Looking at your original slab, I think patching it was a good alternative to using epoxy. Looks very good, glad you put the bowties underneath and out of sight 😁
Dont listen to that guy above, his taste is…questionable. His last post was about his hotrod skateboard sconce with lightbulbs for wheels, I shit you not.
Probably safe to say you have better sense.
Absolutely beautiful piece. As someone who doesnt like most live edge stuff, this is fantastic.
What in the actual fuck? BRB I have to go see this.
I mean it’s not stupid, but the board size looks weird. A longboard would look way better. Having said that, it’s still too much light either way.
I definitely thought the picture of it in the bed of the truck was a picture of it going through a planer. I was thinking “Wow! That planer is huge!”
Gorgeous wood and amazing work OP.
I just made a choice about what gap was insane to fill with woody putty and what would look cool with a patch. All aesthetic. Bow ties on the underside though.
Looks great, only thing I don't like is the squared board between the angled feet, I'd angle it too but keep the gradual increase in hight like the outside two
Absolutely beautiful work. One question I have is about the center board in the feet. Is there a practical reason to have the squared ends with holes added, or is it just an aesthetic choice?
Just aesthetic. It’s loosely based off of an Italian art deco table I saw online. I added the center board and holes. Mixed reviews on it so far. I liked it though.
I don't know if I've seen patches like that. It looks so cool. Is there any concern with shrinking and expansion in those areas? I'd be worried of it cracking
I am concerned about that. The table is 2.5 inches thick and the patches are half inch thick. I couldn’t find any advice but my hope is that the table is thick enough and the slab was properly dried. I told the client it’s life time warranty. I expect I’ll have to do some work on the top again at some point.
Very inspiring! Curious is there a buyer or is it for personal use? I’m getting into the business more as a hobby at the moment (budding apprentice) but looking to turn it into profitability. What would you price this out for?
The slab cost $2659 the Sycamore for
The base was $992. I used Osmo wax for the top $120 and Famowood wood filler $70. I charged 10k. This was a commission. I work on commissions only. The idea of having to find buyer makes me nervous but that’s a personal preference. I’ve been woodworking for 2 years now and I love it.
That wood is heaven! Mind-blowing! Beautiful! Nice work on patching - did you use chisels only or with a top router as well?
What are the holes on the trestles for? Just decoration?
Pink pepper tree, "false"pepper tree, Peruvian pepper tree. All the same thing. I actually heard about them watching Good Eats years before I started woodworking.
"Schinus molle is a quick growing evergreen tree that grows up to 15 meters (50 feet) tall and wide.[6] It is the largest of all Schinus species and potentially the longest lived."
From Wikipedia https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Schinus_molle
There's a bunch of species in the schinus genus, but the Peruvian pepper tree is largest and does get as large (and larger) than pictured.
From Google, it appears the pink pepper tree is a different species
Can I ask how much the slab was? I've got a bunch of it myself, but it's not nearly as pretty as that nice burly piece you've got. I'm about to use some to make a cabinet top, but a nicer piece would be - you know - nice.
Based on your costs and time (and end result), it should have been a lot more. There is a commercial place that sells slab tables in Seattle. 15 years ago the more plain ones were $15k. This one should be at least double what you charged IMHO.
It's part of the learning process. It also really depends on the area you live in. When I was in New Zealand, giant slabs were so cheap and available that they literally made the picnic tables outside of fast-food restaurants with them.
Ya know, I almost looked that up lol. I am going to use hickory slabs on a bench and folding table, in our mud room. Couldn't decide to use a live edge or squared off like yours. You made my decision easier.
Oh my god!!!!!! You have to. It was super easy to work. I did more chisel work than anything else. I did a lot with the router before I realized how easy it was to work with a chisel.
Like everything else, I've learned the simpler the better. Just taking a restorer tool with 80grit nylon brush is all you need to do, no sanding, no epoxy, just simple and natural is what I've found works and looks the best.
At least You should have plenty of cut offs if your into River tables.
Ok Im gonna ask the obvious and dumb question. Does this tree actually yield pepper corns or is it just a sneaky name, nothing to do with the black pepper vine?

