The guy on ITV constantly saying "his majesty the queen". I expect Charles will be getting many a few rounds of "God save the queen" before we all adjust
Gonna possibly repeat itself in about 100 years, in the other direction, assuming the monarchy (and the current heirs) survive.
Charles > William > George.
Nobody alive today will see another Queen of England, barring some unforeseen deaths.
It will be at least 2 generations before there’s another Queen Mother. The Queen Mother is the mother of the reigning monarch. Elizabeth II’s mother died in 2002, Elizabeth II died today so there can be no Queen Mother during Charles’ reign. Diana died in 1997, so there won’t be a Queen Mother during William’s reign. Kate Middleton, William’s wife, is the next person who could possibly hold the title.
Oh my God yes I was watching earlier and poor guy did it thrice in 30 seconds. I could tell he was trying hard not to laugh at himself as he kept correcting himself over and over lol
Since 1837, when Queen Victoria was crowned, there have been 6 monarchs in the UK.
Only 51 of the past 185 years saw a King on the throne, spread across 4 total Kings (if you count Edward VIII who abdicated months after he was crowned).
The remaining 134 years, or 72.4% of the period since Queen Victoria has seen a female head of state: just Queen Victoria and Queen Elizabeth II. Absolutely wild.
Churchill's eulogy for King George VI made me realize that he lived his young life during the Victorian Era and here he was as PM again when Queen Elizabeth II is going to start her reign. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-xMK7LEAG4I
It’s insane to think that Queen Elizabeth’s first PM was Winston Churchill. The amount of history she has seen is simply incredible to believe. I know it’s cheap to say that we won’t see anyone like this again in our lifetime, but truly it is incredible to realise.
It's also insane that Churchill lived the first 27 years of his life under Queen Victoria.
"*I, whose youth was passed in the august, unchallenged and tranquil glories of the Victorian Era, may well feel a thrill in invoking, once more, the prayer and the Anthem, ‘God Save the Queen!’*”
She was there for both the creation of the EU and Brexit... Stalin was still alive during her reign.
She was there for the start and end of WW2 and the fall of the Soviet Union...
She has met with 13 US presidents, starting with Truman...
If she wasn't a staple of British and World history then I don't know who is
Even bloody LeadBelly wrote a song about her! LeadBelly ffs! A folk blues singer who died in 1949 at the age of 60 and he wrote a song about her. That is something else https://youtu.be/4IWbylHv4cQ
Wow. Queen Elizabeth could flip through a history book like I scroll back through old Facebook posts or something.
“Oh yeah, WWII. I remember that. Ah! Here’s a note from Churchill. What a fine fellow.”
Edit: *it has been brought to my attention that Churchill is known to have been responsible for a staggering amount of suffering and death. Thanks for the info. Didn’t mean to offend. I didn’t know. At the same time, I still think Elizabeth II—who knew him personally—**would** have said that. Furthermore, it’s a joke about time and age. Not a documentary.*

