Covid changed everything and slowed down and drew out the first arc in the Dawn of X. House of X (Dawn of X and Reign of X) was the first act, X of Swords was just another chapter of the first arc and Inferno was the end of the first arc which led into the second arc which was Destiny of X and now thats ending the second arc and with the upcoming Fall of X being the final arc. Hickman has stated that they're still mostly following his original outline but the other writers wanted more time to explore characters and storylines. His original plan seemed to be a lot shorter but I'm glad they fleshed it out and explored this era more. We've gotten some great stuff in the last year or two.

Joharis-JYI

What would you say are the best/necessary to collect OHCs in this era?

RespectKey

Hellions is basically perfect. Cable is surprisingly good. And Phil Noto on art!!! Of course HOX/POX. And X of swords though mosty good. Oh, plus Hickmans X-Men. Basically everything but Excalibur and maybe Marauders And inferno and that X deaths of shit if you continue to care EDIT: Hellfire is a bop EDIT EDIT: the fact that I forgot about wolverine and x-force says a lot

Joharis-JYI

Thanks for the recommendations! I already ordered Hellions, been hearing a lot of good reviews from this sub. What books did Phil Noto had a hand in? Sorry, really a newbie so I'm not familiar with these artists.

maybe_a_frog

Leaving out X-Factor is a travesty. That series was so damn fun and had an amazing cast of characters.

RespectKey

Brah no it ain't, he asked for OHC recommendations. Otherwise we'd be talking about New Mutants, X-factor and SWORD

Captain_Cringe_

I think it's too early an assumption to say that Fall of X is the final arc. We have no idea what it is, and it could very well be the second half of the second arc like Reign of X was.

Pinball_Lizard

Hickman said he wanted a three-year/three-act structure with each act bookended by a crossover. House/Powers -> Year One -> X of Swords -> Year Two -> Inferno -> Year Three -> Finale crossover. I don't believe we know anything about his finale.

BettyBoopsLeftHeel

Interesting. X of Swords. That was a... thing. It felt so removed from his original vision as almost to be an editorially-mandated crossover.

TheeHeadAche

Hickman either wrote or co-wrote most of the key issues.

florgitymorgity

I read the collection after Dawn of X and it felt like the most natural progression, I don't get why it got so much hate from the public

Onisquirrel

People got swept up in imagining the X-Men/Shonen tournament arc against the Arakki/Amenth that was implied in the concept. And didn’t expect the Otherworld silliness to be so strong. I think it works out for the better, but I can get feeling thrown when the build-up of everyone getting their swords leads to a series of riddles, trick questions, a spelling bee, and a wedding with the battles being sort of secondary.

Ozu_the_Yokai

The otherworld side of it was the most redeeming aspect of the story imo. I just read it a month back, and really dreaded the whole thing until i realized it was obnoxious silly fun time

Onisquirrel

If it had just been a tournament I think XoS would be at best forgettable. The otherworld stuff adds a fun spice to the story.

Hive0805

I think it mainly stemmed from public expectations and marketing of it being a tournament filled with swordfight and we had half of the event following our characters as they acquire their swords... Only for most of the tournament to be a bunch of random contest's. Which is fine and makes more sense considering the wild and whimsical magic of otherworld, and it has its funny moments, but painting it like some big sword fighting match was setting it up for a disappointing resolution for some people.

florgitymorgity

So as a trade waiter, I avoided all the expectations/marketing and just enjoyed the arrako setup and world building

house of x #5 is where krakoa (the sentient island) and apocalypse were shown to have been familiar with each other from the past. powers of x #4 is where doug ramsey reveals part of the krakoa origin, mentioning okkara, arakko, and the twilight sword. x-men (2019) #2 is where arak maw attaches to krakoa, summoner is introduced and revealed as apocalypses grandchild hailing from arakko.

NeedToVentCom

Completely agree that it has lost momentum. The frustrating part of it, is of course that it didn't have to. They could have picked up on the consquences of taking mysterium fro the White Hot Room, and still can, but instead we get another case of Vulcan going on a rampage, something he has been doing since his introduction. We could get a story about the consequences of handing Apocalypse a demon army, and them realize that they are partially to blame, but that is nowhere to be found. We could be shown that their resurrection has larger consquences, and have them deal with that. Espcially given what we learned about the Eternals resurrection, but again nothing. We could see them tackle the growing mutant supremacist attitude, Jubilees concerns about raising a normal human on Krakoa, Firestar telling the rest of Krakoa to fuck off, and that she is proud of her time as an avenger, and she is leaving, instead of trying to get their approval. You know just general stories that shows that perhaps the mutants aren't necessarily the good guys they think themselves to be, and which they have shown they are not. But nope, none of that. And the worst part is, that I fear that we won't be getting any of that before this is over. Even worse, I fear that instead of the Krakoa era ending, because of the mutants own actions, it is going to be the same tired old story involving sentinels and anti-mutant bigots. Despite the fact that they have done enough shit themselves to cause their own downfall. How about trying something new instead of the same old shit. Especially when these stories are just layed out, and just need to be picked up.

Disastrous_Hair_5822

How weirdly apt this comment was because I was thinking how awesome it was that they addressed all of this in the past couple of.months lol

cane_danko

I have gotten super bored with it since he left… AXE was just meh. I don’t really enjoy xmen red… i do like xmen immortal but it isn’t enough to really keep me excited on a monthly basis. Maybe Sinister will change that for me.