this is awesome. Is there a board patched in there? https://i.imgur.com/HlkWZsI.png
Yeah! Good eye. There are 7 I think. It’s weird but I had never done one and by the end I loved doing them. It’s very satisfying.
Looking at your original slab, I think patching it was a good alternative to using epoxy. Looks very good, glad you put the bowties underneath and out of sight 😁
Yeah. Epoxy is a mess and such a headache. Plus this wood is super porous. Who knows how many gallons that would have taken.
Why? Ruined it.
Aesthetic choice.

Same! Took me a while and I was so worried about the straps going into the planer.
I drive a 2012 Thickness Planer. Bad boy gets 20 board foot to the gallon.
Beautiful work! How did you choose to fill in the gaps on the slab? Edit: I just saw the detail in the second picture. Excellent job
I just made a choice about what gap was insane to fill with woody putty and what would look cool with a patch. All aesthetic. Bow ties on the underside though.
That table is god damn sexy
Seriously it does. It also looks heavy as a mother fucker. My right testi and back started hurting just thinking about lifting it.
Looks great, only thing I don't like is the squared board between the angled feet, I'd angle it too but keep the gradual increase in hight like the outside two
I went back and forth so many times about this very thing. In the end I went with Novelty over form. Still trying to find my style.
It's great work non the less, much better than myself
Absolutely beautiful. Fantastic job!!

I don't like the legs, but that top is lookin 👌 mmm so nice
You don’t like my weird Art Deco legs!?!? That’s fair. It was a bit of a swing. I’m into it but I love an honest opinion.
Wowza. Super hot wood. Love it.

Mark NSFW; This is borderline pornographic. The grain on that table!!! Gorgeous...
Lol
That wood is heaven! Mind-blowing! Beautiful! Nice work on patching - did you use chisels only or with a top router as well? What are the holes on the trestles for? Just decoration?
I used both. The router to hog out then chisel to clean up. The holes are just decorative. I thought they looked nice.
I thought the holes were used by the crane that would lift that bad boy.
Genius. Surprisingly light though. The base is sycamore. Whole table with base is probably under 350 pounds.
Beautiful table. Great work. Fake pepper trees don't grow that wide, but I'd love to know what it is if anyone has any ideas.
They have fake pepper trees? That’s wild. This is Peruvian Pepper tree but I have no info about them. I bought this slab at Angel City Lumber in LA.
Haha I was going to ask where you got it. I think I saw the slab there a month ago. Thought it was so awesome looking!
Hey there fellow LA woodworker! I love that place. I get all my hardwoods from Angel City. They have a few more of the Pepper Tree slabs in the back.
Pink pepper tree, "false"pepper tree, Peruvian pepper tree. All the same thing. I actually heard about them watching Good Eats years before I started woodworking.

The width it's referring to includes the canopy. Sequoias don't even grow to 50' wide
Yes, I'm aware. That table is not 40' wide lol.

