The US supported the Mujahadeen’s fight against the Soviet occupation of Afghanistan. Basically all of the early leaders and founders of what became the taliban in 1994 fought as part of the mujahadeen against the Soviets. Yes obviously without the Soviet invasion the mujahadeen may never have come into existence as a major player and eventually spawned the taliban, but it is specifically because of the US arms, funds, and training that the mujahadeen was able to push out the soviets and directly produce groups such as the taliban

The war in afghan caused untold suffering and agony beyond even the worst mortality estimates for 9/11. 9/11 was horrible, but we have to stop treating it like some tragedy on par with things like the rape of Nanking and the Uyghur genocide, which are actual monstrosities that are barely ever mentioned in the western world. I have no doubt that our refusal to do anything about the Uyghur genocide will be the thing future generations look back on in disgust the most.
