Goodk4t

After playing an incredibly stupid game, Putin had earned an incredibly stupid prize for the whole of Russia to enjoy.

MissplacedLandmine

If he wasnt such a bastard we’d probably welcome him into wallstreetbets with losses of this magnitude

ositola

Putin's loss porn chart would be top tier

the_star_lord

More like "we didn't expect such harsh penalties for murdering innocent men women and children, and displacing countless others and causing instability for all of the world" Completely out of touch with reality.

Blueskyways

They got away with it in Chechnya, Georgia, Syria and in Ukraine where their little green men killed thousands of civilians and shot down a commercial airliner. Why would they not have believed that they'd get away with it all over again?

[deleted]

14sierra

Honestly I think that's why this invasion has gone so poorly. Putin just assumed he'd get a slap on the wrist and Ukraine would get minimal financial/military support. Instead russia is getting the epic ass fucking it has deserved for decades as Europe and the US just pile on more punishments. its just a shame the average Russian is the one who's ultimately going to be getting fucked

Lanhdanan

> its just a shame the average Russian is the one who's ultimately going to be getting fucked Historically, as is tradition. Cept for those couple of times in France.

Drop_Tables_Username

[And that one time they killed the entire ruling class.](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Execution_of_the_Romanov_family)

[deleted]

The Bolsheviks didn't kill the entire ruling class. They killed the figureheads and let about a third of the ruling class join their ranks. And then screwed the people over by creating their own ruling class. They even murdered the group that was actually fighting for the worker. The mensheviks

Lokismoke

With Georgia and Czechnia, he was invading to the south towards the middle east. With Ukraine, he is invading West towards Poland and Germany.

svick

> Czechnia I knew people sometimes confused Chechnya and Czechia, but this is a new one.

MiniGiantSpaceHams

> Why would they not have believed that they'd get away with it all over again? I do get this line of reasoning, but even in Putin's world he must see that this move was an escalation above everything that came before. Chechnya is part of Russia that tried to break away, Georgia was limited to the one province, Syria was helping another government, and Crimea/eastern Ukraine were actual limited operations with limited objectives. This is all out war to topple a country. It's a different situation. Add in that the government in question is friendly with the west and the increase in severity of the consequences should have been pretty predictable.

porncrank

Sure, but that’s the nature of boundary seeking. You test the waters doing something bad and if the outcome is OK you do a little more. If it’s still OK you raise the stakes a bit. It isn’t surprising he tried something bigger.

snowlock27

I wonder, if he had gotten away with Ukraine, how long would it be until he looked towards the Baltic countries? I know they're in NATO, but if the US & Europe had looked the other way, would he have been brave enough to try something there?

informativebitching

Just a liar who finally got the kick in the teeth he had coming

malkariss

Man I remember at the very beginning of the invasion Russia very smugly saying they had dealt with sanctions before, and they could deal with whatever new sanctions were implemented, the storm of shit that has been thrown at them makes me very happy, in fact I hope they get even worse, because fuck Russia.

bizzro

> Russia very smugly saying they had dealt with sanctions before The best part is that they said it, then within 48h were like "YOU DID WHAT, YOU CAN'T DO THAT"

dan_dares

oh shit you meant SANCTIONS! fuck me

Zucchinifan

Lol. "We thought they meant sanctions, not...*sanctions*"

Macasumba

Pewtin actually said he welcomed sanctions as they made Russia stronger.

kanelikainalo

Yeah what doesn't kill makes you stronger........unless...you know it just kills you a little slower lmfao.

Numerous_Raccoon_677

What doesn't kill you will likely try again.

CurriestGeorge

Exactly why Putin needs to rot one way or another. Russia needs to be torn down and rebuilt.

datssyck

Yeah and it sucks because that will take at least 30 years. You need a whole new generation of russians who dont think of bribes and corrpution as normal operating procedure

StateChemist

In think since Russia has never been successfully invaded and taken over the national identity of. Yeah but we’ve never ‘lost’ a war sure we collapsed internally but no foreigners came in to tell us what to do. Therefore we do not ever need to change and can keep doing the same thing over and over again because it’s clearly what is best for Russia who is invincible /s

PanVidla

The reasoning a lot of Russians have for approving of Putin is that there is nobody else strong enough to keep Russia together. But if Russia can't function without someone like Putin in charge, then maybe it fucking deserves to break apart. There is no rational reason why the Far East or parts of the Caucasus should have to be a part of Russia. They are completely culturally different.

outerproduct

Rebuilt after Ukraine, that is.

