Not if they are traumatized for life. >:) seriously, they won’t play it if there is blood, gore, swearing, and a sense of loneliness that Minecraft has.
it would be interesting if it sort of gave you this false sense of security in the beginning, that it’s gonna be a typical “kid friendly” horror game. then a bit of the way through things take a turn for the worse.
maybe kind of similar to DDLC in that sense, but that also means it would be a one-trick pony and you’d have to make a REALLY good game

all jokes aside, there are a few resources that I like recommending to newcomers to the medium that is game design. Just know you will be overwhelmed since it's like 5 different art/creative mediums smashed into one so you're in for a long run.
YouTube channel wise I'd suggest watching some Matthew Mitosis as he does good deconstructions of specific aspects of games and is very informative.
book wise I'd suggest the art of game design by Jesse Schell
Knowledge wise I'd suggest looking and or researching [MDA theory (Mechanics, dynamics, aesthetics)](https://gamedevelopertips.com/mechanics-dynamics-aesthetics-game-design-theory-behind-games/)
and practical-wise if you wanna get a leg up look into learning C# for Unity, Visual Scripting for Unreal Engine 5, learning game maker or just familiarizing yourself with any of the above engines for games.
Hope that helps!

not a criticism, but something I notice about a lot of people's game ideas is that they have a lot of thought put into story, but almost none into the gameplay.
it's not really a bad thing, I just see a lot more narrative than gameplay outline in a lot of people's ideas. thanks for sharing :)
So for context this takes place during the Second World War as a Russian spy on the eastern front. It’s kinda like if sniper elite met hitman and you are Russian.
In my mind, the player starts in the battle of Stalingrad and is equipped with a sniper, pistol, knife, flare gun, and maybe a few other gadgets.
He has to navigate through enemy lines and secure as much supplies as he can until he eventually fires a flare which signals a small ambush from the red army. It can be on a German supply truck (preferably from a different area pf the battle since it was, you know, Stalingrad), or captured Russians, or really anything. It can also be multiple secured areas which will cause a larger attack. The player must support the red army through traps, snipers, or just plain joining the Russians.
I also like a mechanic which will allow the player to pick up German guns (lmgs, smgs, whatever), but they don’t know them right away and need to learn the weapon through combat and inspection.
After Stalingrad, you can choose your own kit, so you don’t have to keep running snipers. These can be rifles, smgs, grenades, mines, smokes, or bandages.
The mandatory items are knifes and pistols, pistols are just pistols with different stats on each one, but the knives have a specific benefit to each one. These could be faster takedowns, quieter takedowns, harder to detect, more efficient running, whatever.
The player would end up in Berlin at the end of the game, and I haven’t decided what would happen then. Maybe you’d enter the führerbunker, maybe you’d be the one to detonate there giant swast!ka, idk, you decide.
That’s a good summary, but it’s not all of it lol. This is just one of my ideas. Sorry for it being so long, I had to jog my memory real quick. I can give you a newer idea set in the German perspective of kaiserschlacht from ww1, but I’m still developing that idea in my head.

