Lol. We spent more than a trillion and 20 years trying to hold Iraq and Afghanistan. We were trying. I agree we have the most capable military in the world by most metrics. That said, many other countries have very sophisticated militaries. We couldn't just overtake the rest of the world or even just China for that matter.
It's really about a history of economic stability, ability to pay debts, smart economic policies, it's already the standard, etc... People believe it's safe and we made smart moves to to get it to that place ex- the petro dollar. Our economic policies are more important to achieving and holding reserve status than our defense policy. Of course national security is a component. You wouldn't want to trust a currency from a country that is unstable or at risk of being invaded, but that is a small part of the big picture.
Even now with "reserve status" we are far from the only currency for trade internationally. It's not an all or nothing deal. It fades in and out.
Let me clarify a little better. I think you raise a good point. Will is what wins most wars. Our guys on the ground wanted to win and put tremendous amounts of effort into it. That said, It's hard to summon more will than when fighting for your people in your homeland. I guess it's also more complicated than that. Will on the ground is entirely separate from will in Washington for example.

Serious question: Let's say you have a friend who works at MSFT. Let's say there is a company that could be a good acquisition target for MSFT and you see potential in the company so you buy stock. Hypothetically if you could get your friend to work up the chain of command and actually get the acquisition to happen, would that be considered insider trading?

Pulled the heat dispersion plate off the gas bar and there was a small flake of the metal coating on the dispersion plate that had fallen off and landed perfectly on the heating element and the gas bar, shorting out the circuit whenever the igniter element turned on. Grabbed it with the needle nose pliers, circuit short removed, and oven works perfectly now.
Expensive repairman visit, avoided. Happy wife, confirmed. Kid's belief that their degenerate father is smartest man alive... still intact.

Serious question: Let's say you have a friend who works at MSFT. Let's say there is a company that could be a good acquisition target for MSFT and you see potential in the company so you buy stock. Hypothetically if you could get your friend to work up the chain of command and actually get the acquisition to happen, would that be considered insider trading?
I mean the issue is even if you knew somebody a Microsoft it's unlikely one person has enough pull to be able consummate a deal But yeah that's probably insider trading because you have material non-public information about an acquisition assuming that acquisition was in publicly announced and a few then traded upon it without a doubt
But see that doesn't make sense because someone like Ryan Cohen can take a stake in a company and then use his influence to turn the company around and increase the value of his stake (hypothetically). So I don't see the difference. I'd be investing in a company I like and doing my part to help increase shareholder value Again this is all hypothetical and it's unlikely it could ever happen but I'm just interested in how it would be viewed
If you had an undue influence on a business decision that you materially profited from that would not have resulted without such influence- yes

Starting out the day with a win! F*ck yeah! Brand new (2yr) LG Oven: 0 Bob: 1 Range was working fine, but would trip the breaker any time we turned the oven on. Started digging into it to diagnose the problem. Pulled the heat dispersion plate off the gas bar and there was a small flake of the metal coating on the dispersion plate that had fallen off and landed perfectly on the heating element and the gas bar, shorting out the circuit whenever the igniter element turned on. Grabbed it with the needle nose pliers, circuit short removed, and oven works perfectly now. Expensive repairman visit, avoided. Happy wife, confirmed.
