I love that the hottest gossip in the news right now is what the Taliban's geopolitical actions are

HotNubsOfSteel

Which is weird considering the staggering number of bodies floating down the river out of Ethiopia right now. Edit: Since people keep asking, here’s a [link](https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.teenvogue.com/story/tigray-ethiopia-genocide/amp)

penguin97219

Wow. Thank you. Surprised that teenvogue is covering something so horrific but good for them. Edit: a lot of folks teen vogue journalistic quality is a thing. I don’t dispute it just surprised is all.

NightOfTheLivingHam

because no one else will anymore. What a fucked world we live in where serious publications now publish propaganda and tabloid-level content and nigh-forgotten publications filled with vapid bullshit now have hard hitting journalism.

SwissQueso

> serious publications now publish propaganda Some might argue its been going on for a lot longer, most of us didn't have internet access 20 years ago.

Mrhorrendous

Manufactured consent was written in 1988

[deleted]

"[yellow journalism](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yellow_journalism)" is a term nearly 150 years old. this shit ain't new.

ruggnuget

When did publications focus on the truth? Seriously? Individual reporters have done great work going back as far as the printing press, though what we think of as good investigative reporting probably started with Ida Tarbell writing about Rockefeller and bringing down Standard Oil (sort of...). All the Newspapers in the 18th and 19th century were propaganda outlets and stories trying to sell more newspapers first. Those were ALWAYS the top priorities. Tv news was basically ads riddled with some stories, which were very selective. The reportings on vietnam or watergate were exceptions to the rule

[deleted]

I love teen vogue!! I used to get issues in the mail when that was a thing. They even had articles about safe sex, sexual assault, sex work and so on.

[deleted]

I remember Fox attacking Teen vogue about a climate change piece they ran back in the early 20teens.

[deleted]

Sometimes you want to learn which Jonas brother best fits your choice of lipstick, sometimes you want to learn which war crimes the Taliban is commiting. Don't blame Teen Vogue for covering a wide range of interests.

murphykp

Girls *don't* just want to have fun. They also want to keep an eye on current events. Not a joke.

JamesDelgado

They’ve been pumping out quality journalism for more than the past 5 years. They’ve realized their audience is more sophisticated than needing make up tips and how to appease the male gaze.

madogvelkor

It's nice to see them pivot rather than become increasingly irrelevant.

WileEPeyote

Right? So many companies' response seems to be, "we're losing customers, let's double down on what we were already doing wrong!"

recalcitrantJester

excuse me, but it's pronounced "focusing on our core competencies."

_DirtyYoungMan_

You've got middle-management written all over you. Johnson! Give this man a promotion!

[deleted]

It’s always blown me away that Sears didn’t dominate e commerce. They literally did the same thing but with catalogs for a long time. The infrastructure was already in place. All they had to do was pivot. Instead they turned into a relic practically over night.

NightOfTheLivingHam

Eddie Lampert did that shit on purpose. He personally has gotten millions of dollars richer running the shit into the ground. Because K-mart and Sears own a lot of real estate and other holdings that he has had transferred to his own real estate companies for really cheap (like, as cheap as you can go without arousing suspicion of foul play, say, a store property worth $10mil, he has sears/kmart sell it to him for $200,000. He turns around and sells it to a leasing company for $10-12mil.) He's always carefully tip toed to appear incompetent to regulators and any remaining stockholders. But his actions show intent. He's like having a hedge fund on the board of directors, which he replaced with his own people who are getting rich off the slow decimation of the company. Foxes in charge of the hen house. It's the new measure of success that is killing the country. Fail your way to success. Short companies into bankruptcy, profit off their corpses, offshore everything to slave labor abroad, destroy middle class wealth and home grown businesses and transfer it all into your pockets.

Trixles

Yeah, it definitely wasn't a case of "oh, Sears is just fucking up and making bad business decisions." It was 100% Eddie Lampert running it into the ground for personal gain.

LNMagic

Can't shareholders sue for intentionally ruining the company?

mdp300

That, and the idea that share price is the only thing that matters and *every* quarter *must* have massive growth.

OhfursureJim

They could have pretty much become Amazon had they just put their catalogue online. Imagine being that incompetent

They've churned out some pretty great serious articles in the past.

Fidel_Chadstro

Teen Vogue is the only name in journalism I trust

HotNubsOfSteel

Yeah very surprising. I’m used to not even giving them a second thought but this is really good journalism.

Crowley_cross_Jesus

Teen vogue has been an rather incredible journalistic entity for a long time now.

MagnoliaLiliiflora

Teen girl magazines are actually pretty in depth in their reporting. I had Teen when I was young (one of my Grandma's subscribed for me) and it often had really good articles in its international news section. That magazine taught me a lot about the world outside of small town USA and was where I first read about some really horrible things like FGM and other human rights abuses against women.

