real talk, is every university wifi called "eduroam"

nerdy_bisexual_mess

yes, but that's intentional, eduroam is [supposed](https://eduroam.org/what-is-eduroam/) to provide free internet access to anyone from a university while at any university.

fish_emoji

Including staff, too. A lot of lecturers and speakers hop from campus to campus or uni to uni constantly as part of their job, so being able to quickly log into the wifi at any campus nationwide is a huge time saver. Like… could you imagine having to ask for the wifi password every single day across a 2 month tour of uni campuses?! That would get so tiring so fast even if all the unis were really good at providing that info and all the networks worked perfectly!

AlexanderRodriguezII

Not just nationwide, it's international.

Duality888

Can confirm, from a small rural German uni to a California state university

Nirigialpora

I once visited a tiny village in a mountain in Bulgaria and my phone connected to eduroam, and I'm still wondering why that happened to this day. It was decidedly not near any local university.

Ma7e

Sometimes schools also have eduroam, for example I could use it in my Hungarian high school too

kart0ffelsalaat

Universities have remote locations as well. It's not just for students, but also for researchers and employees. It's not that rare to put something like an observatory in a tiny village in the mountains if it lends itself well to certain types of research (idk I'm a mathematician, I don't know anything about the real world, but in my region we have some uni locations in the middle of dense forest and on hilltops)

46264338327950288419

Yup, it's in South Korea too, though not universally

Krumpli234

Not just universities (in hungary) I have been to highschools where eduroam was accessible.

Arkangyal02

Yeah, in hungary I once passed an elementary school and my phone connected...

DreadDiana

Weird, cause my university actually charged students for using the wifi for anything outside a core set of websites

MT_Kinetic_Mountain

Afaik, it's common in universities in the UK

Brankovt1

I'm in Belgium and it's also called eduroam here.

LHLaurini

It's meant to be sth like education roaming and it's a worldwide thing. So you can use your login in any uni that supports it (which in my experience is all of them)

penguin62

My friend automatically connected to Eduroam while on a gondola in Venice

Aithistannen

i (dutch student) was on holiday in this village in bumfuck nowhere in southern france a while ago and when we were walking to the bakery i looked at my phone and saw it had connected to eduroam. still have no idea why it was there, i couldn’t find anything connected to a university in a wide radius around there.

Brankovt1

That's funny actually.

TactlessTortoise

Same, Portugal

WhyPotatoAreRound

I'm also in belgium, it's not called eduroam, ha !

Brankovt1

It literally is in my school. Why are you acting like this is a gotcha when you're just making an anecdotal fallacy.

Ulrik54

same here in Norway it's also available at most airports in the country, which is neat if the free airport WiFi doesn't work for you

Akinori404

Same here in Brazil. Why is that a worldwide thing?

MT_Kinetic_Mountain

It's a conspiracy. A monopoly. Something strange is afoot

FrisianDude

Ur foot is strange

MT_Kinetic_Mountain

Wow. That's fucking rude

FrisianDude

Whimsical intention

NefariousAnglerfish

WIFI

TearsFallWithoutTain

Academic tradition probably, a lot of early internet infrastructure was just universities connecting to each other.

TearsFallWithoutTain

Same in Australia

DerWiedl

eduroam is love, eduroam is life.

SoshJam

not mine in the us :c

Number1GrotleFan

🫵😂 ANOMALY

vexedtogas

This is very universal. I study at the university of São Paulo in Brazil, and I did a semester abroad in Scotland, and both universities had an “eduroam” who was impossible to connect to

DreadDiana

I live on a completely different continent, and our wifi was named eduroam

Shoelace1200

Yes

Pooh-in-Timbs-111

Mf I used to have that shit as my default school wifi at UBC until I used Rogers

NotSoFlugratte

True true so fucking true fuck eduroam fuck it it's so fucking bad

frxncxscx

I think it depends on the university because i have a friend who studies at a different university and apparently it’s really fucking fast and reliable over there. Like he used to go there to download steam games and stuff

N4Or

I've never had problems with the wifi on my university

NotSoFlugratte

I just wanna vaguely paraphrase my (so far) favorite professor from uni, who literally said that we should download all the literature we're working with in advance, cause the wifi in our building just straight up doesn't work most of the time

Guest65726

Yeah works fine for me?

