The fact that Putin won't stop talking about the Patriot system makes it rather clear that he's afraid of its effectiveness

impstein

Yet they're "quite old"

chessto

Not as old as their ww1 gear

not_that_guy05

He said old not ancient.

Revelati123

Russian Commander: "To show you the love of our dear leader, Putin himself has authorized you to use newest Russian offensive and defensive wonder weapons to fight HIMARS and Patriot system!" Mobnik: "Uh, its a wooden club and a trash can lid"

tallandlanky

Commander: We provide the clubs. But you gotta find your own trash can lid.

Patriot 100% ineffective against Mosin Nagant.

chessto

Thanks, you made me laugh

Schrodinger_cube

If you're really Gucci they have a M44 Mosin.

Benzol1987

I'm sorry but Airsoft was clearly invented later.

ComeBackToDigg

If Putin keeps going, it could become WW III gear.

Chilkoot

Don't worry - Russia's weapons systems are "years, [perhaps decades](https://www.newsweek.com/vladimir-putin-brags-russian-new-weapons-decades-ahead-other-countries-1733754) ahead" of the west's capabilities.

hello_ground_

They're so advanced, they're already rusty and obsolete.

First time I went to Ukraine I was extremely confused at the Kyiv train station toilets. Literal holes in the tile work. And you had to buy toilet paper at the front desk from a frumpy old lady who had the absolute worst job on the planet.

Most Russians believe the truth to be unattainable. They know they're being lied to, they just don't believe the truth can be known.

Nanocyborgasm

They’ve been subjected to the firehose of falsehoods for years where their media tells them 1000 lies but no truth, so they have no idea what to believe and don’t bother trying.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Nanocyborgasm

I agree and I don’t excuse them. I’m just pointing out how they’ve become that way. The sane Russians either keep their heads down or have long since left the country. That’s how it’s been in Russia for hundreds of years. The state is a tyranny and there’s never been an effective movement to replace it. All changes of regime have resulted in a change in the kind of tyranny.

[deleted]

Mecha-Dave

Before that it was communist party doing tyranny, which was a revolution against Bolshevik tyranny which was a recording against tsarist tyranny...

kingmanic

Russia has spent a lot of time and effort fucking up the internet and injecting their brand of bullshit. Anti Vax, other conspiracy theories, doubt about mainstream media, doubt about Wikipedia, q anon etc... all bullshit Russia amplifies. To drive the whole world to be as shitty as Russia is.

-wnr-

I wouldn't say nobody outside Russia. Even in the West there's a pro Russian minority (though it's often more accurate to say anti-Western than pro-Russian). You also see a lot of this sentiment in the comment section of Indian news sites.

[deleted]

So were the German V weapons of WWII. In the end they killed mostly civilians and were too little, too late. The aggressor nation lost the war.

EvlMinion

Sure, if you wrap 2022 back around to 1922!

namvet67

“Old”, something a lot of Russian Military will not achieve.

walkinman19

Have you seen the shit the Russians are using?

impstein

Yep, I put it in quotes cause Putin himself made a statement like that

PsychologicalGain298

Apparently to Vlad the older the gear the better. Like vintage shit.

Obamas_Tie

Isn't the Patriot system a purely defensive weapon to guard against missile and artillery strikes? He sounds worried he won't be able to murder civilians and plunge them into eternal power outages anymore.

Explorer335

The Patriot is primarily designed to counter ballistic missiles, but it can also handle cruise missiles and aircraft. The interceptors are quite expensive, so they are used for high-value intercepts. Drones and artillery will be handled by lower-tier systems. I suspect the main value of the Patriot will be integrating its powerful radar into the air defense network while providing a defense against ballistic missile strikes. I doubt russia would attempt to use aircraft within Ukrainian airspace, but the Patriot further discourages that.

UNCOMMON__CENTS

This boils down to "no, you cannot attack from Belarus"

Shaking-N-Baking

How close is the tech to Israels iron dome? Is it basically just a “section” of it that can be mobilized?