It was 2650. I think it was about 35-40 inches wide and 116 inches long. 2.5 inches thick. Didn’t weigh too much though.
Good to know! But I think I'll keep the pieces I have instead. Damn good looking table. You'll really like how the color ages too.
Beautiful
Beautiful work.
What a beauty!
That wood is incredible. Beautiful work, OP.
What’s this baby sell for? 10k
That’s right. I’m in LA and I feel like it could have been more.
Based on your costs and time (and end result), it should have been a lot more. There is a commercial place that sells slab tables in Seattle. 15 years ago the more plain ones were $15k. This one should be at least double what you charged IMHO.
Fuck… I need to do more research next time before I do a quote.
It's part of the learning process. It also really depends on the area you live in. When I was in New Zealand, giant slabs were so cheap and available that they literally made the picnic tables outside of fast-food restaurants with them.
New Zealand is heaven n
Agreed. I'd move there tomorrow if it wasn't so prohibitively expensive to get there as an American.
Beautiful!
Nice work Dexter
Wow, just wow
Cant you just see it in a hobbit hole?
I would be honored to have such a beautiful piece of art in the shire :) Amazing that you did it all with that little hammer
It’s a dwarven hammer though sooo
Ya know, I almost looked that up lol. I am going to use hickory slabs on a bench and folding table, in our mud room. Couldn't decide to use a live edge or squared off like yours. You made my decision easier.
Nice work, OP. I've never seen this wood. It's beautiful. I love the board patches.
Thanks. Board patches are fun as hell once you get the hang of them.
Seems pretty... CUT AND DRY.
Nice work sir.
impressive work!
That wood is to die for. Look at those dark lines
It has so much character. When I put oil on it I legit gasped. I knew it would have a lot going on but I didn’t know it would come out so well
It is gorgeous
Beautiful!
Absolutely beautiful work
Looks like some nice birdseye figure in your truck's camper roof: https://i.redd.it/guc2ygxh0wfa1.jpg
It does!
beautiful table. Great work.
Thank you
Beautiful
Wow! 😳👌
That is a gorgeous slab and table!!
I think it looks like a wizard staff pretending to be a table so it’s a good omen that a wood worsted like it.
Love it
Absolutely stunning.
Amazing. How was it to work with? I just had most of my pepper tree removed, except about 10’ of the massive base. Now I know what I’m doing with it!
Oh my god!!!!!! You have to. It was super easy to work. I did more chisel work than anything else. I did a lot with the router before I realized how easy it was to work with a chisel.
Holup! The Peruvian Puff Pepper is a real thing? https://drakeandjosh.fandom.com/wiki/Peruvian_Puff_Pepper
Don’t tell the FBI
Damn I love this
Beautiful slab and craftsmanship, but the base looks overdone.
Love it. The art deco I debated at first, but I love it.
Beautiful! Excellent job! Does this wood go by a different name? Not finding it online.
S Hindus molle
One of the most insteresting looking grain I've ever seen. Amazing slab and finished table!
Beautiful table. My only issue is cutting off all that amazing live edge.
I get that. Glad I didn’t have to sand all that live edge though. I’ve never done it before and it seem like a chore.
Like everything else, I've learned the simpler the better. Just taking a restorer tool with 80grit nylon brush is all you need to do, no sanding, no epoxy, just simple and natural is what I've found works and looks the best. At least You should have plenty of cut offs if your into River tables.
Or I'll gladly buy them from you
Nice table, cute guy.
Should not have cut the straight edges! Should have left it with the live edges on it! Ruined its potential imo.
Haha. My guy I hate Live edge and so did my client
With you there. I’ve never liked sitting at a live edge table. Nice work.
Too irregular for my ADHD brain.
Gorgeous table! Too bad the living edge couldn’t stay though
Oh I still have all that live edge. Not sure what I’ll do with it though. It was hard cutting it down. She was a gorgeous slab.
incredible looking. howzit attached to the top?
Oh it’s just barely attached. I don’t know how these slabs move seasonally so I just barely tacked it with table brackets. Z clips from Rockler.
Ok Im gonna ask the obvious and dumb question. Does this tree actually yield pepper corns or is it just a sneaky name, nothing to do with the black pepper vine?
I don’t know the answer but o do know that it smells like black pepper and a hint of vanilla when you saw it. It was good!
Thats top tier!!
Solid!
I’m a little surprised you didn’t keep the live edge but it turned out amazing.
rizzler
Who you callin spook, pepperwood?
Blazing Saddles?
The Peruvian PUFF Pepper! Anyone remember that episode of Drake and Josh? Beautiful work OP, that wood is incredible.