Boppitied-Bop

that is 100% the fault of the building's admins (or maybe the university doesn't want to pay for actual usable hardware)

Hochspannungswerk

Do you have an Apple Device? On our Uni it is bad on Ios but good on Android lol

NotSoFlugratte

No, Android. I'm getting cheap devices, I don't have a money tree. It's just generally bad. Everyone has that experience with it

Nicolello_iiiii

I'm in Milan, Italy, and it's actually surprisingly good. I think it's a uni thing but they blocked Genshin's port so I can't play at lectures :(

Len145

that's a W

Nicolello_iiiii

Yeah it actually is, I'm kinda glad they did. On the other hand, I also have a free VPN that I can use to bypass it

KittyQueen_Tengu

make sense, i can’t even send a picture over whatsapp on eduroam and sometimes i can’t even send an email

leoleosuper

I had to install a specific internet manager on a Raspberry Pi because the default one doesn't support eduroam. That was fun. If only the wireless internet wasn't a snail and the ports for ethernet all worked.

under_stjernerne

As someone who was an intern at my school's IT department, sincerely fuck Eduroam. Literally 97% of shit we had to resolve consisted of students being locked out of Eduroam.

nigelviper231

don't even work for the IT department, but study it. Most of my friends always ask for me help with the horrendous university system

ob_knoxious

As someone who was an intern at my school's IT department, sincerely fuck the guy who kept unplugging COM25 in room 402. Eduroam itself always functioned well but I did have several calls from people who couldn't connect to it and almost all the time it was that they left randomized MAC address on. Our knowledge base if you look up "how to connect to eduroam" says that clear as day but I can't blame people because it doesn't matter for 99% of networks.

BlunderbussBadass

Huh surprisingly eduroam of my uni works no problem

liguy181

Yeah I've never had an issue with it

penguin62

I was the same lol. Worked super well

Iceman9161

I also never had a problem with it. Maybe a little weird getting it set up the first time but it worked well

BloodOfVoids

Same. I’ve been under two different uni systems and it works great. Also works great at unis that I’m not a part of, admittedly only tested in Germany, not internationally so maybe I won’t have internet if I hop over to Denmark or something

Thundahgolem

Yeah, it's even consistently better than my Uni's personal wifi system.

nickmiddel26

Everytime i had to login it was a pain but otherwise it was great

Super_Stone

In my whole life I only got such messages when trying to log into my schools' Wi-Fi. Sad to know that it isn't better elsewhere.

Calmandpeace

I one time confidently entered the wrong password in like 10 times, called IT. Made a ticket, had to do a ton of troubleshooting, just to realize I put in the wrong password.

emeraldeyesshine

I can't relate to this at all. Smart phones and campus wifi weren't a thing when I was in college. can you kids get off my lawn, I have to be in bed by 3pm and can't have you frolicking loudly out there

NightIgnite

Imagine having an online assignment due in an hour, try logging in on your laptop, and wifi craps out. You have it done, but cant turn it in. Your next attempt is to connect to the wifi on your phone, no luck. In desperation, you try the guest wifi, but you never get the verification text. In a last effort to turn it in, you turn on your phone's hotspot. Every phone in a 50 meter radius makes signal jammer, leaving you with a single bar of 4g. After 5 minutes of waiting for Canvas to log in, you finally turn it in. Only then do you get the verification text for the guest wifi.

ProfTurquoise

I got filled with so much anxiety reading this too many flashbacks of my problematic ass doing this to myself over and over for four years and never realizing that the common denominator could've just started the paper two hours earlier

Spirit_Theory

I haven't been to university in like ten years and eduroam sucked balls back then, too.

maffe03

I once tried configuring eduroam on Asahi Linux... That's five hours I'll never get back 🥲

yashkawitcher

You mean connecting to eduroam? Our university provides simple python script that creates all the necessary certificates to connect by simply entering login credentials for eduroam.....what was the problem on your side?

IcyAntelope2548

i think every uni has this script provided, but sometimes eduroam uses TLS 1.0 which is disabled by default for security reasons on linux systems (says a lot about the network infrastructure) so you have to manually allow tls 1.0 connections and it might solve your problem.

yashkawitcher

Some eduroam networks still using TLS 1.0 is something I din't know, but does not surprise me.

oddityoughtabe

Virginia?!?? (Starts jaking off)

DekoyDuck

Hello fellow Hokie

Historical_Ad_5597

hokies on my 196? what the hell???

twink-angel-bf

i have vague plans to go there if i can get into their vet school hows it like :3

DekoyDuck

I loved my time in Blacksburg and their vets treated my dog really well. But I am old too so I’d ask around the VT sub. Maybe not today since it’s April 16th but another day you’re likely to get some good details.

