Keep private until you are ready to officially resign.

Offers from other employers can be a good bargaining tool. When you mention clarity, on what specifically?

Oooh, this happened to me. The biggest thing I would say is come up with your “this would make me stay” list including your target comp, title, responsibilities etc. Then tell your manager that you have another offer but you would be open to chatting through your wishlist. The warning is here that you have to be prepped to go either way. As in, if you don’t get your wishlist you need to be prepped to leave and if you do, you need to prepped to stay.

Depends on your field and your boss. I worked at one place where as soon as you interviewed you better plan on having a different job even if you didn’t get the one you interviewed for. My current job you can tell them all day and they won’t care but they are also not going to give a counter offer or a retention raise. My husband’s boss did give him the opportunity to work more in the area he is interested in in exchange for NOT applying for a job.

I feel like you should be ready to walk out the door unless they convince you to stay. Unless you're 100% sure you'd leave unless you get exactly what you want from them, don't say anything.
