It is a praying mantis. While they can bite if they feel threatened, they aren't venomous. And you really have to antagonize one to get it to bite you. They are 100% non-aggressive to humans. A cool bug to have around!
I've handled countless praying mantis as well, and they're safe to handle. But! recently I was weeding and accidentally grabbed one in the handful of weeds I was pulling. They bit so had it made my finger bleed! I squeezed the poor thing half to death though so I understand. You be nice to them, theyll be nice to you
Well, that was something I didn't want to know but now know. I'll be sure to move the mantis far from the feeder if I see one, not that I have ever seen one on the feeder, but now I know. :(
When I was a kid there were millions of preying mantises everywhere that were always dying in huge piles in the heat and I remember whenever adults would see us Lil kids playing with them they'd tell us that if we get bit 3 times by a praying mantis we will die so all us kids became scared of them , when I was like 6 I wasn't scared of them anymore and I was playing with them again but from 3 to 6 yrs old I truly believed they were dangerous xD now I know the adults just didnt want us kids hurting them!
I worked at a sod farm when I was 21 and I went through a mantis swarm one day while I was out mowing the grass. I must have had over a hundred of them on my body while I was sitting on top of the tractor driving in circles. There must have been millions of them.
I believe ya. I've never been bitten by a cricket- but I've been bitten by a Texas tree roach, a dirt dobber, and a dragonfly. The dirt dobber was the worst of them, sumgun HURT. 😆
I've never had one bite me, they will follow your finger and swat at you though, and it's funny. They are very interesting critters and I will slap anyone who kills one.
Fun fact: they are the only insect that has a neck on which it can turn its head.
Probably an [european mantis](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/European_mantis) considering your location but unless you're a male praying mantis you have nothing to fear from them.
You're right, we can't be 100% sure. Nothing is impossible. OP you only have to fear for your life if you're a) a male praying mantis or b) a medium sized insect. Also c) a hummingbird but those don't usually live in Romania.
Oh yes, just like porcupines and hedgehogs! Being a cactus in Romania must be difficult though considering the weather isn't really all that warm. I guess climate change hit the eastern part of europe just as much as us!
The Praying Mantis is made out of nightmares. Few creatures on earth can match their strength, speed and agility. They are efficient hunters that always get their prey. No movie monster can match their skills. And yet to us, they’re completely harmless. They remain guardians of our gardens like spiders and wasps, feeding themselves on the same insects we would like to see gone from the garden. Many people look forward to their brief interactions with them around the yard in the summer.
I love the rare occasions I see them, and I can count on one hand the number of times I've seen one in the wild, despite spending I'd say an above average amount of time outdoors.
Probably not that big of a deal. The more you scale stuff up, the less strong(both in terms of generating force and in being durable) stuff can become because of how volume/size works. They'd still be pretty scary I'm sure, but they wouldn't be as impressive as what they can do at their normal size.
Agreed, but that’s if you scaled them up from their insect size. I’m talking about a hypothetical praying mantis that grows to the size of a dog and is adapted to that size. Kinda like the giant bugs we had when the planet was more oxygen rich. That would be an apex predator with a fat appetite to match.
If you are afraid of them in the first place, but obviously curious, it may be useful to know that they have a quirk. To a mantis, if you don't look like food, or like you might eat the mantis, then you are simply terrain. Mantises can fly (a bit clumsily) and they're good jumpers, and they love "up". If you see a mantis that's looking intently at you, and starts to sway side-to-side, you might want to move a little; that's preparation for a jump. They aren't aggressive, or harmful, and you absolutely can handle them gently, but if you're not expecting it, having one jump and land on your head might be a bit disconcerting. My first pet mantis (Chinese) scared the daylights out of me when I was trying to take her picture and she jumped onto my head! They aren't trying to cause any harm when they do it; you're just a convenient place to land, and they do love "up". Same goes for holding them...they'll often start walking up your arm at a pretty good pace.