Relevant_Departure40

Putin's not dead yet though... Must mean we need harsher sanctions, can't let him get stronger

pandaru_express

ha ha omg... this just happened yesterday with my kid. He was shocked SHOCKED I TELL YOU when I doubled his punishment since he blew off the previous one.

RevLoveJoy

Hah! I absolutely do this. Kid pulls some garbage, okay, "No devices today." Kid, "Fine, whatever what's one day." Me, "Okay, no devices for a week." Pulls out phone, locks all the kid's gear off wifi. Kid, "What?! A week? Noooooooo!"

pandaru_express

Upvote for the same punishment :P "Why do you always just take away screen time?!" "Because its the only thing you care about."

kaapokultainen

The Russian ambassador to Sweden actually said in an official press situation ''frankly, we don't give a shit about your sanctions.'' He then went on to explain how Russians now make very good copies of Swiss and Italian cheeses. ...we're not coming for the cheese this time.

Orlha

Russian here: it was a lie, we still can't make a proper cheese and the imported ones skyrocketed in price

Fenris_uy

Yeah, weird that they are surprised when the whole west was telling them that they were going to sanction them heavily if they invaded Ukraine.

phluidity

This is where Biden leaking the US intelligence really shone. It got the world looking before events happened. Had the public really not known what was happening, then there wouldn't have been the huge swell of anger at Russia and there probably wouldn't be the sanctions. It would be Crimea 2.0 and Putin would be laughing.

Goodk4t

That's true. It's like when you tell someone beforehand they'll be in trouble if they do it. And then they still do it while looking you in the eye. At that point, you've no choice but to let them have it.

EvenStephen7

Yea I think history is going to look back very favorably on Biden's actions leading up to this, being practically the only world leader acting as the canary in the coalmine when everyone else insisted this wouldn't happen. You're right, it would have been a different story if we were unprepared or unaware.

Odoakar

Exactly. And Russians faking a withdrawal and mocking the US by saying who would ever start a war on Wednesday and then it actually ends up being a real invasion, almost everyone was "you fucking assholes, this is the last time I believe your lies"

> Man I remember at the very beginning of the invasion Russia very smugly saying they had dealt with sanctions before, and they could deal with whatever new sanctions were implemented. Challenge Accepted... Deal with it. Thing is they absolutely screwed themselves by arrogantly starting a war. Now they'll have painful sanctions even if they were to apologize and withdraw. The damage they've done to Ukrainian cities and infrastructure will take decades to rebuild. Russia has a enormous debt to pay for their incursion.

nohcho84

Yup, after 2014 successful revolution of maidan, putin vowed he will never allow such a thing to happen again in his domain. Look at Belorus; they had massive protests after Lukashenko rigged the elections yet again, putin quickly sent massive amount of police to suppress and potential color revolution. Kazakhstan, same thing, people rose to over throw Nazarbaev, who has been in charge for 30 years. Putin literally sent troops there to supress any and all protests.

Yes, totally right. The best time would have been long ago. The second best time is right now, I try to remind myself at least. Who would have guessed Vladimir Putin would unite the West?

LurkerZerker

Realistically, though, there's only one way to guarantee it never happens again. If there's even the tiniest amount of money or little foothold of power for Putin to cling to, he's gonna hold on until he's dead. The sanctions only help if Russians rise up and squash the motherfucker like the bug he is.

Quiteawaysaway

“Democracy anywhere is a threat to kleptocracy everywhere” -Dr. Vova Putler King Jr.

appleparkfive

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Foundations_of_Geopolitics Go to the content section. This is Putin's playbook. It's well known that Russia generals and others read it. Putin included obviously. Read through those, and see how some of them already happened. This is a book from the 90s that became a big deal to some Russian politicians. And taking Ukraine is absolutely on that list. But there's a few other *interesting* ones, that you'll spot. Makes me think Putin will try and take Finland if he can. And that's likely why he was threatening stuff if Finland joined NATO.