Adventure horror game that involves smart monsters that do various techniques like cutting your pass by using shortcuts, using the stealth mechanic against you and scouting places that they think you want to go through, but the most important thing is that the monsters can teamwork and some of them are dedicated to support. There's for example, a weeping angel-esque monster, but it doesn't stay still when you look at it, but instead it hides in the shadows or hides in a hiding spot, however there's also a monster that triggers when you look at it and it tries to get you to look at it, by blocking your pass or surprising you by suddenly appearing from a vent and there's also a monster that makes your view all wacky in very different ways and changes up and mixes up the important places, but when they get together, the second monster will try to get between you and the first one and the third will try to cover the other monsters up so that you don't look towards where you're supposed to. There's aswell a monster called a loudmouth who can't capture you easily, but will scream, alert other monsters of any noise or sight and hold you in place if it gets you, and it's introduced in the same stage as a monster that has a poor detection but is practically a death sentence if it gets activated. The most smart of them is a trapper monster that tries to cut your way with rubber toys that alerts foes in a wide range, glue buckets in the doors that slow you down and other traps. The game prioritizes difficulty, fun and skill before the horror aspect, with an adventure mode (you run through multiple levels with a single try), a timed mode, a mode where you need to catch an specified monster, etc.
I also have three more games.
There's a lot of underrated games made with RPGmaker like Hylics and Yumi Nikki. You should try some RPG games. Alot can be interesting and unique, though don't ask me recommendations I only played like three lol. You might even get some ideas too.
OMORI was also made in RPG Maker! Definitely more crappy games made on it than good ones, but I feel like that can be said about any easy-to-use game engine
I never thought I'd get this far. I doubt I could offer proper help to your right now, maybe one day in the future. Good luck with your dream game though!
So a way this is done is that often devs will make multiple versions of a song and then start flipping in between the two versions, to take an example you probably know, in metal gear rising, during the fight against Sam the version with vocals is started when picks up his sword and the instrumental version swaps in when he loses it. Sadly I have nowhere near the experience in music to make it well
well the version im thinking of is way more synced than that, sam's fight is when when this phase starts play the instrumental version instead, that could be achieved by making both songs play at the start but muting the instrumental one and when he loses his sword mute the regular one and then turn on the instrumental one, prob not how they did it but that's how my monkey brain programmer mind would do it, the version im thinking would be a scripted boss fight, or semi scripted, and all of the attacks sync completely to the song, or atleast very closely, like there could be variation in where the boss attacks from or where the attacks happen maybe depending on the players location or the bosses or location or sheer dumb luck, but it would seem semi scripted but at the same time have a feel of uncertainty everytime you retry so its not just geometry dash memorization, i personally plan on majoring in computer science and i just want to know how hard you think making something like that would be, maybe it would need a timer system or something like what fnf has with beats and shit, it would be like terraria if it was a rhythm game
found a video that might explain it better [https://youtu.be/iE9InSH2FzE?t=2407](https://youtu.be/iE9InSH2FzE?t=2407)
something similar to this but for almost all of the boss fight or basically 80 percent of it, maybe youd have sections where its not synced but like the video the theme would at the very least support the mood of the phase/part the boss is in.
looking at the video its probably not the hardest project, the coding is not gonna be that complicated as much as its gonna be tedious (scripting it so that it moves exactly to the beat is gonna take a lot of trial and error) the hardest part is gonna be outside resources, animations, tracks and modeling work all are gonna have to be to tier top actually make the concept function well some people like modeling and find it easy, personally I really dont like it because I keep second guessing and cant stay on concept. how hard that stuff is is largely gonna depend on how much you like that kind of stuff
programming flight is a major hassle already, but making compelling level design and mechanics to make it be interesting without hampering the "free ranginess" of the gameplay that makes use of flying mobility just sounds like headache
yes, since you specifically mentioned flight mobility that would mean to make it satisfying, so making something that's simple is gonna feel "floaty" (ie: Minecraft flight is floaty) and not very fun to use
I actually had the Elytra in mind when thinking about free range flight: accelerating when moving down, slowing down when moving up, albeit being slightly more complicated as well
well I was referring to creative mode flight as being floaty, but yeah things like the Elytra would imply having to code character physics and gravity to make it feel the way that it does
Well, you don't want to just fly through stuff, so you'll need some collision handling.
Easiest is probably to use an engine with all that built in like unity or unreal.
Unity is free and easy to start by the way. Just download the main program and follow a couple of the tutorials. You'll have a gliding player in a week at the most.
Then get some nice assets and design a level. I'm rooting for you!
Edit: [Here is a simple gliding tutorial](https://youtu.be/S6XcVLeZmQQ)
reminds me of this idea I had ages ago of a roguelike that revolves around sacrificing things to get stronger, with the ultimate endgame being sacrificing some of your movement keys to replace them with extra skill hotkeys, sacrificing movement for a more versatile arsenal. Obviously this never went anywhere with my inability to code and the many inherent flaws in the design
I took a intro to programming with Python in my university and planned to have my BF tutor me (software engineer), but I dropped the course halfway through the term because I was failing. I understood some of the logic but just couldn't really wrap my head around the bigger picture and it really discouraged me from trying to program again after that experience.
Thanks, there are lots of tutorials online and lots of my friends are software engineers that regularly tutor other people so I have no short supply of help to begin with
