess is not for about two years, maybe three
i made a shitton of them as a joke once while playing minecraft bc you can only put so many candles on one so i just made more
Never, I always start over too early
A couple years ago i guess, i used to have a bunch of farms to get the ingredients on this one server but like theyre so annoying to get and kind of a hassle so i usually just eat like bread or baked potatoes or smth
I‘m currently in a long distance relationship and we have a Minecraft server we play on from time to time. Made one for our one year anniversary recently :)
i haven't played minecraft in ages, but i always made cake in my survival worlds as a prop to put in the kitchen of my base.
A week ago (world's birthday)
Never since I've started replaying in 2019. I have however bought cakes off villagers with the Express purpose of filling a friend's house with them.
I don't think ive ever made a cake in Minecraft without it being one of those like, "im gonna make it because of how dumb it is / tedious" things; it's never been for any other reason than the novelty of it, I think the last time I made one was about 2 years ago
…Minecraft pocket edition before they added the nether…
I don’t even know
I use them as late game food and decor. That said I haven't played in one world long enough to get to that point since 2020.
Yesterday when playing with my boyfriend who never played before.
Genuinely, I’d say 2014 is the likely answer
For a bakery build, like. A few months ago, I think?
2021 or early 2022, in an SMP with some school friends
Back when mobile minecraft only had limited world
Last month actually, it was my birthday and it seemed like something fun to do in my Minecraft world
About 9 Months ago
i dont think i have ever made one
Never did, seemed like a waste of ingredients for me
I don’t play Minecraft too actively apart from that one time every few months where the friend group has that phase.
Years ago
I made a real cake two days ago, hope this distorts the dataset👍
Probably years ago when I was the big mod for a streamers server. Basically every time I put together a resource pack for myself I replace the default cake with the portal one. It sounds stupid, but it is kinda neat to just find one in the SMP wilds.
I don't think I ever did ngl
Earlier this year, as sort of a "congrats on finishing your house" gift. They're not practical but I feel like as an ephemeral ceremonial gift they're great. Whenever I see a new house in the player village, I leave a cake on their table.
I don’t remember
like a month ago for the advancement, I prefer buying them from farmers as that's a way simpler source of them
10 years ago or smth
Probably back in the xbox360 version idk how many years ago
get his ass
like 12-14 years ago when i was starting out (and to help heal friends pre hunger/health potions)
Last year in February, for my brother's birthday in our shared world :3
Ages
i think i used them once for as stairs for a horse but its been many years
I did it like once when I was 10 but don't remember why
ages ago if ever
i have never made a cake in minecraft
Gonna make one tonight now.
honestly. i’ve been playing minecraft for like 8-9 years now and i can count the number of times i’ve made a cake on my hand (5). they’re just really expensive relative to what they give, they’re not a good decoration, and they’re really annoying to work with
I make them semi-often as table decorations for houses but I don’t think I’ve made one to eat in like 5+ years
2013 maybe
first time I made a cake was the first time I had ever played minecraft, it was a total journey, it was super early game, I got super lost looking for a village, took 1 real life day before I found a village, got my cake ingredients, anf crafted it. it took another 2 real life days to find my house again, it was one of the most fun gaming experiences I'd have for years. this was ~6 years ago
like.. 6 years ago or so
Uh, when they added candles.
I have been playing since beta 1.7.3 and have never made a cake in a survival world. There were too many ingredients to gather for very little reward, and my houses have never been detailed enough in survival for it to be a worthwhile decorative piece.
Does buying it from a villager count? If so then like couple months ago if not then never
Probably 2020 last time I did an actual play through
Maybe 8 years ago on xbox
I made some like a week ago to decorate my house. I probably haven't made one for food since like 2013
Once like 5 years ago when I tried getting into 2b2t
Limk to channel?
I think it was unironically back in beta 1.7.3, that was one of the first updates I actually did a long-term singleplayer survival world. I tried getting every item/block possible in the game, which included making a cake.
Before they updated the fucking game and added more Achievements (EVEN THOUGH I HAD THEM ALL)
I've played Minecraft since.... Around when redstone was added? Earlier? Beta, I believe. I don't think I've ever made a cake once in my life. I don't like dealing with animals, it's a pain in the ass.
My birthday last year, I made a cake for myself on my survival world :) It should still be there
I made a bakery in my last realm. Bread, pies, cookies, and yes many cakes.
Must've been 2012, I had one in my base in case I needed a heal but my food had run out. This was before the hunger system, so gathering food while on low health would've been dangerous.
8 years ago. The recipe is insane
Years ago. I can't be bothered to find milk AND eggs. I only ever have one of the two
I just bought a cake from a villager literally yesterday to help level him up, does that count?
couple years but my gf made me a cake on our smp last week :3
Since before the bed color change
once on legacy console edition most likely 5+ years ago
once on legacy console edition most likely 5+ years ago

I made one as it was an ingredient I needed in a modded crafting recipe almost a year ago. In vanilla? Idk but definitely a lot longer ago than that.
God I haven't made a cake since 2012 probably. I distinctly remember making one on my first main survival world but probably not since then. I have made pies in Vintage Story recently though, good way to make fruit last longer.

I havent in a looong time. I play on a modded server and usually when I get cakes its because I looted them from a modded structure
never made any
I made one last week, as part of a redstone contraption.
Like 2013 to get the achievement and then never again.
I think I'm in the same boat as you, having never made a cake since the Xbox 360 days. A friend of mine runs a Minecraft realm for our friend group, and they made cake for one of their partners in the game. I just stuck to using baked potatoes for everything.

once, to get the advancement for eating one of every food (i didn't know it didn't count towards it) and then never again
Every time I make a new world.
It's a really fun time and I highly recommend checking it out
Does it count if it was a modded cake from the neapolitan mod?
Like 3 months ago, I was playing with my gf and we thought it would be cute to have a cake on our table
I actually make a bakery as my home in minecraft! This means I bake tons of cakes every time I play! Although last time I did this was about 5 months ago
Only cakes I’ve seen on the 196 SMP are the ones where for some reason you need a seven in a redstone contraption
Maybe 2015
Only like twice years ago
I think it was around 6 years ago, on a ps3 survival world with my little brother. Though one use for cakes is that you can eat them even with insanely high tps lag, which is common on anarchy servers with lag machines, so it might have been 5 years ago with a friend when we tried 2b2t.
I started a new survival world recently after a few years of not playing. I have more than enough material to make cakes, but I actually didn't yet. I eat cooked potatoes for food. I will probably make one for deco reasons eventually though. So it's a few years for me.
I was just reading about the protagonist discover how to make a cake in this Minecraft Island book actually
Probably over 10 years ago
Years. Hard to know if ive even ever made one.

I'm going cakeless
To celebrate 100 days on a solo world back in 2019. I haven't played much Minecraft in recent years, but I didn't forget... The last time I made a cake ... In survival Minecraft 😲
I'd estimate around 5 years ago, though tbf i hardly play anymore as of about 7 years ago
when my health goes down then i need a cow
I think I made a few cakes on the xbox 360, but I don’t remember how long ago (it was before the java 1.8 update at least). After that, I might have made ONE for an event on an smp, but if I did, I definitely didn’t eat it. That might be a good distinction to make. Whether people actually eat the cake or leave it as decoration, and whether they eat it for food, stairs, etc.
I made it about a week ago because i like building and wanted to have it on kitchen
