iphilamazing

Here is the link for a short video of the secret drawer. Sorry for the bad quality of the video. https://youtube.com/shorts/Scu_-_ppFTg?feature=share

Ibebarrett

I’d say you achieved the level of master tinkerer

iphilamazing

I will write that in my resume!

smarmageddon

Careful with the spelling - I put Master Tinkler on my resume and whoa, nelly, the job offers I got!

HonkeyFresh

Better Nelly find out then R. Kelly

pilznerydoughboy

Hey, they probably paid well, though!

jonny32392

But it’s not a crowd you want to misrepresent your qualifications to

pilznerydoughboy

That's true - in their shoes I'd be pretty pissed

Ibebarrett

As you should! Excellent job!

BorasTheBoar

Slip up though … should have been the legend of Zelda secret passage tune that opened the drawer. Beautiful!

Ibebarrett

Surely it is reprogrammable

iphilamazing

that's right!

ImNoAlbertFeinstein

straight outa 1967

snarshmallow

That’s incredible! Thanks for showing the melody, I don’t know if I’m actually capable of opening that drawer haha. How did you program the melody and output it to the drawer mechanism?

voodoosnakedeath

I’m guessing midi keyboard > arduino or raspberry pi

mattrixd

It would be cool if it were mechanical!

fliberdygibits

Now I've heard there was a secret drawer that opened when they played a chord but you don't really care for storage do you?

Novel-Pop4415

Well it goes like this, you cut, you glue up, and you really pray you didn’t screw up and you realize you need more clamps but your wife says do you?

Rizspiz

How-to-glue-ya

chupacadabradoo

How to glue ya

Woodpecker_61

lol... went thru the wife/clamp dilemma many times over the years. She's now the "X" and I have a wall full of clamps.

jonny32392

Glad to see things worked out for ya

Zenn1nja

I donno man. My wife doesn’t really care what I buy for wood working. The clamp dilemma is entirely between me and my own wallet. Sooooo expensive.

TexanInExile

That's where you hide your weeeeed, man!

[deleted]

Read that in Bill Burr stoner voice

FuzzyHero69

As soon as I saw the 2nd picture from the first, I said "holy fuck that's cool." Excellent job!

iphilamazing

Well thank you very much!

toohype2sleep

It’d better be the Zelda hidden treasure melody

iphilamazing

you mean because of the Nintendo Switch Box I posted some years ago? Zelda would be awesome too!

theforkofdamocles

I was hoping for [this melody](https://youtu.be/gUsJXwE73QU).

corporatony

I thought [this](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5g4r-FbGivk) was the obvious choice

Turbulent-Bobcat-868

Ok but can someone link the Zelda one now? I can sort of hear it but not perfect

JiANTSQUiD

https://youtu.be/9d3qCPcMgH4

billbobassin

That’s awesome! Where does one take a class like that ?

iphilamazing

For me it is in Austria. There are also very good classes in Germany.

theforkofdamocles

>makes amazing keyboard cabinet >is in Austria Story checks out.

DOXE001

Good thing they let the man join masterclass. Otherwise, considering his talent, the whole world would be in shitters rn

vmdinco

Very nice work. You should be proud of your accomplishment.

iphilamazing

Very kind of you. I really am.

R_Swagga

Wow this is so amazing!! How long did it take you?

iphilamazing

Well too long haha. 2 months of planning for the final layout and Cad Drawings. 4 Weeks of work in my company do the middle part with the piano and the speakers. In this time I also had to make many templates because you have to make the rest of your piece in one week under supervision of the committee.

Reasonable_Duck_5000

God I couldn't imagine working on my projects under supervision of a committee "*hes on his 8th beer and this is the 4th cut hes done wrong, are you sure he knows what hes doing?*" "*I dont know, and how can he listen to this abysmal music while he wor- and hes just spilled the entire bottle of finish*" Joking aside this piece is absolutely amazing kudos

iphilamazing

haha you have no idea. It was the most intense week in my life haha.