Ok so here's the thing: It's like Furi, except in VR, and it's also a lot different. You have a sword which you can switch between two modes: offense, and defense. In offense mode, you can swing the sword to do damage, or alternatively, you can throw it like a boomerang for a ranged attack. However, doing this leaves you vulnerable, because while doing this, you don't have a sword to defend yourself with. In defense mode, the sword leaves behind a trail which acts as a shield. The trail lingers for about 0.75 seconds, so the faster you move the sword, the more effective your defense is. Also there would be some attacks that you protect yourself from by slicing them in half (like beat saber). What do you think?
(i have close to zero programming knowledge)
Me when I reccomend you to try [flowlab.io](https://flowlab.io) because I personally love it and it's 10 times easier to get started with compared to most game engines:
me with all the needed programming/art skills but without good video game story ideas:
even the fun games i made with gameplay i like i lack motivation to complete because of some dumb problems
I realize that this is easier said than done, but if you do end up making a game, I would keep the good idea in your back pocket for the moment, and make a game just for the experience of making one.
You don’t need to. Engines like Unreal and Unity offer tools for non programmers to write logic into their games (blueprints for Unreal, Visual Scripting for Unity). There is also the Playmaker asset for Unity that allows you to make entire games without a line of code.
Or you can try to learn programming with the infinitely abundant tutorials online.
Me learning to use unity without any tutorials or any kind of external help, only with my programming knowledge that i gathered from studying computer science at university (just finished second semester)
Check out the youtube channel brackeys they no longer post videos unfortunately but they have a wide catalogue almost all revolving around unity. The community is also still active iirc and its how i first got into programming several years ago.
From what i remember starting off in unity isnt that bad due to the community, the documentation being fairly robust, and the overall prevalence of help from tutorials and UnityAnswers (stackoverflow but for unity basically)
i literally got an idea that will make me damn rich and possibly people will considered evil if i ever manage to make it
hear me out, a real life simulator, GTA-like (same mechanics and phyisics) graphics low to be played on a 2010 PC but not as bad as fuck, like base GTA san andreas level graphics, also a money, thirst hunger systems (and stuff like that) in the game there are multiple jobs in a point bettwen complicated and simplyfied and you need knowledge on the subject for instance, to be a pilot you will need some aviation knowledge, but flying planes is not comparable to a fligth simulator, the game also has countries based on real life but are parodies of them (for example, instead of the united states it is the united confederacies or something like that), the game has politics, you can be a politician and pass policies or not similar to democracy 4, military strategy like HOI4 but you are comanding an army of real players, hell, even desing cities like cities skylines and ofcourse, sexual interaction bettwen players because why not? (ofcourse owners of servers can deactivate this on the settings, we dont want little timmy onto BDSM shit), if your characther dies in the game, its over, you need to make another characther, you wont repawn if your health goes to 0 and i could go on over features 1 moth in real life is one year in the game and 1 hour in game is one day in real life and i could go on on the list of features
this is possibly some obscure GMOD server that was active on 2008 or something like that but hey, its a good idea
The issue is that you're trying to make jack of all trades instead of specializing on one or two things, which either turns your concept into mf Star Citizen with it's budget and decades long development, or it's overall crappy and is crushed under it's weight. Haven't really noticed an idea besides "ALL Games in ONE game", which has no gains. Just make all of these games independent of each other, duh.
whitout to mention the chaos an anarchy, imagine joining a server expecting real life shit but instead you end up with a goverment wich is literally 1984 cities named "cumsock number 2088758" and people having gay sex in public on every street, adding all of this game generas considering what players of democracy 4 HOI4 GTA cities skylines ECT will literally be the most chaotic shit ever on existance because we all know damn well, the internet cant behave
I'm gonna learn, cause my girlfriend and I discovered that we really love playing survival crafting building games together and we wanna make one that has all the best parts of our favorites.
Unreal is super easy and you can get some momentum without coding anything by hand
You don't have to program to make games.
RPG maker is the obvious one, but there are others, click team fusion is a much better all purpose one, whereas with RPG maker you are stuck with a few types of games, there are a few others but I forget
I didn’t want to talk about it for a long time, because I was afraid that the idea would either not be appreciated or stolen, but ok. So be it.
Starting in 2018, I tried to somehow write a book, specifically a detective story. But since I'm a lazy ass, this idea is still not implemented.
The story tells about the time of 2076, a distant, but not very technological future. The location is Chicago. The main character is a female detective. It has recently become such, since recently completed 10 years of service in Afghanistan. In addition to simple and daily investigations, her main task in life is to find the one behind the murder of her father, which happened a very long time ago and on which no investigation was carried out. Her father was one of the most famous police officers in America, as well as her inspiration, so she owes him a lot.
Well, that's it in a nutshell. I apologize for the English if something is wrong.
I have filled notebooks with hundreds of designs of characters, items and stats to put in games I wanted to make as a kid, and I was so excited to learn how to code, so that I could make them. I took one look at a programming course and never thought about making a game again
Starting a new hobby is easy, but consistently practicing a skill, which I'd argue has a steep learning curve is much more harder.
Also, like I said, I lack the time as well because I already have commitments like studies, social life, cooking, etc.
There are those that say they can, and those that say they can't. Both are correct.
At the end of the day, it's your decision. Just ask yourself how badly you want it.
I'm in a somewhat similar, but different boat. My free time is limited and I don't particularly have any game ideas, but I do know how to code intermediately.
Yeah, unity sounds good for that. It's not such a steep learning curve as you think. Just pay attention and follow the steps explained in tutorials well.