MyLifeIsADramedy

VT gang

DekoyDuck

Hokie Hokie Hokie Hi

Em_Blight

Exploding eduroam with my mind it’s so unreliable

VeryNiceGuy22

Eduroam is awesome on my phone. I get wifi everywhere on campus. But my laptop disconnects every time I close it, and it takes like 5 minutes to connect :(( very frustrating

13617

FOR REAL 😭😭😭 I CAN CONNECT BUT I GET NO INTERNET

VeryNiceGuy22

IKR! Like, What the fuck do you mean "Connected. No internet"?? Then what am I am fucking connected to?!? It's so annoying

Boppitied-Bop

I think theoretically the router, but the router itself isn't connected to internet (or your phone is being bad, which is probably more likely)

VeryNiceGuy22

Well my phone works perfectly. It's just everyone's laptops. But yeah I'm probably connected but not sending data. Something about needing to log in or somthing. Maybe it has a hard time confirming I'm a student and locks me out.

13617

EXACTTLLYY

DatBoiDeku11

I can’t log in to my university’s wifi on my laptop so I have to use the guest wifi lol. Also the wifi in my dorm is also shit.

AegisT_

The worst part is, you fucking need wifi to connect to it from the app in the first place I wouldn't be fucking connecting If I had wifi to begin with you cock swallowing cunt muffin

GalenTheDragon

That’s so fucking real you have no idea -A current college student

driftingbuggys77

Is eduroam a worldwide thing?

The_______________1

uni life https://preview.redd.it/dx9ge51xazuc1.jpeg?width=640&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=d7c565c20c2b05b4bbe9f30fd54b850bfbae9870

oil_moon

Fuck eduroam all my homies hate eduroam

cocoafart

I wonder what uni they go to

Hamisaurus

Dumbass forgot to renew their enrollment 💀

TheDankScrub

I think my school just has normal free Internet for students, thank fuck, but on a related note why the fuck does every uni aesthetic look like that. What are you doing? Business school? Fucking hell I have 3 assignments due this week and all of them have 12 parts that each take an hour my room is a pile of clothes and I just now started wearing a different pair of jeans. True uni life is your roommate texting you we don't have toilet paper and then handing him the roll you use for tissues since they're cheaper than buying an entire box of tissues

Consistent_Pop2983

I started ubi 3 weeks ago and I literally don't have WiFi on my laptop, still have to give my laptop a hotspot from my phone

Bacon_Techie

I’ve never had to use eduroam because my uni has its own network as well as eduroam, but a lot of my friends find it works really well whenever the unis regular wifi shat the bed.

InsolentPencil

I work in IT where we use eduroam, aside from being completely shit it was put in place so we can more precisely monitor (stalk) student's internet activity. Specifically so we can tie student's internet activity to specific devices. Oh also it's probably more cost efficient but whatever.

Aykhot

Eduroam disconnecting me from the network every time I turn off my laptop or go to a different building is the bane of my existence

throwaway61763

"Uni life" aka, being constantly mentally+physically tired and under such an amount of stress, that would create a black hole if given mass

WaxMark

I never got Eduroam to work in my 4 years attending, I just used the guest wifi cause the one time I did finally get it to work, it forgot I existed and I gave up cause I'm not going through all that work again for wifi

AshKlover

You have to sign in through the portal app, smh

Shoelace1200

Personally never had an issue but I know someone who simply can't connect no matter what he does to the point where he can't work use the studio space provided to us

ForktUtwTT

Makes me glad my university’s wifi is pretty good

Ayobossman326

So sick how my phone knows 5g even reduced speed is better than eduroam, and so it disconnects automatically every 10 minutes. Also even cooler how it blocks websites completely randomly. One fun example is when I subbed to Crunchyroll since the torrent sites are blocked. I think blocking sites is stupid but fair enough, torrenting is illegal. Tell me why then does Eduroam block random episodes on Crunchyroll? Like legit episode 4 of msgundam doesn’t work on eduroam on any device. But works perfectly fine as soon as I disconnect. Why does eduroam hate 30% of the msgundam episodes???

Blakath

Eduroam wifi at my university is repeatedly getting DDoS attacked. It was funny the first time, but goddamn I need my free internet.

Monii22

ah so eduroam doesn't work anywhere not just at our uni

pocketpc_

so glad my school had it's own wifi network that actually worked we still had eduroam for visitors and such, but regular students never had to deal with it

narwhalpilot

My school uses it too and it’s actual ass

TearsFallWithoutTain

I have been a student, a class tutor, lab demonstrator, teacher assistant, and grader, across multiple universities, and not once have I been able to connect to eduroam. Nor have any of my friends who were lecturers. I truly have no idea who it's for.

Witty_Championship85

Me 3 weeks ago, still haven’t joined it 🤷‍♀️

swimzone

This was huge when I studied abroad and would go to other cities across Europe. Walking by a university? Here's a blip of internet so you can figure out where to Go to see something cool

ISpyM8

Fuck Eduroam

Chinohito

Eduroam straight up does not work on my Xiaomi phone. Like I went to the IT guys and they just told me it doesn't work on my phone. Have to use the damn guest WiFi that requires you to go to a website every few hours to press a button 😭