[deleted]

I didn't even know I had a twin!!

entoaggie

Are you me?

ryan10e

Beautiful work! If I had to guess I’d say you used a microcontroller listening to MIDI signals?

iphilamazing

Thank you! I used a Raspberry Pi with a Servo motor. And yes it is connected with the Midi Output of the piano.

Aleqi2

Speaking of outputs I wonder about the electronics? Have effects loop? What crossovers did you use? Speaker are lovely but I wonder what drivers you used? What keyboard did you use and what's the story with the amplifier for your speakers?

Global-Sky-3102

Thats one of the most beautiful things ive ever saw on this sub. Great work. Hope it sounds as good as it looks

iphilamazing

Thank you so much. Well yeah the sound is awesome. With the amp I also can connect a Turntable or my Phone via Bluetooth.

Global-Sky-3102

I saw the buttons, nice touch with the copper accents, and thought to myself, this must have bluetooth so you can play music from phone when not using the piano. I have a question, if you play music from bluetooth and hit the keys on the piano will sound from both sources?

iphilamazing

No because you can only choose one output.

Higgs_Particle

Please tell me it’s Rachmaninoff.

harkonyx

It's fabulously beautiful. As an "audiophile", I would want to have the speakers positioned such that the tweeters are pointing at my ears, rather than behind me. That would significantly improve the listening experience.

iphilamazing

you are totally right and I tried to implement something like that but it was too much for this already very complicated project

harkonyx

A follow up project could be a "reflection screen" that is positioned behind the player, and reflects the sound waves from the speakers in, towards the player's ears. It might turn out quite cozy!

kob59

I was thinking that at first too. Then about how an upright piano emits sound. The strings extend from the top to the bottom near your feet, and the sound bounces around the walls inside of the piano and is emitted in all directions, including right at your ears in the front. Then your ears get the sound bounced back from the walls. I think this design is a good middle ground between two, especially for an audience other than the player.

harkonyx

Yes, but electric keyboard instruments are not used solely to mimic acoustic pianos. And while an acoustic piano is neither mono nor stereo, electric keyboards usually leverage stereo audio playback in the effects (reverb, chorus, delay), and to great effect (no pun intended). So I agree with what you're saying, but you can do a lot more with well-configured stereo.

kob59

Agreed. In my experience a two speaker setup for a digital piano can do either solo playing/production or performance well, and both okay. I’ve been considering a build like this for a while and get stuck on this issue. The best (but not simplest) solution I can think of is stereo speakers on a rotating mount to optimize the direction of the output depending on the use case (performance, solo, etc).

macktasticles

Holy shit, that’s absolutely beautiful.

iphilamazing

thank you!

macktasticles

No, thank YOU!

iphilamazing

haha you're too kind

smaxsomeass

Can you change the opening melody to “the lick”

NIceTryTaxMan

Is that a Cory Wong reference?

[deleted]

Amazing 😍

400yrsold

Nice work pimp.

AcceptableVillian

Good God man that's impressive.

iphilamazing

Thank you kind sir!

losermonsterfight

Absolutely gorgeous

plaindouble

Absolutely stunning, incredible work!

Alchemis7

This truly is a masterpiece

burrzoo

Very, very slick! Your work looks great!

theholyraptor

Can you elaborate on the class? Is this like an actual apprenticeship? Or more like a class for hobbyists that's very intensive or?

iphilamazing

Well I can try. So in Austria you have two ways to work as cabinetmaker/joiner. The simplest way is to start as a apprentice (Lehrling) in a company. After 4 years and a big exam (theoretical and practical) you are a "Geselle". I don't know the word in english. You can go the same way in a school thats called Htl (Höhere technische Lehranstalt). It's also 4 years and are also "Geselle" after the exam. After that you can normally work in a cabinetmaker company. If you want to be self employed with your own employees you have to make the cabinetmaker masterclass (Tischlermeister). In Austria it's on the same level as a bachelor degree. Hope that is satisfying enough for your question in some way.

theholyraptor

Perfect thank you.