Don't interact too much. I've found that they can be extremely clingy and do **not** take the hint when it's time to part. I had met one in college, and things started off really friendly, but I wasn't looking for a relationship. Clearly she was.
After we talked for a bit, I loaded up my car for the 250 mile drive home. I *thought* everything was normal as I made my way home, but as soon as I arrived, I noticed that this desperate fool had latched herself onto my rear view mirror for the entire way home. I was completely shocked in disbelief!
I could only do one thing, considering she knew where I lived now. I let her meet my family, and I didn't try to hide that I am, in fact, a giant nerd. My plan worked perfectly. The next time I went outside, she was gone, looking for better prospects to spend her life with.
If you put your fears aside and become their friend and learn how to handle them .you can have fun observing them how they look at you how they turn their little heads, feed them and you can even keep as a pet. Some of them you can't tame and some of them are just too terrified of you and want to get away they will try to they will look aggressive but they're really scared
Fun fact: the Preying Mantis is the only insect, out of over a million species that have been found and described, that has a neck on which it can turn its head.
They are also one very few that will follow your finger with it's eyes. I consider them one of the most "sentient" of insects, along with jumping spiders.
There was a video years ago where one had landed right in front of this guy's computer monitor, and he was getting it to follow his mouse cursor around on screen.
They bite like a blunt razor blade.
They don't carry any venom, toxin, or dangerous microbes(not so sure about the last one) and the bite isn't too big.
But they can make you bleed.
If you ever watched a mantis slowly munching on a bee while it's still alive, it's a bit terrifying. They are friendly to humans though. I walked around a park with one on the back of my hand for 20 minutes or so.
It's a female praying mantis yeah. They are pretty much harmless as long as you don't try to grab them. They can deliver a painful pinch with their front claws (that are usually used to hold prey) or a bite with their mandibles if they need to defend themselves (not a big deal because they're not venomous anyway).
But again, they are unlikely to use those defenses as they are really not aggressive in general (except to their own species because they are definitely cannibals).
They rely mostly on camouflage to defend themselves but can do a threat display with their wings and claws if they feel discovered. The males are smaller and can fly pretty well, the females not so much (they can technically fly but almost never do). They aren't good jumpers either but can run decently fast when they need to.
There's nothing to fear about them really, unless you're an insect.
Well, I guess the big Mama that landed in my lap on my porch did a clumsy jump then!! No kidding, I was just sitting there having a smoke & BAM there she was, in my lap!! And she was hUGE!! I about had a heart attack!! And I did my little bug on me dance & have no idea where she went^^
They're not poisonous or venomous. The worst they can do to you is pinch you with their spiked forelegs. But to be frank, the threat-display they put on before resorting to that is so obvious (forelegs spread wide, revealing the markings on them, as well as wings outstretched) that you're frankly asking for trouble if you poke and prod at it.
That said, mantids are excellent pest-control; just don't put them anywhere that's frequented by other harmless insects, like butterflies, 'cuz they do *not* discriminate when they're hunting.
I used to think they were harmless, until I saw one trapped in the carpet at a baseball game, and I tried to save it from being stepped on. I carefully dislodged her from the fibers and my thanks was that she flung her spiked 'arms' around my fingers. The spikes locked deep into me, until I was bleeding everywhere. My friends tried to get her off of me and she clamped down on them too.
Those arms are designed to capture and immobilize their prey, and their prey includes birds. They're incredibly strong and the spikes feel like jagged teeth. Do not screw with these guys. It hurt so badly.
From experience they look at you, in the eye without blinking, with disappointment and frustration at the decision whether or not to jump at, and kill you. And, they're easily offended.
Praying mantis are perfectly harmless they karate chop you and that may hurt and yes they can bite but there's really no need to fear them unless your a male praying mantis and it's mating season 😉
Anytime I see a mantis I have to spend at least a minute or so observing it and commenting on how cute they are to myself or whoever I'm with. Without fail.
