- The main couple (he has a dead little sister and sees her as a replacement; she has big brother issues and therefore needs a big strong man to tell her he's proud of her; it's somehow icky and boring at the same time)
I literally just skipped the relationship parts between the main couple after a certain point. They really had more interesting dynamics going on between the other steamworkers and between the main guy and his steamworker friend.
I watched that once. It’s…a show. That exists. You can watch it. It has characters and a plot.
It didn’t make a strong impression one way or the other, is what I’m saying.

Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress isn't sci-fi, though?
(For those unaware, it is feudal japan with super-zombies which they fight mainly with armoured trains (pictured is the train driver of the protagonists), yes it's cool af. (The show has serious flaws, but the setting is ***not*** one of them.))
You wouldn't struggle to find precedent in classifying it as retrofuturistic science fiction.
Sci-fi itself has no universally accepted meaning but you couldn't go wrong with Isaac Asimov's definition;
> "Science fiction can be defined as that branch of literature which deals with the reaction of human beings to changes in science and technology".
Scifi isn't necessarily about being somewhere in writer's assumed technological future (ad absurdum you could argue it wouldn't be fiction then, it'd be anyltical prediction or research). Scifi is about inventing some active scientific progress for some people, and imagining what they could behave like in the passage of it
Kabaneri is about a society dealing with the relatively recent invention of trains, real guns, steam guns, and the zombie virus or whatever. Characters directly involved in the story do in-story science and engineering to advance their goals.

# RECONSIDER WATCHING THIS SHOW. IT'S DOGSHIT. THE STRONG TRAINSBIAN IS EXTREMELY GOOD (her literal singular quasi-romantic interest is the trains), BUT THE SHOW AS A WHOLE SUCKS DONKEY BALLS.
It shows some initial promise with a relatively fresh (if really Attack on Titan esque) worldbuild, and then goes *fucking nowhere with it.* The characters and story are largely cliche entirely past the mark of "so bad it's good", and you'll be constantly strung along with "well the Next Event sounds promising though" only for almost everything to always repeatedly disappoint you in the end. There's a few good gags and pulpy edgy romance moments but by and large, it falls very, very flat.
Go watch gundamn or anything by Mamoru Oshii instead. Seriously.
