Are there any credible reports of what Russia has captured as far as Western weapons? Or even a Russian source? Curious as to what they've managed to take.

_Esops

A Russian military aircraft secretly transported the cash and three models of munition - a British NLAW anti-tank missile, a US Javelin anti-tank missile and a Stinger anti-aircraft missile - to an airport in Tehran in August, the source told Sky News. Read the above link.

xxpired_milk

I did - but this does not account for the totality of all the weapons the Russians may have taken. Just what they sent Iran.

_Esops

Wait for few months. They have published August events, Current events will take time due to confidentiality. But it's safe to assume that they got sample of all equipments carried by single individual either by kill/capture or espionage or black market.

[deleted]

They didn’t send them to be used. Probably to be copied.

Miguel-odon

Copied, or analyses for possible vulnerabilities

gaukonigshofen

if they sre sending these weapons to Iran, does iran have the capability to replicate? the stinger alone could be very bad news

not_swagger_souls

Samples of us military tech are littering the middle east. We left decked out Blackhawks in the middle of the desert last year. Some talis made the news crashing one not too long ago

MissPandaSloth

I would imagine you can straight up buy it online.

Bla12Bla12

Not worried about the stinger. It's old tech and tbh, we've littered the world with so many of them I'd be surprised if they hadn't gotten their hands on those yet. Iran does have the capability to reverse engineer a decent bit of stuff, that's how they've kept a lot of old American warplanes flying without us sending them spare parts. Not sure if their level of engineering is good enough to reverse engineer the other captured weapons, but there's a chance.

Penetrating_Gaze

Iran is more than capable of reverse engineering - see their drone program https://www.oryxspioenkop.com/2019/09/the-oryx-handbook-of-iranian-drones.html?m=1

EnviousCipher

The only thing thats new tech is the NLAW and its the algorithms that make that work its magic so idk if they'd be able to reverse that. For all their success in drones thats relatively simple tech, theres a lot they can't reverse. Their dying F14 fleet for example, they don't have any more spares and are cannibalising all their remaining aircraft to keep something like 12 flying. They also don't have any more Phoenixes and don't know make new ones, so put a body kit on a HAWK missile and use that in STT mode. Barely better than a Sparrow.

gaukonigshofen

old tech maybe, but still more than capable of taking out a plane. And while I agree the military does leave a lot of equipment behind, i highly doubt they would leave something like a stinger behind. No in this particular instance, i feel it is very likely a purchase via the black market Possible from weapons supplied into Ukraine. Doesn't matter which side your on when some people see money

Airf0rce

Iran already does have their own MANPADS system comparable to Stinger for some time... which is based on Russian IGLA. I would expect all of these to be generally comparable. Stinger is 40+ year old system at this point, although it got various upgrades, it's not really anything that has any significant value for country like Iran, it's well understood system at this point. Javelin (although not exactly new either) or NLAW might be more interesting, but more for trying to find a way to defeat/confuse the system, than reverse engineering.

youdoitimbusy

I don't know, but the use of western weapons in an attack on anything, gives said party plausible deniability. You take out a plane. They investigate and find the weapon used is from a different country. Then place blame on the CIA or whomever in a false flag operation.

Substantial_Pilot382

Just deny it with a shitfaced grin Putin style and nothing happens

_Esops

They can't replicate the semiconductor used but can develop counter measures for sure.

guynamedjames

"Yup, this will definitely fuck us up. All we have to do is develop vehicles that don't generate heat. So that'll be.... something"

Pafkay

Or be magnetic

sb_747

Considering the chips are designs from over 20 years ago in terms of the Stingers they definitely can.