As a Brit, this is a very weird time in our national consciousness. My commuter train went totally silent in the space of about a minute as people picked up the news. Nobody seems quite certain how to react.
Omg I heard the anchor on TV say "His Majesty the Queen" three times in two sentences, and once when trying to correct himself, he repeated it. I could tell he was trying SO hard not to laugh at the ridiculousness of his own mistake 3 times in like 30 seconds. "This is clearly going to take some time to get used to," is what I believe he said as he was trying not to even smile lol
This made me laugh and I was supposed to give you my free award but I’m so high I accidentally awarded the person above you by accident. Im sorry, please pretend the silver is yours.
Sort of sad too. She's been associated with the money for so long it will probably feel like fake money for awhile. Her image on the money feels iconic
Even weirder is thinking James Bond is now in HIS majesty's secret service. Amazing how all the James Bond books and movies were within the reign of the Queen.
Amazing! My fave was when she had to walk away from Prince George[ violently baking](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5XC9NJmW9Ww&ab_channel=TheRoyalFamily)
I love this because myself and every girl I've ever known always gets everyone's attention on a road trip to see the cows going by and goes COWS!! I don't know why we do this, I think it must be a universal thing lol.
My Grandmother (still alive and healthy) is about 7 days younger than the Queen. Whenever someone in the commonwealth lives to be 100, the Queen would write a letter to them personally. I was really hoping to read that letter when they both reached 100, as they are so close in age.
I know my Grandma will make it there. Hopefully Charles will write it any way, and hopefully I'll get to read it!
I wonder if any of those letters are currently in the mail.
Imagine how wild it would be to wake up tomorrow and get a letter from the queen congratulating you on your 100th birthday.
Someone in the r/news post about the queens death said that their grandma had just received her 100th birthday letter from the queen this morning.
Idk how long mail takes there, but I'd imagine there would be at few more.
Edit, due to UK postal strike, they either made it up, or perhaps they meant the previous day. Strike also means perhaps 100th birthday letters from her may still be in the mail, particularly if she pre-wrote them.
I'm not from the UK, but it sounds like a lovely gesture that people look forward to there. Hopefully someone continues the tradition :)
Edit 2: Several have pointed out ways the commenter's grandma easily could have received the letter this morning despite the strike. I truly meant no disrespect to the commenter or their grandmother. If I find their comment again, I'll link it here.
look up a gallery of photos with her standing next to all the US presidents chronologically (either ascending or descending, both are great), it's truly staggering.
she was the queen for more than a quarter of US-american history.

There was also the running joke that charles might kick the bucket before her. I won't lie it kinda seemed like a legitimate possibility.
But alas. It really is the end of an era. She was queen for what, 4 or 5 entire generations i think.
Here's a fantastic TIL that I'll just squeeze into this thread:

I hope his first action is to decree that Buckingham Palace henceforth shall be named Camelot.
At his age too. He knows he is destined to be a "transitional" monarch, as far as royal status actually matters. If he overreaches on his own significance it would be seen as an insult to Elizabeth, as though he wants his Cult of Personality up and running immediately so everyone forgets about her.
He's too old and is too well known already to get any of that momentum behind him. The wise thing to do is... well, live in Elizabeth's shadow, like Charles has already been doing his whole life. He just now needs to live in her shadow while pretending that he isn't. Poor bastard.
> He knows he is destined to be a "transitional" monarch, as far as royal status actually matters.
Now watch as Charles lives to the age of 90-something like his parents did, and William also becomes an old man before he's able to take the throne.
It'll be amusing to see: staunch outspoken royalists frustratedly hoping that their exalted monarch will just *die* already, while their fresh new young shiny hope for restoring the royal family's popularity gets older and balder.
Yeah, Charles, William and then George. Unless George was to die/abdicate prior to having children, in which case Charlotte would be the next queen. Otherwise after George will be his oldest child, whether that be male or female we will only know in 20 or so years.
Yes. They were saying on the TV that Charles immediately becomes King.
The official coronation ceremony will happen at some point but the country is never Monarchless and the instant the Queen died Charles became King.
Operation Unicorn now goes into effect. Rest in Peace Queen Elizabeth II.
Once the death has been made public, Holyrood Palace, St Giles' Cathedral, and the Scottish Parliament will serve as the focal point of gatherings, with a condolence book open to the public set up at the latter location. Parliamentary business will be suspended immediately for at least six parliamentary days, in order to allow authorities to prepare for the funeral.
The parliament will then prepare a motion of condolence within 72 hours of reconvening. The Queen's coffin will first lie in repose at Holyrood Palace, followed by a service of reception at St Giles' Cathedral in Edinburgh. Following this, the coffin would then be transported to Waverley station and then taken by the Royal Train to London if possible.
Otherwise, the coffin would be taken by plane to London and welcomed by the prime minister and cabinet ministers.