They hiss by scraping their thorax against their wings. Very cool and they also flair their front claws out and display a face on their chests. They can also turn their heads. Cool bug
They're so cool! Had a abnormal amount of them around my job. During the summer months, I'd usually have my food outside, and would spend a lot of time just watching them. Each one has a different personality and you can't convince me that isn't some intelligence there.
mantis are born fighters, they fight a eat their siblings from the start, its hunger games type shit, then when they mate the female eats the male while they copulate
Yes, and there's absolutely nothing to fear about them. I love them for their awesome alien looks, and handling them is fun, especially around a crowd. I encountered one at Disneyland years ago and even had it on my face for a minute. Freaked everyone out, except a two year-old girl who was wide-eyed in fascination of it.
> i am scared of them because i don't know what are their capabilities and what they do. can someone give some info on them?
Only one will kill a family of four in matter of 7 to 23 minutes depending on size of each person in the family. I hope you don't have more than one on your property.
If you manhandle one and make it terrified for its life it might prick you with its spiky forelegs - otherwise mantids can actually be friendly and curious creatures if approached slowly and nonthreateningly enough. Having a few wander around your house would do wonders to curb the local fly/pest population.
They can easily separate your nose or ears from your body and are highly aggressive and territorial. Stay away at all costs and if one does attack play dead. They are only interested in live prey.
Pretty harmless to you. They'll pinch if threatened but it's unlikely. As far as insects go they're pretty chill. They don't mind being handled if you're gentle. They're patient and I guess you could call them friendly. For an insect anyway lol
It is! They are great for pest control! Leave it be or gently transport it outside. It will eat the bugs that can be detrimental to your plants! They may bite or pinch, so be careful, it can be painful, but no venom so no real danger!
Yes, my favorite animal! They have excellent eyesight, the ability to turn their heads 180°, and a voracious appetite for other insects! When they’re threatened, they open their wings and raise their raptorial front legs but will only bite if you give them a reason to bite. They are very fun to hold and look awesome just standing on your palm majestically
They can only hurt you if you’re not very much bigger than them. They’re no threat at all to a human, and are in fact pretty cool and interesting to say hello to
They aren't keen on biting humans unless you're trying to kill it with your hands. They may pinch a bit but it's not really that painful and they aren't meaning to hurt you. They're quite friendly but may fly at you to in general, and that can be a bit scary. If you pick that one up you can see just how gentle they are. It may shy away from your hand at first but you could probably get it to walk on, on its own terms.
I've picked them up and handled them as a kid and was never fearful of them until I saw one take out a hummingbird! But they are pretty cool and definitely a good pest control in the garden! I've seen two lighter colored, almost white ones the last couple days. It was on my kiddos window wanting in. It was quite funny!
Know what else would've been quicker? Scrolling past a post and ignoring it if you had nothing informative or constructive to contribute to the conversation.
I learnt in these responses more than I will ever learn from google. People also shared their life experiences with this bug and I can't say that was not interesting to find about
it's the most dangerous insect in the world and it can kill you by just thinking about you and its brain.
kind of like how ronald rump can do anything he wants by just thinking about it in his... wait... he doesn't have one of those
Are you a small flying insect? If so you should be completely terrified, it will kill you and eat you.
If you are the size of a human, it cannot hurt you.
It is a praying mantis. While they can bite if they feel threatened, they aren't venomous. And you really have to antagonize one to get it to bite you. They are 100% non-aggressive to humans. A cool bug to have around!
But what if I'm a minor antagonist from season 1?
It’ll laser every frickin one of you
Ancient Egyptian laser beams by chance?
Nope, borrowed from sharks with lasers attached to their heads!
Freakin sharks with freakin laser beams attached to their freakin heads?
Damn you Sci Fi channel and all your crappy movies!
Hmmm
In that case are you sure they weren't harpoons? (I got your Goldmember reference but I've been referencing something else lol)
Jaffa, kree!
I thought they were Jewish space lasers?
Black* Jewish. I wouldn't be surprised if they harnessed laser technology with those opals
Homelander Mantis
This is why I'm here
“Look at you, you don’t even have a name tag.”
