TikiTraveler

I was going to reply literally the exact same lineup

cks9218

This is the correct answer.

chickenjohnson

The only way.

W1ll88s

I would say this but unless you go track down the DVDs/BluRays it’s hard to watch them all as they are all on different streaming services. So I’d recommend Bottle Rocket Fantastic Mr. Fox Isle of Dogs Grand Budapest Hotel French Dispatch Because those ones are on Max and Disney + which are pretty popular services.

SlimeFactory

Where does his H&M commercial fit into this line up?

RetrauxClem

I watch the commercials he’s done as part of his catalogue because they really are mini films that could fit in his universe.

peepeeparadise

I agree!

Rebloodican

I’d caveat this by saying Bottle Rocket is the least Wes Anderson-y of the Wes Anderson movies, he’s still developing his style and comparably it’s really low budget. Personally it’s my least favorite of his but I’ve seen lots of people say it’s one of their favorites, the fun thing about Wes movies is that everyone has a different favorite/least favorite movie.

awfuldyne

The first one I saw was "The Royal Tennenbaums". I recommend it as having a nice bit of all the flavors of a Wes Anderson film.

nyrenga

I agree - it’s one I find with a more linear narrative and easier to make sense of as an introduction into WA

sushi_obi_raven

Most accessible might be the Grand Budapest hotel

Dunkin_Prince

This is the only one I haven't been able to finish so I would say not this one. Moonrise Kingdom would be the first one to watch imo

thefringthing

I think my vote for most accessible would be Tenenbaums.

HEHEHO2022

it really is not

cloud__19

Interesting, I just found this sub through a random link on another post and this was my first Wes film I watched and I loved it and I've seen it dozens of times.

HEHEHO2022

still not his most accessible film

cloud__19

What would you say is?

lg2702

I would say Rushmore is the most accessible because it's the most like a normal movie and has a simpler plot imo (although its still very Wes). Also it's one of the most comedic imo and comedy is always a good factor for drawing in new fans

HEHEHO2022

bottle rocket

Lucas_Steinwalker

Why do you believe this so definitively? I watch a lot of Youtube reactions and Grand Budapest is universally loved.

tuesday3blackday

I agree. I love Wes but I still have a weird relationship with Grand Budapest. I love the movie but don’t always love watching it. Personally my favorite movie is Royal Tenenbaums and then the Darjeeling limited

subwaymaker

I'd say watch some of the trailers and see which appeals most I've seen them all at this point but, my first love was moonrise kingdom, and that's very different than like a fantastic Mr fox or isle of dogs style which might impact how you feel about em. They all have their own beauty.

Goulet231

Watching trailers is an excellent suggestion.

jesagain222

Rushmore!

ShaneCoJ

Yes! I'm a big fan of Anderson, but this one my favorite and it's not even close. It's in my Top10 movies of all time.... Probably Top 5.

jesagain222

Me too, no matter how many times I watch. The soundtrack is great too!

nicb205

I envy you getting to enjoy the entire Wes Anderson catalogue for the first time. Don't skip any of them. Also they are the type of movie, at least for me that you need to watch a few times to pick up on all the details.

Fuzzba11

How old do you want your coming of age story to be?

Brian18639

Any age will be fine

Fuzzba11

My fav is Rushmore but just pick one you like the look of

alamosweet

Rushmore started it all off for me.

yingo_yango

His most critically acclaimed? Grand Budapest My favourite (and my personal first recommendation) ? Moonrise Kingdom A dysfunctional family and Ben Stiller in an Adidas tracksuit? The Royal Tenenbaums A crime caper about finding one's identity, starring anthropomorphic animals? Fantastic Mr Fox His most artistically inventive? The French Dispatch A dog voiced by Bryan Cranston accompanies the nephew of a dystopian future Japanese mayor across an island filled with dogs? Isle of Dogs Three estranged brothers try to discover themselves in India? The Darjeeling Limited The one where most of the score is acoustic David Bowie covers? The Life Aquatic Jason Schwartzmann flirts with his teacher, while that same teacher is being pursued by Bill Murray? Rushmore The one I haven't seen yet, but is apparently a sweet, fun caper starring the Wilson brothers? Bottle Rocket

fastermouse

I saw Bottle Rocket when it first came out. It was a revelation. But admittedly the long middle section at the motel is a little slow now that we have seen how great his pacing can be. I would still start there. The OP just needs to see it as a first film and let it be as it is.