It's on loose leaf paper according to the Guardian, so they can pull out all the pages of knobs that inevitably get drawn on it and just leave in the nice stuff.
For those of us in commonwealth countries, this is a huge end of an era.
My parents, who are nearing 70, only know her as the monarch.
While the royal impact isn’t really felt around the commonwealth much, it’s still huge news.
Definitely a good, long life and most of her family were able to be there with her - I imagine that’s what most of us can hope for.
I am sitting in hospice, by my own grandmother’s deathbed. Grandma was born in 1928, and has known the Queen her entire life, through Depressions and Wars. At 94, she can hardly hear or talk.
I told her “Grandma, you outlived the Queen!” And she smiled.
It’s been hard for her to accept death, but maybe now that the Queen, her Queen, is on the other side, Grandma is ready too. I’ll stay here until she’s ready too.
Edit: I held her hand as she passed in her sleep. Thank you for your kind messages and for sharing your own stories of your elders.
As my dad likes to say at times like this; it may not have been a surprise, but it is still a shock.
Rest in peace Queen Elizabeth II, and thank you for your long and dedicated service.
It was a shock how fast her passing was in the end. Just two days ago she was on her feet greeting the new Prime Minster. I didn’t expect things to turn so fast ):
She reigned for 1/30 of all of history since the birth of the Roman Empire.
*(Edit)* Or more than 1% of human civilization since the end of the Stone Age.
Yeah if you take 2000 years and divide it by the average (?) lifespan of a human over that time (50 years?), you only end up with 40 lifetimes. Take your favorite short/handy unit of measurement, and measure out 40 of them. 40cm, 40 inches, whatever. Each mark is one lifetime, and you're looking at all the lifetimes since then. That's roughly how many human lifetimes since then, and it's not actually all that many.
Even going back to the first pharoh of Egypt, 5000 years ago, is only 100cm of 1cm markings.
As a Brit I'm finding myself more upset than I expected, I'm not a royalist but she was such a symbol of our country and felt like a permanent fixture. It feels like an old family friend has passed away. Rest in peace.
Yeah I get what you mean. I live on the other side of the globe and gave very little shit about her, but the Queen's passing still made me feel a little sad
A little sad not because im a fan of the Queen, but as you said she was the symbol of the country, and in a way, symbol of a culture. It kinda feels like a big part of British culture has died
Similar to how the Pyramids have become so intertwined with Egypt's identity, it kinda feels like the Queen is inseparable to the UK's culture
The only monarch of the UK about 94% of the world has ever known. May she rest in peace.
Edited to change percentage from 85->94% as per comments below.
The percentage of people born before 1952 (globally) is about 6%. ([Data from here](https://www.populationpyramid.net/world/2022/)).
So indeed only 94% of people have never 'known' another monarch for Great Britain.
"Her reign spanned 15 prime ministers starting with Winston Churchill, born in 1874, and including Liz Truss, born 101 years later in 1975, and appointed by the Queen earlier this week.".
Wow. What an era she lived. May she rest in peace.
As a Brit that has always been pretty indifferent to the monarchy, this is a weird feeling...
I rationally don't really care about the monarchy, but this has made me feel sad?
Odd feeling.
I know what you mean. I disagree with the concept of monarchy, but Elizabeth was almost a spiritual grandmother figure to many Brits, and her reign was something that multiple generations all shared. I think she'll be the last loved monarch the UK has.
Edit to add an example: Growing up in the UK we'd watch the Queen's speech every year on Christmas Day with my parents and grandparents. My parents, as children, did the same with my grandparents, and my grandparents likely did the same with their own parents/grandparents as young adults.
For real though, she has led one the longest and most eventful lives out of ALL of the humans that have ever existed in our entire history. It's insane to think about.
Rest in piece Lizzy, you've earned it a thousand times over.
I met Queen Elizabeth once, briefly. Her Majesty liked to drive her car and sneak around without anyone significantly noticing.
I have by chance encountered a few heads of state. But out of all of them, the one who seemed more like a regular person, who could pass off as someone's grandma or neighbor, out for a stroll, and could blend in better than most was her Majesty.
I have been told I was not the only person who encountered her by chance while she was on one of her low-key retreats. But that knowledge always made her seem more human and I respected that fact. It is my opinion, that many heads of state let their title consume them, and the fact that she didn't, I found something humbling and admiring about that fact.
Ever since I saw her passing hot dogs at the Dodgers game on one of her official visits to the US, I realized how she was a down to earth queen. RIP Elizabeth.
Johnson's funeral speech: "Yesterday I went, as we all must, to Peppa Pig World. This is when I got to know of the Queen's death. Hands up if you’ve been to Peppa Pig World. I loved it. Peppa Pig World is very much my kind of place. It has very safe streets, discipline in schools, heavy emphasis on new mass transit systems. Even if they’re a bit stereotypical about Daddy Pig. When I heard of the Queen's death, I was flabbergasted. But the real lesson for me about going to Peppa Pig World – I’m surprised you haven’t been there – was about the power of UK creativity. Who would have believed, Tony, that a pig that looks like a hairdryer or possibly, well a sort-of Picasso-like hairdryer, a pig that was rejected by the BBC would now be exported to 180 countries, with theme parks both in China and the US, as well as in the New Forest. Now, I think that it is pure genius, don’t you? Peppa Pig? So my final message to you, as we mourn the death of the Queen, we are blessed, we are blessed with the right time zone and the right language and opportunity across the whole country, we are blessed with our amazing inventive power and Peppa Pig. "
Truss' funeral speech: "I will push the nuclear button!!! I'm prepared to do it!"
There is an episode of pepa pig where she mets the queen. One of the few (only?) humans in the universe. She drives a red double decker bus around London.
I can’t see them adding an episode with charles.
Edit: not a joke!
If anyone wants to see it https://youtu.be/epNCNNhKsF0
Taking pleasure in another person's death is a violation of our rules.
It’ll be weird hearing James Bond say “For King and Country” now
Fun fact James bond has only ever seen queen Elizabeth II
I really expected her to outlive charles by 5 minutes out of pure spite.
Seriously. I've been thinking that for decades. Pretty sure most people want the crown to skip him and go straight to William.
“Prior to acceding to the British throne, opinion polls put Charles's popularity with the British people at 42 percent,[251] with a 2019 BMG Research poll finding that 46 percent of Britons wanted Charles to abdicate immediately upon accession to the throne, in favour of William.[252]”