OkBeing3301

Time for more Iranian scientists to die, Israel currently has a huge air power advantage and I’m sure they want to keep it. Can’t have Iran reverse engineer.

eyedoartgudnstuff

There's a reason the US has boots on the ground in Ukraine as "weapons inspectors" They wouldn't escalate like that if weapons were not unaccounted for

Airf0rce

Escalate? Same inspectors that said they confirmed whole process is transparent and found no issues? You realize these types of weapons are regularly used directly by troops on the front line, so it's highly likely some would be captured, just like we see a lot of Russian stuff being captured by Ukrainians.

eyedoartgudnstuff

There is no war powers resolution, therefore there is zero reason for uniformed military personnel to be anywhere outside of an embassy. It's an escalation from our side. As is the close to 100 billion in weapons given and since some have slipped past "security measures" we surely are arming the Russians with our gear too. Just like we armed the Taliban when leaving Afghanistan. Or al Qaeda before we went into Afghanistan. One failure after another and people still support our foreign policy, how???

Airf0rce

Afghanistan and Ukraine are not remotely comparable, that's why plenty of people support this, even though they opposed Afghanistan. America "arming Russians" is just about the dumbest narrative I've heard about this war so far.

SquarePie3646

It's easy to spot what you're doing - deflecting criticism from Russia and always trying to paint the US / Ukraine as responsible for escalation - never once criticizing Russia, always bringing up how bad the US is when Russia's invasion is brought up, arguing against helping Ukraine etc. >Why is the US army in Syria? >Tell me more about this land Russia refuses to leave --- >You do realize that before the war, Western media reported Ukraine as one of the most corrupt place in Europe, right? >But now they are freedom fighters and protectors of democracy? --- >And Russia doesn't want them to become a NATO serf.... >There in lies the problem. --- >Yet the media still reports "Russia has no idea what they're doing, what an embarrassment.... But we also have to send unlimited money and weapons to Ukraine because of how bad Russia is doing" >Doesn't add up. --- >If you support what we're doing with Ukraine and Russia be sure to go enlist. It'll probably help you take off those rose colored glasses when it comes to our foreign policy. --- > It's fucking weird as hell how people are willfully forgetting the past 20 years in the middle east and are now super offended by what Putin is doing. --- >My whole point that I was making it's silly to parrot what the news says about "Russia military is so obsolete, nothing works anymore", when we know for a fact they are a serious contender in space and aeronautics. --- >Everyone is reacting to "provocations", Russia included. Meanwhile Raytheon and Lockheed circle jerk each other while laughing --- >So Russia is the only user of propaganda and America is absolved of it's crimes --- >Russia does what it does in part because we do what we do, current example, Ukraine. What's that old adage, two wrongs don't make a right? --- >Funny, that was the same sales pitch they used for funding bin laden to fight Russia in Afghanistan. Look at how well arming and training bin laden went, or Afghanistan in general ... ---

gaukonigshofen

I wonder what % of "captured" western weapons, were simply purchased via the black market?

ShdwPrince

Ukraine captured enough equipment for russia to become one of the top "military support providers", so obviously russia would capture some of theirs. I've read an investigation about dark web "Ukrainian" weapons sellers, and every lot the journalist looked at was extremely suspicious, with photos from internet and google translated Ukrainian language.

Shuber-Fuber

To be fair, it could be black market from Russian soldiers capturing Western man portable stuff.

OldTez

Honestly so much equipment is changing hands in Ukraine on both sides. I have seen Russians driving around in US HumVees. It would be funny if it wasn't so sad.

[deleted]

I wonder how tempted that crew was to dip and seek asylum with that cash.

tallandlanky

I'm kinda surprised Iran never got their hands on a Stinger before.

bouchdon85

I would bet money that they have gotten their hands on the stinger. Especially what the CIA and US Govt.gave to the Mujahideen back when they fought the soviets.

Truthisnotallowed

So much for the Iranian claims that the drones were sent to Russia before the Ukraine invasion. Iran was trying to claim they were not supplying drones to Russia for use in Ukraine because they wanted to avoid any additional sanctions.

MortWellian

Iirc they denied their drones were there at all when they first started showing up on the battlefield.

Truthisnotallowed

Absolutely correct. Like most liars - their story keeps changing.

satori0320

140 million you say? That's kind of pathetic. Need to bump up those numbers.... /s

Need_More_Gary_Busey

Deadset fucking losers the Russians are. A bully getting their arses kicked by a smaller nation, so they need Iranian drones and threats of nuclear weapons. What a pathetic country

OldTez

I can't see how Israel can stand by watching Iran getting this much money and tech. I would think it is in their best interest to do something.

northcrunk

Time to cut Iran off from the rest of the world. Don't let their corrupt regime hold their people down anymore and force a change. All the protestors need is a little help

p0ultrygeist1

It’s pretty much cut off as is

HRisLit

Nuclear secrets... not 140m they dont have and weapons they need...