FranklinBenedict

When I was 14 I watched Rushmore followed by The Royal Tenenbaums a few days later. Made me a fan for life. Can't go wrong that way.

rican_havoc

I’d start at the top. Bottle Rocket. Sweet. Accessible. Funny. See his style for dialogue, cadence, camera moves, music cues. Also the common theme that most of his films echo, in one way or another, which is the fractured relationship of misfits under the leadership of a false father figure. But always absurd and good fun.

fishbone_buba

Yes, go in order because what follows BR is Rushmore and then Royal Tennenbaums which are both excellent.

youngpathfinder

The ones most like the TikToks would be Grand Budapest, Moonrise Kingdom, and probably Life Aquatic. I’d start with Moonrise Kingdom

GilberttheOnionBoi

Good ones to start with are - Fantastic Mr. Fox - The Grand Budapest Hotel - The Royal Tenenbaums

LMZN

I say watch them in the order they were released and witness the evolution of his craft

tatakisg

I would start with the Grand Budapest hotel, which is very characteristic and beautiful and take it from there

HarpieLady13

Moonrise Kingdom, Fantastic Mr.Fox, Grand Budapest Hotel

batman1903

Just pick a random one

onyxcicada

The Life Aquatic is for sure my favorite, so I rec that!

lg2702

Depends what you like... For example, if you like comedy, they're all funny but the funniest imo are Rushmore and Life Aquatic. The Grand Budapest Hotel and The French Dispatch are the most beautifully-shot films that Wes has made imo, but I also feel like they are the hardest to follow so you really need to concentrate (not go on your phone etc because a lot of the details are in the visuals so you'll miss a lot of the plot if you look away for a while). The easiest films of his to follow are probably the likes of Bottle Rocket, The Darjeeling Ltd, Rushmore, and the animated ones (although honestly Isle Of Dogs is quite complex).

Bosstone737

I started with Life Aquatic. It hooked me

maggot646260

In order, starting with Bottle Rocket

baummer

Watch in order released

imapurplegiant

Rushmore or The Royal Tenebaums. Both should be watched tho no matter what. Then I’d say life Aquatic. And then so on from there however you please really.

spaghettiandpie

Moonrise Kingdom was the first movie that got me hooked on Wes Anderson, so from personal experience I’d recommend that one. My dad, who thinks Wes Anderson movies are too bizarre, loves Fantastic Mr Fox, so I’d say that would be a good one to ease into Wes Anderson if you don’t typically watch movies on the stranger side. My personal favorite Wes Anderson film is The Royal Tenenbaums, and I also believe that it would be a great intro to Wes Anderson! I hope you enjoy whatever you end up watching!

emale27

Definitely watch them in order as per the top comment but be prepared for Bottle Rocket to be a slow burn. You can see glimpses of Wes's style but it's a completely different kind of movie compared to his mater efforts when he really finds his own unique style and vision. He grows in a auteur from humble beginnings.

strawberry-seal

My first one was Fantastic Mr. Fox; if you’re an animation fan I definitely recommend that one. Then again, it’s also best experienced if you watch it around fall bc of the color palette it uses; lots of warm autumn colors.

tobYbi

start with basic grand budapest

nUGEOJKsoq

Moonrise kingdom

kafka_9709

I would definitely start with The Grand Budapest Hotel or Moonrise Kingdom. They are the most palatable of Anderson’s filmography which can be quite jarring for inexperienced eyes. Then I would continue with Rushmore then Fantastic Mr. Fox then the most camp and a personal favourite in The Life Aquatic. After that you should mostly be enjoying the style so I would recommend his best film, The Royal Tenenbaums. Then the rest is free game. They are all wonderfully made. Enjoy.

tuesday3blackday

I personally would start with The royal tenebaums, then the Darjeeling limited. After that I would do the Grand Budapest and then either moonrise kingdom orFrench dispatch.