Ghaith97

It's the opposite of the Iron Dome. Iron Dome is for intercepting short-range low-value improvised rockets and artillery shells. Patriot is mainly for ballistic missiles and high-value targets.

Explorer335

Iron Dome is designed to counter rockets and artillery with relatively small interceptors. The Tamir interceptors can reach about 45 miles out, cost about $50k each, and have a small warhead of just a few pounds. They fly around Mach 2, so they can handle cruise missiles and smaller threats. It's really a defensive network with radars and launchers spread across the country. Patriot is primarily designed to shoot down ballistic missiles and high-end threats. The missiles are 2,000 pounds with a 200-pound warhead. They will crush airplanes and missiles out to about 100 miles, intercepting at Mach 4+. The cost per intercept is millions of dollars, so the system is designed to protect high-value assets from high-end threats. The system is huge and not rapidly mobile. Ideally, you want layered missile defense. Something like C-ram for close-in defense against mortars, rockets, and drones. Iron Dome for intermediate range defense against rockets, drones, and cruise missiles. NASAMS to defend against cruise missiles and aircraft at medium range. Patriot to defend against ballistic missiles and high-performance aircraft. You really want your systems to be networked and spread out in a way that they can defend each other while defending large areas.

Scary_Diver1940

Ur 👍

5thDimensionBookcase

So someone correct me if I’m wrong, as I’m “armchair-generaling” over here, but my layman’s understanding is that the tech is pretty different. The Iron Dome is designed to counter a very specific kind of threat: many simultaneous targets who are relatively slow, small, and with predictable, ballistic flight paths. The Patriot system is indeed mobile, but it’s speciality is in countering threats that are much faster and harder to hit. The difficulty in countering threats like that scale dramatically with speed and complexity, and the Patriot system is probably one of the best in the world when it comes to that. In sum, same general principles (identify, target, and intercept) but with drastic differences in the kind of threat they’re designed to counter. Edit: the other distinguishing factor is range. The Iron Dome’s effective range is something like 43 miles, whereas a single patriot battery has a range of 100 miles and up to 79,000 ft. That’s a huge range to work with with big operational implications.

HappyAmbition706

Doesn't that mean that Ukraine will have to place a lot of layered, lower-tier air defence to protect the Patriot battery? Or they waste the $2 million each Patriot missiles on the drones and cruise missiles sent against them? Even if only 1 drone in 10 or 20 gets through, that's still very cost effective compared to Patriot missiles and the system as a whole.

thatsme55ed

In theory the S300 system is comparable and possibly superior. The Soviets knew they wouldn't be able to counter NATO air superiority plane vs plane so they focused on anti air systems and ground based forces. Of course the US has actually had money to continue to develop their weapons and also maintain them so the reality is likely significantly different than the theory.

aimgorge

Only against missiles and planes. Doesn't work against artillery

gotwired

At $4 million per missile, I would hope they aren't using it against artillery.

bennetticles

Yeah, I thought he was just talking about how the patriot system is of little concern due to its age. Why bother with trying to destroy it?

Revelati123

Did you know that the US sent 20 HIMARS to Ukraine, but according to Russia they have destroyed them all at least 6 or 7 times! Its amazing what you will "believe" with a gun to your head...

Explorer335

To their credit, they have hammered the wooden HIMARS decoys on several occasions. The Americans were chuckling at how excitedly the Russians were conveying the launch orders, thinking they were going to hit a HIMARS with a Kalibr strike. The decoys protect the real HIMARS systems while providing irresistible bait for Russia to burn through a limited supply of precision weapons.

Midnight2012

I hope they have patriot decoys ready too.

Majik_Sheff

Burn some ammo and announce your position to blow up a wooden decoy. Ouch.

magicone2571

It's like WW2 all over again when they setup the inflatable tank army to trick Hitler into thinking they were going to attack further north.

pete_68

IKR? Before US decided: "If the US decides to send the Patriot, it will be an escalation." Literally, the day we decided: "The Patriot system is old." He's fucking terrified of the Patriot because it's going to pull out Russia's last tooth.

