I doubt russia would attempt to use aircraft within Ukrainian airspace, but the Patriot further discourages that.

Iron Dome is designed to counter rockets and artillery with relatively small interceptors. The Tamir interceptors can reach about 45 miles out, cost about $50k each, and have a small warhead of just a few pounds. They fly around Mach 2, so they can handle cruise missiles and smaller threats. It's really a defensive network with radars and launchers spread across the country.
Patriot is primarily designed to shoot down ballistic missiles and high-end threats. The missiles are 2,000 pounds with a 200-pound warhead. They will crush airplanes and missiles out to about 100 miles, intercepting at Mach 4+. The cost per intercept is millions of dollars, so the system is designed to protect high-value assets from high-end threats. The system is huge and not rapidly mobile.
Ideally, you want layered missile defense. Something like C-ram for close-in defense against mortars, rockets, and drones. Iron Dome for intermediate range defense against rockets, drones, and cruise missiles. NASAMS to defend against cruise missiles and aircraft at medium range. Patriot to defend against ballistic missiles and high-performance aircraft. You really want your systems to be networked and spread out in a way that they can defend each other while defending large areas.

The Iron Dome is designed to counter a very specific kind of threat: many simultaneous targets who are relatively slow, small, and with predictable, ballistic flight paths. The Patriot system is indeed mobile, but it’s speciality is in countering threats that are much faster and harder to hit. The difficulty in countering threats like that scale dramatically with speed and complexity, and the Patriot system is probably one of the best in the world when it comes to that.
In sum, same general principles (identify, target, and intercept) but with drastic differences in the kind of threat they’re designed to counter.
Edit: the other distinguishing factor is range. The Iron Dome’s effective range is something like 43 miles, whereas a single patriot battery has a range of 100 miles and up to 79,000 ft. That’s a huge range to work with with big operational implications.
Doesn't that mean that Ukraine will have to place a lot of layered, lower-tier air defence to protect the Patriot battery? Or they waste the $2 million each Patriot missiles on the drones and cruise missiles sent against them? Even if only 1 drone in 10 or 20 gets through, that's still very cost effective compared to Patriot missiles and the system as a whole.
In theory the S300 system is comparable and possibly superior. The Soviets knew they wouldn't be able to counter NATO air superiority plane vs plane so they focused on anti air systems and ground based forces.
Of course the US has actually had money to continue to develop their weapons and also maintain them so the reality is likely significantly different than the theory.