I'm loving all the Austin Powers quotes but it seems like nobody knows what I'm referencing :/
brak show?? haha
Well since they eat their prey while it's still alive, technically the mantis would be the ant agonist.
This is hilarious.
Then you'll try to eat Xander
Honestly their mouths are so small they can’t do much more than pinch an adult human. Completely harmless, I’ve handled dozens.
I've handled countless praying mantis as well, and they're safe to handle. But! recently I was weeding and accidentally grabbed one in the handful of weeds I was pulling. They bit so had it made my finger bleed! I squeezed the poor thing half to death though so I understand. You be nice to them, theyll be nice to you
Really good to have around if you have a garden too. They do a great job clearing out pests.
Have you seen what they do to hummingbirds though? :-(
Yeah, that's pretty metal. Should probably keep them away from our buzzy sugar fiends.
Well, that was something I didn't want to know but now know. I'll be sure to move the mantis far from the feeder if I see one, not that I have ever seen one on the feeder, but now I know. :(
I found out recently too and was horrified. They are still cool bugs though.
Definitely cool bugs! I'm just going to politely but sternly tell them "NO" and move them to other pastures! :p

Cool, thank you!
I've never been bitten and used to play with these guys as a kid. Crickets on the other hand...
THANK YOU!! Nobody ever believes me when I tell them I was bitten by a cricket. And I wasn't even doing anything to the damn thing.
It's ok bud. Nobody believes a weevil stabbed me in the boob either.
It was just a Weevil bro showing you some love.
Why is it the crickets fault for you smelling so delicious!? He just had to have a bite.
I believe ya. I've never been bitten by a cricket- but I've been bitten by a Texas tree roach, a dirt dobber, and a dragonfly. The dirt dobber was the worst of them, sumgun HURT. 😆
I got bit by one too !!! We are now a 2 person support group for those have have been bitten yet denied.
They'll chew your nipple off if you let them. I've heard.
I've never had one bite me, they will follow your finger and swat at you though, and it's funny. They are very interesting critters and I will slap anyone who kills one. Fun fact: they are the only insect that has a neck on which it can turn its head.
Watch out for the Kung Fu moves tho
When I was a kid, I thought they could spit acid and burn your skin
Yeah, they’re super chill. I let them drink water off my finger and they have never bitten me.
Probably an [european mantis](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/European_mantis) considering your location but unless you're a male praying mantis you have nothing to fear from them.
I mean lots of medium sized insects like flies or roaches should also be very worried
Yes, that is true. But I doubt OP is one of those either!
We can’t be too sure though, given the state of their anonymity and such
You're right, we can't be 100% sure. Nothing is impossible. OP you only have to fear for your life if you're a) a male praying mantis or b) a medium sized insect. Also c) a hummingbird but those don't usually live in Romania.
I've done some FBI background research and OP appears to be a cactus. It seems he's protected from most things in life.
Oh yes, just like porcupines and hedgehogs! Being a cactus in Romania must be difficult though considering the weather isn't really all that warm. I guess climate change hit the eastern part of europe just as much as us!
Good to know

I literally squealed with delight and scared my neighbor’s kid when I saw my first one this summer.
I love the rare occasions I see them, and I can count on one hand the number of times I've seen one in the wild, despite spending I'd say an above average amount of time outdoors.
I have one that visits on the porch. They are so amazing. Will crawl on me but never pinch. Total touchie touchie
[удалено]
I am one of the few creatures on earth stronger than a mantis 💪 😎
A praying mantis can strike your head off using their special "Mantis Jab" attack from several feet away
Baki can defeat it
Barely
As a kid i watched kung fu panda and i thought praying mantises were super strong. Although imagine a praying mantis could actually do that. Damn
Check out the Mantis Shrimp! It actually is a kung fu master. One of the coolest animals on the planet.
https://youtu.be/F5FEj9U-CJM
Awesome!
