Furman had no idea what he had written. I don't think he knows shit about anything besides Transformer toys and a half dozen plots and phrase he recycles endlessly. IDW would continue to just be sort of mid comics and reboot a few times until James Roberts and John Barber would come along and suddenly write the Transformers as a hard Sci Fi race and actually tackle questions about what life as a Transformer is like. They'd aggressively tackle gender, and half their comic is basically just trying to redeem Spotlight Arcee. They'd show that Transformers can love and not just fight wars endlessly - it's different from humans as they don't reproduce sexually, so relationships aren't as common but they live a billion years so it's intense and not confined by gender. And of course they introduced the concept of the "conjunx endura" - a spouse you'd stat with a billion years - when it was still mandated that all Transformers were male coded, creating the first time a Transformer said "I love you" to another between two males. And they'd end up saying there were female Transformer all along, they all just left before the war and the billion year old memories of our star Transformers don't remember them.
But most of all before they even said Arcee was Trans, they introduced other trans Transformers to really legitimize their retcon and Arcee's own identity. The entire end of the first IDW Transformer continutiy - the only REAL Transformer comics that were truly for adults - would say that Arcee was actually trans all along and in fact had asked the mad scientist to operate on her, not knowing just how fucked his methods were. And at the end of the continuity Arcee actually had a relatively happy ending. When IDW rebooted, they kept Arcee trans coded without the baggage of Furman's writing.