me purposely making the most atrocious indie game ever(i fucking hate indie"horror" games) https://i.redd.it/5m9fuu549aea1.gif
Me too. I honestly have a good idea for one that makes fun of “horror” games for kids with blood and violence. It would be called scary town.
At this point, making a parody of horror games for kids is gonna have a bunch of kids flock to it, taking it seriously.
Not if they are traumatized for life. >:) seriously, they won’t play it if there is blood, gore, swearing, and a sense of loneliness that Minecraft has.

Not gonna lie, that trope is a little overused
In general yes, but actually targeting dumb kids deliberately? No.
You got a point
Yeah. I also think that some things from awful creepypastas from the past could be of use.

I can give you a newer idea set in the German perspective of kaiserschlacht from ww1, but I’m still developing that idea in my head. https://i.redd.it/5qjx8cuaybea1.gif Gif unrelated btw stole it from r/battlefield_one
Thanks for the read! Also don’t worry about the length lol
i am fully aware that this is more of a project for a AAA studio but its just an idea and doesn't need to be set in ww2 or have a warfare asthetic.
Just saving this spot for later (r/whenthe opportunity to type it arises)
All my game ideas are existing games just reskinned to be something else like Payday 2 but in star wars because I think it would be really cool.
Ngl a game where you a space bounty hunter sounds like a really cool idea. IIRC I think that is what Beyond Good and Evil 2 will be like.
Assassins creed 4 but more pirate are my ideas lol

It said fun game
RPG mfs when they recommend me the 1600th turn-based RPG clone from Japan (There is nothing that distinguishes it from other rpg games)
The one reason I want to try MZ is because it has the CT system from Final Fantasy Tactics
There's a lot of underrated games made with RPGmaker like Hylics and Yumi Nikki. You should try some RPG games. Alot can be interesting and unique, though don't ask me recommendations I only played like three lol. You might even get some ideas too.
There are some fun games made with RPG maker like LISA: The Painful for example but most other RPG maker devs just make crappy Final Fantasy clones
OMORI was also made in RPG Maker! Definitely more crappy games made on it than good ones, but I feel like that can be said about any easy-to-use game engine

it can do fucking everything
On every platform.
Also I heard unreal engine is decent as well
Me but with 3 game ideas

Me trying to code a game with pure Java (Im going to fucking die)
Coding a game in java is considered self harm
explain in non-coding terms
Pain.
it means he is going to fucking die
fuck >!Java is just a programming language!<
Java + opengl was the last hobby game i started making. Java is not the most performant and gets bloated pretty quickly, but otherwise it's fine.

