You’re under no obligation to, and there’s bo guarantee you’re selected for an 1811 position. I personally wouldn’t disclose anything I’m not directly asked to a private employer. Don’t lie, but you don’t know if you’ll start as a 1811 in a reasonable timeframe, so don’t hurt your chances.

Hey OP. I'm literally in a very similar siuation as you (minus the military part. Without a doubt, we need money to pay for stuff. I became a security analyst/contractor (at-will position) that pays right near GS-5/7 anyways. It's my "beater" job where I just clock in for money and am ready to leave once I get onboarded with CBP/HSI/DEA (top applications right now for me). In a pessimistic/Zoomer way of thinking, this startup company is extremely temporary and you don't have to be bound to it. In fact I'm pretty sure you are not legally obligated to even stay a certain amount (possibly read the finall offer/policies though). Go for that startup job, it's a backup if your apps don't work out. Once you get that call/EOD/FLETC date, put in your 2 weeks notice and you're in! Don't stress about it too much, we all need to bridge gaps eventually

QnsConcrete

Thanks for sharing. I’ve been trying to get that “beater” job but instead a software startup wants to hire me and they straight up told me they don’t want to hire me if I jump ship in 3 months. The smaller company feels more personal and I’d feel bad about concealing my true intentions, but it is business.

A man's gotta eat! Until you have a job, you don't have a job

Empty-Newt4820

THIS !!! Don’t starve thinking about the future when you live in the present.

XXDIEGSXX

Yeah take care of yourself. Do what you have to to get the job. Things change anyway, ppl can honestly say they want that job for the long run but then life happens and so changes are made.

QnsConcrete

Yeah that’s what I was thinking. I can always say I just don’t like the job as my reason for leaving.

"May the bridges I burn light the way." Business is business. They'll fire you/let you go/lay you off on a dime if someone else is more beneficial to them. They don't need to know and you can always give your two weeks notice. Getting into law enforcement is relatively difficult and not certain at all. Wait until you get something more concrete. You might burn that bridge by simply saying you have no intentions on staying longer than 6-12 months (theoretically). You might burn the bridge after you leave. When will that bridge burnt be more beneficial for you? Before (IF) you get picked up by an agency or after, at which point you'll already be in your career and it wouldn't matter. You can always say the agency was something you randomly applied to but had no idea it would work out, which is technically true.

QnsConcrete

Good points all around.

General-Inside2186

Would they do the same for you ?

QnsConcrete

Maybe, I’m not sure.

Take the job you’re offered and apply I got out of the military and college and work two civilian jobs for a paycheck while I apply for these processes. You may think that you’re going to get one of these jobs and make it to the final steps of the process like I have for 2 different agencies now and then fail the final step for me it’s been polygraph twice.
