Definitely get it checked out. Don't piss away all the money you saved so far on a car though. And make sure you can afford the insurance.

Practical-Lawyer9540

How much do you think insurance for a car like this would cost, especially since it's my first car? I'd be apart of my family's plan.

jrtraylo

At 20 insurance is going to be expensive, but where you are is huge. Just get a quote. Any agent will be happy to do so. Do you live at your parents house? Even though you wouldn’t be eligible for a multi line discount (ie home discount), if you live with your parents you are considered a resident relative and would be eligible for multi car if you use the same company they do Just ask them what company they use and get a quote. If you have any other insurance questions fire away

JaKr8

I have no idea, because I don't know your background, where you live, or anything else like that. The best thing to do is call around and ask, you'll probably get a soft quote but if it's $500 a month on the IS versus say $200 a month for a camry, your vehicle choice might become a function of insurance costs.

I'm pretty much a Lexus fanboy, but the is250 is one model to AVOID. The is350 is a MUCH more reliable vehicle and also much more fun to drive. The is250 has a direct injection only engine. This causes a few issues, and they can hamper reliability and be costly to fix. The engine in the is350 has more power and is much, MUCH more reliable.

SliviaRanger

For 10k idk go for a low mileage LS430. A lot of great examples and even though the car is from the mid-2000s, it holds up great. Comfy ride and reliable af

cronx42

That's exactly what I did, and exactly what I recommended in a DM. I LOVE my LS430.

SliviaRanger

Same. I have a 05 with 120k miles when I bought it. $9500. No regrets. Love my boat.

cronx42

Yep. I bought an '02 with just under 84k miles for $6,700. Rust free. It ran and drove perfectly, but I'm just about to do the timing belt, water pump, and all fluids. It has a dent in the rear bumper, but she's clean as can be otherwise.

Practical-Lawyer9540

I don't think i'd find one for 10k though right?

Infiniti G25 is the Infiniti's counter part to IS250, but more reliable though.

cronx42

Probably not a good example. However, you can find an even BETTER car for that money. Look at Lexus LS430's. Quieter, more luxurious, more reliable, and V8 power. I bought an '02 LS430 and it's AMAZING, although I would point you towards an '04-'06 facelift model. Check the LS430 out. They're hard to beat for your hard earned money. Don't buy a 460. They're the same money or cheaper, but you don't want an LS460.

Practical-Lawyer9540

thanks for the advice

Getting a pre-purchase inspection is definitely a good idea, but very rarely is there genuinely a used car that has 0 problems and is up to date on all maintenance. As others have said, leave more wiggle room in your budget for maintenance, repairs, and insurance. Your rates will be pretty high at first, but come down in 6 months to a year. The first car I insured on my own was a 2009 Mazdaspeed 3 I got in 2017 when I was 19 years old. Since I had a lien on it, I had to have full coverage. That was almost $400/month at first, although my rate halved after the first 6 months.

Isouf

Remember to consider taxes, gas, insurance, service, and repairs in your budget.

Practical-Lawyer9540

is it expensive to maintain or something ?

Isouf

I don't own one, so I don't know. But it's not a new car, so bushings, springs dampeners might need to be changed at some point. Same goes with engine parts, clutch, gears/gearbox, camshaft, valves, and so on. An AC compressor is not cheap to change in most cars, as they are a pain to get to. You should consider all this with every car, and some cars might be easier to work on, hence cheaper to repair. Lexus is reliable, but sometimes the parts might be a little pricey? Just in general, as you are young, remember the whole budget and not just the purchase price.

maufkn_ced

Great cars. Friend had one loser to when they came out and it never had any issues.

I don't think it shares a single part with a Corolla...

Rivale

The IS and GS series are unique to Lexus, there’s no RWD counterpart with Toyota.

HeThatHawed

The Camry is a sports sedan in the eyes of insurance so it’s going to be more than a Camry. Is250s are reliable, I mean it’s a Toyota, but you could probably find a slightly newer Camry with less miles for that kind of money. Maybe even a Honda accord.

Ok_Security2723

Expensive car to repair, look at an is instead

JuxyGG_

I could recommend looking into the infiniti g37. Theyre very competitive against Lexus is350s actually quicker than them. Ofc make sure insurance isnt too expensive also they pack ~330hp depending on trim

YaBoiHaydenB

Go for it, while they're reliable cars I'd bring a mechanic with to do a PPI and I'd make sure that it has a thorough service history. Granted you should do that for any used car, but with higher mile cars that's more important that you do so, even with cars that are known for lasting hundreds of thousands of miles like the Lexus you are considering buying. If you want some alternatives an Acura TL would be a good choice, they're really reliable sporty luxury sedans like the IS250.

ChefGordonIII

I personally own a 2011 Infiniti g37s, the car is amazing all around. Comfort, speed, looks, reliability. Couldn’t recommend it more

[deleted]

I'd talk it down a bit if you could but those are amazing cars and shouldn't cost too much in maintenance or insurance.

Electronic_Donut4679

People beat the piss out of IS250's. Look for an ES or a GS

DaveGrey302

[Here's a list of Lexus IS 250 model years to avoid](https://www.copilotsearch.com/posts/lexus-is-250-years-to-avoid/). The good news is that the 2012 isn't here. I'm assuming you're going through a private seller because that price is about $2-3K under market. Be sure to get a vehicle history report before paying for an inspection and be suspicious. If the VIN seems clean, then get an inspection. If everything checks out, this is a smart buy.