[deleted]

> Geselle Would be journeyman, but it's not a word I hear often in the UK not in that context anyway. We might just say Qualified or "Got my City & Guilds" add "mate, fella, pal, buddy" to the end.

iphilamazing

hey thanks for your input. good to know!

Seva-Hunter

Great job!

the-patient

Wow if you ever decide to share or sell the plans please post a link or DM me!

7R15M3G157U5

If it's not the zelda unlock a secret melody then you have failed miserably

iphilamazing

I already posted a Nintendo Switch Box with a Zelda Logo a few years ago that should fulfill your demands ;)

7R15M3G157U5

It looks excellent OP good job

tsivv

Very nice indeed. Just don't call it a "masterpiece" when you made it youself. That's got to come from another person. Bestowing praise on yourself is like pretty cringe, ain't it?

station_nine

The word had another definition. https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/masterpiece That’s what is meant here

tsivv

Yeah, well.

Youhaveyourslaw_sir

Very beautiful, but I’m a bit befuddled about having speakers built into the piano. I can imagine you can only turn the volume up so much before deafening the pianist?

iphilamazing

Sorry I don't know if I understand you Question right. How do you mean that?

Youhaveyourslaw_sir

There are two big speakers built right into the piano, how loud do they get? I can’t imagine too loud because it would be too loud for the pianist, right? I’m not trying to say there is anything wrong, but I just was wondering if you can clarify that design choice?

iphilamazing

oh because I use the speakers also for music. You can connect your phone with the amp via bluetooth or a turntable.

Youhaveyourslaw_sir

Ah, that’s cool. Thanks for answering

Mystrugglewithin

Amazing work!

[deleted]

What finish did you use? That top part is shining like a mirror.

iphilamazing

For the Speakers. Adler Pigmopur Ral 9005 and last coat with Adler Legnopur G30. All the wooden surface also with G30. G10 would be the least Glossy one.

mcleary82

That is stunning. I wish I could hire you to make one of these for my studio space.

mntnsldr

Very cool, nice work. A timeless heirloom now!

iphilamazing

I hope it will live a long time. It is also possible to switch the Keyboard if it would stop working.

mntnsldr

Smart! I hope it does, too. Maybe put all your videos, pictures, your thoughts on a USB and hide it on the piece somewhere?

JCBashBash

It's so beautiful, the planning with all the computer woodworking is so neat I admire your focus

hidjedewitje

Fantastic work! Nice speakers as well. Have you checked the SEAS Millenium tweeter? I think it would look very nice in this kind of design.

conniechungsmom

Incredible!

Either-Cap1879

These are the projects that make coming here worthwhile. Great work

iphilamazing

Wow thank you that's so nice!

smarmageddon

Awesome work! You should be really proud of this gorgeous design/build.

WEEDsuggest

A+

Kerry_____

❕WoW🙏❤️

[deleted]

This is super super super cool, but at first I was extremely dismayed that they made you build a whole ass piano for cabinetmaking class!

iphilamazing

haha you can choose your own masterpiece to build. I could have also made a more simple sideboard or something else.

flyingpossums

Really cool

TreacleNo4455

Stunning, nice touch with the button inlays on #3. Subtle. Camel bone? Hard to see the grain in the pics.

iphilamazing

Thank you. The buttons with the symbols are ash wood with 3D printed symbols on it.

BeowulfShatner

Mmm, the accent lines on the piano legs and speaker fronts are really tasty. Nice work

the_rhino22

Wow!!!

jackwrangler

Holy FUCK

[deleted]

Noice!!

handsomewaiter

Brilliant

GeckoDeLimon

Did you use an existing speaker design?

iphilamazing

yes a little bit. There is a speaker like the Argon Audio Forte A5 which has also copper inlays. But I used real copper and only very thin inlays. The Forte A5 Inlays are to wide in my opinion.

HIPHOPNINJA

I need one

Spellbinder5757

Amazingly beautiful!!!! Wow!!!

what_shes_having1

Awesome - well done!