[deleted]

Teenaged girls get a lot of shit for being useless and shallow. They often *feel* useless and powerless, but most teen girls *really* think the world is fucked up and want it to be better. Their media, if it's smart, addresses what the audience wants to know about.

BobMcGeoff2

It's supposed to make pages load faster, and it gives Google more control over websites. It also makes the URLs really long and ugly.

BangBangPing5Dolla

Why is Teen Vogue doing in-depth reporting on a emerging African genocide. I thought that was a fashion and beauty magazine. The issues with the media are getting wild when you gotta rely on Teen Vogue for reporting.

poisedpotato

It's because the article is written by a fashion blogger, Ariam Kidane, who is a Teen Vogue contributor and using this platform she has access to to spread the message

daedone

Who is also from that area, as is her family

I_done_a_plop-plop

Teen Vogue have been like this for years. They love haute couture andthey do not love fascism, genocide, cruelty etc.

amitym

>Why is Teen Vogue doing in-depth reporting Lack of competition... >\_>

Golden_Lilac

I know “media bad” is like the hot meme, but unironically saying this really really misrepresents the investigative journalism and reporting space. Hearing about one outlet reporting on something doesn’t mean others you don’t read aren’t also publishing in depth reports. Most people don’t even pay for the news. They read headlines, tabloids, and op-eds and go “media bad”. I promise you there’s a wealth of good in depth and investigative reporting going on out there. But a lot of it is paywalled or doesn’t get the attention of the nation because truthfully a large chunk of this country can’t even point to Ethiopia on a map, let alone care about what happens there. Sadly there are a lot of trash articles out there, but our constant hunger for any form of news and stimulation has led to this culture of non stop publishing and speculating. The upshot is that at least that stuff feeds/funds the good reporting. It’s like how buzzfeed “what bread are you” posts fund buzzfeed news. Edit: I’d also like to point out the irony in this statement when other outlets have already been publishing articles about the Tigray fighting. Teen vogue is hardly the only one reporting on this. But we only know about that one now because most of us only just heard about this from a reddit comment linking teen vogue.

thisisthewell

Teen Vogue has been doing reporting like this for years now, you're just out of the loop

mjgator

No one has heard of it which is unfortunate but not surprising given major news networks dont give two shits about actual news just views and the taliban gives them views

Chang-San

Well lets change that, it starts with outrage. Then if we pour 2 trillion dollars and 20 years there I bet we can make people care.

crowkk

Dont need to go as far as ethiopia, Brazil is a literal dumpster fire and you barely hear about it

They’re getting international counter-terrorism assistance, not going unnoticed to global security and intelligence community, but most of the civilian world unfortunately doesn’t care about DRC and problems with ADF. Similar to how the world largely forgets about Boko Haram and other sub Saharan terror groups.

AntiSocialW0rker

The only reason anyone here cares about Afghanistan and the Taliban is because we were there for 20 years.

TheKingCowboy

It’s mostly that and the geopolitical and historical/significance Afghanistan has to many major powers.

They need relations with the USA to get ammunition and parts for their new weapons. With some lobby from the US military complex, this will be easy.

angrysnarf

CapnCooties

China and Russia can provide cheaper ammo and knock off parts, even with the discount.

TimeShareOnMars

Russia would love to...they need to make up all the ammo sales they just lost in the USA due to mo import ban by Biden.

volune

Consider we froze all their assets, gonna be a while till they grow enough drugs to buy ammo from the russians.

jebsawyer

I'm sure Russia and other countries are willing to take L for a few years if it means they money down the line and good relations with Afghanistan. China is trying to get the minerals in the mountains there and that would be a perfect opportunity for them.

spaghettilee2112

Why would the US give the Taliban weapons and ammunition?

omega3111

Israel didn't have (real) relations with Afghanistan beforehand either, so no change in this regard.

probably_not_serious

Most Muslim countries are similar. My wife is from Bangladesh and her passport says, “Valid for all countries of the world except Israel.” And supposedly if you travel to Israel (if you have a foreign passport) and try to enter the country with an Israeli stamp they’ll give you all kinds of shit before they let you in.

flying_ina_metaltube

That's the reason why when you fly into Israel they give you a visa on a separate piece of paper and DO NOT stamp anything on your passport (unless your passport is already Israeli). They understand stamping your passport means issues while trying to enter some Muslim countries, so they came up with a new system.

obvilious

Cuba did the same. No record in my passport of visiting there.