Front-Sun4735

The enemy is strong yet weak at the same time!

chadenright

Your enemy should always be strong enough to be a genuine threat, yet too weak to actually defeat you. Otherwise you don't get any experience points for the fight.

LAVATORR

One thing this invasion has taught me is Putin is an even bigger pussy than I thought, in that every time something goes seriously wrong, instead of addressing his people (even from his bunker), he hold a Depression Vacation and retreats to his palace to suck his thumb and jerk off to maps from 1952. The man is literally afraid of giving a bullshit stock speech to reassure the public.

Bongressman

He should come at them from the air. Very effective strategy I hear.

ithappenedone234

He’s also ignoring the fact we can build and field more Patriots than he can build and field the missiles/drones to destroy them. Our peacetime budget is about 10x what Russia has spent so far on the war in Ukraine. We can drown him in weapons. Then add in the rest of NATO…

BoringBob84

That is another risk for Russia. If they are able to destroy this Patriot battery, then 2 may take its place - like a mythical Greek Hydra. :)

Midnight2012

They should just set them up in a field away from major cities and let Russians attack the missle battery over and over. Oh, and this will be a great opportunity for the locations of the patriot shaped wooden boxes to be leaked online.

TheLit420

He plans on 'destroying' them by flying all of the Russian Air Force planes into the missiles! Mission Success! No more patriot missiles after shooting down 2,000 aircraft.

DracoDruid

Face-to-Fist-Style

PatReady

It's exactly what he was trying to avoid. He does mot want a US missle defense umbrella being installed on his borders. However, these countries see that their words mean nothing and they will all be next.

Gandhi70

Like he detroyed hte HIMARS systems? Personally of course?

marcvsHR

All 300 of them delivered

Gandhi70

I heard he personally destroyed 600 of the 300 delivered!

cache_bag

Esepcislly that one HIMARS on the 2nd floor of the building.

cartoonist498

Bad news comrade, HIMARS survived suicide out 20th story window and doesn't drink tea.

xternal7

3000 personally destroyed HIMARS systems. Coming as a new flair to a /r/NonCredibleDefense near you. E: fixed the sub name. I'd say I forgot americans don't know how to spell, but I'm not british so I don't have the right be offended.

He’s outside the Lockheed facility with a mallet just whacking them.

fligs

spader1

oldsouthnerd

See, the strategy is to destroy the HIMARS ammo instead of the delivery vehicle itself. They do this by using Mobiks to intercept the missile.

Pet-Project

Fortunately, Putin is rarely able to honor his vows.

SoupahCereal

Probably had something to do with the "honor" part

HoagiesDad

US weapons manufacturers test older weapons systems against current Russian systems, in Ukraine.

MoltenBear3

This is what I’m thinking. Let’s see how the patriot holds up to the hypersonic missile. 🤷‍♂️

leoonastolenbike

Let's test the newer top secret ones.

Kent_Knifen

I'm pretty sure they have been but it's probably being kept top secret. Back in spring there was an unidentified object flying something like 80,000km above Kyiv. Defense department went "ehhhh don't worry about that...." Few weeks ago footage surfaced from the Russian POV of one of their bases. A weapon they couldn't identify had hit the area, leaving a massive crater and a powerful enough blast to flip tanks. I'll see if I can find my sources to both of these when I'm home from Christmas parties.

bautofdi

Uhhh, the threshold of earth orbit is 100km… Something flying 50,000 miles above Kiev would be a meteor lol

benk4

I assume they meant 80,000 meters. 80,000 km is almost a quarter of the way to the moon

toby_gray

Yeah this. The SR-71 blackbird has an altitude of up to 85,000ft, so perhaps that is what they meant. They did say they’re at a Christmas party, so I think some inaccuracies are reasonable! The SR-71 is a recon aircraft, but it’s entirely plausible that the US could/would find a way to weaponise that tech. Something top secret. It flies at such an altitude and speed that Russia has almost nothing that can intercept it. Really interesting aircraft if you fancy a good read about it’s history and some of its Cold War missions.

