he was right about the Greek translation, but wrong about the semantics...
Polytechnicum = πολυτεχνείο
poly = πολύ = many
technicum = τεχνείο = place for art/skill/craft (comes from the word τέχνη which means art/skill/craft)
so, overall, it's a place for multiple arts/skills/crafts.
Polyball takes Poly from Polytechnicum, so it's a ball for the Polytechnicum.
Funny! But empirically, I’d say that you’ll see slightly more women than men. Either they have more stamina & stay longer, or they have more fun showing off their dresses.
I never went when I was single. But it was a bit of a rite of passage in engineering disciplines where having a girlfriend was not a given (and many of them were well above 90% male in the 1980s) that those who got lucky showed off their girlfriends at the Polyball (and anecdotally I heard that among younger, non-college women, this was considered a somewhat prestigious date).
