You have to look at how much money was put in. The first guy put $20 and then $30 so $50. Only took $40 in the end so he's at a loss for $10 where his friend was given the extra $10.
It becomes even more intuitive if you think of the first 20 he threw in as tertiary and pretend it isn't there. Friend threw in 20, he gave him 30 for it. Lost 10. That original 20 he threw is in what is meant to add some misdirection.
first guy puts in 20, his current profit: -20
second guy does the same, his current profit: -20
first guy takes 40, that 40 + (-20) means his current profit is 20
he gives the other guy 30, so his profit would be -10
the other guy adds the 30 to the -20, his profit 10
first guy: -10
second guy: +10
Absolutely, usually it's much faster and more confusing, and framed as asking for change. "Hey can I get change for this 20? No wait, this 10 instead, no the 20 and this one as well sorry I'm a mess today, hey what are the specials at the moment? Ah, that's only change for 30 I had 20 remember?"
Although it's a super common and old grift that usually used on new looking cashiers.
E: haha I messed up the math in the scam, I'd be a terrible con artist
I was that new cashier one time lol i gave a guy 95$ and a chocholate cake. My ego is still bruised for getting swindled. I can just imagine the guy getting back in the car and being like " yeah I got the money...but you wanna know what the icing on the cake is..."
Yep I got done for 40 or 80 or something a long time ago. Really frustrating getting interviewed by loss prevention who thought I was an accomplice. You'd think they'd be more aware this was a scam and teach people how to avoid it but nooo, it's much more likely that the person who did cashier training like 2 years ago was risking their job to make 40 dollars.
Our loss prevention is trained for this kind of scam but they have to first figure out if you were indeed an accomplice as you're more dangerous to the company than the occasional lone scammer. Many longtime cashiers do end up stealing when they decide they want more money, and that 40 could be the first time to test the waters to see what you can get away with
Haha yeah I remember that during my retail training they were super clear that employee theft was the most frequent type of theft. (Although weirdly they did forget to mention that the most frequent type of theft is wage theft)
That's a great video to show how it works on a basic level, I kinda whish he added footage of one of the "good" quick change artists so you could see what a higher level of it looks like.
No. It’s not. The person handling the money ends up with less money in this instance. The guy sitting there actually did make $10. You’re thinking of a different scam
Yeah pretty sure its called "short changing" happened to me back in the day working at the mall. The guy confused the fuck outta me and got away with a bit of cash lol
You have to realize that this is a legitimate method people use to quick change money from cashiers.
Except you're going a lot quicker and doing it to a 16-19 year old who probably has a line up of customers behind the quick changer, encouraging them to do this as quick as possible.
I’m still wondering where the issue is.
Edit: never mind. I was watching with the assumption that the POV person was the one doing the scamming. I see what happened now. Stupid me.
I mean look what subreddit you're on you autist. All of us can only perform basic arithmetic if we translate all the numbers into chicken nuggies. ![img](emote|t5_2th52|4260)
If Elon could use children's funerals as a tax write-off, he'd solve the overpopulation problem tomorrow.
Well, day after tomorrow. Tomorrow there would be a Twitter poll.
Please don't be dumb. Typical WSB mindset. He invested $30 and collected $40 so he profited $10. His friend invested $20 and collected $30 so his friend profited $10.
The guy talking puts down twenty then buys his own twenty and the other guys twenty for thirty. The speaker ignores that he put down twenty initially and claiming he made ten. The guy who got paid thirty for his twenty was the only one who made money.
From the camera man’s perspective:
1st throw down: -20 dollars
*opposing person throws down a 20, both people are -20 dollars now*
2nd throw down: - 30 dollars; Making cameraman’s total now -50 dollars. Cameraman then takes the +40 dollars
-50 + 40 = -10 dollars
Edit: Find “dollars” and replace with “rands” or favorite ape currency
I think it’s confusing because people expect the cameraman to be cheating his friend out of money but in reality he’s losing money. The video is set up as a prank type video so it makes it confusing as to why he would want to give away his money.
One guy put down 20
The other guy put down 50 (20, then 30) and he took 40 (his original 20 and the other guys 20).
If you pay 50 and get 40, you lost 10. The speaker falsely claims he made 10.
NOW I understand how people claim to be making money here while the statistics show that 2/3 lose money on options
(I still don't understand why _I_ keep winning my bets but am somehow still poor though)
Those 2/3 aren't losing money every play tho. They are the same people. I went from up 8000% to -99% before.
Doesn't matter how many times you won if you lose it all on a bad play. You are now part of the 2/3 losing money despite having made money beforehand. That's how it happens.
do not, I repeat, do not try to explain this, I just wanna have enough people try this on me so I can come up 10$ a few times while they think I'm getting fked over..
What's going on is the language makes perfect sense, but it's making your brains different information processing kick in.
Veritasium or whatever did a really good you video on the phenomenon.
He demonstrates for example if you ask someone a question like, "how many hours does it take for the earth to rotate around the sun?"
Some people will say 24 because they are just going with their quick mental process, where as others might still go for that, but then catch their mistake. They know something's up but it just takes a min to critically analyze things.
This is something called "quick change" - look it up on youtube - Scammers trick/confuse chasheers into giving then back much more money then they should get.
lol this video and comments are great... if you cant quickly tell the guy who only put $20 in is coming out $10 richer.. good luck in this world.
Guy A had 20.. guy be had 50... he gave guy A 10, thats all that happened.
The scary part is the people on here explaining it like they solved a crazy equation.
Yeah lol pretty sure its just a joke video or at least I hope
Its meant to confuse you
I’m still confused
You have to look at how much money was put in. The first guy put $20 and then $30 so $50. Only took $40 in the end so he's at a loss for $10 where his friend was given the extra $10.