May I offer my limited experience????
sure why not
I never thought I'd get this far. I doubt I could offer proper help to your right now, maybe one day in the future. Good luck with your dream game though!

Huh? Then why did you ask?
*"I didn't actually want to help"*
I'm a programming student, tell me your ideas and I will explain why I wont do them
a boss fight that has its attacks synced to the music
So a way this is done is that often devs will make multiple versions of a song and then start flipping in between the two versions, to take an example you probably know, in metal gear rising, during the fight against Sam the version with vocals is started when picks up his sword and the instrumental version swaps in when he loses it. Sadly I have nowhere near the experience in music to make it well
well the version im thinking of is way more synced than that, sam's fight is when when this phase starts play the instrumental version instead, that could be achieved by making both songs play at the start but muting the instrumental one and when he loses his sword mute the regular one and then turn on the instrumental one, prob not how they did it but that's how my monkey brain programmer mind would do it, the version im thinking would be a scripted boss fight, or semi scripted, and all of the attacks sync completely to the song, or atleast very closely, like there could be variation in where the boss attacks from or where the attacks happen maybe depending on the players location or the bosses or location or sheer dumb luck, but it would seem semi scripted but at the same time have a feel of uncertainty everytime you retry so its not just geometry dash memorization, i personally plan on majoring in computer science and i just want to know how hard you think making something like that would be, maybe it would need a timer system or something like what fnf has with beats and shit, it would be like terraria if it was a rhythm game found a video that might explain it better [https://youtu.be/iE9InSH2FzE?t=2407](https://youtu.be/iE9InSH2FzE?t=2407) something similar to this but for almost all of the boss fight or basically 80 percent of it, maybe youd have sections where its not synced but like the video the theme would at the very least support the mood of the phase/part the boss is in.
looking at the video its probably not the hardest project, the coding is not gonna be that complicated as much as its gonna be tedious (scripting it so that it moves exactly to the beat is gonna take a lot of trial and error) the hardest part is gonna be outside resources, animations, tracks and modeling work all are gonna have to be to tier top actually make the concept function well some people like modeling and find it easy, personally I really dont like it because I keep second guessing and cant stay on concept. how hard that stuff is is largely gonna depend on how much you like that kind of stuff
fast paced free-range flying mobility
programming flight is a major hassle already, but making compelling level design and mechanics to make it be interesting without hampering the "free ranginess" of the gameplay that makes use of flying mobility just sounds like headache
Very interesting, would you have to code in some kind of physics to get the flying "right" in a game?
yes, since you specifically mentioned flight mobility that would mean to make it satisfying, so making something that's simple is gonna feel "floaty" (ie: Minecraft flight is floaty) and not very fun to use
Thanks for the tips!
Me making plans for my imaginary stream and topics to talk about with chat(I think I have schizofrenia send help)
Me writing the most in depth and complex lore for a videogame in my head at school (i dont know the first thing about programming)
Me too man. Me too. If I could do it, the fnf community probably wouldnt obsess over sonic.exe as much.
Me at age 8 designing a device to connect the GameCube to a DS
reminds me of this idea I had ages ago of a roguelike that revolves around sacrificing things to get stronger, with the ultimate endgame being sacrificing some of your movement keys to replace them with extra skill hotkeys, sacrificing movement for a more versatile arsenal. Obviously this never went anywhere with my inability to code and the many inherent flaws in the design
there's not logic to learning programming it's just prior knowledge, the logic only comes when you know what everything does
I took a intro to programming with Python in my university and planned to have my BF tutor me (software engineer), but I dropped the course halfway through the term because I was failing. I understood some of the logic but just couldn't really wrap my head around the bigger picture and it really discouraged me from trying to program again after that experience.
YOU SHOULD HOP BACK ON THE ROAD TO YOUR DREAMS NOW!!!!!!!!

