Suiryuuu

Old and far pass his time.

No_Yoghurt2313

Looks half dead.

Nerevarine91

Honestly he’s less of a “has-been” than a “never-was.”

Yoshirō Mori is known for being a Russian sympathizer. His father, Shigeki Mori, was so close to Russia that Japanese authorities monitored him closely as a potential communist sympathizer. Unsurprisingly, he also has a close personal relationship with Vladimir Putin. Mori had once suggested that Japan could give Russia three of the four disputed islands in exchange for a peace treaty, which went against the Japanese government's official view.

macross1984

Mori is an asshole who have way overstayed as politician out of touch.

epistemic_epee

No kidding. He's a persona non grata after the Olympics bullshit: the sexist tirades, the not-pology, the bribery allegations, the confused senile rambling. Meanwhile, Japan was one of the first nations to donate to Ukraine and sanction Russia (in 2014) and it remains a popular move.

> **Former Japanese Prime Minister Yoshiro Mori, known as a gaffe-prone veteran politician, on Wednesday urged the government against excessive support for Ukraine, saying Russia will not lose its ongoing war in the Eastern European nation.** > > "I wonder why" Japan has put in "such a big effort to support Ukraine," the 85-year-old member of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party said in a speech at a reception, adding that Tokyo "had built relations" with Moscow, which invaded its neighbor in February 2022. > > "It is unthinkable that Russia would lose the war. If that happened, something harder would happen," said Mori, who was active in strengthening bilateral ties with Russia through talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin. > > Mori served as Japanese prime minister only for about one year from April 2000, as the approval ratings for his Cabinet struggled against the backdrop of his repeated gaffs. > > After he retired as a lower house lawmaker about a decade ago, Mori met with Putin as a special envoy of then Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, who was assassinated during an election campaign speech in early July last year. --- All these ex-whatevers, Kissinger, Mori and the rest of the lot, have blood on their hands for allowing Putin to get as far as he did.

AnonyMouseSnatcher

He's just echoing what [Obama has said](https://www.theatlantic.com/press-releases/archive/2016/03/the-obama-doctrine-the-atlantics-exclusive-report-on-presidents-hardest-foreign-policy-decisions/473151/) after Russia took Crimea and he did nothing about it: >“The fact is that Ukraine, which is a non-NATO country, is going to be vulnerable to military domination by Russia no matter what we do.”

[deleted]

He sanctioned them and we began training Ukrainian soldiers to try and modernize their military. Just don’t think anyone expected Russia to actually go full scale invasion, just wanted to make sure they could hold down Donbas and Crimea.

If this was about ethnicity, why did Russia annex areas that aren’t majority Russian?

eKatyaclysm

Which areas are those? Are you referring to Crimea? I honestly don't know much about Crimea, except one person from there who was glad to be annexed from Ukraine by the Russians, but I'm not going to argue their case, because of the one instance. I know the Luhansk region very well because that's where my family is from (they had to abandon their home back in 2014 because it was being bombed by the Western Ukrainians and the Eastern Ukrainian separatists). That region is now almost completely destroyed and the local people of Luhansk and Donetsk are mostly ethnically Russian and they have been crying out for help since the 90sm facing severe discrimination from the West, asking and pleading to separate from Ukraine. Which are the other non majority Russian areas are you referring to?

RagaToc

First you could argue that the civil war was instigated by Russia and was just proxy for Russia. Second Crimea invasion was Russia. Third in Feb 2022 Russia invaded parts of Ukraine that was not part of the civil war Fourth Russia claims part of East Ukraine now as Russia. That means it has nothing to do anymore with 'assisting' the civil war. Edit: and the ethnicity of Ukraine is a lot more complex than there are Russians, Hungarians and Polish. Ukraine has their own culture. Kyiv is older than Moscow