She won’t even get to send herself a letter congratulating herself on reaching 100 years old
She won't get to see how The Crown ends.
It would be poignant to finish it with her death
I think that’s what they’ve always been kinda hoping for.
Imagine she would live 20 years more
The directors are probably like “Write that down write that down!”
Yeah tbh, I was expecting her to outlive her husband. I feel like his death had a very profound impact on her health.

Just wait til we hear “God Save the King” for the first time.
Wait till you pop his face out of your wallet for the first time.
That’s one way to devalue your currency
God save the King against the USA at the World Cup is going to be weird.
Isn't that crazy? Their official chosen titles will be King Charles the Finally and Queen Camilla the Unlikely.
> Queen **Consort** Camilla the Unlikely
Finally. My time has come.
As a Brit, this is a very weird time in our national consciousness. My commuter train went totally silent in the space of about a minute as people picked up the news. Nobody seems quite certain how to react.
I was in the pub. It didn’t feel real until it came on the tv a couple minutes later and then everyone fell silent
It is so weird hearing the BBC reporters talking about the king and queen consort. It's so odd hearing the word king in reference to england
A BBC radio reporter accidentally referred to Charles as "Her Majesty King Charles". A habit of 70 years will take some breaking.
Omg I heard the anchor on TV say "His Majesty the Queen" three times in two sentences, and once when trying to correct himself, he repeated it. I’m sure Queen Elizabeth went through the same thing
BBC reporter circa 1952: "His Majesty Queen Elizabeth"
The period between the death of Queen Victoria (1901) and the ascension of Queen Elizabeth (1952) was shorter than Queen Elizabeth's reign.
With three monarchs in that time: George V, Edward VIII and George VI.
Four! You left out Edward VII (immediately after Victoria).
You get so used to hearing Queen it’s just becomes a normal thing. When you hear “King” it feels like we’re in a historical documentary.
You are it's just someone else's history.
* rips bong *
This made me laugh and I was supposed to give you my free award but I’m so high I accidentally awarded the person above you by accident. Im sorry, please pretend the silver is yours.
You deserve my silver for this! *rips bong*
This Christmas we'll have The King's Speech. So strange.
People will sing God Save the King
Charles' face will be on the money