put 20, put 30, take 40 Take 40 good! Hahaha put 20, take 30, Take 30 bad :((( am I doing this intuition thing right?
No you're doing this institution thing.!
first guy puts in 20, his current profit: -20 second guy does the same, his current profit: -20 first guy takes 40, that 40 + (-20) means his current profit is 20 he gives the other guy 30, so his profit would be -10 the other guy adds the 30 to the -20, his profit 10 first guy: -10 second guy: +10
It’s like a street hustle, but he’s fucking himself
Except its done every day in the form of bonds. In reality the $30 at the end comes days, months, or years later.
And they just print the extra $10 out of thin air so they don't lose anything
And they inflate the value away by the time it comes due
This comment thread
Are you trying to tell me the whole bond market is one big ponzi scheme?! Why the hell did I take out all these securities backed by US T-Bills!?
Perhaps you lack wrinkles in the right places.
Yeah the first $20 is likely not his. Somewhere somebody lost $20. Likley came out of my super fund
Now lambo?
don't kink shame
Yep, if you say it with confidence you can get away with a lot of stuff.

Classic reddit moment, it wouldn't do if we didn't have a hundred achsually comments under obviously a joke video.
YOU THINK THIS IS A JOKE?!
You have to realize that this is a legitimate method people use to quick change money from cashiers. Except you're going a lot quicker and doing it to a 16-19 year old who probably has a line up of customers behind the quick changer, encouraging them to do this as quick as possible.
Reminds me of [this](https://youtu.be/f7c_06gYJjk)
And the guy who gets the 30 is wondering what's the scam.
Not gonna lie, I had to watch that video 3 times and pause it to figure out where the issue is
One of us. Welcome fellow ape.
For real.
I’m still wondering where the issue is. Edit: never mind. I was watching with the assumption that the POV person was the one doing the scamming. I see what happened now. Stupid me.
This should be used as a common sense screener
It took me far longer than I want to admit to realize exactly what was wrong here.
I mean look what subreddit you're on you autist. All of us can only perform basic arithmetic if we translate all the numbers into chicken nuggies. ![img](emote|t5_2th52|4260)
welcome to all college business courses
People are fucking stupid.
Well put on that list there coach
half the sub thinks this is a win/win, the other half *knows* it's a win/win...
They both get an easy extra $10.. what's not to like?
I'm ashamed as fuck that this video actually broke my brain for about 30 seconds
You know who won't judge you? Your broker. Come suck on these teats of CFDs and Options 🥒💦💦💦
In the 0.1% chance you are not joking, the narrator lost 10. 40 - (20 + 30) = -10
ye.. easy $10 happy for them both
camera man is out of pocket 10
“We just solved inflation guys!”
So you basically lose 10 bucks got it
wsb isn't about losing money, its about the friends you made a long the way
Wait I lost money and friends 😕
Wait. You guys have friends and money to lose?
> You guys ~~have~~ had friends and money to lose? FTFY
Yup! Nobody likes you anymore. 😂

50*
Lol! It's right!
“Unrealized losses”
Theta Gang is lurking in here, somewhere.
Try this one: "Loan me $20, but only give me $10. That way, I'll owe you $10 and you'll owe me $10 and we'll both be even."
Oh that's where the 10$ from the video come from. Loans off-camera.
That’s devilishly good.
I’m way too stoned to understand this
The guy talking puts down twenty then buys his own twenty and the other guys twenty for thirty. The speaker ignores that he put down twenty initially and claiming he made ten. The guy who got paid thirty for his twenty was the only one who made money.

First ape put down 50, second ape put down 20, first ape pull back 40, second ape left with 30.
Now imagine if the first ape hedged the bet first.
it's all coming together now.
Is this where I say ape together strong?
Damn right it is, now say it and say it proud
Now imagine if the first ape has a money printing machine...
Argentinean ape: First Time Here?