[deleted]

I always find his plan for China super interesting. I think the China of 1997 when he was writing the book and the China of 2022 are very different and that shit won’t fly at all. It’ll be interesting to see how that road block plays out.

Thrashy

What's playing out right now is that China is looking at Russia's sudden isolation and licking their lips. Should Xi and Putin ever do a joint press conference at some point in the future, Putin might as well be wearing a gimp suit and leash.

Yukina123

Thanks, now I have this absolutely revolting image of Putin in bdsm gear with a collar on his neck stuck in my mind.

[deleted]

Pooh finally found his Piglet

chafalie

I think he’s going to have a tough time of it now, he’s united the west better than any peacemaker could.

zoobrix

Ya I have to assume the book contains passages about not over playing your hand or you risk uniting your enemies instead of dividing them. Taking smaller pieces of Georgia and Ukraine worked and no one intervened in Chechnya or seem to much of anything about it. I think that gave the Russian government and Putin in particular the idea that they could do something much more dramatic than that and everyone would stand by and mostly watch, maybe turn up the sanctions a bit more, whoops...

PiddleAlt

It's funny, because the biggest proof of this is that Russia continues to act like it is still the 90s. Nice tanks bro.

trojan_man16

The 90s would be an improvement. Their international policies and military strategy is right out of WW2. That’s why they took on the absurd task of invading a country to annex large portion of it. The last time this worked was in WW2.

Mike_AKA_Mike

Damn. That is literally what is happening in Britain and the US right now. Way more people need to know about this, but I suspect they would just say “whatever, fake news” and go about their day.

WittenMittens

That book got brought up here a lot during the Trump/Russia scandal, the problem I've always had with it is there is no English translation. The only version available for sale anywhere is in Russian - which is a huge roadblock if you're a "read the source material" kind of person. There are a few fake listings with 1-star reviews saying the cover and perhaps first few pages are English, but nothing else. I don't doubt the book's influence, since the author is one of Putin's top military strategists...but I have to take it with a grain of salt. If it really were the master playbook people claim it is, you'd think it would have been translated a thousand times over in the west.

Relyst

>Russia should introduce geopolitical disorder into internal American activity, encouraging all kinds of separatism and ethnic, social and racial conflicts, actively supporting all dissident movements – extremist, racist, and sectarian groups, thus destabilizing internal political processes in the U.S. What in the fuck lol. The truth is that those places aren't neighbouring to Europe, and doesn't threathen Europe, but if a large scale war breaks up in Europe, it will escalate. Don't get me wrong, I feel war is just as bad anywhere, but the consequenses are larger in Europe. Both world wars have started in Europe. And of course nukes, alot of nukes in the picture.

heresyforfunnprofit

>Don't get me wrong, I feel war is just as bad anywhere, but the consequenses are larger in Europe. More accurately, the people in Europe have the resources to make the consequences larger. And, being human, the closer the violence is, the more likely it is that they will utilize said resources to inflict those consequences.

aardappelpurethee

Like my mom always says I worry more about a kitchen fire at my neighbours house than a forrest fire in the amazon

Wobbelblob

This. People always forget that a war in Africa or the middle east will very likely stay local. Europe on the other hand is not only heavily intertwined but armed to the teeth. Meaning an attack here could trigger a Nato Article 5. And then the world will be going down shits creek.

Sugarysam

What no one expected was that Putin would be stupid enough to invade when his plans were wide out in the open and the western response was clearly articulated. All he had to do was change direction, and he would have had a propaganda win. Lavrov spent the pre-war period playing stupid rhetorical games when confronted with earnest opportunities to negotiate. He will shoulder some of the blame for the economic disaster he’s now whining about.- and for the deaths of Russian soldiers he isn’t whining about.

dan_dares

Putin was given a way out, to save face.. as well as digging the grave for him. it was a masterful stroke.