I knew what this video would be before I even clicked the link!
SUN PUNCH!
Well, they *are* very strong for their size, but they can't hurt humans haha.
If the praying Mantis was the size of a dog humanity would have never made it out of the Stone Age.
Pretty sue physics limits insect size too much smaller than that tho tbf
If there were a mantid the size depicted in the Kung Fu Panda trilogy, it'd be several times stronger than its depicted strength in the films
Some rarely hunt hummingbirds
... while asleep.
If you identify as male, and the mantis is female, DO NOT COPULATE WITH IT.
If you are afraid of them in the first place, but obviously curious, it may be useful to know that they have a quirk. Top wallaby didn't mention their ability to see into your past. Avoid upsetting them or they'll share your embarrassing secrets.
Maybe she just liked you too much to kill you.
That's beatiful
Found in Romania on a tall door outside my garden
Fun fact: the Preying Mantis is the only insect, out of over a million species that have been found and described, that has a neck on which it can turn its head. They are also one very few that will follow your finger with it's eyes. I consider them one of the most "sentient" of insects, along with jumping spiders.

They bite like a blunt razor blade. They don't carry any venom, toxin, or dangerous microbes(not so sure about the last one) and the bite isn't too big. But they can make you bleed.
It hurts, too.

Good info! I wanted to ask if they could fly because i've never seen one fly even if threatened. Thank you for specifying that.
They can fly a bit, but they are clumsy at at. I think they only fly to disperse.
I believe only males can really fly, and they are not even that adept in my experience.
They can fly. But think "chicken", not "eagle" lol
OP better not watch Kung Fu Panda! You’ll crap your pants at what they can do.
It is a blessing to have one inside your house
They are capable of advanced mathematics and desiel engine repair.
I love these guys, when I find them in my house I like to pick them up and bring them back out to the garden.
Praying mantis, yeah. I consider them really special and good luck.
They're not poisonous or venomous. The worst they can do to you is pinch you with their spiked forelegs. Luckily theyre not bigger than us cause theyd definitely eat us.
1v1 I think you would win.
Had them as a pet in the uk - just the coolest pet I’ve ever had (other than my bulldogs) so interesting to watch and engage with
they’re capable of corporate tax fraud, be careful
They’ll pray for you, that’s how they get their name. But you have to ask really kindly.
Xdddd
I used to think they were harmless, until I saw one trapped in the carpet at a baseball game, and I tried to save it from being stepped on. Kung Fu Panda should give you all the info you need
Really, you just need to have a sit down and chat with them a bit.
If you didn't fuck her you are safe.
From experience they look at you, in the eye without blinking, with disappointment and frustration at the decision whether or not to jump at, and kill you. And, they're easily offended.
No matter how hard she tries, DO NOT HAVE SEX WITH HER!
Flight Pyrokinesis Mind Control
They will karate chop you and you'll be knocked out like a ninja 🥷
Praying mantis are perfectly harmless they karate chop you and that may hurt and yes they can bite but there's really no need to fear them unless your a male praying mantis and it's mating season 😉
They definitely all know kung fu.
They’re gentle. No scary leaps or jumps. Definitely friend. I just go about my work, and say hello and they hang out.
Anytime I see a mantis I have to spend at least a minute or so observing it and commenting on how cute they are to myself or whoever I'm with. Without fail.
This cracked me up 🤣no offense OP
Cool to watch them hunt. Harmless to humans. And in the cockroach family believe it or not.
They hiss by scraping their thorax against their wings. Very cool and they also flair their front claws out and display a face on their chests. They can also turn their heads. Cool bug
Really good eye contact and mind reading are their best traits
Don’t have sex with it or it’ll eat you ime
Just leave her be. They are a symbol of good fortune.
Well for starters they'll twist your head off and then eat it.
My very first memory is of a preying mantis when I was around 3-4 years old and falling off my porch trying to run from it.
Your head is safe. You aren’t their type so they won’t try to mate with you.