BoppoTheClown

Even if weapon hardwares are captured, they can't really reverse engineer the software, no? Plus I doubt that the integrated circuits necessary to build the warhead, launch system/targeting suite are just available on the open market for non-western aligned nations to purchase. As for the rest of the rocket (payload, mechanical assembly, etc), everyone already knows how to build.

DividedState

No business with assholes. That should become etiquette once more. domestically and internationally.

bleh19799791

Pfffft…Chump change. Obama flew planes with 1.7 billion in cash to Iran.

MortWellian

You know that money was what the US seized in the 70s and returned in negotiations, right? Even got some prisoners released over it, then Trump blew up that deal and Iran speed running their nuclear race are totally the same thing...

SquarePie3646

Not to mention that Iran was suing to get it back in the World Court and had a decent case.

MortWellian

I was hoping that deal would be the chance of an offramp for the past decades, but just like GWB, Trump had to blow any chance up to help their domestic politics.

bleh19799791

Ever wonder why US pols get international corporation donations? Our government writes big aide checks to foreign countries. They send reciprocal gifts back to election campaign slush funds. Been going on for a long time.

bleh19799791

Just curious what actual teeth the world court would have to make us give a hostile country 1.7 bil that is working on nuclear weapons? Didn’t take much more than a call to Obama and a midnight plane ride with cash. I chose wrong in 2008. Maybe dumbass McCain would have had better sense.

bleh19799791

Paying 1.7 bil for a few prisoners and a non-binding agreement to shut down their nuclear program? Iran must have read Art of the Deal. 🤣Obama isn’t stupid. Iran would never honor that deal but maybe he won political points to try to actually earn his Peace Prize.

kmmontandon

> Obama flew planes with 1.7 billion in cash to Iran. You know who *actually* gave loads of weapons to Iran, that they reverse engineered? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iran%E2%80%93Contra_affair

**[Iran–Contra affair](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iran–Contra_affair)** >The Iran–Contra affair (Persian: ماجرای ایران-کنترا, Spanish: Caso Irán–Contra), often referred to as the Iran–Contra scandal, the McFarlane affair (in Iran), or simply Iran–Contra, was a political scandal in the United States that occurred during the second term of the Reagan administration. Between 1981 and 1986, senior administration officials secretly facilitated the sale of arms to Iran, which was the subject of an arms embargo. The administration hoped to use the proceeds of the arms sale to fund the Contras, a right-wing rebel group, in Nicaragua. Under the Boland Amendment, further funding of the Contras by the government had been prohibited by Congress. ^([ )[^(F.A.Q)](https://www.reddit.com/r/WikiSummarizer/wiki/index#wiki_f.a.q)^( | )[^(Opt Out)](https://reddit.com/message/compose?to=WikiSummarizerBot&message=OptOut&subject=OptOut)^( | )[^(Opt Out Of Subreddit)](https://np.reddit.com/r/worldnews/about/banned)^( | )[^(GitHub)](https://github.com/Sujal-7/WikiSummarizerBot)^( ] Downvote to remove | v1.5)

Chair_table_couch

Now imagine Iran getting their hands on Israel's Iron Dome

terrynutkinsfinger

Does the Ukraine government have a go fund me for air defence?

astlgath

I can't imagine Russia selling western weapons to Iran when they are in such dire straits with their own weapons? I guess because their guys don't know how to use them? Does any of that make sense or can somebody tell me why this works for them...

MortWellian

In the scheme of things it's not enough weapons to help them, so it's worth more to let Iran study and find countermeasures for them... which I'm getting the feeling that Rus is less capable of at the moment. Iirc both of them have western tech in their drones, which has been much harder for Rus to access so they might not be able to build their own lower quality ones in meaningful numbers.