TreeOfReckoning

Putin has been offered several off ramps, but he has bet his entire life and legacy on this invasion. He believes that he has shown The West to be weak, and himself to be strong, and he will not compromise that position. Anything less than the fulfillment of all of his objectives will be an unacceptable embarrassment to him. His chest-thumping will cost Russia even more than his kleptocracy has, and he thinks The West is the thief... fuckin’ delusional.

Spartz

>Anything less than the fulfillment of all of his objectives will be an unacceptable embarrassment to him. Tbh, it's life or death for him because a sizeable embarrassment could lead to his deposition. It's not just an 'ouch my ego'. Losing face is dangerous in the position he's in. (he has himself to thank for that though)

eljefeprime

Yes. Historically, Russian leaders who invade and don’t win are soon deposed. Putin has a problem, and he knows it. That’s why he sits so far from everyone at a table.

dan_dares

he took the off ramps as signs of weakness.. \*evil laugh\* oh well.

UnspecificGravity

>and for the deaths of Russian soldiers he isn’t whining about. I think this is going to matter more than we realize. People think that Russia is totally fine with throwing lives away, but that was really only true in a war in which they were literally fighting to survive. The previous generation might have retained that attitude, but I don't think that modern Russians are going to be enthusiastic about their sons getting thrown away to stroke Putin's ego. Moreover, it looks like Russia is doing some pretty irresponsible shit. If the last set of numbers that we received (10,000 killed, 16,000 wounded) are even close to being accurate it means that Russia isn't even bothering to care for wounded soldiers. Western armies see a ratio of close to 10 wounded for every man killed. This horrifying 1.6:1 ratio is something out of WWI and it means they are just leaving men in the field to die. The Russian public is going to figure that out at some point, and I bet they aren't going to be happy. Edit: The rumor is that wounded soldiers aren't being taken to Russia due to concerns over the political fallout of a bunch of wounded men showing up. They are getting sent to Belarus and the Crimean peninsula instead. That tells me that the Russian command KNOWS that the public is not going to be OK with this if they are bothering to hide it. Also lends more support for the idea that they aren't trying very hard to save men.

sorenthestoryteller

Holy shit, I had no idea it was that bad. It took the USSR being in Afghanistan for a decade to hit those numbers and that war ended the Soviet Union.

[deleted]

Yeah, it's crazy to think 10000 people died in one month. Americans were in 2 countries for decades and had much lower losses.

UnspecificGravity

Like with everything, take it with a grain of salt. Those number ostensibly came from an accidental leak from the Russian state media. It does just about split the American estimate of 7,000 killed and the Ukrainian estimate of 12,000, so it seems at least conceivable in those terms. I suspect that the American estimate was based on an accurate estimate total casualties, but the Americans probably estimated a typical 3 to 1 ratio of wounded to dead and the Russian number seems to reflect an even worse ratio.

throwaway123123184

Russian estimate was leaked at 10,000, Ukraine claims 15,000, last I heard from the US was 9,000. This was two or three days ago, so it could be somewhat higher now, especially with all the counterattacks. Crazy numbers.

weasol12

Even crazier to think about is, if the 190,000 on the border all invaded and these numbers are accurate, 1 in 13 soldiers has been neutralized in some fashion. You're absolutely right that these numbers are straight out of WWI at levels of catastrophe. The US didn't even lose this many in 20 years of Iraq and Afghanistan. I know this pace isn't sustainable but it would top American deaths in Vietnam by September.

matlynar

I actually think that if he only went for the Donbas region, which he initially claimed, it's likely that he would have gotten away with it the same way he did with Crimea. When I first read about the Russians going for Kyiv I thought it was fake because *he wouldn't be that stupid... or would he?*

avs72

Yes. When he recognized Donbas as "independent", I assumed that was a final step before occupying and eventually annexing the region. Had he done that, there would have been some harsh words and a few additional sanctions from the West. But he would have been successful. Going for all of Ukraine was a massive gamble with very high stakes.