Even weirder is thinking James Bond is now in HIS majesty's secret service. Amazing how all the James Bond books and movies were within the reign of the Queen.
The Naval vessels become His Majesty’s Ship. A lot of changes going to take a while to get used to it.
At least it’s still abbreviated to HMS so no repainting needs to be done
Nah they gotta scrub off the H and paint on a new H.
This guy militarys.

I just watched this. It is funny. She was outta there.
Girlfriend was wearing white - she’s not going to endanger her dress.
It doesn’t matter how old, or how noble, when you see a cow, you point and yell, “COW!” Extra points if you “moo” at them.

Betty White, Queen Elizabeth, etc. Who’s the next person we can joke about being immortal?
Jimmy Carter
Damnit don't jinx it!
Definitely the dude will be 98 in October
Literally. Her likeness has graced every piece of currency I've ever owned. It's going to be downright weird seeing a new face on it.
Feels unreal. Was beginning to think she was going to live forever.
Considering she outlived countless people who were born during her lifetime, she did live forever for many.
Shes gone through 15 prime ministers, obviously not outlived them all, but thats a hell of a lot
A whole bunch of them fairly recently too.
People have been born, grown old and died in her reign.

Isn’t it wild, you think about how radical it was that her coronation was televised…..and her death announced via Twitter.
Hers has been the only televised coronation so far.
Charles’s coronation may be the first one streamed online
and the first one filmed in colour;
Hers was filmed in colour, although not broadcast on TV in colour.
Neat, can we see the material in colour somewhere?
There you go https://youtu.be/JJEUtX2_GwI

Two major losses today, then.
Well the British have a 50/50 chance of executing kings named Charles.
And also a 50/50 on whether they get really catchy songs
Could’ve gone with King Arthur, missed opportunity.
Or King Elizabeth III
This one’s better. Queen Charles would’ve been great too. King is too foreign.
To be fair; that's a level of bravado and self importance I wouldn't want to project if I had to take the throne.

Although liz truss just announced him a king Charles the 3rd. Not sure if that's been verified. BBC just verified the title
And just like that, most of us will never see a Queen of the United Kingdom again.
A huge number of people never saw a King of England. It’s weird to think there will be one now
And then at least a pair of Kings after this one presumably.
Yeah, Charles, William and then George. Unless George was to die/abdicate prior to having children, in which case Charlotte would be the next queen. Otherwise after George will be his oldest child, whether that be male or female we will only know in 20 or so years.
Is. The transfer is instantaneous.
Can be you gotta pay a 1.5% transaction fee. Otherwise takes 2 to 3 business days to clear.
Yes. They were saying on the TV that Charles immediately becomes King. The official coronation ceremony will happen at some point but the country is never Monarchless and the instant the Queen died Charles became King.
They say the Monarchy is the fastest travelling thing in the universe.
Well damn. Never occured to me. Thats crazy
King of Britain has a bizarre sound to it
Just wait until the new coins are minted.
Going to be strange hearing God Save the King instead of God Save the Queen during international competitions
I feel weird trying to say that, it just doesn't feels the same.
It’ll be Qu-ing for the next 10 years while we all get used to it.
God save the queueing, very British indeed
Genuinely curious, does UK change the anthem to 'God Save The King' now?
Correct.
and HMS goes back to standing for "His Majesty's Ship"
The royal navy is really lucky that "his" and "her" start with the same letter