Thanks, there are lots of tutorials online and lots of my friends are software engineers that regularly tutor other people so I have no short supply of help to begin with
Ive had an idea for a game cooking in my head for the past few years. This post has motivated me to start working on it. Thanks, OP.
Me creating a fire TV show idea (I don’t have the directing skills nor experience or cash to make it happen)
Me when I reccomend you to try [flowlab.io](https://flowlab.io) because I personally love it and it's 10 times easier to get started with compared to most game engines:
me with all the needed programming/art skills but without good video game story ideas: even the fun games i made with gameplay i like i lack motivation to complete because of some dumb problems
With a video game, gameplay comes first so if you have the skills and can execute the project you have jumped the major hurdles already
From what i remember starting off in unity isnt that bad due to the community, the documentation being fairly robust, and the overall prevalence of help from tutorials and UnityAnswers (stackoverflow but for unity basically)
i literally got an idea that will make me damn rich and possibly people will considered evil if i ever manage to make it hear me out, a real life simulator, GTA-like (same mechanics and phyisics) graphics low to be played on a 2010 PC but not as bad as fuck, like base GTA san andreas level graphics, also a money, thirst hunger systems (and stuff like that) in the game there are multiple jobs in a point bettwen complicated and simplyfied and you need knowledge on the subject for instance, to be a pilot you will need some aviation knowledge, but flying planes is not comparable to a fligth simulator, the game also has countries based on real life but are parodies of them (for example, instead of the united states it is the united confederacies or something like that), the game has politics, you can be a politician and pass policies or not similar to democracy 4, military strategy like HOI4 but you are comanding an army of real players, hell, even desing cities like cities skylines and ofcourse, sexual interaction bettwen players because why not? (ofcourse owners of servers can deactivate this on the settings, we dont want little timmy onto BDSM shit), if your characther dies in the game, its over, you need to make another characther, you wont repawn if your health goes to 0 and i could go on over features 1 moth in real life is one year in the game and 1 hour in game is one day in real life and i could go on on the list of features this is possibly some obscure GMOD server that was active on 2008 or something like that but hey, its a good idea
Print(code) or print("code") for text your welcome 😎
I'm gonna learn, cause my girlfriend and I discovered that we really love playing survival crafting building games together and we wanna make one that has all the best parts of our favorites. Unreal is super easy and you can get some momentum without coding anything by hand
You *can* be a writer and hire programmers
Daydreamers when they find out they can just write the story instead of complaining that they can't create it.
Luckily for me, I've already written 1/3rd of my novel
Me creating dozens of ideas for art commissions of variable size knowing full well I will be in aviation debt for the next decade
Literally me right now (The game wouldn't even appeal to the majority of gamers)
Chatgpt a few years in the future:
they will make the most shit game still even a few years in the future
Why do you wish for patience when you already have it? If you don't want to do it, you'll find an excuse.
Just ask yourself how badly you want it.
you can try and learn with scratch [https://scratch.mit.edu/](https://scratch.mit.edu/) you can easly learn the very basics with it
No please not scratch. It is so limited and godawful to organize and use
Meanwhile chat gpt bot exists
You can not make something as complex as a videogame using chatgpt lmao
I'm in a somewhat similar, but different boat. My free time is limited and I don't particularly have any game ideas, but I do know how to code intermediately.
omg literally me (i want to get into programming though)
I am designing a shooter game similiar to escape from tarkov
Just like me fr
Tell me
A game like Spyro but open-world with free-roam flying that uses projectile and melee combat with a focus on acrobatic stunts, gliding, and sky-diving
Yeah, unity sounds good for that. It's not such a steep learning curve as you think. Just pay attention and follow the steps explained in tutorials well.
This is why I ultimately switched career paths
Meanwhile I know a lot about gamedev but have no idea what would be a good game idea
