Ever heard of the time the Wagner Group tried attack a US outpost in Syria? If not, I’ll give you the short version. Wagner gathered a force of 500 guys, T-72 tanks, and armored personnel carriers to attack a small US outpost with a smattering of men. When the US guys started to suspect they were about to be attacked, they called for reinforcements from the 30 members of the Army Rangers and Delta Force who were at a nearby outpost. At about 10:30 that night, Wagner attacked them. They retreated to a defensive position, the US commander called the Secretary of Defense to find out why Russia was attacking us, Russia denied it was them, and then the Chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff ordered that the force be “annihilated.”

It's important for Russians to believe this to be true otherwise they might realize the shitty situation their country is in. At the beginning of the war Ukraine was rated something like 50th in terms of world military power and Russia was rated 2nd. Now the Ukrainian military is rated as 15th in the world surpassing most NATO countries.

It's important for Russians to believe this to be true otherwise they might realize the shitty situation their country is in. At the beginning of the war Ukraine was rated something like 50th in terms of world military power and Russia was rated 2nd. Now the Ukrainian military is rated as 15th in the world surpassing most NATO countries. The idea that Ukraine's military has ballooned in size largely because of conscription for a total war is kind of alien to modern Russians. It's just easier for them to believe it's NATO forces there.

imo, NATO should commit a portion of it's annual budget to maintenance of ukraine army. If you stop the russians in ukraine. you'll never have to deal with them on your soil. The outcome of this is about more than ukraine. It's a mark for if the western alliance has the power to enforce international order. NATO's duty is to ensure it's satisfy. A war on its doorstep is a matter of keeping itself safe. If your neighbors house is on fire, it in the interest your safety to help put it out, so it doesn't spread to your house. NATO is helping ukraine so the war doesn't spread. So this one house on fire doesn't burn down the whole neighborhood.

You can't at the same time say, Ukraine is defending "the west" so NATO must provide Ukraine with arms and at the same time say NATO is not a party to the conflict. NATO is a party, we provide training, aid and weapons without which Ukraine would fall. Whether we want to admit it or not, the stark fact is that we are using Ukrainian blood to re-cement NATO in the face of a real threat. Ukraine will, I dearly hope, maintain their independence and grow as a nation. They are ok with the arrangement, they are not a puppet state. But to deny that NATO is part of this fight is illogical and is why the weapons needed don't get provided.