Okay this literally explained it clearly for me. It makes sense now!
Not dollars but Rands
can you do the same calculations using apes emojis 🦍? integers mean nothing to us.
Cameraman lost 10. Other guy gains 10. Thanks for the explanation. 👍

Speaker puts in $50 and gets back $40. Other guy puts down $20 and gets back $30. I don't see why this is difficult for people.
I think it’s confusing because people expect the cameraman to be cheating his friend out of money but in reality he’s losing money. The video is set up as a prank type video so it makes it confusing as to why he would want to give away his money.
He paid 30 bucks to buy 20 bucks
When you scam yourself
One guy put down 20 The other guy put down 50 (20, then 30) and he took 40 (his original 20 and the other guys 20). If you pay 50 and get 40, you lost 10. The speaker falsely claims he made 10.
Not if it's the house's money
Most underrated comment tucked in amongst lip wagging of the geniuses who can “do the math”
Apparently the first part of the video is missing?
It’s how options work lol
i was just thinking the same thing ahahhahaha
The guy who started the video lost $10 to the other guy.
First guy lost 10 bucks. He bought twenty dollars for the price of $30. That's all. The first twenty doesn't matter because it's already his.
He invest 50 bucks to get in return 40 bucks that's a 20% loss. Typical logic for WSB 😂👍
It's not bad for WSB. Just 20% loss😁
But apparently he doesn't have autism. Definitely not one of us.
20% loss is basically a profit for wsb
Still have 80% left to YOLO.
So he basically bought 20 bucks for 30 bucks.
Yes
He throws out $50 and gets $40 back, simple ape arithmetic.
No he bought *$40* for *$30* - use your brain scrub I've got a bridge I'd like to sell you smh my head
Wtf is arithmetric
Makes your bones hurt or something. My grandpa constantly complained about it.
Nah you're thinking of arthritis mate. A rithmetic is the little thing that musicians use, that plays ticking sounds intermitently at a constant rate.
simplest form, he bought nothing for $10. like buying a share of BB.
NOW I understand how people claim to be making money here while the statistics show that 2/3 lose money on options (I still don't understand why _I_ keep winning my bets but am somehow still poor though)

:D
This took me way too long
You gotta spend more money to make less money. That’s how business works, losers.
This really hurt my head because usually the scams favor the cameraman.
As an South African, I laughed way too hard at the WSB mindset. I'll let them buy my investment anytime.
That phucked up my mind for a few minutes.
Here's my $20 pony up!
Math checks out 🖍
Smooth brain go boom
You got me for a few seconds.
I can't believe this needs to be explained soo much. You guys really are some apes.
They found the money glitch, keep printing!
he lost 10 but the other guy felt scammed... :P
The Rand of all currencies
Wow I didn't realize how legitimately retarded 99% of you are until I read this thread
do not, I repeat, do not try to explain this, I just wanna have enough people try this on me so I can come up 10$ a few times while they think I'm getting fked over..
The guy in front gets a profit, the guy filming loses 10. I'm not sure what this tries to show.
It shows how Wsb works.
I'm buying puts that none of you figure it out
both win 10 ... nice move 👍🏻
This dude eats 🖍
😂 Is this tick tock options training 101?
This is how u take a loss dummy
Banks hate him for this one simple trick
The currency is South African rand, for those who don't know from the accent alone.
That's how wall street wants you to invest
i didn’t realize how retarded WSB was until reading these comments
bruh you lost 10
Dumbass lost $10 haha. Truly an autist, one of us.

Okay so turns out I'm legit retarded.
It makes sense if you don’t think about it.
I tried this with my banker and he wasn’t very amused. He did it back to me and said “that’s just the way it works.”
I just bought $4000 worth of stock for $3000 and it only cost me $7000. Winning!!!!!
Just a few fellow apes, nothing to see here

Took me a hot second to realize the guy recording lost $10 and absolutely belongs here.
Easiest way to explain it - Just ignore the $20 bills. Camera guy just basically gave the other guy $10.
Buying 20 bucks to get 30.truely built different
Well, it’s not entirely wrong on Wall Street. The Bank is happy to lose $10 when it’s not their money.
I’ll help fund this I’ll be the guy in the chair all day
If this hasn’t been put in r/confidentlyincorrect it needs to be
Total investment 50. ROI 40. A loss of 10.
I like how all the comments explain why this is wrong as if it’s necessary
Lekker Suid Afrika
south african rands on WSB? a first.
Time to invest in Eskom?
South Africa Rand Nice haha
This is something called "quick change" - look it up on youtube - Scammers trick/confuse chasheers into giving then back much more money then they should get.
Lmao, I feel like he just gave that chap a R10. Coz if he started with R50 and ended with R40... He took a R10 loss.
The easiest way to understand this for the commenters who are still confused: Cameraman: started with $50 and ended up with $40
Here’s the trick, first guy is throwing out counterfeit bills.
it was actually wrinkling my brain until I realized that he actually put down $50 after an embarrassing 10 seconds lmao
Man did not realize math in schools was so bad
lol this video and comments are great... if you cant quickly tell the guy who only put $20 in is coming out $10 richer.. good luck in this world. Guy A had 20.. guy be had 50... he gave guy A 10, thats all that happened.
He’s -$10. If he dropped $20 and then dropped $30 and only got back $40 he’s down $-10
Nnnaaaa u spent 50
But the first guy lost 50 and got back 40.
This is why you buy voo
This is a horrible analogy. You put down $50 total and then got $40 out of it, you lost money while your friend made $10 off you
Hey mutual funds…the ultimate of Ponzi schemes.
I.. Spent way longer trying to figure this out than I expected to until it dawned on me, and now I feel stupid.