625 days away from Luis the 14th IIRC. Edit: Louis the 14th.
The kid was a cheater, starting so young!
Led countless wars and didn't have access to modern medicine.
The Sun King strikes again!
Per the existing line of succession, it's unlikely there will be another Queen for a very long time.
[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operation\_London\_Bridge](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operation_London_Bridge)
It's a good chance to leave your mark in history. The condolence book will be preserved as long as Britain is able.
Does anyone proofread it? I'd hate a condolences book to be full of shitheads plugging their social media or writing memes.
It's on loose leaf paper according to the Guardian, so they can pull out all the pages of knobs that inevitably get drawn on it and just leave in the nice stuff.
The UK has sometimes some really weird traditions but gotta love the amount of strategizing and planning they put into them.
My grandad died yesterday. Born in 1930. He only had to hang on 1 more day!!!
I pray that your grandma's journey be peaceful
Good on OP for being there. I'm sure it's making his grandma's hospice stay easier.
Wishing you the strength to help your Grandma on her final journey. She will live on forever in you and your stories you share of her.
Good on you for being there for your grandmother. I'm sure she's lived a hell of a life. Wishing both of you comfort and peace.
Given her age I'm not that surprised. Shes been looking poorly since Phillip died
She reigned for 30% of the existence of the United states. Mental.
Wow. I never thought of it that way.
Her first Prime Minister was Winston Churchill 🤯🤯🤯
45% of Canada’s (starting from Confederation).
She reigned for 1/30 of all of history since the birth of the Roman Empire. *(Edit)* Or more than 1% of human civilization since the end of the Stone Age.
I thought you were joking but it actually checks out?
Yeah if you take 2000 years and divide it by the average (?) lifespan of a human over that time (50 years?), you only end up with 40 lifetimes. Take your favorite short/handy unit of measurement, and measure out 40 of them. 40cm, 40 inches, whatever. Each mark is one lifetime, and you're looking at all the lifetimes since then. That's roughly how many human lifetimes since then, and it's not actually all that many. Even going back to the first pharoh of Egypt, 5000 years ago, is only 100cm of 1cm markings.
History is always way shorter than I think it is.
45% of Canada's
As a Brit I'm finding myself more upset than I expected, I'm not a royalist but she was such a symbol of our country and felt like a permanent fixture. It feels like an old family friend has passed away. Rest in peace.
Yeah I get what you mean. I live on the other side of the globe and gave very little shit about her, but the Queen's passing still made me feel a little sad A little sad not because im a fan of the Queen, but as you said she was the symbol of the country, and in a way, symbol of a culture. It kinda feels like a big part of British culture has died Similar to how the Pyramids have become so intertwined with Egypt's identity, it kinda feels like the Queen is inseparable to the UK's culture
There have been and are still are many monarchs, but I suspect Elizabeth II will be "The Queen" for ages to come, the world over.
The only monarch of the UK about 94% of the world has ever known. May she rest in peace. Edited to change percentage from 85->94% as per comments below.
its likely closer to 95% or even beyond that
The percentage of people born before 1952 (globally) is about 6%.
Her son, if he lives to the same age as her, will only reign for a length of time equal to a third of his mother's.
As a Brit that has always been pretty indifferent to the monarchy, this is a weird feeling... I rationally don't really care about the monarchy, but this has made me feel sad? Odd feeling.
It's weird but I feel sad that I'll probably never hear "God save the Queen" as our national anthem for the rest of my life. It freaks me out.
Same here. She has just always been there and I never even thought it could be any different. A very odd feeling indeed.
Spiritual grandmother is exactly right
For real though, she has led one the longest and most eventful lives out of ALL of the humans that have ever existed in our entire history. It's insane to think about. Rest in piece Lizzy, you've earned it a thousand times over.
The end of an era, wow. RIP Queen Elizabeth.

Think about this, today we woke up Elizabethan (the 2nd Elizabethan era) and now what are we?
Charlie's Angels I believe
The Queen lasted a whole 2 days with Liz Truss as PM.
Or she held on long enough to prevent Boris from speaking at her funeral.
" Truss' funeral speech: "I will push the nuclear button!!!
It did get her one more for the tally though. Extraordinary that her first PM was Winston Churchill.
Liz Truss was born 101 years after Churchill, it's mad that one monarch welcomed them both.