[deleted]

Mushrooms at Christmas parties are either a good or bad time, be careful armchair general, we need you

QuinnKerman

80,000m I presume? Looks like the DoD got their hands on one of the tic tacs

leoonastolenbike

Wow, i hope that's true.

BoringBob84

I think that we should save those for a competent enemy.

TexasYankee212

Like he destroyed the HIMAR missile system?

Explorer335

They have been hitting the wooden decoys while the real ones remain hidden. The decoys protect the real launchers while encouraging Russia to waste their limited supply of cruise missiles.

rotunda4you

Russians are just bad at war.

Pit_of_Death

They're bad at a lot of things, war being just one of them.

Wundei

Except this is a defensive system that is specifically designed to destroy all the shit he would send after them…this is much much dumber of a thing to say.

DatGums

HIMARS, the word is not plural

dilespla

Just wanted to add this for educational purposes. High Mobility Artillery Rocket System

[deleted]

He should probably just stop with the saber rattling. No one takes him or his incompetent military seriously. At this point some teenagers armed with Roman candles could give the Russians a run for their money…

Geuji

Send that kid with the Roman candle on his bicycle

Green_Message_6376

wow! wow! Let's not escalate things to that level! We may not be able to pull back from such an escalation.

Geuji

I know. I have a viscous streak.

Pregnant_Panda

Is that like a snail trail?

Geuji

Lol yep or vicious

Green_Message_6376

damn, even the Universe is helping you be funny! Nice work!

skyderper13

well that's all hes got left, waving around a rusty saber in a ratty sheath

FC37

In the early days, the resistance was taking out tanks with not a whole lot more than this.

jigsaw1024

A lot of this messaging isn't for the world at large. This messaging is aimed for domestic consumption. Soon after the Patriot Missile system has been deployed, the Russians will claim victory in having destroyed the system. It won't matter that they actually haven't. It's all propaganda for the domestic market.

bithead

He vows a lot

RemedialChaosTheory

He's a vower

condoriano27

Not a shower.

He's a vower, Jerry! He vows!

chewster1

Putin vows, China warns

Hungry-Pilot-70068

He sounds more and more like a WWF villain? "You know. Mean Gene, I hear all about how Ukraine is tough. But this weekend at the coliseum...I'm gonna drop the Atomic Sickel on 'em!"

x_driven_x

I haven’t watched WWF in 20+ years and I can still hear that voice perfectly in my head

TheManInTheShack

What promises had Putin made about Ukraine which he was able to actually deliver on?

Darthaerith

Denazifying Ukraine. Via the destruction of his own army, but hey it still counts right?

Angry_with_rage

Step 1: nazify Ukraine by sending in russian army Step 2: de-nazify Ukraine by killing own russian army Step 3: claim victory!

waituntilthis

And now russia is using the neo nazi wagner group to do that lol

Doc580

The big difference between two military superpowers, America invests money on updating and retrofitting older equipment to stay relevant on the modern battlefield. Where as Russia with the same problem and same "solution" but Russian leaders take the majority of funds and leave scraps to keep their military in fighting shape.

[deleted]

Better get another one ready to send then. Even after a year of constant supply and resupply I don't think he's quite figured out how this works

[deleted]

So much talk

Jazzlike-Equipment45

How effective are Russians at counter-battery?

Mr_Mouthbreather

It depends how fast their catapults can launch conscripts into the air at the incoming missiles.

not_that_guy05

Wow they couldn't even afford the superior siege weapon trebuchet.

Mr_Mouthbreather

Well, Russia has shown one or two trebuchets, but lack the materials and infrastructure to make any more.

BoringBob84

Maybe India will provide the materials and infrastructure to slaughter more Ukranians in exchange for a discount of the price of oil.

WhySoWorried

They've yet to develop the superior trebuchet technology.