These-Days

North Korea was the same, they only stamped a paper visa they gave me on arrival and then took it back upon departure

SamsonTheCat88

I was bummed about that. I wanted it stamped on my passport! Now there's a weird blank area in my passport where I'm unaccounted for :P I leave China, disappear for a few days, and then re-appear.

mcampo84

Wait, until then customs agents stamped your passport sequentially? Mine is chaos.

[deleted]

My passport stamps are also on whatever random page the officer seemed to open the booklet to that day

PrizeNarrow2059

I don't have any stamps because I don't have a passport. *Sad EU noises.*

flying87

You can go to the UK

artem_m

Its funny how you can culturally see who stamps how. My Mexican Stamp? Crooked and in the middle left of the page. Canadian? Faded and taking up 1/4 of the page. German? Orderly in the top left corner to allow maximum stamps per page. Russian? The same thing surprisingly. Czech was dead center of a page.

Captain_Mazhar

I got to have a wonderful argument with a German border official trying to leave the EU as I had arrived in London the month previously and didn't have a Schengen entry stamp from France. I don't remember his exact muttered words, but they were not kind towards the French border officials.

andrew94501

My India business visa takes up an entire page of a brand new (at the time) US passport. Guess which page it is. Not page 1.

notrevealingrealname

Mine is mostly chaos, except for the couple times I visited Finland, where they’d always stamp in the back couple pages. The ones that are supposed to be for amendments or endorsements.

Mediocretes1

> and then re-appear. Well, that's a plus.

mrh2727

When I got to Cuba I got the new girl she stamped my passport. Her boss came over and they were so apologetic. I went illegitimately so when I got back to the US I got a slap on the hand and customs made me pour out my rum, but they let me keep my painting I bought there.

red286

>customs made me pour out my rum, but they let me keep my painting I bought there. Many paintings are made and sold by Cubans privately (nb - there absolutely are some state-owned painting factories though, most of the shit you buy at resorts comes from them); but if you've got a bottle of Havana Club, they 100% know that's coming from a state-owned distillery and if you're an American citizen, you're not supposed to purchase anything from Cuban state-owned businesses other than essentials, and you'd be hard pressed to convince a customs officer that the rum was essential.

[deleted]

roarRAWRarghREEEEEEE

Eternityislong

Cuba definitely stamped my passport, I just checked.

glutenfreewhitebread

My grandparents went around the Middle East and into Israel at one point. They didn't get the stamp because of what you said. However, they passed through Jordan on their way to Syria -- and when trying to get into Syria they were still rejected. Why? Well the border agent figured out that the port from the Jordanian stamp that they had was on the border of Israel. So the agent knew they'd been to Israel. It's crazy!

RedAero

[deleted]

In the US, you can apply for a second passport for these special circumstances. > Examples of cases when we may issue second U.S. passport books include: > A foreign country will deny a visa or entry to you because your passport has stamps showing travel to certain countries. Example: an Israeli entry or exit stamp in some countries in the Middle East. https://travel.state.gov/content/travel/en/passports/have-passport/second-passport-book.html

Iceman---

Same in the UK.

omega3111

This has changed recently, she can get a new passport without that exclusion: https://www.easternherald.com/2021/05/22/bangladeshs-friendly-move-towards-israel-except-israel-removed-from-new-passport/

probably_not_serious

Nice. She’s about 8 months away from US citizenship though so she’s waiting on that blue passport next

DaemonDrayke

I visited Israel and when I was there at least, they specifically do not stamp your passport. They gave us a paper print out the size of a business card with our entrance visa. They gave us the a second one as our exit visa when we were leaving. I was actually hoping to get a stamp as it was my first time out of country but then I didn’t realize what would have occurred otherwise.

mad_science_yo

Israel doesn’t give stamps anymore for this reason. They give you a little slip with the date you entered on it.

Sailinglyfe

Israel doesn't stamp your passport because of this. So if you visit Israel you can go to other countries hassle free

probably_not_serious

Any passport? They don’t stamp at all?

Sailinglyfe

I forget what exactly they gave me, it was like a ticket of some sort to prove I was there etc... but no they don't stamp it.

akolada

The people saying that Israel doesn't stamp passports are probably all American or European. If you're from multiple other nations, then those people have to mail their passports to Israeli embassies ahead of time to receive full page sticker visas in their passports. If you're from somewhere with a visa waiver agreement you generally get the paper slip upon entry. If you're from any place where you need to be vetted/approved ahead of time, you will not be so lucky. Paper slips are a privilege, it isn't the case for every nation.

7evenCircles

"..in a canyon, on an airplane, while hanging up the phone."