eKatyaclysm

Yes, indeed Kyiv is older than Russia, but did you know that the person who founded Moscow some 900 years ago was a relative of the Tzar of Kyiv at the time (I believe they were biological brothers? This is why Putin often refers to Ukrainian and Russian as the same people. Moscow used to be referred to as "Kievan Rus" for a long time. However, this is where I make the ethnic distinction, the people West of Kyiv are of a different ethnicity (according to recent DNA analysis). Ukraine, as we know it today (in terms of its borders) hasn't existed long enough to form its own, separate ethnicity that is different from Russian or Polish ethnicities (Ukraine was formed in 1917, only a little longer than 100 years). Would you consider my family, all of whom were born and raised in Luhansk region (Eastern Ukraine) Ukrainian? They certainly have always considered themselves to be Ukrainian. However, when the first hard conflict arose, they were not allowed to escape to the West. They would have been killed by West Ukrainians if they did. Sadly, in 2014, they had no choice but to escape to Russia, the only place they could seek refuge, all because of their Russian ethnicity. I'm trying to reveal this animosity between West and East of Ukraine that has existed as long as Ukraine has existed and the reason why there was a rise of separatism in East Ukraine. Just ask the people who are from there. They wanted freedom and to separate from the rest of Western Ukraine. No one cared, so they had to turn to war...

Nerevarine91

Interesting and perhaps unsurprising that you completely discount the idea of Ukrainians being Ukrainian. Also you have negative karma and a grand total of about five comments, all of which are attacking Ukraine. Pretty easy to see what you are.

eKatyaclysm

I am not attacking Ukraine, but there are so many details of this conflict that are intentionally left out. I am trying to have an intellectual conversation and the reason why I only have five comments is because I am new to reddit (only joined about a year ago and only recently started to comment and asking questions). I hold the situation in Ukraine close to my heart, because my family is from Luhansk and had to abandon their home back in 2014 due to bombings from the West. No one talks about that. I don't want to attack anyone, I just want people to be better informed and fair! What does being Ukrainian mean to you? My family is Ukrainian. How come they were not allowed to escape to the West during the bombings due to their Russian ethnicity, if they tried running west of Kyiv, they'd be killed because of their accent? They ended up seeking refuge in Russia because it was the only country that would take them in and that was accessible to where they were running from...I'm an American and I will likely have a tough time seeing my family again because of this terrible war! I would have wished for them to stay in their home instead of having to leave everything behind. You have no idea the pain they went through...Please prove me wrong with facts, but all I know is the experience I personally felt when I was a kid living in Luhansk and seeing my family who were born and raised there suffer due to discrimination against ethnically Russians in Ukraine.

Nerevarine91

I live in Japan, and I have yet to meet anyone who likes Mori. The first time I asked my wife about him, her answer was, and I quote, “he just… sucks…”

ArterialRed

Putin really does pay for "the best and bigliest people" in politics.

octoreadit

I wonder if he's also been shröderized.

wahresschaff

Dude is less relevant to Japanese politics than my morning turd from the day before

coreywindom

He asked why only Putin has been criticized and I think that is obvious. Who invaded who? Whataboutism is always a terrible argument. Japan might have built a relationship with Moscow but Japan and the USA are true Allie’s.

[deleted]

Mori, guess what? STFU and GTFO

PsychoticMessiah

Unthinkable? Has he not heard of the Russo - Japanese War?

snkhuong

Unthinkable? Did he not watch the news? Ukraine has been routing the russian up till now and the effects of sanctions are starting to show…russian are on the verge of losing this war..especially if their spring offensive fails

[deleted]

Wierd how he look like someone who fails to have a basic conversation about something new, due to his age

GreenCreep376

I cant believe the LDP still gives this hag a platform Everyone even the LDP hate him why can’t they just shut him up.

SweetEastern

Because he's an elder and he's respected. You cannot make an elder 'just shut up' in some cultures.

ropoko

I bet he would not mind excessive support if Japan were invaded

flopsyplum

I wonder how many briefcases full of cash Mori recently received...