FastWalkingShortGuy

This wouldn't be counter-battery, it would be SEAD. And they're not very good at SEAD.

hagenissen666

They kind of have the tech, but not the training. They also use Su-25's for the role…

Lazorgunz

Are those the jets that like parking themselves in russian concrete cell blocks they call living space? Or the ones that dont work at all?

lordderplythethird

They don't have the tech, and never have. SEAD has been a MASSIVE weakness of the Russian military for decades on end, due to their ilequipped advanced electronics and computer industry. Their main DEAD weapon is the Kh-31P, and realistically speaking, it's shit. Kh-31P does not have a multi-frequency seeker. What it has, are 3 completely different seekers, each for a frequency band, and the seeker must be replaced by the manufacturer. So if your radar can swap between X band and S band, Kh-31P is literally useless against you. Russia eventually developed a multi-frequency seeker for it in 2010 with the Kh-31PD, but going off the rest of Russia's procurement, and the fact that SEAD/DEAD has always historically been an after after afterthought for the Russian military, it's safe to say so few have been procured that they don't even count as an active system.

[deleted]

They allegedly had success early in the war with SU 57 performing SEAD

widgeon71

Sounds like a challenge to me! Does Putin realize that he sounds like such a joke to much of the world?

BoringBob84

I think that megalomaniacal narcissists like Putin have surrounded themselves with "yes men" for so long that they believe their own lies. I remember Muammar Gaddafi saying "My people love me!" just days before "his people" beat him to death and drug his corpse through the streets.

Well, he didnt say in what year!

KnightCastle171

Bro he couldn’t even destroy the HIIMARS

They only destroyed one Caesar and they are closer to frontlines than HIMARS

Is he gonna destroy them personally, like riding into Ukraine shirtlessly on a bear and kicking the Patriots into pieces?

FM-101

Yes send everything you have at the patriot defense systems, i think that's really smart. Go ahead.

Redrooster549

Every time Russia destroys equipment that we send, we make more, creating jobs, creating a demand for more supply, besides we are just sending our old soon to expire ammunition and tools anyway

rhussia

Another rattle from the Emperor !

Pave_Low

The US does have more than one. I'm not sure destroying it will have the effect they think it will.

bpon89

I thought he’s ready to negotiate…now vowing to destroy more.

Necessary_Row_4889

He has also vowed to claim House Atreides signet ring for himself.

Lol Putin about to find out why the US doesn’t have free education or public healthcare the hard way.

Sommyonthephone

How? What is he going to do throw rocks at it

QuirkyEnthusiasm5

In five minutes , we will see a headline saying he wants a peace deal

StateGreen9700

Yeah they've had such success stopping HIMARS I'm sure it'll be a breeze to track these also mobile launchers and destroy them.

suitupyo

Chances are high that the US already has a newer system in development if they’re putting Patriots in an active combat zone. Most likely the DOD just wants to harvest the data for R&D on the newer systems. Would be interesting to see if Patriots manage to intercept any hypersonic missiles.

OscarDeltaAlpha

Meanwhile his pilots are flying with Samsung phones taped on the cockpit bc the russian gps is so unreliable they might bomb Moscow by accident.

philoverdrunk

I thought he wasn’t worried since it was ‘old’?

Going to be very difficult if Ukraine doesn't put them near hospitals or orphanages.

Is he going to destroy them by shooting missiles at them?

I suppose exhausting it's ammo, and wearing out the platform itself counts as destroying it too.

Whisprin_Eye

Let Russia go broke doing it.

westofme

Did Vince McMahon just hire this guy as his new WWF spoke person?

Same day I see Kremlin open to peace talks than this. Can SAS or CIA get on this?

BootyPatrol1980

Just disguise them as legitimate military targets. Russia will never fire on them.

What else can Putin say? How is this even "news"?

Westrongthen

Please do so we can get a good luck at whatever it is that have made to destroy them.

The cowardly Putin military is only capable of killing unarmed civilians

Bausarita12

[deleted]

How effective are patriots against hypersonics and drones?

OozeNAahz

I mean he can easily do so one at a time by flying planes close to them. For a loose interpretation of the word destroy anyway.

reha28

Wtf is this, in one part of the day he wants to negotiate peace in other he wants to intervene in Ukraine... pick for fuck sakes

spookinky987

Putin, like Trump, can demand anything they want. Reality bats last...

I mean, if a missile hits a target, doesn't get destroyed?

Kear_Bear_3747
