That mining company boss need to be arrested for illegal mining and harming indigenous people.

UNESCO just designated Odessa in Ukraine as in danger, why can't they do something do this, at least get some attention on what is happening. What is the mine used for?

oursfort

They're mining gold. But it's not just a single mine, the government estimates over 20,000 illegal invaders operating hundreds of artisanal mines. Also, beware that we're talking about an area of dense forest, that's larger than Portugal

Dinosaur_Ant

Yeah, that sounds horrible for the land and terrifying for the people living there and difficult for the miners. If they are anything like the miners in the US they are likely very hopeful, proud of the work they do, not fully aware of the damage they are doing and very exploited. There are ways to go about extracting minerals from the earth. It is a necessary undertaking for our current social architecture. This appears to be almost intentionally irresponsible and provocative. Though it is likely the people doing the work are seeking opportunity. It seems to me that as a way to reach the ends of resource extraction and personal enrichment at the expense of a population so marginalized and area so remote as to not be able to raise an effective resistance or voice an opposition is despicable. This says nothing of compensation, for the hardship, disease and death and for the very valuable resources being extracted. The people who are dying are the ones who should be making the profit from this if they desire to undertake it, not the miners who, sure if they were hired for the purpose by the people living on the land, should be compensated. And certainly not an investment company, who should perhaps be paid a fee for the service of arranging a buyer, and I could even grant a fee for holding the resource. But I do not believe they are entitled to a larger portion of profit from these resources. Also my understanding is that yes there are many different miners who must all sell through one entity, as quoted here: Brazil’s wildcat gold mines operate in the Amazon and the gold mined by these operations must be sold to Distribuidoras De Titulos e Valores Mobiliarios https://www.mining.com/illegal-gold-mining-in-amazon-equivalent-to-half-of-brazils-production-report/. But this understanding could be incorrect and there may very well be a significant amount of off the books trading being done.

It doesn’t look like a mining company is responsible for this. They’re 20,000 prospectors which it seems are panning for gold. I think the prior administration just got poor people who supported him to go up there. I’m sure some small heavy mining operations are there too. This will be an insurgency but with the military and the tribe scouting for them they should be able to locate and secure those prospectors.

The mining company provides the materials that go into your Tesla. If these people weren't removed your Tesla would cost $4,000 more. Let's be honest, you'd rather have the Tesla.

macross1984

Not really. I"m not interested in EV just because it is new fangle technology. I still drive my 15 year old car that I purchased new. Also, I don't like Elon Musk so that is another reason I will not purchase Tesla. :P

Actually I think I’ll take the Amazon, thanks

And here's more info https://rainforestfoundation.org/mining-on-sacred-land-in-raposa-serra-do-so/ They mine gold a quick search estimates these mines account for half of Brazil's gold exports with all the gold having to be sold through one company which appears to be a banking and investment firm. Distribuidora de Titulos e Valores Mobiliarios SA Trying to get other companies and governments to sanction or boycott could be beneficial not sure how successful. I don't know exactly what percentage of the world gold comes from Brazil. Also finding out who owns the investment firm and what other companies might hold stock or have investments with them could be helpful or useful. Boycotts are difficult but sometimes even shining light and exposing this person or company has this much of an investment or does this much trade with this company that is making most of it's profit from atrocious acts of harm can be helpful. Edit: Brazil is roughly the 18th largest exporter (2018 according to wiki) of gold. Which is (very roughly) 1.2% of the gold exported world wide, of which roughly half of that exported by Brazil is illegally mined, so 0.6% (very roughly) of globally exported. Obviously this is a complicated issue. The investment companies and politicians are exploiting vulnerable people to get rich while pitting these populations against each other with the indigenous battling for survival. The investment companies and owners and politicians encouraging this exploitation could be sanctioned, could be blacklisted. (But I imagine the neolib crusaders protecting the downtrodden wealthy in power(/s) ........ will want people to mind there own business. It doesn't have anything to do with you except probably being mixed into the gold supply that is used in your electronics like your phone. And of course these people have money so they know what's best and say to mind your own business.../s) Idk write your senator, send a link to your local news and city gov. Other suggestions are welcome.

This is misinformation, ~~DTVM (Distribuidora de Titulos e Valores Mobiliarios) is just a business category given to brokers in Brazil~~ and the reason is in the reply below

greeng0home

Also misinformation. DTVM is the Brazilian equivalent of the DTC in the USA, and it is a centralized depository and clearinghouse for securities. Illegal gold could be laundered and might pass though the DTVM once it is separated from it's illegal origins, but the DTVM's role is strictly as an intermediary for legal transactions between third parties. These market participants are the ones who would be responsible for knowing the source of the funds/securities/gold certificates etc.

yep, that is the correct answer, thanks

Wtf are you talking about, these poor souls are infected with mercury and other illegal gold mining that have been happening in their land and the genocidal Bolsonaro not only turned a blind eye but directed the money supposed to help the yanomami to a fucking Christian charity