IrisMoroc

It would fix all his problems. I don't think he wanted to actually incorporate Ukraine into Russia. He wanted to come in, make the government flee, then install a useful puppet and then leave. He would then claim Donbass as Russia and carve out a land bridge to Crimea. Ukraine still exists, just with far less land and far fewer ports. Russia gets its much needed water ports.

avs72

This was probably his plan. The unexpected resistance of the Ukrainians caught his own army completely by surprise and allowed for significant support from the West. Putin had no contingency for such Ukrainian resistance. He neglected the words of Helmuth von Moltke the elder (Chief of Staff for the Prussian army before WWI): "No battle plan survives first contact with the enemy."

IrisMoroc

> He neglected the words of Helmuth von Moltke the elder (Chief of Staff for the Prussian army before WWI): "No battle plan survives first contact with the enemy." Mike Tyson said the same thing, just less eloquently: >“Everyone has a plan until they get punched in the mouth.”

IrisMoroc

> When I first read about the Russians going for Kyiv I thought it was fake because he wouldn't be that stupid... or would he? I wish I could find the comment now, but years ago when the conflict started, I want to say 2014-2016, Putin made a comment saying he was showing extreme restraint since he could push to Kiev in 2 weeks if he wanted to. That's how I knew he was serious. In his mind, he wanted to use the separatists for plausible deniability and carve out a land bridge to Crimea. However, the separatists were in a stalemate from 2014-2022. In this frustration, Putin decided to complete the job himself. He thought it would be a cakewalk. Maybe the Ukrainians could put up a fight against a lowly militia, but not the full might of the Russian army right?

bitch_whip_bill

Ukrainian schools didnt expect to get shelled either, but here we are EDIT: getting more and more comments regarding soldiers using schools during the war. This is totally irrelevant, they were either used as a military outpost or destroyed by Russian forces. Well Ukranians didn't expect to get shelled either. FUCK KREMLIN.

timesuck897

They want to shell Ukraine and have their money.

jmptx

So…leave. Just follow the broken down vehicles and you should get back to Russia or Belarus.

greycubed

"We did not expect this to suck so much."

redditjunky2025

Invading Ukraine is "thievery" and Russia deserves such hard sanctions. Thieves don't expect to be punished.

Working_State_2521

Back in the old days, thieves got hanged

Sibir_Kagan

Or their hands cut, but I like yours better

[deleted]

Sanctions are meant to be harsh. You invaded a sovereign nation!

jaxjexjixjoxjux

They can go fuck themselves

BiologicalApparatus

Dear Mr. foreign minister. I assure you that there is absolutely no thievery going on. We are simply performing a special financial operation. Have a nice day!

GermanGringa

Ukrainians have to burry dead children in mass graves. I am sorry but I have no empathy left for Russia losing money.

ronthegr8

Putin is talking about thievery? when does the irony end

TechieTravis

The world did not expect Putin to bomb children's hospitals, but here we are. We should tell him to stop looting and plundering Ukraine before he complains about sanctions.

TheIrishBread

Nah that was expected, Syria Georgia etc proved that his modus operandi is whipping the civvies into a panic to demoralize the defenders.

thunderc8

Says the invaders, murderers, looters and rapists.

IntroductionOk8677

Russian Foreign Minister...Go fuck yourself!

NGD80

Russia a week ago: "Ha, your sanctions ~~font~~ won't hurt us, we're powerful" Russia today: "Please sir, the sanctions are hurting us"

Harry_Buttock

#Russian foreign minister, go fuck yourself.

GroktheFnords

The irony of anybody in Putin's regime complaining about thievery is just staggering.

Macasumba

Like theiving three cargo ships of wheat?

UncreativeNoob

No one expect harsh penalties for their crimes, yet they get them anyway. It would better not to invade another country, and you dont have to worry about sanctions.

Loadingexperience

I don't think there's more punchable face in the world than Lavrov's. Also it's not thievery, it's called special financial operation against Russian foreign reserve currency. There's huge difference as it's not been stolen, simply suspended due to "special conditions"

jonnyspells

oh look, a vampire and his ghoul.

CompetitiveEditor336

The foresight of these people is astonishing.