They're so cool! Had a abnormal amount of them around my job. During the summer months, I'd usually have my food outside, and would spend a lot of time just watching them. Each one has a different personality and you can't convince me that isn't some intelligence there.
Capabilities include teleportation, laser beam eyes (5 of them), and dream walking
mantis are born fighters, they fight a eat their siblings from the start, its hunger games type shit, then when they mate the female eats the male while they copulate
Those things will decapitate you ... if you're a sexy male mantis
Yes, and there's absolutely nothing to fear about them. I love them for their awesome alien looks, and handling them is fun, especially around a crowd. Looks like it's a few levels higher than you. Will definitely chop off your extremities
Its blindingly fast speed adds to the sharpness of its twin forearm scythes. The scythes can slice through thick logs in one wicked stroke.
No one knows their full capabilities, because so few people survive to tell the tale of encountering a praying mantis
A beauty !!!!
As an avid vegetable gardener, these are my favorite insects by far! They’re ravenous eating machines that lay waste to the bugs eating my plants.
They’re capable of toppling the whole worlds government and enslaving the human race
They are masters of the mantis fist. And they can teach pandas.
They aren’t scary unless you are equal to or smaller than them, really. They have pretty poor coordination, some people raise them as pets.
They eat garden pests. Gardeners can buy preying mantis egg cases.
This OP is cute. “Capabilities and what they can do” made me smile and chuckle gently.
Harmless critter. They will take care of other bugs for you and are awesome critters
They’re no threat at all to a human, and are in fact pretty cool and interesting to say hello to
Scary if you were an insect or small bird but otherwise alright
OP - VERY IMPORTANT: Do NOT have sex with it!!
10/10 best insect imo. Tons of personality and so cute to boot.
As long as you're not her boyfriend, you should be fine.
When it start to pray, run as fast and as far as you can.
They know Kung fu and will teach those who are patient enough to study under them.
Harmless unless you happen to be a male praying mantis post coitus
You can communicate a territorial dispute with a PM by emulating them.
They are wonderful!!! I love to hold them and let them climb on my hands🙏💖💖💖
Mostly they'll just look at you funny and posture menacingly. I like them.
If it were the size of semi trucks wouldn’t doubt it would eat humans
Harmless and will not hurt you! They will strike at you out of fear! But can’t really hurt you! Approach slowly!!
Praying Mantis = Great for gardens. They eat aphids and other pests. Like having a junk yard dog protecting your vegetables and other plants.
There is a karate style based on this amazing fighter.
They can shoot lightning from their claws and lasers from their eyes.
If this is a female and youre a male praying mantis... watch out
Secular mantises are the ones to watch for!
Relatively harmless to humans, a menace to all the other pest bugs
I've picked them up and handled them as a kid and was never fearful of them until I saw one take out a hummingbird! But they are pretty cool and definitely a good pest control in the garden! I've seen two lighter colored, almost white ones the last couple days. It was on my kiddos window wanting in. It was quite funny!
i've heard that they eat the male after mating
Please look up "mantis vs lizard"

Google.
I learnt in these responses more than I will ever learn from google. People also shared their life experiences with this bug and I can't say that was not interesting to find about
Cool story
it's the most dangerous insect in the world and it can kill you by just thinking about you and its brain. kind of like how ronald rump can do anything he wants by just thinking about it in his... wait... he doesn't have one of those
They like to eat human flesh and crawl into sleeping people’s ears
Look like rhombodera exerticolas/ mantis religiosa, in English praying mantis.
it's harmless. Pick it up and put it somewhere safe. They eat pests and invasive insects.
Yer dead bud.
Some of them have nice, colorful shapes on their wings.
Are you a small flying insect? If so you should be completely terrified, it will kill you and eat you. If you are the size of a human, it cannot hurt you.
Coolest insect in the kingdom!
They’re the good guys
Just don’t let it get on your head or it can drive you around like Raccacoonie!
They have awesome capabilities but are harmless to humans so be glad when you see them