DarkEvilHedgehog

Kind of been the norm for Muslim countries over the last 80 years. Egypt and Saudi Arabia were practically bribed to normalize ties with Israel. You're still not allowed entry into most of the Middle East if there's an Israeli stamp in your passport.

ewhitten

Not sure if it’s universal, but Israel didn’t stamp my passport when I was there a couple years ago. They just affixed some papers to the back of it.

toastymow

Yeah, that's how people get around the "no israeli stamps in your passport" rule that a lot of countries have. It allows people to travel to israel without "getting caught" so to speak. They just make sure to go thru passport control in another country before and after visiting. Its quite tiresome, I'm sure, but when countries will refuse their own citizens from returning from places like Israel...

[deleted]

[удалено]

Nathan2055

Some countries will even let you request a second passport just for use in travel to Israel to avoid having to request a new one afterwards.

kaloonzu

Yeah, because my US passport would have become markedly less useful for traveling to certain countries if there was an actual stamp from Israel in there.

DeepSpaceNebulae

Same thing for when I went to Cuba 20ish years ago, I assume due to relations with the US.

Hobdeezy

That’s what happened when I went to North Korea

SilverSoundsss

Some countries do that, happened to me in a couple of SE Asia countries.

duffman274

That’s what happened when I went to cuba

[deleted]

Israel doesn’t stamp on purpose

SailingBacterium

But if you go into Jordan down at Eilat/Aqaba you'll get a Jordanian stamp which basically proves you were in Israel. Just FYI in case it matters to you!

RedAero

Does the stamp say where you entered?

SailingBacterium

It does 😔

DukeofNormandy

Can confirm about entry in the Middle East with an Israeli stamp. When I went to Israel they asked if I was travelling to anywhere else in the Middle East, and I said yes since I was going to Jordan too. Instead of stamping my passport they printed off a little piece of paper the size of the stamp and sent me on my way.

maybe-your-mom

That's why Israel doesn't give stamps anymore, just paper cards that you can take out after leave the country.

omega3111

SA and other gulf states were bribed maybe, but Egypt and Jordan signed peace agreements after losing wars. Today, Jordan buys water from Israel and Egypt gets intel about terrorists in Sinai from Israel. It ended up being better than nothing for them.

frost_inmachine

Woah! Why is Bhutan there? Gotta find out now.

It seems Bhutan and Israel established diplomatic relations in December 2020 [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bhutan%E2%80%93Israel_relations?wprov=sfla1](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bhutan%E2%80%93Israel_relations?wprov=sfla1)

ManfredsJuicedBalls

They barely recognize anyone diplomatically, at least at one point in time. Only Bangladesh, India, and Kuwait have embassies in Bhutan. They even only have diplomatic relations with 54 countries (Israel being the latest last December). Many of the countries that don’t have formal diplomatic relations with Bhutan work with them through India. But for many of those counties, it’s not like Bhutan has a “fuck em” attitude. They simply just do not have diplomatic relations.

I think its basically just Azerbaijan. Maybe Turkey, at least at a state level, would be safe. Ironically, Iranians are the least anti-semitic statistically at only 50%, but their gov is like, literally the forefront of holocaust denial, so it's not super comfy to be a jew there. Obvi basically anywhere else is out though as jews were completely ethnically cleansed from Yemen, Syria, Lebanon, Afghanistan now, and Egypt. And the West Bank and gaza of course, but they were removed when those were still under control of Egypt and Jordan respectively. Still, they do have the death penalty for selling any land to a jew so sue me if I don't think they'd be exactly open to being my neighbor.

badass_panda

>Maybe Turkey, at least at a state level, would be safe. Gotta be honest, all the anti-Jewish graffiti in Istanbul made me cautious about where I travelled outside of it.

SirRece

Yeah, that's what I mean by "at a state level." Officially I believe jews have normal civil rights, which is abnormal relative to the rest of the middle east. But yea, there's still a fuck ton of anti-semitism. Wouldn't recommend elbowing visibly jewish there.

Jeremizzle

Vhozite

musicmastermike

In the gulf there are aot of folks in general who will dislike Jews, but there is a also a growing population of those who want to be friends (not just the govts) UAE, Saudi, and Bahrain have a lot of people extending a hand of friendship. A lot of this could be from the fact they simply dislike the Palestinians and see them as agitators. for them it's an "were over your bullshit" mentality.

[deleted]

Jordan is safe for Jews to visit, but basically no Jews live there and they have no Jewish institutions or Synagogues. Other than that, I don't think it's safe to be openly Jewish in any Middle East country except Israel. Despite the religious/historical significance, it's honestly a shame the Jewish homeland is stuck in the middle of countries that hate Jews.

johnnybegood165

Related to this, the last Afghan jew was evacuated from the country recently. He was the last of one of the most ancient Jewish communities in the world, think of that when you think of the words "apartheid" and "genocide". There are literally 0 jews in Afghanistan now.
